Tsutsugo Goes Deep Three Times As Rays Win Extra Innings Thriller

Yo****omo Tsutsugo homered three times, including a walk-off two-run blast to give the Tampa Bay Rays a 6-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in a 14 inning thriller that saw five runs score in extra innings.

Chase Anderson turned in another solid start for the Blue Jays, who saw their brief three game win streak snapped. Anderson allowed just three hits over 6 1/3 innings of work, but was matched pitch-for-pitch by Rays starter Tyler Glasnow who turned in a spectacular five innings of work. Randal Grichuk and Danny Jansen both went deep for the Blue Jays in the loss, with Grichuk picking up his first home run of the year and Jansen going yard for the third time in two games.

Aside from Tsutsugo's four RBI performance at the plate, the Rays got runs from Brandon Lowe and Austin Meadows. Lowe launched a game-timing solo shot in the tenth inning off Jays reliever Justin Miller while Meadows gave Tampa Bay a short-lived lead in the sixth with a sacrifice fly.

The Blue Jays and Rays continue their three game series tomorrow night at Tropicana Field.

Rays Launch Four Homers In Win Over Jays

As if launching three home runs in last night's 14 inning affair wasn't enough, Rays slugger Yo****omo Tsutsugo smacked another two home runs on Saturday as the Rays snuck past the Blue Jays 4-3.

Hyun-Jin Ryu got the start for the Blue Jays and was looking dominant until he was forced to leave the game in the third inning with what the team is describing as "elbow tightness". Fellow southpaw Thomas Pannone entered the game and was promptly greeted by back-to-back home runs from Tsutsugo and Hunter Renfroe. When it was all said and done, the Rays would total four home runs off Pannone, including another solo shot from Tsutsugo to go along with a blast off the bat of Austin Meadows.

The Blue Jays got on the board first when Bo Bichette hit his first home run of the season off Rays starter Blake Snell to lead off the ballgame. The Blue Jays' medical staff further clarified Ryu's injury situation, stating that the team is monitoring it closely but that Ryu was removed from the game for "precautionary reasons" and is expected to make his next scheduled start.

The Blue Jays look to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon as the Rays and Jays wrap up their three game series.

Blue Jays Spoil Rays Comeback With Four-Run Ninth

When Willy Adames went deep off Jays reliever Tim Mayza in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at three runs each, it seemed like deja vu for the Blue Jays, who saw the Rays launch comeback wins in both of the first two games of their three game series.

Travis Shaw flipped the script for the Blue Jays, taking back the lead in the top of the ninth inning with a blast off Rays reliever Brendan McKay before Cavan Biggio would add some important insurance runs with a three-run shot off Diego Castillo, his second home run of the game.

When it was all said and done, the Blue Jays managed to survive another comeback scare and salvage the final game of their three game series against the Rays. The Blue Jays get a much needed day off on Monday before they head to Fenway Park to take on the Boston Red Sox for a three game series that kicks off on Tuesday evening.

The Toronto Blue Jays continue their AL East road trip as they head to Boston to take on the Boston Red Sox. Danny Jansen has been swinging a hot bat for the Blue Jays, homering four times in his last three games. The Blue Jays will need their bullpen to perform better than they did in their series against the Rays, as the Red Sox posses a much more potent lineup. Luckily for the Blue Jays, the Red Sox lineup features less left-handed hitters, setting up for a better matchup. Unfortunately for the Jays, they will be forced to face Red Sox ace Chris Sale in the middle game of the three game series. Sale has been off a red-hot start to the new season, going 5-0 with a 2.86 ERA.

Shoemaker Twirls Complete Game As Jays Rout Red Sox

Matt Shoemaker took some pressure off a Blue Jays bullpen that got roughed up this past weekend with a complete game, three-hit performance against the Boston Red Sox. Shoemaker went the distance for the first time this season, surrendering two runs while striking out five en route to his third win of the season.

Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi didn't have the same luck, as the Blue Jays chased the hard throwing righty from the ballgame before the end of the third inning. Eovaldi would be charged with six runs on eight hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work, raising his season ERA to a concerning 10.42.

Catcher Danny Jansen continued swinging a hot bat at the plate for the Blue Jays, swatting his fourth home run of the season while driving in five runs. Jansen's impressive 3-for-4 performance at the plate raised his batting average to a team-high .386.

The Blue Jays will look to keep the bats going tomorrow night as they face Red Sox ace Chris Sale in the middle game of the three game set.

Blue Jays Chase Sale Early, Pick Up Third Straight Win

For the second night in a row, the Toronto Blue Jays chased a Boston Red Sox starting pitcher from the ballgame in the early innings. Last night it was Nathan Eovaldi, but this night Chris Sale was the victim of an early ambush by the Blue Jays' offence. Sale would fail to make it out of the second inning, surrendering five runs on seven hits capped off by a two-run triple off the bat of Lourdes Gurriel Jr..

