Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)

    _____
It's Guy West's Third Year: Fortune or Fallout?

Normally it is considered a compliment to be compared to Larry Brown -- but the comparison makes fans in Manhattan, KS excited and queasy. The legendary College and NBA coach was known as a master recruiter, nurturer, and tactician. Brown constantly found ways to make this teams greater than the sum of his parts.

The comparison fits Guy West well. Although West was not involved in basketball at all when he joined Norfolk State -- allegedly to keep the seat warm for another coach -- he learned on the job quickly and brought in quality talent. He had a strong piece in Kyle O'Quinn and guided the school to their first two NCAA berths. At Drexel, West inherited a team with some great role players and one superstar: Femi Ramsey. He turned a hard-luck mid major into a National Champion and helped Ramsey unearth all of his potential.

Of course, that is the rosy side of the Larry Brown comparison. Those familiar with Brown know that he has a tendency to butt heads with players and personnel, a desire to have his own people in place, and a wanderlust where he constantly had eyes other coaching positions. There is a reason Brown took so many teams to the Tournament or Playoffs -- he was constantly switching teams.

See why fans in Manhattan, KS may think the comparison hits a little too close to home?

Granted, circumstances are different with the Wildcats than other teams. West just signed an extension, so maybe he isn't leaving straight away. But the signs are all there. The "my way or the highway" approach to coaching, while very successful on the court, has created tension that has followed West throughout his career. He has had players transfer out of his program or go behind his back and try and get him forcibly removed. He has a tendency to alienate those who are not on board with his program. No one can question his ability to build a team -- both Drexel and Norfolk State have been incredibly successful years after West's departure. But is there a cost for collecting so much talent?

Arguably, yes. Look at West's performance at Norfolk State his third year: in the first year the team was predominantly West's players, the Spartans failed to make the NCAA Tournament and were knocked out of the NIT in the first round. And how about his final year at Drexel, where Ramsey returned for his senior year and West had finally brought in his own players to surround the NBA ready center? Not only were the Dragons knocked out of the CAA Tournament, but they collapsed in the NCAA Tournament due to lack of focus and free throw shooting when they had the talent to make it to the Final Four.

West's teams seem to peak in their second year, and then the distractions start. At Norfolk State & Drexel, there was always the prospect of West bolting to another team. And when locker room problems emerged, it seemed like West was more apt to try and let players police themselves while he looked for a way out.

Which, in a way, brings West's tenure full circle to Larry Brown. There is no question that if West's career continues to be so enchanted that he has the potential to be an all-time great coach. But after so many years of strong recruiting at Kansas State, will he finally be able to take a team of his players to the next level? Or will they flame out and under-perform like West's other squads have in similar circumstances? And what if the Wildcats succeed? West said the reason he came to Kansas State was for the challenge. Will the tug of other "challenges" cause him to leave the bench in Manhattan?

There's a lot to feel good about at Kansas State entering the season. There are lots of talented new faces to match up with West's returning young studs. But fans in Manhattan may want to carpe diem and hold on tight to to the present. If past is prologue, and sometimes that is exactly what it is, the good times might already be over with an NIT Championship. And if they aren't and Kansas State reaches new heights this year? Then how long before West gets the itch and starts eying another team?

There are clouds on the horizon -- are they storm clouds, or the soft covering of a valley full of promise? With West, the answer is probably both.

      2018-2019 Preseason Top 25

There is no need to blink as the Big East comes out swinging. The power conference netted the top 3 spots in the poll: Villanova, West Virginia, and Louisville. However, this could be the year where the Atlantic 10 goes from being a "good" conference to a "power" conference. It placed two teams in the Top ten, Charlotte and Temple. Don't think the conference is top heavy either -- teams like Richmond and La Salle could crack the Top 25 before the year is over.

Some may call it silly to rank players before they hit the hard wood, but the ten players below can be considered the movers and shakers of college basketball. In a sport where individual performances are so important, these student athletes could be the difference between an outstanding tournament run and a lost season.

Surprised to see you unranked and Utah State ranked. Something is brewing for the Aggies it seems. That's an insane schedule. Could be tough to crack .500 with that schedule, even with a team of your caliber.
Well, I've seen that the game kind of fudges about how it does preseason rankings. It does take past performance into account -- which is kind of realistic. Some teams are over ranked. Some under. If it just went by Overall then Drexel would be in the Top 10 (90 OVR).

