Re: UFC 117 - Anderson Silva v. Chael Sonnen

Great night of fights, so what happens next for Anderson? Rematch with Sonnen right away if highly unlikely since it wasnt some razor thin decision. I cant see them giving Okami the fight right away just because he beat Munoz. Do they give the fight back to Belfort or have Belfort fight Okami for the #1 spot with Sonnen fighting the loser of that fight?

I agree. Silva showed tons of strength and resilience in the fight. He showed that he deserves to be the champion by sticking it out and pulling off a beautiful submission when he HAD to finish the fight.

But to call him the p4p best in my opinion after that showing is wrong. I've always thought GSP was the p4p best and after tonights fight my belief is stronger than ever. Again I'll just say that if he was the p4p best. He wouldn't have been dominated for 4 and a half rounds in the first place.

Good fight by a tough fighter to show more heart than he has ever showed in his career, I look forward to the rematch or showdown with Vitor Belfort. Whichever may come.

        Great card.

Silva !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BJJ Black Belt !

I always had a feeling if Sonnen was going to lose, it would be by submission, because pretty much all his loses but one came by submission.

Was Silva ribs really hurt ?????? Who knows..... But his arse was put to the test tonight, for the 1st time in his career. Which is good thing for him ya know. Because when you become dominant for so many years, you kind of take things lightly and just coast off your talent.

Same thing happened to BJ Penn, Matt Hughes, etc. I say hmmmm, let Okami get his chance, then let him fight Sonnen again.
I think Okami should wait. I know he's winning but to me he's more of a placeholder and I don't think that fight would be much different than the Maia fight.

There needs to be Silva/Sonnen II without question. First off, that was a classic, classic fight (and card too). Second, Sonnen nearly beat the P4P best (or second best) so IMO he deserves a shot, even though I really don't want to hear more of his annoying trash talk. I think it's the accent that really puts it over the top, lol.

Either way, that was a sick, sick fight. The whole card was great. Aside from the Fitch Grind(tm), I was entertained for all of the fights I saw. I came in on the Roy Nelson fight, but heard there was action before that as well.
The Nelson fight was actually the first of the night on the PPV so you didnt miss anything.

Depending on Silva's ribs, Belfort probably gets a shot by years end.

Those fans were strange. First they were all chanting Silva's name, then they turned on him at the end of the fight and booed him.

If anyone knows where I can watch the post-fight press conferences that would be great. I'd love to hear what Dana thought of this fight.

                      Man this card was great.

They're giving the next shot to Belfort.

Tough for me to see Vitor winning.. it's gonna be a dance-off / snoozer for the most part since neither man will engage.

Chael not only had the balls to engage Anderson, but he also had the ability to take him down repeatedly. It takes guts to want to engage Anderson because even in the limited stand up, Chael was hurt.

Silva probably fights Belfort next for the title. I think Dana said he would get the next shot recently, although I think Belfort needs to fight once more before that.

I think its pretty clear that GSP is #1 P4P now though. You could even argue that Aldo could be 2.

to me it sounded like they booed him when he said that he had hurt ribs and shouldnt have been fighting. Some might have thought he was trying to use it as an excuse to why he got dominated most of the fight.

I feel bad for these guys that can't speak english well because you have to imagine a lot gets lost in the translator. You dont get the word for word from the fighter, they give you the main point of what theyre saying. And if they try to speak english its so broken and they aren't that great so their answers are simple and often sound retarted. So its harder for them to get the crowd through words like the guys that speak english can.

Even the best athletes have to overcome adversity. You don't always win pretty but you win. Silva is still the p4p best because he was able to overcome losing a fight and find some way to win. Thats why the fight is 5- 5 minute rounds. Not 4 & 1/2 rounds, Silva proved that. You can't say Fedor is p4p best when he just lost and hasn't really been fighting the top heavyweights. Its either Silva or GSP at this point because they dont lose. I'm sure Fedor would rather have been losing for 4 & 1/2 rounds and come away with a win than have that loss.

Doesnt matter what Chael did tonight, Silva still has that belt.

Nah, he didn't take a lot of damage. I think Sonnen just lacks punching power, because Silva did more strike damage in that match from his back. His elbows are lethal at any distance, from any position. I'd love to see a rematch.

For the record, I believe Silva sustained the rib injury he's claiming. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt until they prove to be untrustworthy. Not really getting into the P4P debate, since I think it's a little senseless and a lot subjective. Plus Silva is starting to get up there in age. I expect a decline at some point. For most if not all of his 12 win undefeated reignt of terror in UFC, I think he was the best fighter in the world.
