Missed it by just over a week, but Smackdown April 29 1999, the first episode (but it wouldn't be a weekly tv show until August).

Show featured XPac and Kane vs NAO, Shamrock vs Bradshaw, a main event of Austin,Rock vs Corporate Ministry members HHH and Undertaker, and Owen Hart/Blue Blazer vs Val Venis in Owens only match ever on Smackdown and his last televised singles match.

Lol. To me that segment is more evidence that Vince didn't actually care about the Curtain Call. It was the old school guys in the back who were in his ear telling him he should be mad. From what I've heard he approved it before it happened. He knew HBK and those guys were money, and it really wasn't that big of a deal to do that on a house show.

It's super weird reading people be critical of AEW taking shots at WWE in 2019... when pretty much everyone now admits that 2018-2019 was a very low point for WWE lol. It was the perfect time for AEW to debut.

But at the same time, just as much as today, your whole thing can't just be "we're not WWE". 18-19 wasn't the best (though some of it is still better than lots of what we saw from 11-15). And even today they're still taking shots at WWE. Just looks cheap.

They've lost a lot of traction because since practically day one it's been about 'mocking' the biggest dog, instead of building their own identity - outside of indy bull**** on TV - to thrive long-term.

It'll take something monumental for AEW to get back on track and on an upward trajectory like the first 3 years (and that first PPV).

Spoiler: they don't have it. WWE turning a corner was the worst thing that could've happened for them. They can either be the anti-WWE (which would be weird since who would be anti-success) or WWE lite (at which point, why bother watching them). They're somehow trying both?

Best they can hope for is to stay in the solid spot they're in and remain a viable spot for guys to work - above TNA but clearly not in the big leagues.

We'll see how this post ages in another five years, I guess.

I guess I just never saw it as excessive "we're not them," vibes, or even that being a bad thing necessarily, especially at the beginning. WWF and WCW did things like that constantly in the 90s.

I do agree that 2018-2019 wasn't some isolated down period for WWE. Weekly program was rough from like 2009 onwards.

09-19 WWE was pretty bad overall but we’ll always have the random week-long Bret Hart US Title reign

WWE and WCW did it during a time where there was an actual rivalry going on.

                              Now, its like the
                              AEW: "I hate you"
WWE: "I don't even think about you at all"

I known people say certain years were bad, but 16-17 was good.

And all years/shows have its great and horrible moments.

That Bret title win I loved just because of the crowd reaction for it.

But the tough part for the early 10s in general was that it was basically the end of the ruthless Aggression era guys (we saw the likes of HBK, Batista, Edge, HHH, Undertaker, Kane and others either retire or become part time) and the FCW/NXT guys taking over either weren't ready yet or just weren't cared about by management.

                                Plan B

All their careers have been huge ever since the shield broke up, but this moment and the group as a whole will always be part of their legacy.

Even for Reigns, while Tribal Chief Reigns is him at his peak, this moment has followed him ever since.

From him snapping for really the first time since becoming the head of the Table when Rollins brought up turning on Reigns to him getting turned on with a chair shot by Sami, and then finally when he lost the title at WM thanks to all those interferences, but also him getting caught up on revenge for this specific moment which cost him everything.