And yeah, Maryland is very interesting to me because they have a bunch of new bodies and two preseason all Americans. Sometimes I dream about what it would be like to have 9 scholarships to throw out all at once.

Yeah they've been consistently ranked the last two or three seasons. They've kind of taken control of the WCC.

          Got to Start Somewhere

          vs.

If the match-up was between cats, the mascots were really the only similarity. Bethune-Cookman was outclassed from the start in Memphis, and Kansas State advances in the winners bracket of the first phase of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Roger Guzman & DaMarcus Ross host the KSU Block Party in Memphis

Coach West's starters shredded their MEAC opponent to the point where they got to spend the majority of the game on the bench. Esteban Kummer exploded off the bench with 5 three pointers, and Kansas State was able to outrun Bethune-Cookman on the break again and again and again.

          No contest.

                  Blowout by Attrition

                  vs.

The Wildcats punched their ticket to MSG for the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic by a comfortable final score of 87-73. But the way the game got to that final margin is anything but comfortable and should serve as a reminder that the Wildcats, while talented, are still young.

Dayton didn't back down from the Wildcats, that's for sure

Kansas State had the correct game plan to attack the Dayton Flyers in their winner's bracket match up in Memphis. Their high pressure defense caused a number of bad passes and turnovers, and soon the Wildcats were able to run right by Dayton. When the game went to half court, the Flyer's interior defenders were more than able to hold their own against their Big 12 foes, but West's squad was able to work the perimeter and transition game to create a lead as large as 25 and put the Wildcats in comfortable position.

Clarence Weaver attacks the basket and beats the defense

One notable performer for the Wildcats was Clarence Weaver, who was happy to return to his hometown after transferring from Memphis. Weaver put on a show, constantly using his superior size and athleticism to attack the basket and out muscle smaller defenders. Although Weaver has not worked his way into the starting line-up, his performance could be a real eye opener for Coach West.

Of course, any accolades for Kansas State come with a huge asterisk in this win. For awhile it looked like the game was comfortably in control, and then the Wildcats shut things down and cleared their bench. Dayton took advantage of the opportunity and began to push the tempo and attack the baseline. For a moment, momentum seemed to flicker with the Flyers. Signs of life started to emerge from the crowd.

And then the threes started falling, and suddenly KSU's insurmountable lead was reduced to 11 with 4 minutes to play.

In order to stop the bleeding, West put his starters back on the floor. The goal was to bleed the clock as much as possible and find a good shot. Although Dayton pushed and continued to be hot from beyond the arc, it was the steadying presence of Junior College transfer Barney Conroy who helped save the game for the Wildcats. Conroy effectively managed the clock and hit two big three pointers in the closing minutes. No matter how hard Dayton pushed, Conroy had an answer. As a result, the Wildcats will be going to New York City next week to take on a familiar foe: the Baylor Bears.

Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)

                      Tougher Road Ahead
                      vs.

On paper, this game was not a contest. On the court, it was even less so. While Western Kentucky is a quality mid-major that could make it to the big dance as an at large, they were no match for the Kansas State Wildcats. Once again, Coach West's run, gun, and shoot attack overwhelmed an inferior opponent as the Wildcats improve to 3-0 by a final score of 79-45.

DaMarcus Ross goes for the short jumper and pays the price

The Hilltoppers gave an admirable effort all game, and Coach West left impressed with WKU's unwillingness to back down. Despite Branduinn Gatling helping the Wildcats get a jump on the lead by scoring 10 of KSU's first fifteen, the Western Kentucky fought back by working the ball in transition and forcing turnovers. But there was little doubt who would take control of this game: the Wildcats just created too many match up nightmares -- especially with West moving Clarence Weaver into the starting line up at the 2. Once West took a time out to adjust the defense, the Wildcat's length and speed helped them roll to a huge lead early and never let go.

Unfortunately, as the Wildcats were running down the clock in the second half, former starter L.L. Burns sprained his shoulder while drawing a foul. Burns will miss a few weeks of play, and the Wildcats will have to adjust. Burns had been making solid contributions on the floor, and the only reason he was pulled from the starting line up was because West wanted to experiment with different line ups.

Although the Wildcats are deep, this is the wrong time to lose one of their quality players in the back court. The next slate of games will be a far tougher set of opponents, and every contributor on the court or bench counts.

