    ROYALS PHALL TO PHILLIES

Kevin Markham, Rhys Hoskins, and Carlos Santana all hit homeruns as the Phillies pulled away in the later innings in a 9-4 victory. It was actually a tight game through five innings, as the two teams were tied at two after five. Markham and Hoskins led off the sixth with back-to-back solo homeruns, but not before the Royals fought back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. However, that was all she wrote for Kansas City, as the Phillies scored four in the seventh, and one more in the eighth to seal it, led by Santana's moonshot three-run homer in the seventh. Jake Junis didn't factor into the decision, going five and two-third innings while allowing four earned runs, fanning five, and walking just one.

DUFFY DOMINANT; ROYALS SALVAGE FINAL GAME

Danny Duffy scattered four hits over seven and two-third shutout innings as the Royals pulled away late in a 3-0 defeat of the Phillies, stopping a five-game losing skid that has dropped them out of first place in the division. Duffy, now 3-1 in May, fanned nine while walking none in the process. Yoenis Cespedes doubled Nicky Lopez home in the first, and the Royals tacked on a pair in the ninth inning on a double by Adalberto Mondesi, and a single from Nicky Lopez that scored Mondesi from second base. However, Mondesi pulled up lame after rounding third base, favoring his ankle as he crossed the plate without a throw. The Royals overcame a two-out error from Duffy in the eighth; as he spiked a throw into first base on a Carlos Santana third-base side dribbler that ended up being a close play, before Richard Lovelady coaxed a ground ball out of Kevin Markham to end the inning. Corey Knebel struck out the side in the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season in as many tries.

      ROYALS DESIGNATE LIVELY; RE-CALL WHITE
Pillar also returns from rehab assignment; Bishop sent down

      By artoodeetoo
      05/18/2020

Ben Lively's short tenure with the Royals is now over, as the Royals designated the right-hander for assignment after a down performance in an up-and-down season for him. He's only one start removed from a performance where he went eight and two-third innings with just one run allowed; but had only struck out twenty-one hitters in fifty innings, and gave up four homeruns and eight earned runs in Saturday's 14-4 debacle against Philadelphia, his old team.

Mitchell White, who struck out nine over six innings on Saturday for Omaha, was re-called to take his spot on the active roster. White was acquired in late June last year from the Dodgers along with Dennis Santana for Trevor Rosenthal. Santana was not re-signed by the club as he had hit minor league free agency, but White has thrived as the Omaha ace in 2020, going 2-2 with a 3.59 ERA.

White has had control issues in the past, but has only walked twenty-six with ninety-eight strikeouts in 98 2/3 innings between Double and Triple-A the past two seasons since joining the Royals' organization.

In other roster news, shortstop Adalberto Mondesi was placed on the 10-day disabled list with an Achilles strain, while the Royals activated Kevin Pillar from his rehab assignment from Omaha, and sent Blaine Bishop down to take his place. Right-handed pitcher Nick Gardewine was also claimed off waivers from the Rangers, and was assigned to Triple-A Omaha.

Veteran second baseman Jason Kipnis' contract was purchased from Triple-A Omaha, and was promoted to take Mondesi's place on the roster. Mondesi could miss up to three months, according to MLB.com's Evan Smith.

        MLB NEWS AND NOTES
Mondesi, Davis to miss extended periods of time

        By MLB.com Staff
        05/18/2020

ROYALS' MONDESI DIAGNOSED WITH ACHILLES STRAIN; COULD MISS 2-TO-3 MONTHS

Kansas City's hopes of defending their AL Central title took a big hit on Sunday night, as shortstop Adalberto Mondesi was placed on the 10-day disabled list this morning with an Achilles strain in his left heel.

He suffered the injury in the ninth inning of their 3-0 win over Philadelphia, coming up limping about 1/4th of the way to home plate on a single by teammate Nicky Lopez.

While not as serious as complete tears of the tendon, Achilles strains are tiny tears of the tendon that can take months to heal. Manager Ned Yost acknowledged that they could move him to the 60-day disabled list at a later date, but that there were no plans to do so in the future.

The Royals purchased the contract of second baseman Jason Kipnis; adding him to the 40-man roster and replacing Mondesi on the active roster. Kipnis signed a minor league contract with the Royals on April 4th, and has hit .309 with nine homeruns for the Triple-A Storm Chasers.

Yost also added that Lopez, who is not a shortstop by trade, but has played there in the past; will play some shortstop as well as second base, while Jose Peraza will see increased at-bats, especially against left-handed pitchers. --Evan Smith

FORMER ALL-STAR DAVIS' SEASON COMES TO CLOSE

In the midst of a bounce-back year for former All-Star closer Wade Davis, the Colorado right-hander was shut down for the season late last night with a torn flexor tendon in his throwing elbow, suffered during Saturday's matchup with San Diego. Through 12 1/3 innings, Davis had fanned eight with just two walks and nine hits scattered (covering nine appearances).

Davis is scheduled to make $17M in all through 2020, and has an opt-out clause in his contract that he can exercise after this season. He will make $15M next season if he chooses not to opt-out with Colorado. --David LoPietro

        GIANTS, SAMPSON COME TO TERMS

San Francisco, in need of pitching after Erick Fedde was shut down for the season with elbow inflammation, and rookie righty Ben Madison's ineffectiveness, have signed journeyman starter Keyvius Sampson to a one-year, pro-rated contract. He will earn roughly $800K, with incentives that could take that figure up to $1M.

He's expected to make his first big-league appearance since 2016 against Toronto tomorrow night from AT&T Park. He did not record a decision with Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia's Triple-A team, earlier this season; but recorded a save in 10 1/3 innings of work (covering three appearances and one start).

He fanned sixteen with just four walks and seven hits scattered with the IronPigs; and in 2018, he led all of the KBO in strikeouts with 164 in 178 innings of work with the Hanwha Eagles. --Jason Frampton

Kansas City exploded for six runs in the sixth inning against Matt Shoemaker, but the Rangers scored three runs in the first, and two apiece in the second, fourth, and seventh innings to cruise to a 9-6 victory over the Royals. Trevor Oaks allowed seven runs (six earned) over five innings, with ten hits and three strikeouts. In his first game with the Royals, Jason Kipnis singled, hit a two-run homerun as part of the six-run sixth, and stole a base. Cheslor Cuthbert also tied teammate Yoenis Cespedes for the team lead in homeruns with a two-run blast in the sixth, going 1-for-4. Brian Goodwin was 2-for-4, stroking a double and triple.

Jorge Lopez turned his best start of the season, going six and two-third innings, allowing three runs and fanning one in a tidy eighty-two pitches as the Royals tripled up the Rangers by a 9-3 count. He was also the beneficiary of an offense that might finally be awakening from its long slumber, getting four more homeruns to back up his efforts. Yoenis Cespedes led the charge with three hits, including his ninth homerun. Cheslor Cuthbert was 2-for-4 with a homerun, and Brian Goodwin and Nick Castellanos added homeruns. Nicky Lopez and Kevin Pillar also added RBI in the contest. Felix Hernandez went the distance for the Rangers despite giving up all nine runs, helping a tired bullpen recover from a rough previous week. He allowed a baker's dozen hits, and did not strike out a batter with one walk to fall to 1-6.

ROYALS FOLLOW TUESDAY'S SCRIPT; RANGERS PULL AWAY LATE

As with Tuesday's game, the Royals fell behind by a decent margin early, and used a big sixth inning to get back into the game. The result was the same, as well, as Julio Teheran went the distance in the Royals' 6-3 defeat. An RBI double from Peter Alonso, followed by a two-run homerun from Yoenis Cespedes cut the deficit from four to one, but Julio Pablo Martinez stroked a two-run single off one of the best lefty relievers in baseball in Richard Lovelady to push the lead back to three. Josh Staumont came on for the eighth inning; and sandwiched two walks around a fly out before Lovelady appeared, but he couldn't keep them off the board. Martinez was the Rangers' offensive stud, going 2-for-5 with his two-RBI hit in the eighth. Nicky Lopez was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

With little previous indication that any sort of negotiation was going on, the Royals have suddenly announced a six-year extension through 2026 with second baseman Nicky Lopez, as the ultra-popular infielder has now locked in a guaranteed $27.75M over that timeframe. According to MLB.com's Jeffrey Flanagan, who covers the Royals, also in the deal are performance bonuses each year that can add an additional $1M per contract year, so potentially he could earn up to $33.75M maximum.

A fourth-round pick in 2016 out of Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., Lopez did not comment either personally or through his agent, but general manager Travis Greenleaf said that he's "through the roof" to come to a deal with the burgeoning star, and noted that Lopez was excited to be a part of the organization going forward.

He'll more than double the league-minimum salary next season, with his $1.25M hit one of the top pre-arb figures in all of baseball. However, that figure jumps $1.5M over each of the next two seasons, to $2.75M in 2022, and $4.25M in 2023. After a $5.5M salary in 2024, it goes up by $1M in 2025 and 2026, to $6.5M and then $7.5M.

What is most surprising is that he also gave up a year of free agency, as 2026 would have been the first year of his free agency eligibility. To get an idea of how team-friendly this contract is, Fangraphs projected Lopez to make $6.4M in arbiration in 2023, $8.1M in 2024, and $11.6M in 2025, so this is a really, really huge coup for the organization to lock him down at the salary numbers being reported here.

Now, his lack of extra-base power understandably gave the Royals some leverage here. That said, this deal could go from team-friendly to simply highway robbery if Lopez develops any sort of power stroke; given the myriad of other ways he impacts the game, whether in the field or on the basepaths.

And there are already signs that may be happening. He's on pace to more than double his output of doubles from a year ago, and his exit velocity has also jumped an average of three MPH over last season. His BABIP has jumped to .370 from .330 despite a higher rate of balls in play.

After drawing eighty-four walks last year, it's been pretty clear from the outset this season that teams are pitching to him more aggressively, hoping to turn some of those walks into outs. They might want to re-think that strategy if he continues to hit at the current rate he's at. After a remarkable .308/.412/.405 slash last season, he's following that up with an even better .343/.406/.433 so far in 2020.

Going further, his walk rate is way down (8.1% in 2020, 13.9% in 2019), but he's shrunk his already miniscule SO% from 6.8% to 6.6%, and managed to increase his wOBA from .350 to .364, plus improvements in OPS+ (118 to 123), and wRC+ (116 to 131). Simply put, the new approach teams are taking with regards to attacking him aren't working that well.

Lastly -- while it's still unlikely he'll develop any homerun power of note with his wiry frame, it should be said that Whit Merrifield was never thought of as someone that would develop any sort of power, even at his absolute peak. In his final two seasons with the Royals, he hit thirty-nine homeruns before hitting sixteen last year with the Mets.

FIRE SALE BEGINNING ON THE SOUTH SIDE?

The Giants have acquired right-hander Carson Fulmer from the White Sox in exchange for corner infielder Ryder Jones and fireballing rookie righty Ben Madison. Fulmer is 1-0 in three starts so far in 2020, with thirteen strikeouts against two walks since returning from the disabled list.

Despite being eight games back in the NL West, the Giants are more competitive than originally thought, and have suffered some losses in their rotation, namely Erick Fedde. Fedde was put on the 60-day disabled list with elbow issues, sporting a 2.05 ERA through three starts in 2020.

With Yairo Munoz on the disabled list for the White Sox, Jones is a former high draft pick that can play first and third base, and with Jake Burger's struggles in the early going, Jones seems like a natural fit at this point. With Madison, despite his struggles so far, he should be given the time to develop in the South Side's rotation.

