Re: Chicago Cubs: Breaking The Curse: 103 Years and Counting (The Show 12)

Cubs, Volstad, pick up first win against Reds

Cincinnati (AP) - In what was a pitchers duel between Chris Volstad and Bronson Arroyo the Cubs came out victorious. In the first 3 innings both teams had combined for just 1 hit. The Cubs however were able to string together some hits in the fourth and take the lead on a RBI double by Alfonso Soriano. That would prove to be enough for Volstad who pitched eight innings of shut out baseball. Carlos Marmol came in and slammed the door shut in the ninth inning picking up his 7th save.

Cubs Corner: Marmol has yet to blow a save, though he does have 2 losses on the year....The win puts the Cubs 0.5 games ahead of the Reds for first place in the Central....Despite a terrible batting average (.177) Bryan LaHair picked up his 5th double of the year....The Reds threw out two different runners at the plate which kept the game at 1-0.

Maholm pitches gem, Cubs take one from Reds

Cincinnati (AP) - Paul Maholm was able to get on the right side of things for the first time this year. Having gone 0-3 to start the year getting his first win had to be a great feeling. The Cubs struck in the first inning on Mike Leake and got two early runs which would be all Maholm needed.

Cubs Corner: Starlin Castro had the day off for fatigue....Bryan LaHair had his first multi-hit game of the year with 3 hits and two doubles....David DeJesus picked up his 8th stolen base on the year...The Cubs take a 1.5 game lead over the Reds and are going for the 3 game sweep tomorrow.

        Cubs Sweep Reds

Cincinnati (AP) - Today the Cubs took another from the Reds in Cincinnati. After going down 3-0 after three innings Dempster settled down and didn't give up another hit where as the Cubs offense exploded. The lineup was a makeshift group with a large number of starters getting the day off. They all came through big.

Cubs Corner: Starlin Castro hit his first home run of the season.....Reed Johnson had his first extra base hit....Joe Mather hit what should have been a home run in the 8th inning that bounced off of Ryan Ludwick's glove and wound up being a triple instead ..... Lendy Castillo has been perfect out of the bullpen this season and has yet to give up a run...The Cubs will now head back to Chicago to play the Los Angeles Dodgers who are currently in last place in the NL West with a record of 11-14.

Re: Chicago Cubs: Breaking The Curse: 103 Years and Counting (The Show 12)

Soto's Big Game extends Cubs streak to 4!

Chicago (AP) - Geovany Soto did it all on Friday. He went deep twice and just so happened to be the guy up at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the 9th in a tie game with a runner on third. Soto came dangerously close to getting his batting average above .200 for the first time this season and came through in the clutch. Matt Garza pitched 8 innings of 1 run baseball but it was wasted when Carlos Marmol gave up a 2 out 2 run bomb to Andre Eithier in the top of the 9th inning.

Cubs Corner: Soriano hit a triple in the 9th before a strikeout by Stewart and an Intentional Walk to LaHair to get to Soto....The Dodgers felt that the 2 home runs were flukes and would rather face a Righty Righty Match up in Coffey and Soto instead of Coffey and LaHair...Game 2 of the Series will pit Chad Billingsley against Jeff Samardzija...Dee Gordon left the game in the 8th inning with a Shoulder Strain, he was immediately placed on the 15 day DL and will miss 3-4 weeks, Dodgers called up 2B Joe Becker to take his spot on the roster.

Dodgers Rally Late to win game 2.

Chicago (AP) - The Cubs took an early lead in the 2nd inning going up by four runs. The Dodgers stayed in it and eventually were able to get to the Cubs bullpen. James Russell gave up 3 earned runs without recording a single out, those runs were surrendered while Kerry Wood was on the mound, but he also gave up one run of his own. Jeff Samardzija went 7 innings giving up only two runs.

Cubs Corner: Kerry Wood came in while the bases were loaded after James Russell surrendered 3 straight base hits...Manager Dale Sveum was none to pleased with Ian Stewart who had not one but two balls in the eight inning go right past his glove on the ground. "He should have dove" is all he would say....The rubber match between the two teams will pit Chris Volstad (1-1) against former Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly (3-1).

              Soriano On the Block

              Cubs entertaining offers for Soriano

Chicago (AP) - It is no secret that the Chicago Cubs are unhappy with how Alfonso Soriano has played in recent memory and it is no secret that his contract does not fit what Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are looking to accomplish. It was reported that the Cubs are actively shopping Soriano despite the free swinging Soriano being thier major source of power early in the season.

One member of the Cubs inner circle that requested not to be named stated "If we were to unload Alfonso (Soriano), I am sure that it would require us to pick up part of his contract. If we trade him we would obviously be looking to get younger and acquire some power into the lineup to replace his absence."

The Cubs could have a couple of viable power replacements already in the organization in Anthony Rizzo and Brett Jackson in Triple A Iowa, but seeing as the Cubs are currently fairing well with Soriano, there is no guarantee he will be shipped off.

                Cubs Get to Lilly early.