For now the Wildcats will take a 34 point victory -- but the Wildcat's schedule for the next month is brutal. It is going to take a greater level of effort and poise -- and with a team full of Freshmen and Sophomores they young squad will need to lean on Coach West's experience.

                        Taste of the Action
                        vs.

The next round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic pitted two teams from the Big 12, and if this game was an early indication of what is in store for these teams in conference play a reevaluation may be in order. Baylor may be better than we thought, and Kansas State may have some work to do.

Reggie Dickerson showed Kansas State who was the top Freshman on the court

A lot has been made of Kansas State's recruiting class, but the player with the biggest impact on this game was Baylor's stud PG Reggie Dickerson. The true freshman PG was able to get whatever shot he wanted, and in addition was able to control the pace of the game. Both teams played it close with Kansas State holding a slight edge due to superior inside play. However, the Bears, led by Fats Blair (what were his parents thinking?) siezed control of the game by scoring the last 13 points of the first half.

Baylor's off ball movement befuddled the Wildcats throughout the game

The Madison Square Garden crowd kept waiting for Kansas State to make a run of their own, but it never materialized. The Wildcats came out flat footed on defense and constantly let Baylor get into open spaces. Down 15 and furious, West yanked all of his starters for players who, according to what was overhearing in the huddle, "came to play the ******* game." The reserves responded to bringing the game to within four, but consecutive threes from Blair and Dickerson pushed the game out of reach.

Overall, the Wildcats were done in by inconsistent performances. Barney Conroy did not hit a single field goal, and the Wildcats do much worse when teams do not have to guard their point. Meanwhile, Dana Worthington got a number of clean looks under the basket but could not capitalize. As a result, they drop this tournament match up 81-73 and face Alabama in the third place game.

                          Questions Remain after Flame-Out
                          vs. #24

The third place game for the Coaches vs. Cancer classic lived up to its billing, with two strong squads from the Big 12 ans SEC fighting it out. The game would come down to who would be able to seize momentum and who was able to hit the big shot. Alabama was able to take advantage of Kansas State's self destruction in the second half by hitting 11-15 from beyond the arc, and 17-27 for the game, and as a result the Crimson Tide gained separation and won by a 99-85 margin.

Clarence Weaver opts for the layup instead of the dunk and got benched as a result

The Wildcats will be leaving this game with more questions than answers. Their performance was keyed by inconsistent effort, especially by Clarence Weaver. The Memphis transfer was able to eat weaker mid-major opponents for lunch, but for the second game in a row struggled against level competition. He was not the only one who failed to assert himself around the rim, but when Kansas State faced a 14 point deficit in the first half he was one of the first ones yanked to the bench.

West brought Esteban Kummer back into the game, and he responded by burying four straight three pointers. The sophomore helped spark a 20-0 run that brought Kansas State all the way back into the game and then some.

But any time the Wildcats thought they could take control of the game, Alabama had an answer. The teams entered the half tied with no one having a clear edge in momentum.

Dennis Corrigan shot the Wildcats out of the gym by going 7-10 from beyond the arc

The Crimson Tide rolled into the second half shooting well from the floor, but they turned their game up a notch. Kansas State was already struggling with their perimeter defense, but good ball movement and deadly accuracy allowed Alabama to get even more open looks. Led by Dennis Corrigan and Loren Worley, Alabama jumped to a quick second half lead by hitting three after three after three.

The Wildcats could have stayed competitive, but their inexperience showed as they began to crack under pressure. After playing a relatively clean game in the first half, the Wildcats started to look desperate and turned the ball over 7 times in half's opening minutes. Alabama's lead exploded to 15, and this time Kummer, nor anyone else, could shoot Kansas State back into the game. Instead, all the Wildcats could do was watch Alabama hit more shots as the game spun out of control and slipped away.

                          Kansas State Early Season Thoughts

Although raw, Kansas State has talent enough to match up with all but a few teams in the country. They have size, speed, and the ability to shoot over defenses that pack the paint. It is a team built by Coach West's philosophy for his system. The goal is to pressure the ball hard, work the ball to the basket through transition, and drive and kick the ball to shooters on the wings. The plan may sound simple, but it is a common formula for success.

