Re: UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones - 3/19 in NJ
jones fought a great fight obviously, but shogun didn't look close to what he looked like vs machida in their fights. I'm not trying to make excuses, hell I wanted to see Jones win, but Shogun looked exactly how he looked like against Forrest. out of shape, ring rusted and just not totally there.
I really dont want to try to take credit away from Jones because he is a terrific fighter, but I feel the fight woulda been a lot closer had Shogun been in fighting shape.
I'm no shogun fan, but i do hope he recovers physically and recoups and one day has a chance with Jones again. I still think Jones wins that fight because Shogun has an awful take down defense.
That's why many are saying Machida will fare much better, he has amazing TDD, so I hope he recoups as well and has a crack at Jones.
but congrats Jon bones.....you definitely are a deserving champion.Comment

Re: UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones - 3/19 in NJ
Yeah Randy will definitely test the TDD of Machida, because gurantee Randy is going to try to take him down over and over again, then ground n pound him all fight long. And when he isn't ground n pounding him, he is going to dirty box him up against the cage.
So I really hope Machida improved his stand up and stop dropping his hands so low, because if not, I can easily see Randy KO'ng him.
If Randy had problems taking Vera down, then he's going to have even more problems getting Machida to the ground. This is someone who was knocked down multiple times by the pillow hands of Nogueira. Machida is going to pick him apart standing.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

I hate to say I told you so but I told you so...
Bones is just on another planet...can't believe the dude has only been training for 3 years.
Insane.
He looked an entire weight class bigger than Shogun, Rogan mentioned it during the fight....that's where his advantage is. His length and reach makes it hard for anyone to get close enough to do damage.
I really don't know anyone at 205 that can even find any weaknesses to exploit...he does such a great job keeping everyone on the outside and even if they get close in like Shogun did a couple of times, he makes them pay.
If Dana insists on GSP vs. Silva, I'd love to see Bones fight Mousasi after he MDK's Rashad and Rampage.
Mousasi got raped by King Mo's wrestling.Comment

Good discussion going on in here. First off with his size, athleticism, instincts, skill and intellect, I think Bones has the potential to be in a class all by himself like GSP, Spider and Chuck in his prime.
That having been said, there are some serious tests ahead.
-rashad is from his camp which adds an X factor beyond his elite wrestling and quick, effective hands.
-you don't know how someone will fight Machida until they fight him. It's very hard to train for him. Bones reads spaces very well, like Roy Jones and Silva, but I still think machida can beat anyone on any given night.
-rampage is just a bull. I don't think he's smart enough to be a favorite, but he's throwing heavy stuff out there. Jones should be fine in a stand up but page can hurt you from almost any position.
All three guys have their hands full though.Comment

Agreed...just trying to think outside the box because I don't think there's anyone in the UFC at 205 that can challenge him.Patrick Mahomes > GodComment

Bones right now beats evans, machida and rampage I believe. Hes in that sick prime range where he can still make the lightest weight possible and have his height and length advantage. Eventually hes gonna have a tough time making 205 in the next few years. If he is matched up with silva or gsp in the near future, I think he will probably lose. Way too deep of waters for him unless hes able to land a flash KO early.Comment

Re: UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones - 3/19 in NJ
I'm really a fan of Jones so I could never see myself rooting against him (except against Rampage) but the "no one can challenge him talk" always makes me root against someone. Happened with Machida. I loved Machida before the T. Silva fight but after he beat him, the entire MMA community said he was unbeatable. That immediately made me want to see him get beat. Same goes for Lesnar. The only reason I was OK with Brock being dominant is because his high profile is great for the growth of MMA.
Jones can get caught and it wont be a "lucky" punch. The more he fights, the more tape people get on him. I can promise you the guys at Wolfslair (Rampage's camp) or Team Quest (where Rashad is rumored to train) or Blackhouse (Machida's camp) are watching fights looking for holes and gameplanning. Shoot, I've seen a few holes just from watching the Rua fight and I'm just a casual MMA fan. That spinning back elbow that he loves to throw is rarely accurate and leaves him open for a counter. He tried it in the first, missed it but Rua was too slow to counter it. He threw it again in the third, missed it and Rua clinched him from behind but was so gassed he couldnt do anything about it.
Everybody talks about Jones' reach but he doesnt use his jab enough to use that advantage consistently. He doesnt fight from the outside because his goal is to get inside and get a takedown. So his reach while nice isnt something that he uses enough to make it a huge factor. If anything his height is more of a factor. At 6'4, people are basically having to step in and throw haymakers to connect.
Strangely enough I think Machida has the best shot at beating him. His patience, defensive wrestling, defense and striking could be enough to grind out a decision. Not likely but I think he has a shot.Comment

Re: UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones - 3/19 in NJ
Well, before the fight I said I wasn't completely ready to hop on the Bones hype train because he hadn't fought a big name yet. After his total destruction of Shogun I am ready to hop on it. Shogun isn't old or washed up. He looked slow because Jones was at another level. I always knew he had the skill set but I wanted to see it used against top level competition. That was insane, I totally didn't expect him to run through Rua like that. I thought he had a very good chance at winning, just not like that. It looked like Shogun started to tap right as Herb was ending the fight. Wow.
I'm hoping Urijah coaches opposite of Cruz for the next TUF. I want to see that rematch at the lower weight class. Faber dominated the first fight at 145 so I am curious if Cruz is any faster at 135. Though Faber looks like even more of a beast at 135. I love that these guys are in the UFC now. They are all very deserving.PSN: ScoopBrady

Why not gracie? He has the best grappling in mma imo, and while his striking is still raw, it will only improve. Plus he has a 79" which helps against jones, him not having a 12 inch reach advantage like in every fight.Cincinnati Reds University of Kentucky Cincinnati Bengals
