Re: UFC 2009 Undisputed Demo Impressions
Finally played the demo and I am impressed. To be clear, I am not, nor have I ever been, a fan of fighting games. In fact, I think the only one I ever owned was the original Mortal Kombat for Genesis. But something about this game has me contemplating buying it later this month.
I like the control scheme, as it's easy enough that a non-fighter like myself doesn't feel lost, but certainly appears to have depth as well. I finally finished the tutorials and I look forward to putting whips, throws, and shoots to use -- I didn't even know how to do them for my first 5 or so fights.
Which brings me to the one point I want to make and a reason I'm excited about the game. I was able to win all my fights with Lidell (default/beginner diff) by simply striking and a counter takedowns/mounting. Not a huge accomplishment by any means, but after losing two in a row with Rua, it dawned on me that fighter styles & the strategic aspect of the game appears to mean something. Since I hadn't learned how to do much other than strike, I tried to go toe-to-toe with Lidell which obviously is not a good idea... where did I leave my mouthguard?
Anyways, this bodes well for my enjoyment of the game, as the further it is from button-mashing, the more interested I am. My friend & I used to play the old PS UFC game and despite him being a big fan (and actually a martial-artist himself), I hung in there and we had some great battles filled with counter-attacking, strategic fighting. I can see the potential for that in this game I think, although I'll probably still wait a bit to hear what the more discerning minds here think about it after release...
EDIT: Well, after reading the first few pages of the strategy thread, I realize that I'm not done with the tutorial yet -- I didn't do the transition part, which seems like the one thing that shouldn't be skipped. I have no doubt that I'm going to suck at this game if I don't improve my technical knowledge...Last edited by Qb; 05-04-2009, 10:20 AM.Comment

I thought I read somewhere that THQ has the UFC license for something like four years. Not sure the UFC could find another publisher at this point even if they wanted to.Comment

Re: UFC 2009 Undisputed Demo Impressions
Anyone else get a KO by countering a takedown attempt with something other than a knee?
I've landed spinning back kicks (square to the face) and different types of punches to counter takedown attempts but only got a KO with the knee.Comment

I have seen some crazy stuff. I have seen them get their legs tangled once and could not pull apart, was quite funny though.Comment

Re: UFC 2009 Undisputed Demo Impressions
got a stoppage due to body blows last night for the first time... I just made a point to punish Chuck's left side with body kicks, punches, and knees. I got the fight to the ground in the 3rd (after trying to stand through 2) and they called it after two big high knees to the other side -- rocked him with the first and then the 2nd caused the ref to step in.
I hope there is more potential for cut stoppages in the final, because I've had some downright nasty cuts but the fight always finished. Got Chuck bad with a horizontal elbow and he had a 4-5" long cut all the way across his forehead -- it was bleeding a lot (more than the normal cuts it seemed), but it would've been a stoppage IRL because he also had a major "goat's vajayjay" on his left eye that would've been running into his vision.
CPU Rua's submissions on Expert are awesome -- I love it when he makes me pay for being overly aggressive and doing stupid stuff like going for the underhook slam too often, etc. -- he got me BAD with a guillotine in the first round last night because I tried for that several times in a row.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

The first time I was getting the underhooks and he dropped on his back with my head locked in, I was just like "what the ****?", then he sunk it in and I tapped... From that point on I've been pretty careful with that position.
It's kind of fun to get caught in such a sudden submission.Comment

Re: UFC 2009 Undisputed Demo Impressions
This game is OFF THE CHAIN!
I'm not a huge fighting game fan or UFC/MMA whatever fan either. I've watched a total of 1 1/2 UFC fights in my whole life and both of those were just within the last few weeks.
The second I played this game I could tell if had polish. You just know a good game when you see/play it and this is definitely it. Me and my buddy had a ball playing about 20 or so head-to-head matches without knowing any controls.
And then I looked at the tutorial....HOLY S#!^ is this game DEEP! Its going to take me hours upon hours to figure this game out. Especially since I'm a complete UFC noob. I dont know what the diff transitions and moves are, what different fighters strengths are, etc.
Even still, this game went from being completely off the radar to an absolute day one purchase. The demo IS THAT GOOD.Comment

Re: UFC 2009 Undisputed Demo Impressions
I know a game's good when I can't stop playing it... I haven't touched NBA 2K9 or any of my other games more than once since this demo came out (I ran 2K9 Team-Up about a week ago). I normally just turn it on and play with the same guy for 25 fights or more and then switch to the other fighter for the following night. I'm probably well over 250 fights by now... I'll have carpal tunnel syndrome before the game even comes out ha.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: UFC 2009 Undisputed Demo Impressions
Any info on whether we'll be able to slam our way out of triangle attempts with certain fighters? (ie Rampage on Arona)Comment

Heh, unrelated, but the mention of triangles made me post this video that I just saw this morning... craziness:
