Re: Chicago Cubs: Breaking The Curse: 103 Years and Counting (The Show 12)

    Brewers top Cubs in 10

Milwaukee (AP) - The Cubs and the Brewers went to extra innings....Again. This time the Brewers topped the Cubs 1-0 after 10 innings of play. Zack Grienke held the Cubs to just 3 hits over 8 innings and Francisco "K Rod" Rodriguez held the Cubs to 1 hit over 2 innings to pick up his first win of the year. Casey Coleman got saddled with the loss after being unable to get the last two outs in the 10th inning, his 2nd of the year. The winning hit was an RBI single (Would have been a double) by Rickie Weeks into the left Center gap.

Cubs Corner: The Cubs cutdown the winning run at the plate in the 10th inning to get the 2nd out, Tony Campana was unable to throw out the winning run for the 3rd out...Tony Campana stole his 19th base of the year....Casey Coleman falls to 1-2 on the year....While the game was taking place so too did the Major League Draft, the results of which will be posted here shortly.

      MLB Draft Results

The Cubs went into the draft with the 6th pick due to their record the previous year. The scouting department had been in flux because of the regime change and for that reason the majority of the Cubs picks were blind picks.

With the 6th pick in the draft the Cubs took a player, who on paper, looks like he can only be a superstar in the Majors.

Jason Givens, LF, L/L, 19, 6'4"/227. Givens comes in rated as a C overall as his contact, power, vision, clutch and durability are nearly through the roof. The problem with Givens is he is listed as having already hit his ceiling and is rated as having D potential.... Not the greatest pick for a 1st rounder if he only is going to get worse.

The Rest of the Cubs picks, were respectivly not as great, all except for 3rd round pick, 1B Alejandro Urban are rated as having potential as a D or below. Theo Epstien and the Cubs are hoping that the Cubs development staff will be able to get better results than expected. All players were signed to a 2 year deal in order to evaluate where they are before offering a new contract.

Cubs bats come alive to avoid sweep

Milwaukee (AP) - Jeff Samardzija picked up his 7th win of the season while Yovani Gallardo fell to 4-3. The Cubs who had just 9 hits in the previous 2 games of the series were able to collect 11 hits against the Brewers. Carlos Marmol picked up his 14th save of the year after loading the bases with a base hit and two walks in the 9th inning.

Cubs Corner: Jeff Samardzija now has 7 wins on the season....Carlos Marmol made it interesting but picked up his 14th save of the year...Joe Mather hit his 1st homer of the season, the 10th of his career...Ian Stewart hit his 6th homer of the year, the 60th of his career....In other news the Cubs recently received a phone call about a trade with the Philidelphia Phillies, more to follow.

          Phillies Approach Cubs about trade

It was leaked that the Philidelphia Phillies offered the Chicago Cubs a trade of

          Domonic Brown (RF, 24, L/L) (OVR: C) (Pot: A)
          Triple A Stats: .251 avg, 3 HR, 20 RBI, .374 OBP, 1 SB, 2 E

          Tyler Greene (SS, 19, R/R) (OVR: D) (Pot: B)
          Triple A Stats: .211 avg, 1 HR, 8 RBI, .278 OBP, 3 SB, 1 E

          For

          Nate Robertson (RP, 35, R/L) (OVR: D) (Pot: C)
          Triple A Stats: 3-0, 1.93 ERA, 1.07 WHIP

          Blake Dewitt (3B, 26, L/R) (OVR: C) (Pot: C)
          Triple A Stats: .252 avg, 2 HR, 16RBI, .326 OBP, 8 E

Decison will be made by the Cubs Staff in a couple of hours.

Editors Note: When I first looked at the trade I had the opinion that I was just fleecing the Phillies but after looking at stats of all players involved as well looking at the disabled list and stats for the MLB Phillies it makes good sense to me. I may try to counter and not fleece them so as to make more sense but here is a look at the Disabled List for the Phillies.

Blake DeWitt would be the starter for the Phillies in the Majors at 3rd with Polanco and Thurston as the only viable Competition and both of them being out 2 weeks to 2 months. Robertson would be in competition for a bullpen spot in the Majors for the Phillies as they only have 1 Left Hander in the Majors and 2 in AAA. All of the Phillies players would be in the Minors for the Cubs.

