    Re: Sunrise In San Diego

March 5th- The Padres got their rears handed to them again by the Mariners as they got 14 hits and 4 runs. Andrew Cashner screwed up today allowing 3 runs over 1/3 of an inning. The good news is both Wieland and Marquis struck out 1 and allowed 0 runs. offensively we were not very good and this is going to be a major issue in season.

Wieland did a great job. He knows that his spot is on the line and he's going to do everything he can to keep it. Offensivly we hit quite a few balls hard and that was a big key for us.

Now deep within the confines of the Padres spring training complex, Joe Wieland whispers, your move Marquis....

      SPRING TRAINING
      DAY 6

George McGovern sat out in the stands watching his padres tee off on Barry Zito. McGovern had always liked Zito. He sat there watching him and realized, that his team needed more pitching depth. After all, they were pretty short on pitchers that could bounce between AAA and MLB. Then his cell phone interrupted his thoughts.

McGovern had liked Noesi ever since he dealt against the Padres in the first game of Spring Training. "This is going to be a good piece for the Padres..." Thought McGovern.

            Re: Sunrise In San Diego

MAY 14TH- So for today's spring match-up, we pit our Padres against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks are an organization built around pitching and it definitely showed as they dealt against our guys for most of the game. Cameron Maybin, the newly minted shortstop helped us out in his first start and helped us win the game. Our pitching was so, so. Bass wasn't very impressive. He has a good fastball but unless he develops a good offspeed offering, he's looking at long relief to start out the year. On another important note, Jason Marquis worked up to 2 innings and threw 2 scoreless ones. He's going to make probably 1 more 2 inning deal then pitch out of the pen for 3 and increase his innings till he gets to 7. At this point, its clear that we are going to require a massive overhaul of the pitching staff.

In our first matchup with the Dodgers this year we shut them out and put our foot on their throat. We play them again on the 27th and I want to beat the snot out of them again. It would be a huge moral victory if we can beat our divisional rivals.

Rainy at 1st pitch, Richard must like throwing in the rain because he struck out all but one of the hitters he faced.

Now since I am a Royals fan, I can't stand Chris Perez. Sometimes he needs to learn to be quiet like today when he yelled something a Chase Headley after he struck him out. Headley was fired up but didn't want to rock the boat.

These types of loses get me fired up. Clayton Richard struck out all but one batter he faced and allowed two runs to score. The offense just died for the rest of the game and we stranded runners in scoring position for just about every inning with less than 2 outs. Then we get a break in the bottom of the ninth, Yonder Alonso leads off with a triple. On the next play, the third basemen dives for a line drive and tags Alonso who was trying to get back to the bag. This was a poor showing, even for a Spring Training game.

On the bright side, Hector Noesi pitched well and I am now considering him for a rotation spot. He has a 0.90 ERA and 10 strikeouts.

It was nice to win another ball game and get above .500 for the Spring. I liked how we answered their run and thats something I would like to see us do more often.

Even though we won and Edison Volquez threw great, it wasn't a good win because we scored in the 1st and 2nd innings and not the rest of the ball game. I was impressed with the way the team pressed and how Carlos Quentin broke up his cold streak.

The Diamondbacks came back to play us again. It was Joe Saunders again. We barely hit off him. We scored twice however we Diamondbacks scored in 3 different innings and we failed to answer those runs. We can not have that if we want to be competitve.

We had a chance to keep rolling along and this was Anthony Bass' last chance to claim the rotation spot but he failed so now its going to be up for grabs. Joe Wieland has now taken the 4 spot in the rotation and Marquis and Noesi will compete for the 5 spot with the loser going to the minors/pen. Lineup with, Jason Bartlett has cooled off and we are going to give Kyle Blanks a shot.

Probably the most important game of the Spring. We got to their starter early then had 2 big unanswered innings and won the ball game. Clayton Richard pitched well and figures to be our opening day guy if he can put together one more good start.

Once again, it was raining at the A's Spring Training complex and guess who brought it this time:

                    With the bat....

                    And the glove.

Two inside the park homeruns, one of which was a grand slam, Complimented by several plays in the hole and short choppers that he made Derek Jeter plays on.

This was a fun game to play and it was the last one of Spring Training as we now head to PETCO for an exhibition game against the Royals. We are going to hand Cory Luebke the ball and if he pitches well enough, he will be the team's number 1 and opening day starter. Clayton Richard pitched poorly all Spring and doesn't deserve the nod. Our Opening Day Roster will be announed with the Spring Roster stats after this exhibition game.

Spring Training really tells a lot. It gives you a sample of what your players are going to do. By looking at these stats, the members of our projected starting rotation project to post stats that are basically the same. Our strikeout to walk ratio is really poor and I would like to see us get better at that as the season goes on. This shows us that our lineup is going to be far from expected going into the year.

