Jordan Lyles wiping his brow after another difficult outing
HOUSTON, TX-- The Houston Astros have played a lot of solid baseball this season, however you may not know that by their record. Sporting a 10-13 record after their 4-2 loss to the Dodgers yesterday, the team has exceeded the incredibly low expectations experts and team officials had for them. However that may not be the main point of conversation in the Houston front office. Multiple team sources have reported that the squad is growing impatient with RHP Jordan Lyles. Lyles sported a 5-16 record last season in 178 innings, featuring a 5.14 ERA. Touted as one of the top young arms the team had last season, his struggles really personified the issues of Houston last season. That is, the lack of major league talent the team truly has outside of two or three players.
Rumor has it that the team is looking at the recently signed Jeremy Bonderman to replace Lyles if the youngster can't show something. Bonderman is 67-77 with a 4.89 ERA in his career in 8 major league seasons. Bonderman recently underwent experimental surgery in Germany to rebuild the torn tendons in his pitching elbow. One scout who watched Bonderman's last start is quoted as saying, "He's sitting around 92-95 on the fastball with the same wicked slider that got him to the bigs in the first place. He pitched one of the most dominant starts I've ever seen live." The start he was referring to was the most recent one Bonderman made, in which he struck out 14 RedBirds enroute to a CG 1 hit shutout. Since joining AAA Oklahoma City in the middle of April, Bonderman has pitched well; holding a 2-1 record with a 2.12 ERA and has a ridiculous 15.0 K/9 in 5 starts (10 appearances.)
The overwhelming lack of response to all the questions about Lyles from management is telling. A rival GM had this to say about the situation, "(Lyles) has all the talent in the world, but he just can't put it together. If I had to guess, I'd say Houston gives him two starts...his one in Pittsburgh tomorrow and then his next one, which is scheduled to be against the Cubs. If he doesn't show them enough, I'd say they go to Bonderman."
The team's next game is tomorrow against the Pittsburgh Pirates where the aforementioned Lyles faces Jeff Locke, first pitch at 1:05 local time.