1B Ty Wiggington 1-2 Months (MLB)
3B Palcido Polanco 1-2 Months (MLB)
LF Lance Nix 1-2 Months (MLB)
RF Derrick Mitchell 3-4 Weeks (MLB)
CF Shane Victorino 2-3 Weeks (MLB)
3B Joe Thurston 2-3 Weeks (AAA)
2B Kevin Frandeson 1-2 Weeks (AAA)
2B Chase Utley 2-3 Weeks (MLB)
RP Brian Sanches 2-3 Weeks (AAA)
3B Pete Orr 1-2 Weeks (AAA)
LF Larry Greene 1-2 Weeks (AA)
CF Kyrell Hudson 6+ Months (AA)
2B Michael Martinez 1-2 Months (AA)
SP Trevor May 1-2 Months (AA)

I'll keep looking around at some stuff and see what I can find out before I make or decline this trade.

          Any opinions are welcome.

The Chicago Cubs countered with a proposal that would have the Phillies send a Player to be named later to the Cubs (Giving the Cubs time to clear a roster spot)

              For The Phillies:

Blake Dewitt will be sent to the Majors immediately where he will be the every day starter with injuries to not one but two players for the Phillies at the position. Dewitt will have the opportunity to win the job for not only this year but for a few years at the least as the Phillies are very old at the position where the 26 year old Dewitt plays.

Nate Robertson has seen time in a couple of different organizations and the Phillies are lacking Left Handed Relief pitching; Sources say Robertson is likely to stay in AAA for the time being but is likely headed for the 40 man roster for the Phillies and could quickly be called up if his performance continues. It is reported that Robertson was the icing on the cake for the Phillies.

              For the Cubs:

Tyler Greene is struggling to hit his weight in AAA for the Phillies and as such will be sent to AA for the Cubs in order to get some confidence back and progress into a solid SS/2B along with current Cubs Prospects Junior Lake and Javier Baez at the position. The Front office is hoping at least 1 or 2 of these guys turns into what they are capable of.

Domonic Brown has been the odd man out in Philidelphia for sometime now. Being stuck in triple A with very little hope of ever being a starter in Philly Brown should welcome the opportunity with open arms, as he is stuck behind Triple Crown candidate Hunter Pence. Brown will join Brett Jackson, Jorge Soler and Dave Sappelt as the AAA Cubs Outfielders, with one of the four serving as DH each game. Which means the future of the Cubs Outfield could wind up crowded with

LaHair, Sappelt, Jackson, Soler, Brown, Campana all being listed as Major League ready along with a few prospects at the positions as well, not to mention David DeJesus, Reed Johnson and Alfonso Soriano all currently at the Major League level. What once looked like a weakness could now be considered as the depth of the team..

There is no telling who the player to be named later will be but it is speculated that it will be a Starting Pitcher. The name of 21 Year old Brody Colvin has been thrown around as the Phillies are quietly shopping him as they don't feel he will ever crack their rotation.

The Paper work has been sent to the Commissioners office and will take a day or two in order for the paperwork to be finalized.

All Players are expected to be pulled from their lineups because of the potential deal.

                  Former Cub blanks current Cubs

Minnesota (AP) - Jason Marquis got the last laugh today, as the starting pitcher who was cast off by the Chicago Cubs in a previous offseason Marquis came out with a grudge against the Cubbies. Marquis struck out 8 while only giving up 4 hits and didn't allow a runner to get past 2nd base. Travis Wood who was making his Cubs debut didn't fare as well as he was rocked for 5 runs in 5 innings of work.

Cubs Corner: Wood drops his first game as a Cub...The Cubs were being No-Hit until the top of the 6th inning by Marquis until Jeff Baker and Darwin Barney got back to back hits....James Russell and Casey Coleman put out the fire as they allowed just 1 base runner in their 3 innings of work out of the pen...The Cubs and Phillies Trade was approved, details of player movement to follow.