                      We finished the spring with:

                      13-13 Record
                      3.17 Team ERA
                      .252 Team Batting average.

Not bad but far from where we want to be by the end of the year. I think its safe to say that you're in for a few surprises on that Opening Day Roster.

I've heard that sound 3 times... once was Babe Ruth, the second was Josh Gibson, and the third was Bo Jackson- Buck O'Neil

                        Re: Sunrise In San Diego

Alright so our new found Rivals, the Kansas City Royals decided to challenge us to a little exhibition game on our own turf. Well we might as well make this clear, nobody challenges the Padres to an exhibition game on our turf and gets away with it.

Things unfortunatly went horribly wrong in the 1st inning as Luke Hochevar struck out 8 consecutive batters before a fluke play landed us a base runner. We gladly took a hold of that opportunity and walked then bunted both guys into scoring position. Yonder Alonso came up and hit an absolute bomb into right center that Lorenzo Cain made a diving grab and threw from his knees to home and almost got the second runner out.

Things went even better on the other side of the ball, Cory Luebke threw 5 innings of 1 hit ball and has now effectively established himself as our staff ace.

Meanwhile, Anthony Bass allowed 2 runs across in 1/3 of an inning before he was yanked signifying the last time he will ever pitch for the Padres in the MLB. Peace out Bass!

Then in the top of the 9th, Huston street came on to face the 7, 8 and 9 batters. He retired the first two quickly then up came little Timmy Collins.

While we laughed our faces off, Collins dug in and took a 2 strike pitch right up the middle. Luckily we'd work out of it and win the game. And thus, the game set our Major League Roster.

Chase Headley lost out on his spot after that altercation and for swinging an bat of ice at the plate. We're a little short on depth so Will Venable is going to play third for a little while. Our bench has quite a few good bats but we're a little short on the clutch side of things. The middle of our order didn't play out like we though it would so we are going to be mixing and matching in the first few days to find a lineup that works.

We really had to scrape the barrel to put this roster together and I hope this isn't an annual thing.

                        Now for the real fun!!!!

                          Re: Sunrise In San Diego

Alright here we go! Finally Opening Day! No more of this Spring Training BS. Now before we get to the game, take a look at the Unis for today:

Yeah Boss! Reppin old school from the days of Steve Garvey, Dave Winfield, Tony "Mr. Padre" Gwynn and Goose Gossage! There was no better time to wear these than opening day against our arch enemy, the Dodgers.

Then from out of the abyss that is the Dodger's dugout, a lone figure launches his lanky frame out of the dugout and jogs to the bump.

That's right, Clayton "Kenny Rogers" Kershaw.

Some of you may ask "Whats up with the middle name?" Well about once a season, Kershaw takes the bump at PETCO and deals us strikeouts all, frickin, game, long.

So early in the 1st inning, Kershaw was cruising along then he got to Carlos Beltran and pelted him with 98 in the hip. Beltran took his base and Kershaw tried not to look at him. We thought nothing of it until again, Kershaw hits Beltran again but this time yells at him. The benches clear and a few choice words where exchanged between managers but no one was ejected.

What a punk. He's lucky we didn't retaliate today. But I think we'll go ahead and hit Matt Kemp a few times tomorrow.

However, Beltran got his revenge, not on Kershaw, but Beast Mode himself.

The fool thought he could beat out Beltran! But what he didn't take into account was that Beltran was a Fire Chief and got absolutely hosed.

I think that name fits nicely Fire Chief Beltran (we'll work on it.)

However, that wasn't the icing on the cake, this was:

Either Don Mattingly had enough and was embarrassed or Beast Mode cried himself off the field we'll never know. But what we do know is that Tony Gwynn Jr. replaced him in center the next inning hopefully Kemp plays next game so we can hit him. (Harsh I know but this is Padres Baseball!)

So meanwhile while we got all this crap happening on offense, lets take a look at Cory Luebke.

Luebke pitched 7 strong innings before departing to avoid fatigue for his next scheduled start. He had the Dodgers off balance all night. I noticed he's an effective guy when he consistently throws first pitch strikes and gets ahead early.

Now before we get to the end, lets take a look at Cameron Maybin's first Double Play at short.

Now apparently, Dee Gordon wanted to be a punk and take out our Franchise Player but Maybin says "F it" and hops over the fool and rifles a strike to Alonso for an inning ending double play. We can't teach that, we can't teach that.

Looks like San Diego has the next #DatdudeBP at shortstop.

Now even though Clayton Kershaw struck out 9 we pulled a rabbit out of our hats and put up a nice 2 spot in the run column. Which was good enough for the win.

Yessir! First W of the year!

