Atlanta gets huge 4th quarter to beat Eastern Conference Champs

    (0-0) AT (0-0)

This game saw one of Chicagos worst shooting performances in history, shooting .300 from the field. Chicago was in good position to strike in the fourth quarter, but continous Missed shots for the for the Blackout not only hindered their offense but helped the half court game of Atlanta get in a rhythem. Samuel Dalembert was great in his ABF debut, corralling 15 rebounds (5 offensive) and scoring a game high 24 points.
"We played great defense tonight, and our big boys played great on the inside" said Atlanta coach Jeff Poole. Rookie Trey Gooden from Buffalo scored 19 points and grabbed 14 boards (all defensive) and blocked 4 shots. On the other side Derek Wombi played well scoring 19 points and getting 7 rebounds in 17 minutes, while starting SF Vladimir Radmanovic played 29 minutes, scoring 10 points and shooting 3/15.

NOTE: The stat column marked "Fastbreak Points" will from now on refer to "Team Fouls Committed"

      Trey Gooden, The Future?
      By Contributer Mark Saxson

      After One Game
I have to say, Trey Gooden impresses me. Atlanta was a weak team inside the paint last season, and thats what kept them from winning pivotal games. No team can win without an inside presence. When the guards and wings have to carry the team, those players get tired, and when those players get tired, the speed of the team is crippled. Last season we saw an Atlanta team that lost a lot of close games, often because of fatigue late in those contests. Darius Miles was often drained from guarding the 4 spot, Speedy Claxton and whatever Shooting guard was playing (there were many) were often running themselves to death in hopes of using the fastbreak to keep from exposing their weak halfcourt game.

Tonight, the Animals were a whole new team, and instead of losing a close game in the fourth due to fatigue, they outscored Chicago by 20 points and outlasted and outpowered their opponent. All thanks to that inside game.

Trey Gooden held Joe Smith down like a dog, and rebounded anything that came his way on defense. On the other end, he scored on the inside, he scored on the fastbreak, hell he even hit a pair of treys. With the pressure taken off of Darius Miles, the once project player scored 17 points, 13 of which came in the fourth. With two players dominating the inside (Gooden and Dalembert) the animals successfully picked apart the Blackout defense and made a statement to begin the season.

      Why the future?
I wouldn't go out and call any player the future after one game, but Gooden showed something I havn't seen from a whole lot of guys lately.
He likes to play defense just as much as he likes to score. Not many guys can go out there and haul down 14 defensive rebounds (the Blackouts poor shooting helped) but this kid went out there and did it in his debut. But thats not what really impressed me. I have never seen Dikembe Mutombo slammed. Sure I saw Dennis Rodman swat him back in the 90's in Mutombos glory days. But Gooden, at 6'10", took off from standing and blocked the 7'2" center. Now usually when someone gets infront of Mutombo they get 300 pounds crashing down on them. But instead of bodying up to mutombo, Gooden finnessed his way straight to the ball and came up with an embarressing defensive posterization.

Trey Gooden may have been trying to show is skills as a lowely rookie, but let me tell you, if he plays defense like that, day in and day out, he could be one of the best and most well balanced power forwards I've ever seen.

      Balance on Offense
Trey Gooden got a pass, and without hesitation popped a wide open three. He airballed. Two possesions later, he took a contested shot from the same spot. He drained it. This guy is a defiant player. A sharp pivot step, then a jam over the head of Chicago PF Joe Smith (The old one, not the young one). A tough foul on the inside. Two foul shots swishing through. Lets face it Atlanta, you gotta be excited about this guy. Whats even more exciting is that Atlanta has him wrapped up for 6 years, at a mere $4.5 Million dollars. Now, given thats a lot of cash in the ABF, but if he develops into an MVP Caliber player over the next couple of years, Atlanta could be looking at a serious bargain, or a serious holdout. Either way, they have a very sharp looking prospect locked up for 6 years.

yeah, I mean i expected him to do well, but he was a rebounding beast, and his speed helped a lot, he was a beast in transition.

Washington handles bussiness with big fourth quarter.

              (0-0) AT (0-0)

Well it was no surprise when one of the east's best teams took the new Los Angeles Buffalo on a trip in the fourth quarter, though we will give props to LA for outscoring Washington through the first three quarters. LA busted out to an early lead and lead 27-18 after one quarter, but some good play from point guard Brevin Knight brought Washington back into reach of the lead with the score at 48-46 at the half. The third quarter was undoubtably the most uneventful, with Washington pulling with in a point of the lead at 69-68. The fourth quarter is where the action happened, as Washington spurned LA with a 9-1 and a 13-4 run that pretty much took the energy out of the Buffalo. LA shot poor down the stretch, and a majority of Washingtons 10 offensive boards came early in the fourth. Will Conroy did a little bit of everything tonight, despite shooting 2/11 from downtown. Brevin Knight added 18 points tonight, and rookie Jameel Chadwick scored 14 points, including 8/10 from the free throw line. Nick Young scored just 14 points on 5/16 shooting and 1/7 from longrange. Los Angeles was pushed by four players who scored double digits (Travis Outlaw 18, Devin Brown 14, Fred Jones 15, Dee Brown 10) and were lifted by PJ Browns 19 rebounds, 16 on defense.

alright guys cool. Toronto should have a pretty good year, they had best record in the east last year. As for chicago, they were the #4 seed last year and they play in a tough division, but hey, they werent the eastern conf. champs for nothin.

What else can I say. Cleveland Looked like a frieght train and Minnesota looked like a girl tied to the railroad tracks. Cleveland shot .540 and 17/34 from three point range to put a butt whooping on one of the leagues newest teams, as the Lightning rolled to a 116-75 victory.

"We really executed out there tonight, everything went well" Said PF Sean Williams who recorded a 20 pt, 7 reb, 5 ast statline. Minnesota struggled to find offensive rhyme throughout the game, scoring just 29 first half points. The team as whole shot just .280 from the field, and shot a paltry 4/24 from deep range. Matt Barnes , Minnesotas marqee player scored just 12 points, 10 of which came in the first half, he shot 5/27. Sadly he was his teams leading scorer.

Both teams shot horrible from the line, Minnesota converting 15 of 29 and Cleveland just 11 of 21. Daniel Gibson who was injured but playable, left the game in the third with a hand injury, how serious is yet to be seen. This is pivitol considering Cleveland is already without Eric Snow for 5 weeks due to a broken finger.

Cleveland dominating Minnesota wasn't a huge surprise, but Memphis' huge fail against Phoenix wasn't expected. The defending champs started the season out with a bang, blowing out Memphis 117-79. Memphis really didn't play a bad game they shot a semi-good .390 from the field, turned the ball over a little more than they should have, and struggled from the three point line, but it wasn't a horrible game. It was Phoenix's strong offensive play and good rebounding that won this one.

Phoenix shot .510 from the field, missed just one of their 13 free throws, and hit 13 of 28 threes. They also won the rebound battle 48-33. Alando Tucker took right back to defending his MVP status by scoring 30 points, and adding 8 boards. Robert Horry added 17 points and 11 rebounds, and in all six phoenix players scored in double digits. Demarr Johnson and rookie Jason Smith both scored 14 points off the bench. Kurt Thomas picked right back up as one of the leagues best rebounders grabbing 13, 3 offensive. On the other side, Anthony Frey looked good in his rookie debut scoring 19 points in 31 minutes before leaving with an injury. Milicic and Redick each added 13 points from the bench.