Bo Bichette led the offence for the Blue Jays, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and one RBI. Jays starter Trent Thornton rebounded from a tough outing last time, surrendering four runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. Thornton flashed his swing-and-miss stuff all night long, picking up nine strikeouts.

The Red Sox try to avoid their first sweep of the season tomorrow night as they send Collin McHugh to the mound in an attempt to slow down a red-hot Blue Jays lineup.

Grichuk's Two Homers Help Jays Sweep Red Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays completed a sweep of the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night at Fenway Park with a narrow 4-3 victory on the road. Randal Grichuk broke out of his slump at the plate by launching two home runs to help the Jays squeeze past the Red Sox.

Alex Verdugo launched a three-run blast in the fourth inning. The home run would represent the only runs that the Red Sox would be able to score as Blue Jays starter Chase Anderson would settle down and go 5 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts. Grichuk would smack a solo homer in the fifth inning to tie the ballgame at 3-3, and added his second solo homer of the game in the top of the ninth inning to give the Jays a one-run lead.

The Blue Jays worked Red Sox starter Collin McHugh hard to begin the ballgame, leading to the veteran righty getting the hook after just three innings. McHugh needed 96 pitches to get through his three innings of work, but was able to hold the Blue Jays to just two runs at the time. The Blue Jays showed excellent patience at the plate all night long, racking up eight free passes - Lourdes Gurriel Jr. three walks while Travis Shaw picked up another four.

The win gives the Blue Jays possession of first place in the American League East, with a 0.5 game lead following the New York Yankees' 9-3 loss against the Detroit Tigers. The Blue Jays look to keep things rolling as they continue their road trip tomorrow night in Baltimore as they take on the AL East-worst Baltimore Orioles.

The Toronto Blue Jays roll into town to take on the American League East-worst Baltimore Orioles in a three game weekend set. The Blue Jays are winners of their last four, and are fresh off an impressive sweep of the Boston Red Sox. That doesn't bode well for the Orioles, who have struggled to get on base all season long. The Orioles' pitching hasn't done them any favours, with the pitching staff posting a combined ERA of 5.37.

Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen comes into the series swinging one of the hottest bats in the game, pushing his season batting average to .379 with a power surge (5 home runs). The Blue Jays look to take advantage of a good matchup as they try to hold their spot atop the AL East standings.

Ryu Exits Early As Jays Pick Up Costly Victory Over Orioles

The Toronto Blue Jays picked up their fifth straight win with a narrow 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night, but it came at a cost. Blue Jays starter Hyun-Jin Ryu left the game in the second inning after experiencing discomfort in the elbow area. Ryu exited his previous start against the Tampa Bay Rays with elbow tightness. The early exit of the Blue Jays ace is alarming to say the least, but put pressure on the Blue Jays bullpen.

Thomas Pannone answered the call for Charlie Montoyo, turning in 6 1/3 stellar innings of work out of the bullpen following Ryu's early exit. Pannone, who was credited with a no-decision, allowed just one unearned run on two hits with six strikeouts. The Orioles scored their only run of the game off Pannone in the seventh inning when Derek Fisher misplayed a Trey Mancini fly ball in left field. Mancini would end up on third, and would eventually score on a Renato Nunez sac fly.

The Blue Jays would take a one-run lead in the top of the ninth inning on a Randal Grichuk RBI single to set the table for closer Ken Giles to pick up his eighth save of the season. The Blue Jays' only other run in the ballgame came way back in the second inning when Rowdy Tellez went deep for his fourth homer of the season.

The Blue Jays continue their series tomorrow afternoon against the Orioles as they shoot for their sixth straight victory.

Blue Jays Place Ryu On 15-Day Injured List

In some unfortunate news, the Toronto Blue Jays announced that they have placed ace Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 15-day injured list. Ryu left his start during last night's game against the Baltimore Orioles after just 1 1/3 innings of work with elbow discomfort. Ryu, who has been battling elbow discomfort for a majority of the season, has now officially been diagnosed with a sprained elbow ligament. That's obviously reason for concern for the Blue Jays, who are expected to take a slow and precautionary approach to Ryu's recovery.

The Blue Jays announced that they have purchased the contract of and recalled left handed reliever Marc Rzepczynski from Triple-A Buffalo. With fellow left handed reliever Thomas Pannone pitching 6 1/3 innings in last night's win over the Orioles, Rzepczynski can be expected to eat some of the lefthanded Pannone's innings while he rests up.

To make room for Rzepczynski on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays announced that they have placed infielder Santiago Espinal on outright waivers. Espinal had been playing at the Double-A level with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Orioles Snap Blue Jays' Five Game Win Streak

The Baltimore Orioles snapped their four game losing streak at the expense of the Toronto Blue Jays' five game win streak on Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 victory at Camden Yards.

