That is certainly part of it. But I also think "kayfabe is dead" plays a larger role.
We all knew it was scripted but we wanted to be lied to and we bought into the lie which allowed us to watch it almost like a genuine sporting event.

(rest of this is better suited for the off topic thread so if any wish to respond do so there, or you can just allow an old man to vent for a sec lol)

The death of kayfabe is deeper than just that daggum internet. Not sure how others feel but I feel like each "This is awesome!" chant is spitting on the grave of kayfabe.

Then there's sequences like this: https://youtu.be/gA0vjYbws78?si=tNYzI59eCJDFZq5p&t=90
Stuff like this immediately pulls me out of the "ride" and puts me into "these guys today don't understand the art of pro wrestling" which in turn primes me to peeking behind the curtain. Wrestling today being such a spot fest makes it hard for me to be duped. I want to just sit back and play along with the lie but they pull me out of it. Wrestling has lost the ability to work the con so now the fantasy booking is what keeps my interest.

Edit: This isn't my hard stance, more like a theory after I noticed some trends in where my attention went to during my '97 rewatch (short version, Ahmed Johnson couldn't work a match to save his life and each time he was on I found my thoughts turning to "I should google when they stopped pushing him" and those were almost the only time I wasn't just a happy mark)

Joe is gonna find his weekly YEET sign if it's the last thing he does.

New Days 10th anniversary is either gonna end with Big E keeping his brothers together or Festival of Friendship 2.0

Braun vs Bronson, we've see chairs and other weapons thrown at people before, but literally throwing a guy from the front row into Strowman!

That tag title match was a thing of beauty. I know we just got done talking about booking, but with one match they:
        1. had a championship up for grabs
        2. Continued to make Finn look strong ahead of Bad Blood
        3. Revived the frustration of Xavier Woods...
        4. With the option of bringing in LWO to further that angle

        10/10

I was sports entertained during the entire Braun-Bronson sequence.

And Ludwig needs to be on TV more often

Best Raw I've seen in a long time.

I was in favor of the move to 2 hours because 3 hours normally feels like a lot of filler but this was great end to end

Gentlemen, get you a girl who looks at you the way Rhea was looking at Jey. Also... I know Woods and Kofi talked before about how there were ideas to split the New Day before and they turned them down. I feel like whatever ideas there was before, likely involved Big E becoming a big star while Vince would one day decide to make Woods & Kofi apart of a release cycle or something stupid like that.

The fact they keep mentioning Big E tells me he's going to play a crucial part in whatever happens. Sure, he can't wrestle at the moment but even just doing promos he would help sell what is happening. That 10 year anniversary show is going to be a Festival of Friendship moment, or a DIY moment where they lose the match and when the fans are saying farewell to the New Day, the end credits pop up.... Woods turns on Kofi and destroys him.

Re: WWE RAW & Smackdown Thread

Good episode of RAW this week. Great Punk promo that wasn't kissing up to the fans. Just straight emotion and telling us that he wants to destroy McIntrye at Bad Blood. Dont hate the Sheamus/Dunne match. Although why the hell is Natalya picking up a win over Zoey Stark? Natalya does not need it at all. That Breakker/Jey Uso promo was fire though. Got me sold on the match and really made me believe that Breakker is destined to do bigger things in this company than his father. Jey Uso is just over though. What I have seen from him since this main event persona began has made him leagues above his twin brother.

Judgment Day defeated New Day in a tag team Title match. I continue to enjoy seeing what eventually happens with Xavier Woods. A break up will freshen things up. That segment between Braun Stroman/Bronson Reed was nuts. They just went out there to destroy each other. Who was the stunt performer Reed was throwing around though? Sami Zayn promo was good too as they are really letting this feud with Gunther play out. I think I enjoyed the Bianca/Iyo Sky match the most from RAW though. They have great chemistry together and loved that suicide dive to Bianca. Great finish to the match. So much chaos in the main event match between Priest/Dominik. Priest may have won the match but Judgment Day got a much needed beatdown on the faces to look strong. Loved the Liv/Rhea beatdown and Uso taking a spear from Breakker. This week's show got me reacting so that's a good thing.

If that were Jimmy instead of Jey.....Naomi is coming for blood.

E has to be back in this. I don't think he ever will or should compete again, but he has to be back as their manager. I still don't see a split happening. While New Day splitting would be up there with Festival of Friendship and "Plan B", it seems like they're adamant about their legacy being that they never split up. They might literally be the only notable group in wrestling history that never turned on each other.

I could see it more as a "one last ride" like we saw with the shield. E comes back to manage them during their final run as a team and maybe go the Danielson/Flair route where it's a "our next loss is our last (......for a while)".

Start it even before they challenge for the tag titles, give them one more run, and once they lose they're done as a team. Kofi years ago did say if it wasn't for New Day he'd probably have hung it up a while ago (and doesn't see himself continuing once the group was done), and Woods has a whole career outside of WWE already so I don't see them needing to continue an in ring singles career once the group disbands.

Even with context it still sounds crazy.

It reminds me of the freeway chase from Bad Boys 2.
                        "Did you see that?"
"He's throwing fans how can I not?!"

Melo: I haven't seen a chokejob this bad since the Kings lost to the Lakers.

                          Kings fans still catching strays.

That Reigns-Rhodes segment looked like something straight out of a movie. Almost thunderdome cinematic like. If that was a video aired the SD before WM, I'd have no problem with it. That was great.

I miss the Thunderdome era just because of how cool the cinematic matches we got were. Firefly Funhouse, Boneyard Match, the Swamp Fight between Bray & Braun, really forced WWE to think outside of the box. That segment was so good, given that College Football stadiums hold more people it does surprise me they haven't tried a Mania or Summerslam in one of those stadiums.

WWE now is making too much money to do another show without fans but would love a throwback PLE with every match being cinematic and taking place in different places or something like that.

If they ever want to do another "halftime heat" they probably could just make it a cinematic match that's already been filmed. Easy way to get a match done that's the length of halftime while not caring about not having fans there and it doesn't need to be live.

We might not get Custody of Dom ladder match pt2, or Dom on a pole match, but we're getting Dom in a shark cage!
