Help me help you get better.

This is an ask me anything topic without the veneer of sarcasm like the other guy’s thread. I will open up my entire breadth of knowledge to anyone who asks with no snark or condescension. Even to those that do not like me.

From guard breaks to dealing with head movement, if you ask I will give you in depth answers with proper English and grammar. This isn’t a topic to complain about the game, it’s about getting better.

How do you deal with someone who is extremely good at breaking the block?
what are your favorite combos for breaking the block?
How did you improve your clinch denials?
If you lose a certain number of matches in a row do you get off and try again another time?

        1. I will always keep my block up during the first rock. This allows me to gauge my opponent’s patterns and determine if he knows how to block break. If he doesn’t, I hold block and wait. If he does: if the combo starts with a 12 and then I get hit with another straight punch, I immediately duck and hold it there for a good second. If the guy is throwing different angles strikes, I pick a lean direction and pray. If you make him miss even one strike you can go back to blocking with impunity. That’s the number one mistake I see with swaying during block breaks. They do it for the duration of the rock and end up getting KOed. Just slip one punch and hold on block.

        2. If the opponent isn’t rocked: 1123, 1212 headkick

If he is rocked: Here is the ancient block breaking technique passed down by our forefathers - 16 134 No one sees the block break coming because it doesn’t start with a 12 and it doesn’t end with a big strike like an overhand or headkick, limiting your chance of getting countered and KOed. If you’ve rocked and block broken your opponent at least once, this block breaker is almost always going to drop them. During the first rock sequence of the fight I will add a punch onto the combo - 16 1234. Eventually if they haven’t been KOed yet, you can do a simple 1234 combo and they are likely to be knocked out on the way down, bypassing the whole FTF sequence.

        3. Never did. Honestly, if I’m fighting someone that I know if going to clinch me, I hover around the right stick with my right thumb. You sacrifice some striking ability but you’re better off overall. Also, I throw a lower output of strikes and stick to two punch combos while forcing distance with jabs and movement.

        4. Sounds condescending but I generally don’t lose that often, at least not enough to build a streak, but I would imagine going to quick match instead of ranked might be a little less frustrating for you.

2 part question... I cant seem to deal with the in your face pressure fighters specifically the woodley, lawler, romero, gatchjie guys... i try to work the body but they just hold block and throw a double uppercut that rocls me if i im going to the body... i cant break the block because after a 1-2 then they sway uppercut or hook...

Secondly the elite grapplers that hold you in side control... i fake transitions i am patient... it doesnt seem to matter... cormier and gsp in side control is just impossible to escape... i know the obvious answer is to stay on the feet but eventually a great grappler will get you down...

Thanks man, I really needed help with block breaking. I would rock a guy 5-6 times and then he would rock me once and get a knockdown cause he knew how to break block.
It's weird cause I literally never ever lose in quick match even if i play for like 2 hours but if i do ranked if i lose a single match I go on a losing streak.

                1. You have to be patient. There’s no reason to not hold block and back lean/lunge for the whole first round. With these guys you have to focus on keeping distance and making them drain their own stamina. Make absolutely sure that they’ve finished their whole combo before letting go of block. When you’re ready to counter you have two options: you can throw single shot lead hooks and lead uppercuts while standing still OR you can plant your feet and throw three hooks in a row. The first option is slower and is meant for guys who throw combos and then back up to reset. The second is for those guys who just never let you have any space and it will flatline them no matter which direction they sway, even ducking. While using either strategy you MUST fire your shot before they start their combo/sway or you will get clobbered. If you miss or get hit during a strike, immediately block to cancel your other strikes and back up.

                2. In side control you have to wait until you see them start to throw any strike and then immediately transition. The sprawl transition is my favorite because it will allow you to stand up next. You can also use the new up transition to half guard as it is much faster than the other two. And if you have the L1 modifier transition to full guard that fighters like Tony Ferguson or Aldo have, it’s near impossible to stop. Don’t be afraid to be patient in side control either. If you’re low on stamina it’s better to eat 5 elbows than waste yourself by spamming transitions. You have more head health than you think.

Lots of times I can't do counter transitions or whatever. Only thing I don't have a grip on.

I try counter transitions when HUD pops up online showing transition is available, but the circle NEVER starts filling. Like it never accepts my input.

I’m having a hard time conceptualizing what you mean here. Are you talking about transition reversals? Or things like takedown reversals?

Sometimes when opponent starts transition a transition pops up on my HUD, similar to how the counter kneebar works. I can take a very short video if it would help.

Well counters are always initiated with a flick. I don’t think holding it would affect anything but there are issues with the right stick on PS4 so that might be part of the problem.

Also you have to hit the reversal before you even see the prompt most of the time. There are also some positions that have those prompts where the transitions don’t even work like the transition prompt to go to side control when you’re getting swept from postured half guard.

I don't think can flick it, the meter has to fill. That's one of the issues I had with counter kneebar, you need like a ton of GA for it.

Also the reference I'm making isn't the kneebar reversal, it's the counter from stacked or feet on hips, I don't remember off the top of my head.

You were, but you stepped on your own dick. I can see four different things that prevented you from claiming an easy win off that cheeser.

                              1. You generally had good timing, but you need to make sure you get your punch off first before they start swaying and firing. You got hit and rocked a couple times because you threw your hook just a fraction of a second too late.

                              2. You didn't let your head health recover all the way. You'd get tagged and then immediately go back to your strategy. With sway combo guys it's a dangerous game so you must make sure you're at full health before heading back into the fray.

                              3. Your block breaking is horrendous. You threw four 12s in a row at that guy's block. He would've been fried after the first 121 if you would've just thrown a big strike. Which leads into my next point. . .

                              4. You threw a big strike with next to no stamina and it got you flatlined. Not only did you wait too long and throw too many punches on the guard before you threw the big overhand right, you did it when you were fully drained and he was back from being rocked. You can't do that ever. Not even when they are rocked.

For the block breaker you should do the classic 1212 head kick at the very least. It leaves you open for a counter at the end, but that guy sucked enough that he wouldn't have gotten you with it. You can look at my first reply in this thread for my favorite block breakers though.
