    Re: WWE Network Discussion Thread

    Unpopular opinion alert:

So I grew up watching both WWF and WCW. I watched here and there during the 80's, cartoons were still my sole focus at that point lol. I started REALLY watching during the new generation years when Bret and Shawn had taken over and unfortunately over in WCW Hogan was feuding with the Dungeon.

So anyway, back in the day we only had two tvs with cable in the house and my mom and dad occupied them both, didn't like wrestling and gave no ****s about really sharing when there was something on they wanted to watch. So there's a lot of Raw's and Nitro's that I didn't get to see all of or any at all because of this arrangement. Also being as I was always a bigger WWF fan than WCW, I tended to watch more Raw during the main events than Nitro. So there are some episodes of Nitro where I'm seeing everything for the first time ever and I have to say.....Sting during the nWo angle is so overrated. I don't understand the Sting hype. His gimmick was a straight ripoff of the Crow like pretty much all of his gimmicks were ripoffs, he was good in the ring when he actually did wrestle, but I don't get the hype behind Sting in the nWo storyline. 18 months of this dude dropping down from the ceiling and single handedly beating the entire nWo with one hand? He would literally clear the ring with one hand holding the top rope and tossing chops on eight guys with the other hand. It's insane to me how hyped Sting is during that timeframe and I won't even go into the Starrcade '97 debacle.

It's simple really; if you didn't experience it as it happened, it's not going to have nearly the same effect as watching it for the first time now, in 2016. Everything happening at the time was new and exciting, especially moreso as a kid watching it. I think you're my age right? I'm 29. So being 9-10 years old as this was going on, it was ****ing awesome. But I'm with you in a sense because as I was rewatching RAW/Nitro on the Network (if you can call it that since I skipped like 90% of each show), I lost interest in WCW once I hit about March 1998. Definitely not the same watching it now, but back then? Nothing like it and one of my fondest memories.

I'm a little older than you. 32, I saw some of it as it was happening with WCW and I thought the same thing then. Not quite as much as I think it now, but my friend and I would talk about it and we weren't that big on Sting's act when we saw it. I did like it when he joined the Wolfpack though.

I saw the Crow Sting thing as it happened, and I didn't really care much about it. Aside from the fact that it was presented (ie: booked) as a big deal, I was never a mark for the NWO vs Sting storyline.

Also, the Sting/Hogan match at Starrcade was complete trash. Not that it should have surprised anyone, considering their styles didn't go well together. Sting could be very deliberate with his comebacks. I will give WCW credit for building up to that match for as long as they did. They did originate the whole "give PPV main event level matches for free just because" style of booking.

(I was able to watch both Raw and Nitro back then because my cable provider had the live East coast feed of TNT, but the West coast feed of USA for some reason.)

That's actually how I feel about Steamboat vs Savage. I'm not taking anything away from the match, but if you didn't see it live and you know what the outcome is going to be, it's hard to get the same effect from the match

Someone finally gets it. I wouldn't even go that far as for the reasons. I just think it's not a match that stands up against time. I've watched it about 2 or 3 times trying to see the "magic". Nope.

I'm the same way. I was actually quite bored watching it.

I think the Steamboat/Savage match is a great one but I can see how others don't enjoy it much. I think it's one of the first matches that really used the "false finish through consecutive pins" combination that became a big staple of wrestling especially these days.

Yeah, a ton of two counts in that match. It's hilarious to watch ref Dave Hebner during that match, cuz he is completely exhausted halfway through, and that's when the quick pin attempts really kick in.

Main difference between then and now, re: false finishes: they didn't kick out of each other's finisher multiple times. Ref was out cold when Macho hit his elbow, and Steamboat never hit his finisher.

If we're talking classic matches that are somewhat overrated, I'll throw in Savage/Warrior at WM 7. Easily Warrior's best match, but by any other standard it is just slightly above average. Macho deserves all the credit for making it that good, and the post-match turn was amazing, but Warrior was pretty much trash in the ring. Heenan and Monsoon elevated the match as well. Still, it's a chore for me to make it through that match, and I'm a total mark for that era of WWF.

I thought Rude got a pretty damn good match out of The Warrior at WM 5. He was the perfect opponent for Warrior, Rude could bump like a madman

Well you know somethin' brother? That wasn't Warrior's best match dude!! I remember a match from just a year earlier brother. It was the Hulkamaniacs vs. the Warriors in the Skydome brother.

I was under the impression that match didn't take place, because The Warrior hijacked Hoke Hogan's plane, ripped down the cockpit door, injected the pilot with poison, and took the plane in to a nose dive straight to parts unknown