The next question obviously is, is Yoan Moncada next? Nick Madrigal is already up and hitting well through his first week, so it seems inevitable that the White Sox are looking for a new home for Moncada. --Evan Smith

BOSTON'S HAPP LEAVES TUESDAY START EARLY

Boston southpaw J.A. Happ left after just two and one-third innings on Tuesday night against the Colorado Rockies, complaining of tightness in his elbow. After some warm-up tosses, they decided to remove him from the game out of an abundance of caution.

An MRI done in Boston on Wednesday revealed some ligament damage, but is going to have a second opinion later today to confirm, and see if any procedure needs to be performed. If there is any additional damage found, the team reportedly is going to shut him down for the remainder of the season, even if surgery is not required.

He'll be thirty-eight next season, but the Red Sox have been interested in signing him to an extension since the beginning of Spring Training. This doesn't automatically take that possibility off the table, but it's hard to see the Red Sox committing even just one or two years for a player that might be coming off major surgery.

Through nine starts, he has a 3-3 record with a 3.00 ERA in fifty-seven innings of work. He has forty-six strikeouts to seventeen walks, but hadn't won a start since a 4-3 win over Tampa Bay on May 2nd. --David LoPietro

GOTT SHELVED FOR TWO TO THREE MONTHS

One of the best young relief pitchers in the National League, Washington's Trevor Gott, is expected to miss up to three months after bone chips were discovered in an MRI performed late last night, after Gott left early in the Nats' 5-2 win over the Mets.

Although not the closer, Gott is 4-for-4 in save opportunities so far, and has a 2.00 ERA in eighteen innings of work. He has fifteen strikeouts to eight walks, with no homeruns allowed. Right-hander David Peterson was re-called from Triple-A Syracuse to take his spot in the bullpen. --Jason Frampton

Corey Knebel blew the first save of his Royals career; as he entered the game with the bases loaded in the eighth and two outs, only to surrender a single to Odubel Herrera turn a 5-4 lead into a 6-5 deficit that ended up being the final score. Kyle Barraclough had a super-easy 9th, throwing three pitches and getting three fly outs to pick up the save. Mitchell White's MLB debut was up-and-down for the Royals, allowing eight hits over six and one-third innings, walking three and striking out five. Cheslor Cuthbert and Peter Alonso each hit homeruns for the Royals, while Kevin Pillar went 2-for-4 with two RBI, driving home the go-ahead runs in the fifth that stood until the eighth.

Facing just two over the minimum thanks to three double plays turned, Danny Duffy allowed scattered four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts as the Royals evened their road series with a 2-0 victory over the Angels. Now 4-1 in May, Duffy lowered his AL-best ERA to 2.16, with four of his eight strikeouts coming in the eighth and ninth innings. Fresh off signing a six-year extension with the club, Nicky Lopez went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and two steals to lead the Royals' offense. Peter Alonso doubled Lopez home in the third, and Lopez also scored on Yoenis Cespedes' single in the eighth against Anthony Swarzak.

Meanwhile, Trevor Oaks was battered for four runs in the early going, thanks to an RBI hit and a two-run homerun in the first, and a sacrifice fly in the second. Oaks allowed five earned runs over his seven innings of work, scattering six hits with two walks and just one strikeout.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE 2020 DRAFT
Royals with 18th pick in first round

                            By artoodeetoo
                            05/25/2020

The draft is less than two weeks away, and various experts that follow the amateur ranks have started trickling out their initial mock drafts. Kansas City, after a few years of picking in the top ten, pick 18th this season, and don't have any compensation picks to speak of.

With the third-rated farm system in baseball coming into the season, the Royals are now in a position where they can take best player available. With so much of their vaunted collegiate pitching class of the last two seasons now pitching in High-A or higher; and with an abundance of high school pitching available in this draft, it stands to reason that they could take a high school pitcher with their first pick.

That said, high school hurlers come with significant risk, especially in the top few rounds. Current Royals starter Jake Junis was a 29th-rounder in 2011. As a counterpoint, southpaw Foster Griffin was taken out of high school by the Royals in the first round in 2014, and has struggled at the Triple-A level this season.