After a low scoring affair last night, Saturday's ballgame started with a bang. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Trey Mancini traded three-run home runs in the first inning, and the game stayed tied at 3-3 until the fifth inning when a Dwight Smith Jr. sac fly scored Jose Iglesias to give the Orioles a one-run lead that they would hold on to.

Orioles starter John Means lowered his season ERA to 2.48 with four innings of six strikeout work, with his only mistake being the first inning three-run blast he gave up to Guerrero Jr. The same couldn't be said for Jays starter Tanner Roark who continued to struggle, dropping his third decision of the season while surrendering five runs and watching his ERA rise to 4.36.

The Blue Jays wrap up their nine game road trip tomorrow with an afternoon rubber match against the Orioles as they look to head back to Toronto on a positive note.

Blue Jays Wrap Up Road Trip With Comeback Win

The Toronto Blue Jays waited until the eighth inning to get the bats going against the Baltimore Orioles as they torched the Orioles' bullpen for a three-run eighth inning that completed a Sunday afternoon comeback victory. The 4-3 victory marked the end of a long nine game road trip for the Blue Jays, as they get ready to return to Toronto for the first time in over a week.

The Orioles got to Blue Jays starter Matt Shoemaker early in the ballgame, scoring three runs in the first two innings thanks to a pair of doubles from Hanser Alberto and Chance Sisco, but couldn't hold on to a 3-0 lead.

Derek Fisher kickstarted the Blue Jays comeback with a solo blast in the fifth inning, his first home run of the season. Another solo homer from Travis Shaw would bring the Jays to within one run in the eighth before catcher Danny Jansen crushed a 460-foot moonshot with a runner on to give the Blue Jays their first and only lead of the day. Ken Giles would come in and shut the door for his ninth save of the season.

The Blue Jays return home after going 6-3 over their nine game road trip. They'll face a familiar foe tomorrow night in Toronto, as the Boston Red Sox roll into town looking to avenge the sweep that they suffered at the hands of the Blue Jays earlier this week.

                            Game Notes
The Toronto Blue Jays return home to take on the Boston Red Sox after a successful nine game AL East road trip. They'll be in for a tough task right off the bat, matching up against Chris Sale in the series opener. The Blue Jays were able to get to Sale early the last time they faced the lanky lefty, forcing Sale to his first loss of the season.

Danny Jansen continues to swing a red hot bat for the Blue Jays, who sit two games ahead of the Red Sox in the AL East standings after their 6-3 road trip. Both the Red Sox and Blue Jays enter the series chasing the New York Yankees in the early season standings.

The Blue Jays have yet to announce their starter for the third and final game of the series. With the injury to Hyun-Jin Ryu, it is likely that a roster move will be made by the club prior to Wednesday.

Thornton Dominates Red Sox, Blue Jays Take Down Red Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays announced their return to Toronto with a bang with a decisive 8-2 victory over their American League East rival Boston Red Sox.

Trent Thornton turned in his best start of the year thus far, tossing 7 1/3 innings of three-hit ball, allowing his lone earned run on an Andrew Benintendi solo homer in the eighth inning that chased the sophomore starter from the ballgame at 97 pitches.

The Blue Jays got to Boston starter Chris Sale for eighth hits and four runs over five innings, with shortstop Bo Bichette driving in three of the Blue Jays' eight runs on the evening. Teoscar Hernandez added a solo homer in the eighth inning, his sixth long ball of the season. Hernandez scored three runs in the win.

The Blue Jays got a scare in the third inning when Lourdes Gurriel Jr. left the game after an awkward slide at second base while attempting to break up a double play. The Blue Jays announced that Gurriel Jr. suffered a knee sprain but is expected to avoid a trip to the injured list and is currently day-to-day.

Red Sox Smack Four Homers In Win Over Blue Jays

The Boston Red Sox swatted four long balls in a 5-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night. Rafael Devers and Mitch Moreland both homered in the win as the Red Sox improved their record to 18-14 as they continue to trail the Blue Jays and sit in third place in the American League East standings.

Michael Chavis and Christian Vazquez both added solo homers, with the two going back-to-back in the seventh inning to chase Blue Jays starter Chase Anderson from the ballgame.

The Blue Jays worked the Red Sox pitching staff hard all night long, earning eight free passes but were unable to get the big hit that they were searching for, going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Cavan Biggio was the lone bright spot on the offensive side of the ball for the Jays, going deep for his fourth homer of the season - a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth inning.

After the game, the Blue Jays announced that they have optioned reliever Marc Rzepczysnki to Triple-A Buffalo and recalled starter Ryan Borucki. Borucki is expected to start tomorrow against the Red Sox in place for the injured Hyun-Jin Ryu.