Chicago (AP) - Ted Lilly got tagged for 6 runs in only 3.2 innings of work. Geovany Soto who has gotten off to a rather slow start average wise hit his seventh home run of the season. Chris Volstad wasn't spectacular but did enough to get his second win of the season.

Cubs Corner: Alfonso Soriano was a late scratch from the lineup because of a foul ball off of his foot in batting practice, he was listed as day-to-day...Tony Campana was injured in the 8th inning of the game while making a diving effort at a sinking line drive; he was diagnosed with a bruised hand and will be day-to-day....The Cubs won their second straight series in the month of May...The Cubs next series will be in Chicago against the 12-17 Atlanta Braves

                  Delgado, Braves shutout Cubs

Chicago (AP) - Radall Delgado had a spectacular day on the hill, going the distance and gave up 6 hits, he also walked 4 batters but also was able to force 4 double play balls as well. A scary moment happened in the 7th inning when Braves Thirdbaseman Juan Francisco came up holding his shoulder. It was later diagnosed he had a tear in his shoulder and he will miss 1-2 months. The injury comes at the wrong time for the Braves who had just had to put Short Stop Jack Wilson on the DL with a Torn Calf who will miss about the same about of time. In a corresponding roster move the Braves called up Centerfielder Mycal Jones from Triple A; interesting to note is that Chipper Jones is currently in Double A for the Braves on a rehab assingment.

Cubs Corner: Alfonso Soriano is fully recovered from his buised foot and Tony Campana is fully healed from his bruised hand...Paul Maholm was has pitched well all year he just can't seem to get offensive help with a WHIP of 1.13...The Cubs still have a 2.5 game lead in the NL Central over the Reds...Maholm and the Cubs held NL Leading Hitter Jason Heyward to 0 hits in 4 at bats.... The next game will pit Livan Hernandez against Ryan Dempster.

Stewart goes deep twice in victory

Chicago (AP) - The Cubs were led to vidtory by Ryan Dempster who the distance while giving up only 1 run, which came in the 9th. The major offensive power for the Cubs was supplied by Ian Stewart who hit his 3rd and 4th homers of the season. While Cubs fans will remember prior seasons in which 3rd base was a constant supply of power, this year has not be the same but Stewart came through big with two bombs today.

Cubs Corner: The win puts the Cubs Even with the Braves on the season and in the sereis...The rubber match will put Matt Garza against Jair Jurrjens...David DeJesus picked up his 16th RBI out of the leadoff spot which ties him with Starlin Castro for first place on the team... Mycal Jones who was just called up for the Braves was injured while running the bases with a Pulled Hamstring; he will miss 2-3 weeks; in a corresponding roster move the Braves called Josh Wilson up from Triple A.

                      Freeman blasts Braves past Cubs

Chicago (AP) - Jair Jurrjens went down after just 2.1 innings with an apparent broken forearm. Jurrjens was injured 3 pitches before he was forced to come out of the game, which shows the toughness of Jurrjens to have pitched 3 pitches with a broken forearm . The Braves rallied behind that and got out to a 3-0 lead on the Cubs. It was for nought though as Craig Kimbrel blew his 2nd save today as the Cubs sent 8 men to the plate for 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning. The Braves were sparked by Freddie Freeman going deep to Left Center off of James Russell in the 11th inning which would be enough even after a Starling Castro double in the bottom of the inning.

Cubs Corner: In 3 games against the Cubs, the Braves lost 3 players; to replace Jurrjens they recalled Yohan Flande from Triple A... The Cubs lost the series to the Braves...The Cubs will have an off day before travelling to Milwaukee for a series...Castro retook sole possession of RBI leader for the Cubs with 18...

Brewers rock Samardzija on way to a win

Milwaukee (AP) - The league leading pitcher in ERA entering the game was Jeff Samardzija, that would not be how he exited the game. Giving up 8 runs in just 3 innings of work, albeit only 4 of them were earned. Yovani Gallardo was spectacular going 8.2 innings, he was only pulled after giving up a 2 out solo home run to Geovany Soto in the 9th.

Cubs Corner: This is Samardzija's first loss on the season...Travis Ishikawa went down in the 4th inning with an injury (a Finger Contusion) and will miss 3-4 weeks on the disabled list; in a corresponding roster move the Brewers recalled Eric Farris from Triple A Nashville...Geovany Soto is now tied for 1st in the National League in Home Runs with Mets Ike Davis and Brewers Corey Hart...Game 2 will pit former Marlin Chris Volstad (2-1) against former Blue Jay Shaun Marcum (2-3).

Dempster rocked as Cubs drop game to Cards

St. Louis (AP) - Ryan Dempster, the apparent ace of the Cubs staff, struggled against the Cards potent offense; he gave up 10 hits and 5 earned runs in just 5 and 2/3 innings. Cards starter Jake Westbook was pulled after 1.1 innings pitched because he sustained a strain in his neck that would have limited his finishing the game. The Cardinals staff gave up just 4 earned runs after that point. Lance Berkman was the player of the game after hitting a 3 run homer off of Dempster in the first inning.

Tough loss to the Cards. Hopefully Garza will get that win for you and salvage a split.