But what have the Wildcats shown so far this season? They have been able to toy with lesser competition, but when faced with winnable games against stronger opponents they wilted and faded away. The players are still not used to playing together, and while L.L. Burns' early injury put the lineup in flux it looks like Coach West may have been in the midst of tinkering with it anyway.

So far last year's performers have continued to perform, but the new pieces are still trying to find their role. Duncan Bird is a good shooter who seems more content to pass the ball, while Barney Conroy turns the ball over in bunches and is either really hot or really cold from beyond the arc. But maybe the most frustrating player of all is Clarence Weaver, who has the size, speed and skill to go anywhere between the 2 and 4 spots in the line up. Weaver has shown flashes of what he can do when attacking the basket, but he has also shown a lack of tenacity that got him benched back in Memphis. Coach West has shown he has little tolerance for players who settle for bad shots near the basket, and if Weaver doesn't turn his game around, there could be a comfortable spot on the bench for him next to Roger Guzman.

The Wildcats travel to Dayton next week to face a Flyer squad who will be looking to even the score after last week's defeat. But then the schedule is going to get far tougher for the Wildcats, including dates with undefeated Oregon State, #13 Utah State & #4 Connecticut along with a trip to #8 Arizona. It is entirely possible that the Wildcats could end up very much on the wrong side of .500 if they do not step up their game.

This is the kind of schedule Coach West builds for his squad to test them early. For everyone in Manhattan's sake, hopefully this does not turn into the second time in three years where West broke his team's spirit and NCAA chances in out of conference play.

cool. Hope you enjoyed it. As for the game, it's hard to win when the other team can't miss from beyond the arc. But that's true in real life as well as video game basketball.

                                Looking for the Right Pieces

                                vs.

Dayton was hungry and looking for sweet revenge. Guy West had inserted his third new starting line up in four games. Shots were not going in, and the home crowd was alive and flying. The view from the court was grim, and the Wildcats entered the half down a few points but looking ready to break and drop three straight after winning their first three games.

Last year's Wildcats were marred by cold streaks. Would the bugaboo rear its head again in Dayton, OH?

There is no question that Kansas State is a superior squad to Dayton, but the Flyers came out with fists swinging and did their best to bruise the Wildcats into submissions. Kansas State was clearly affected by their pressure and the crowd noise. Esteban Kummer, who had been shooting so well earlier this season, looked uncomfortable returning to his starting role. He was clearly rattled and managed to miss all of his field goal attempts.

Dana Worthington's fast break failure was an early sign the Wildcats were in trouble

Of course, Kummer was not the only one underachieving for the Wildcats. Dana Worthington continued to struggle with his shot in traffic. A missed open dunk on a fast break had to be the worst -- and Worthington was sent back to the bench to the jeers of the crowd.

Coach West had to find a winning formula and quickly. His team was slipping out of the game in a hurry.

The Wildcats turned it around on this fast break 3 from Freshman Duncan Bird

The solution ended up coming from the bench in the form of Freshman Duncan Bird. While he had shown flashes of quality play, Bird had been lost in the shuffle of who to match up with Gatling along the wing. Bird's size and speed helped shore up Kansas State's lackluster perimeter defense, and the Wildcats were buoyed by his shooting touch and ability to jam it home from almost anywhere inside the 3 point line.

What started out as a 3 point deficit for the Wildcats swung quickly in their direction. Between Bird, Gatling and Conroy hitting long shots and making smart passes, the floor began to open up for the Wildcats. It did not take long for DaMarcus Ross, who missed much of the first half with foul trouble, to be freed up and wreck havoc on the Flyers interior defense.

Archie Dobbins tries to get Dayton back in the game with this sweet strip of Barney Conroy

Suddenly it was the Flyers that lost control. Although Archie Dobbins gave them a spark off the bench, there was little Dayton could do but watch as Conroy or Bird slowed down the half court offense, wind down the shot clock, and get the ball to Ross for an automatic bucket. The Wildcats were able to match any points Dayton put on the board. Eventually Dayton was forced to start chucking desperation threes -- and as Dayton is not a team built to come back quickly from beyond the arc, the missed shots and air balls sealed their fate.

In the end, the final score was 72-60, but the double digit margin does not tell the whole story. This was a character building win for the Wildcats, who needed a bounce back after two tough losses. But with Kansas State's next four opponents ranked, or very likely about to be ranked, in the Top 25, Coach West's squad is going to need more than character to carry the day.
