Re: Started From The Bottom | Pittsburgh Pirates 2005 (MVP Baseball 05)

July 1 Update: Around the MLB

          Standings:
          National League

Perhaps there is no surprise here with the NL standings beyond the NL Central. In the West, the Giants are threatening the Dodgers with their star-studded lineup that includes superstar Barry Bonds. In the East, the Mets are running away with the division. But in the Central, the Pittsburgh Pirates have shocked the league. After winning 72 games in 2004, the Bucs are above .500 heading into July for the first time in what feels like forever. Will this be the year the curse of Bonds is lifted, or will the Bucs' pitching staff regress to the mean? Who knows. But regardless of the final outcome, one thing is certain: it will be a fun stretch to watch.

          American League

While the race was close heading into June, the Yankees seem to be carrying the AL East with them, already four and a half atop their closest competitors. Throughout the junior circuit, there are few surprises. The A's have a healthy lead in the West, the White Sox are hanging on to first in the Central, and the East is staggered into three tiers.

          League Leaders

Again, few surprises here. Todd Helton is destroying the league, but Craig Wilson shockingly leads the MLB in home runs by two. Will he continue his torrid pace, or will Barry Bonds come back from the dead and take everything by storm?

Also, it seems as though the Big Unit is going to demolish an already absurd record.

            Pirates MLB Update

While General Manager Goose Dennis has made moves to shore up the Pirates' offense, it seems the acquisitions have underproduced. The only bright spot has been Andy Bako, but as long as he plays second fiddle to Craig Wilson it will be just that: a spot.

On the mound, the Bucs' starters continue to remain solid, at least on paper. But, the more you delve into it, a regression to the mean should be in short order. Unless this whole season is a fluke.

The bullpen, on the other hand, has at least come down to earth.

              Pirates: The Minors

              AAA Indianapolis Indians

Neil Walker has been stellar in his few appearances since being promoted from AA Altoona, but the Bucs hope to see some improvements in his game before he's made the full-time AAA catcher, let alone any MLB time. Freddy Sanchez has dipped, while Josh Willingham continues to disappoint.

On the rubber, Zach Duke continues to be a promising prospect, tossing for a 3.77 ERA in his first nine AAA starts. Todd Ritchie and Ryan Vogelsong tell stories that GM Dennis has made a couple of smart moves in his career. Meanwhile, the bullpen is absolutely dominant.

              AA Altoona Curve

Not really a lot going on here. Chris Arroyo should be better, but he isn't.

              A Lynchburg Hillcats

Yup, this is A-ball. Some insane strikeout numbers, but, again, its A-ball.