Aquire Domonic Brown (RF), assigned to AAA Iowa
Acquire Tyler Greene (SS), assigned to A Daytona
Acquire Perci Garner (SP), assigned to AA Tennessee (He was the Player to Be named later in the trade)
Promoted Trey McNutt (SP) from AA Tennessee to AAA Iowa
Move Ryan Rowland Smith (SP) from AAA Iowa Rotation to AAA Iowa Bullpen
                    Release Matt Camp (SS)

                    Phillies Player Movement:
Acquire Blake Dewitt (3B), Assigned to AAA
Acquire Nate Robertson (RP), Assigned to AAA

Kind of perplexing that the Phillies assigned both to AAA when the reason they wanted DeWitt was to play in the Majors....Maybe they just havent had the opportunity to move him up yet.

Maholm gets no run support, Cubs blanked...again

Minnesota (AP) - The Cubs got a strong outing from Paul Maholm who gave up 2 runs in the 4th inning and only allowed 6 hits through 8 innings. The Cubs however did what they have most of the year, didn't support Maholm in his struggle to find wins. Maholm now has 8, count em, 8 quality starts and just a record of 2-6 to show for it. The Twins were able to capitalize on their 6 hits and push two across with 3 of those 6 hits coming in the 4th inning leading to runs. The Twins look for the sweep on the struggling Cubs bats tomorrow.

Cubs Corner: Paul Maholm gets no help again, 8 quality starts in 12 starts and just a 2-6 record...Bryan Lahair and David DeJesus both made their 4the errors in the game but neither error cost the Cubs other than more pitches for Maholm....Jeff Baker had a pinch hit base hit in the 9th....Geovany Soto hit his 9th double....Tony Campana and Starlin Castro stole a base, their 20th and 22nd respectively...Scheduled starters for Game three are Ryan Dempster (5-4, 2.06) and rookie Kyle Gibson (1-2, 5.63) who was recalled following injury to Francisco Liriano.

Cubs put up Goose egg for Series

Minnesota (AP) - Ryan Dempster picks up his 5th loss on the season as the Twins sweep the Cubs. The problem with this is that the Cubs for the third straight game are held from reaching the plate, not to mention that the only run the Twins scored was an unearned run from a botched double play by Starlin Castro. The Cubs looked primed to strike in the 9th with a lead off double by Bryan Lahair but pinch runner Reed Johnson was stranded on 3rd base to end the game.

Cubs Corner: Castro's error is his 14th.....The only extra base hit was the double in the 9th by Lahair, his 15th....Dempster picks up his 5th loss on the season.....Castro stole his 23rd base while Campana was caught for the 8th time....Michael Bowden remained nearly perfect with a perfect 8th inning...The Cubs have an off day before they go back to Chicago to play the AL Central leading Tigers, which will bring Prince Fielder back to Chicago.

Cubs offense ends drought in wild game

Chicago (AP) - In a game that saw the Cubs getting no hit until late in the 5th inning it turned into a barn burner. From the 5th inning to the 9th the Cubs collected 13 hits. After a 2 run base hit from a pinch hitter of Jeff Baker the Cubs got back into the game and a 2 run blast by Bryan Lahair put the Cubs into the lead. The Tigers roared back with a 4 run 9th inning that was off of Miachel Bowden and Carlos Marmol. Jeff Russell shut the door down and the Cubs were able to collect the win after a 2 out base hit by Starlin Castro after getting David DeJesus to 3rd.

Cubs Corner: The win puts Jeff Russell at 3-4 on the year...David DeJesus, Starlin Castro and Alfonso Soriano all hit their 7th doubles while Ian Stewart picked up his 16th...DeJesus hit his 9th triple, a NL leading number....Bryan LaHair collected his 3rd homer of the season....Starlin Castro committed his 15th error while Alfonso Soriano committed his 1st....The Cubs runs in the 6th inning ended the scoreless streak at 35 innings...The win snaps the Cubs losing streak at 3, tied for their longest of the season...

Tigers make move with Reds from Chicago

                            Breaking News!

Chicago (AP) - Following the game against the Tigers the Cubs front office found out some news. The Tigers had made a deal with the Cincinnati Reds during the game and it was made official at the Tigers post game pres conference.