Alright, we had the series finale of the Dodgers-Padres on tap now. Now I know, its only been two games since the 1st one I played. I know that. But I couldn't resist the allure of playing Joe Wieland's debut. But hold on lets take a look at our Unis for today's ball game.

Those are some spiffy duds we got for Sunday! However, that's not the story today. This isn't an editorial from GQ (sorry to disappoint) No this is baseball...

                            ****NOTE*****
Padres will always wear Camo on Sundays.

We have to introduce to you our starter. Joe "Wheelin Dealin" Wieland.

The Rookie? On the first Sunday of the year?

                            You betcha.

Now before we get on to Sunday's game today. We have to send a shout out to Tim "Half Staff" Stauffer who screwed up his arm. We tried to get the Owners to fly the Padres flag at half staff but they disapproved. Stauffer was originally the Organization's ace but no longer!

Alright I've kept you waiting long enough.

Alright so you get a nice little view of Wieland's pitches but out of all of those, the fastball would garner the most attention.

That's right, looking at you Matt Kemp.

                            FLASHBACK
On Opening Day, Clayton Kershaw hit Carlos Beltran twice on Purpose.

Now the Pads want a little revenge and before Wieland took the bump, the pitching coach whispered something in his ear. The cameras caught it but no one could tell what was said.

Wieland got 1 out then allow a cheep bunt single to Dee Gordon before Matt "Beast Mode" Kemp stepped in the box.

WHAMM! 93 In the back! So Kemp took first base like I feel ya but don't do it again. Now what happened next?

                            WHAMMM! 91 in the back!

                            91 In the Leg!

So after being hit 3 straight times, Kemp was digging in with a vengeance. He figured that they where done but the bruises still hurt.

Wieland wound up and unleashed 93 into the neck.

Beast mode kicked in and Kemp tried to tackle Wieland but Wieland pulled a Nolan Ryan on him and beat the living Beast Mode out of him.

Then in the 9th inning, a little calmer he stepped in the box when Dustin Mosley put 98 right on the dome! And Kemp fell, defeated, to the ground, in agony.

Now that we got that Matt Kemp story out of the way, we can pick on our own team. First what the hail Yondor Alonso? What the hail?

The fool can't make a play at first to save his life!

                            EXHIBIT A:

This would have gotten us out of the inning but Alonso dropped it and loaded the bases.

Now lets move on to a positive note, The Padres outfield has a new name, Ladder 789 because they are hosing runners left and right!

Now before we close up, we have to bring up the Dee Gordon deal, now since he hit before Kemp, on every single time he got on, they tried a hit and run. Gordon always got on 2nd so in the 9th inning he got a base hit then our catcher absolutely hosed him on a pitchout.

Now in one more twist of Irony, even though he had 4 hit batters, Wieland still was the Player of The Game. Really makes you wonder who's picking these guys for this honor...

                            PADRES WIN: 2-1

                              Re: Sunrise In San Diego

Alright so after an off day, the Padres play the D-Backs at home in another crucial series. However, the Padres dropped the 1st to games of the series to Trevor Cahill and Joe Saunders, both of which gave us fits in Spring Training. We decided to just roll over and die in the 1st game losing a forgettable 9-0. In the second game, we fell apart and lost 5-2.

Today, in the final day of the series, we decided it was much to early to take our 1st sweep of the year and we put up a not so gallant last stand. We sent Clayton Richard to the mound to face off against Ian Kennedy.

George McGovern is not particularly high on Richard and he even put together a three exhibit presentation as to why.

                              EXHIBIT A:

                              A 1:1 K-BB Ratio? Hail No!

                              EXHIBIT B:

Destroys all morale this team is somehow able to put together.

                              EXHIBIT C:

He's a crybaby and as Tom Hanks once put it, "There's no crying in baseball!"
Now with that, lets get onto the game.

Richard completely F'd up his start so we dug into the bullpen early. However lets talk about our offense today.

Yeah not pretty, I have no idea how we won the Dodger series but now I know why we dropped the first two games of the D-Backs series.

We decided to give Beltran the day off after hitting an awful .150.

Well lets be honest. Ian Kennedy was dealing today we scratched him a few times but really got him in the 7th when the rest of our lineup was inspired by the heroics of Cameron Maybin, Yonder Alonso and Dinorfia.

Maybin got it done with bunting and baserunning.

Alonso would move him over then Denorfia would hit the ball hard.

When the whole offense ignited in the 7th, This play gave us the go ahead,

A rare error by the third baseman.

Then by the heroics of Huston Street who literally saved the game for us after our bunt defense failed.

                              Thus the result was:

Probably our best win yet! (Doesn't say much)

I've heard that sound 3 times... once was Babe Ruth, the second was Josh Gibson, and the third was Bo Jackson- Buck O'Neil

I don't understand what you are doing with moving Venable to 3B and benching your best hitter? Headley sprays line drives, that is all he does!
