      Re: The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights

There's some decent looking ones here in Canada but they'd pretty much have to have GSP as a coach and they just did the US vs. UK thing so a US vs. Canada thing would be too soon.

Here's Madsen's comment on the fight/cut/lack of stoppage...

"Were you surprised the fight wasn't stopped in the first round with the amount of blood that was pouring out of Abe Wagner? What was going through your head seeing all that red and did referee Steve Mazzagatti say anything about stopping the fight?
      -- Paul in Phili

Jon Madsen : I actually was a little surprised. I thought damn, you're gonna have to kill somebody to get them to stop the fight. There was nothing I could do though, but keep on fighting.

As far as the amount of blood, I was definitely feeling it. I had blood in my eyes, in my mouth –- I had it all over. It was kind of gross. I could taste copper. You could definitely smell it. It was getting slippery and I knew it wasn't pleasant, especially with all the red. I was just thinking to put him away. He's cut, he's dazed, try to finish the fight.

Steve Mazzagatti never said a thing to me about stopping the fight and I never hard him say anything about that."

and some antics from Wes Sims...

"Is Wes Sims crazy? Tonight on TUF he said that he was the only man to beat Frank Mir twice. I thought something was weird so I checked his record on your site and sure enough, it said that he had actually lost twice to Mir. I went back and watched the fights again, and the fights results are as reported on your site, that he has actually lost to Mir twice. Now I'm just trying to figure out if he doesn't remember the fights, or if he has just decided to lie to America on national TV. Can someone please clear this up, especially for the others out there just as confused as myself? -- Cesar

Wes Sims: Obviously, a big fan that has to go back and watch those fights is a newbie to the sport. He's one of those TUF fans, because everybody that watched UFC 43 knows that I won that fight. I took a poll from Vegas all the way back to Ohio, every biker bar on the way home I stopped at and they all said the same thing: The last man standing –- that's your winner.

The second time? That's very questionable. At worst, I'd say no contest. It was so controversial; they fired "Big" John McCarthy over it. That's true. He's no longer there, is he? Wes Sims is not a liar.

Editor's Note: Take note of another Sims' quote from the first episode: "I never let the truth get in the way of a good story.""

You honestly are trying to tell me there isn't a fighter out there with as good stand up as this Abe guy who can also do SOME wrestling on the ground and actually compete with some stumpy overweight, mediocre fighter?

Abe was COMPLETELY one dimensional with no ground game, and at this point you'd think they'd take guys who a more rounded game who might actually be able to compete.

You cant name one fighter that should have been in it but you KNOW there are better fighters out there? Nobody is asking you to be a scout but have something more to back up your statement then some imaginary fighters in your head. I'm sure there are better fighters than Abe around but as I said earlier they either are contracted to other companies, in the UFC or dont want get into the UFC through TUF.

As for being one dimensional and that being a reason he shouldnt be in TUF...we had a one dimensional fighter who HEADLINED the Fight Night Live before the season premiere. Guilliard is as one dimensional as it gets (great standup though) and he's a former TUF participant. Plus thats one out of 16 fighters.

Yes. Because it's obvious there are; MMA is a hugely growing sport these days, and to think a guy like Abe was the best they could find is ridiculous.

LOL. I think I've watched every episode of TUF and there is always one guy who gets out classed. Abe was this years guy. Also your initial comment was about the entire cast....not just Abe.

I just find it funny that you think Dana and Joe Silva were like "I'm sure there are some great HW out there but we are to lazy too look. Lets just get this guy with no takedown defense and ground game...Abe, welcome to the Ultimate Fighter."

I think you're using way too much hindsight.

Guys on TUF usually aren't seasoned veterans. They have maybe a half-dozen fights for some small-time promotions, meaning there's very little video available of their fights. All they really have to go on is a bio and tryouts.

And I don't think Abe was a terrible choice. The guy had a 6-2 record, and had some skill standing and with jiu-jitsu. Sure, he had a big hole in his wrestling, but guys on TUF aren't complete fighters. If they were, they wouldn't be on TUF.

Abe just had the bad luck of his coach putting him up against a very strong wrestler when Abe's biggest weakness was wrestling.

TUF is, and always has been, a way for up-and-comers to try and show they belong in the UFC. It is not for guys who already belong in the UFC.

Honestly, I think the problem is more with your expectations than UFC talent evaluators.
