Pirates Recall Erickson & Posada; Option Brassard & House

The Pirates today optioned CF Steve Brassard to AAA Indianapolis. In 84 games this season, Brassard has batted .224/.322/.360 with 8 home runs and 35 RBI. In his stead, the Bucs recalled CF Corey Posada. Posada has been stellar in the minors since his recent demotion, batting .381/.470/.508 in 71 ABs. He was less than excellent in an earlier trip to the majors this year, hitting just .206/.217/.286 with two homers in 37 games.

The backup catcher position is now more open than it has been in the past, as the Bucs optioned C J.R. House to Altoona and recalled C Brent Erickson. House only had a few games under his belt, but something made the general manager send him down after hitting just .216/.237/.216 in 37 AB. Erickson batted .328/.436/.488 in 162 AAA at-bats, though he hit just .176 in an earlier major-league appearance.

                      Bucs, Giants Swap Outfielders

PITTSBURGH – In a surprise move Thursday night following a game against the Florida Marlins, the Pirates traded right fielder Matt Lawton to the San Francisco Giants, receiving left fielder Matt Stairs in return.

The 33-year-old Lawton has batted .243 this year for the Bucs, but has remained a threat on the basepaths even after moving to the bench. In 73 games, Lawton stole 23 bases. Due to his status on the bench, Lawton requested a trade from Pittsburgh.

"He was a great guy to have in the clubhouse, but he wanted to move somewhere he can have more of an impact," Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon said.

This move certainly made the Pirates older –and slower – as Stairs is 37 years old. But, in 349 at-bats with the Kansas City Royals and the Giants this season, Stairs has played as if he's 10 years younger, batting .309/.413/.493, with 15 round-trippers. Stairs was traded just two days ago from the Royals, in exchange for catcher Yorvit Torrealba, and made his way to the Giants' trade block quickly.

A late mistake by Willis Roberts — intentionally walking Matt Stairs to get to Craig Wilson — put the final nail in the Braves' coffin as the Bucs took the game, 7–1.

For the second game in a row, the Braves made a critical error: walking the batter ahead of Craig Wilson, who immediately followed that up with a grand slam.

Unfortunately, Matt Stairs suffered an injury in the game. Diagnosis will follow.

                              Stairs Out for Season

ATLANTA — It didn't take long for the team doctor to rule out Matt Stairs for the remainder of the 2005 season with a separated shoulder.

The injury apparently came in yesterday's game when Stairs slid hard into second base to break up a double play. He failed.

He's estimated to be out for at least 60 days, and will be placed on the 60-day DL.

To fill his spot in the outfield, the Pirates have recalled right fielder Jose Bautista from AAA Indianapolis. Bautista has hit .247/.327/.371 in 324 at-bats at that level this season, with seven home runs and 25 RBI. Whether Bautista will start games in the outfield remains to be seen.

Helping bolster the bench with the loss of a starter will be 3B Kevin Youkilis, making his second stint with the MLB Pirates. Despite a lame showing earlier this season, Youkilis has hit .346/.422/.510 in 219 at-bats since he was optioned to the minors.

Making room on the major-league roster in a corresponding move is the optioning of pitcher Kip Wells. The righty began the year in the rotation, but was sent over to the bullpen after the strong showing of Ian Snell. He has only seen limited usage in the bullpen, but will likely see much more time in the triple-A rotation.