MLB.com, who has several former talent evaluators and GM's on staff, have the Royals going with prepster Victor Medeiros, a starting pitcher from Montclair (NJ) HS, with the 18th pick. Both ESPN's Keith Law and Baseball America's Kendall Rogers have the Royals picking Auburn outfielder Kason Howell at number-eighteen.

Still others have the Royals going elsewhere, with BNN projecting Millbrook (NC) HS catcher Alek Boychuk to the Royals with that pick, which is odd considering they took Oregon State backstop Adley Rutschman seventh overall in 2019. 247sports.com has Kansas City taking Southern Cal two-way player Dustin Judson, who is a fastball-splitter combo relief pitcher, and also doubles as the team's regular catcher.

After spending roughly $8.3M ($8.68M pool) in last year's draft, the Royals will have $7.55M in bonus pool money this year, as a result of their 88-74 AL Central championship season a year ago. With that said, the Royals may choose to spend a little more judiciously.

The draft begins in Secaucus, N.J., at 7 PM Eastern time on Wednesday, June 3rd, with the first round of the draft televised on MLB.com. Rounds two through ten will be streamed online beginning at 4 PM Eastern the following day, and Rounds 11-40 will be streamed on June 5th, also beginning at 4 PM Eastern.

                              SANCHEZ, BRYANT EARN WEEKLY AWARDS

The Yankees' Gary Sanchez and the Cubs' Kris Bryant were named the MLB.com Players of the Week for the week of April 17th through the 23rd.

Bryant hit .440 (11-of-25) during the week, pounding out three homeruns with four RBI as the Cubs continue to extend their division lead over the Pirates and Reds, now at seven and eight-and-one-half games, respectively. --David LoPietro

Sanchez did even better, hitting .571 (12-of-21) with four homeruns and nine RBI. Overall, the Yankees are hovering around the .500 mark for the season, but had a 4-2 week last week, including a sweep of the Orioles in the Bronx.

KERSHAW OUT FOR SEASON; WILL HAVE SURGERY ON ELBOW TOMORROW

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw left after just three innings against Cincinnati on Friday night with elbow tightness, but was listed as day-to-day until today, when he was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a torn UCL in his pitching elbow.

Famed orthopaedic surgeon James Andrews will perform the surgery in Birmingham, Ala., tomorrow.

"We're definitely disappointed in the results of the MRI, but whatever we're feeling as coaches, teammates, and fans pale in comparison to Clayton...guy just wants to compete," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

Veteran right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne was re-called from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace Kershaw on the active roster. He's scheduled to make his first start on the 29th against Pittsburgh on the road. --Evan Smith

COMEBACK EFFORT FALLS SHORT AT ST. LOUIS

Single tallies in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings weren't enough to topple the Cardinals, who held a 4-0 lead heading into the sixth inning, as the Royals fell 4-3 to St. Louis. Patrick Mazeika and Peter Alonso led off the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, with solo homeruns to cut the deficit in half. Pinch-hitting for reliever Drew Smith, Jose Peraza singled with two outs in the eighth to bring Alonso up again, and he delivered a double into the corner that scored Peraza, but Alonso was thrown out at third trying to stretch said double into a triple. Jorge Lopez suffered his first defeat, allowing four earned runs over four and one-third innings with six hits, five walks, and just two strikeouts.

KILLER C'S LEAD ROYALS TO VICTORY

Cheslor Cuthbert and Yoenis Cespedes each collected three hits, and Nick Castellanos hit a solo homerun as the Royals split the series with St. Louis by taking the second game 7-3. Jake Junis was uncharacteristically wild, walking four, but managed to stem the tide after giving up a three-run homerun in the first inning to Harrison Bader, allowing exactly zero runs the rest of his outing. He picked up the victory, his fifth of the season. Brad Hand and Corey Knebel combined to toss two and one-third scoreless innings to close out the game, but Knebel entered the game with a four-run lead, and didn't qualify for the save.
