KLUBER SHUT DOWN AFTER LABRUM DIAGNOSIS, SURGERY
Cleveland is rolling in the AL Central, but suffered a big blow when ace Corey Kluber was diagnosed with a torn labrum after last night's game. Manager Terry Francona started off his post-game press conference with the announcement, and noted he'd be having surgery in Cleveland today.
There was concern after Kluber's fastball, which tops out at 93-94, plummeted to the high 80's after just three innings in his start on Monday night against Oakland. He surrendered back-to-back homeruns to Herschel Powell and Robbie Grossman to lead off the fifth. After a mound visit, he stayed in, but walked the next two hitters before getting two groundballs to end the inning.
"He's a tough hombre, pitching through some pain," said Francona. "But we've decided to shut him down the rest of the season, and is going to have surgery tomorrow back in Cleveland to correct this issue."
Cleveland has a $14M team option on Kluber for 2021, but they are still expected to exercise this option despite their ace missing parts of the last two seasons. He's also just two years removed from a 20-win season, and is a two-time winner of the Cy Young in the AL (2014, 2017). --Jason Frampton
BREWERS' HADER SPINS NO-NO
In his first year as a starter, Josh Hader has had an up-and-down year, but this is certainly his highest point after firing his first career no-hitter against Cincinnati in a 3-0 victory over the Reds.
He faced just two over the minimum, striking out nine with just two walks, throwing a career-high 103 pitches.
"Honestly, I didn't know what the situation was what it was until the seventh inning," said manager Craig Counsell. "I looked up at the scoreboard to see how many hits we had, and I saw that Cincinnati had zero hits." --Evan Smith
