Re: Started From The Bottom | Pittsburgh Pirates 2005 (MVP Baseball 05)

                          June 1, 2005

Goose's note: Sorry for not doing any series updates, I can't find the Word file I had the box scores in. I'll be doing game-by-game updates from now on.

After a phenomenal start to the season, in which Pittsburgh were two games over the .500 mark, injuries and cold streaks have caught up to the Pirates, who now place fifth in the NL Central with a 14–18 record.

General Manager Goose Dennis has tried to stem these losses, making a few minor trades. After slightly mitigating the disaster that was the Aramis Ramirez trade by sending Bobby Hill to Baltimore for starter Eric DuBose, Dennis bolstered the minor leagues by trading Humberto Cota to the Marlins for catching prospect Josh Willingham, Daryle Ward and Willis Roberts to Atlanta for first baseman Andy Bako. Dennis also tried helping the pitching staff, sending minor-league reliever Buddy Groom to Philadelphia for Aaron Fultz, and Mark Redman to Cleveland for Jeff D'Amico.

Shortly after the Pirates acquired D'Amico, it became even more important the team had that depth at pitching. Oliver Perez, the team's ace, broke his arm when a comebacker hit him on the mound. He will, fortunately, be returning to the team in July. To replace the empty spot in the rotation, the Pirates recalled right-hander Ian Snell from AAA Indianapolis. His MLB debut was stellar, going seven and two-thirds scoreless.

At the same time as Pittsburgh's pitching woes, the offense has certainly been less than spectacular as well. Jason Bay, the backbone of the team's offense, has batted just .230 with a wOBA of only .302 and a wRC+ of 81 (weighted to real life 2005). Perhaps the only bright side in this offense is Craig Wilson, who has set the record for most home runs by a Pirate before June 1.

In the minor leagues, catcher Brent Erickson continues to impress, batting .322 with thee home runs in 87 at bats. Top prospect Zach Duke has been unimpressive, throwing a 4.19 ERA with the AAA Indians, but catching prospect Neil Walker has been solid with the AA Curve, batting .291 with a pair of dingers.

                          Around the League

Tampa Bay (22–31) and Toronto (25–27) have witnessed the only two season-ending injuries this season, to shortstop B. J. Upton and 2B Tim Murphy, who are out with a torn meniscus and a torn shoulder muscle, respectively.

Todd Helton has continued his absurd pace from last season, thus far hitting .387/.481/.693 with 15 homers, leading the league in batting average, total bases and hits, while ranking second in on-base and slugging percentages.

Unsurprisingly, Barry Bonds continues to dominate NL pitchers, crushing 17 balls over the wall while batting .351/.500/.720 and leading the MLB with 53 RBI.

                          Here are today's standings:
                          Spoiler

The Pirate's offensive struggles are evident even when only viewing their statistics. They have just three starters whose wRC+ is average or above.

And while their pitching has been great, it appears to be on the brink of collapse, being propped up only by low walk numbers.

                          *On the DL

Their bullpen, however, has been phenomenal.