The Tigers get catcher Ryan Hanigan who is hitting .306 with 2 homers and 15 RBI's on the year to join Gerald Laird as a back up backstop to Alex Avila.

The Tigers also receive Didi Gregorius, a B potential Shortstop who will be promoted to Triple A in the Tigers organization.

The Reds in return get 27 year old Max Scherzer who was the odd man out in the Tigers pitching staff with a 5-5 record and a 3.31 ERA through 70.2 innings of work.

Scherzer was made expendable when the Tigers signed Jon Garland to fill their rotation. Hanigan was likewise made expendable with the surge of hitting skill by Devin Mesoraco in his rookie year.

Whether Hanigan will make it to Chicago to face the Cubs in game 2 is unknown.

New Owner, Getty51, talks curse and current season

Q: As this is our first interview with you, how do you feel about the Curse that haunts the Cubs and the streak of 103 years?

Getty51: Well, my Dad is a Cubs fan and I have been a life long Cubs fan I know all about the curse. I've grown up always hoping that each year would finally be the year. I know most people remember the Bartman fiasco but.....That was really tough for everyone involved, I'm sure Steve felt terrible and if he is out there and reads this, I would like to extend my deepest regret for how the situation was handled not just as the Current owner of the Cubs but as a Cubs fan.

Q: I'm sure most Cubs fans would feel the same way. How do you feel about the current season as a whole?

Getty51: Well, I think we are doing very well, better than I'm sure most Cubs fans expected and, honestly, better than how I expected us to do at this point. The way the NL Central is shaping up you can never be too comfortable as everyone can get hot and cold in such a big and competitive division.

Q: Many question your recent trade with the Phillies as both players traded, Nate Robertson and Blake Dewitt, were expected to give some help to a team lacking in Left Handed relief and a young utility player.

Getty51: Well we felt it would be best for everyone. We really liked Blake and Nate but felt it would be better for them to both get a chance to get on the field in the big leagues sooner. We feel what we got in return could be the perfect value in return. Dominic Brown has the abilty to play at the Big League level immeadiately and will compete with Brett Jackson and Dave Sappelt to see who is the first one called up. Tyler Greene is a good young shortstop who needs a change of scenery as he is struggling with the bat. And the pitcher we got, Perci Garner, is the type of guy who could end up making for a good long reliever in the bigs as he has all the right tools.

Q: Many feel the addition of Greene in the trade was unneeded as the Cubs have Starlin Castro, Javier Baez, Junior Lake and others of good youth at Shortstop and Tyler Greene may end up getting stuck behind the logjam and that the Cubs should have tried to get another pitcher in the deal.

Getty51: We are of the belief that you can never have too many shortstops. If one or two of them struggle having another 2 in the wings is a good thing. Worst case scenario they may have the ability to try a different position.

Q: Many are calling for Darwin Barney to be benched as he has a very low batting average, Manager Dale Sveum says that he doesn't plan to do this anytime soon. What is your though about this?

Getty51: I agree wholeheartedly with Dale. Ya if you look at the stat line Darwin looks like he is struggling, in reality it just may be the unluckiest hitter in the lineup right now. Darwin is hitting the ball extremely hard and very well but it just so happens that he hits the ball right at people. He is still the best defensive player on the field for us, he makes plays that most no one else would make and because of that I fully support the manager in his decision of starting Darwin.

Tigers go deep 4 times, get win

Chicago (AP) - Both Starters of the game, Jon Garland and Jeff Samardzija gave up 4 earned runs through 6 innings and neither of them were able to factor in the decision of the game however. Shawn Camp didn't fair as well as the rest of the players who came out of the bullpen for both teams; Camp gave up 4 hits, and only 2 earned runs out of 3 because of his own error. The Tigers tied the series with game 3 on the way.

Cubs Corner: Shawn Camp had his first error of the season in his loss, also his first....Starlin Castro hit his 8th double, Geovany Soto hit his 10th, Ian Stewart hit his Cubs leading 17th....Alfonso Soriano hit his 12th home run and knocked in his 35th RBI....
