While it is great to see just how much Ross developed under West's tutaledge in his Freshman year, the NBA will be calling for someone who is so tall (7'1") and has so much potential (A). He will probably be around Manhattan, KS next season, but how much longer after that?

Multiple All-Americans is a great achievement for Kansas State. One wonders whether we will be seeing their names listed in the columns above in future years. Both Gatling and Ross will make it to the NBA one day (barring injury). For Gatling, like Ross as noted above, it is a matter of when, not if.

End of Season Reflections
The Wildcats took a step towards the future this season. Their late season drop out of the NCAA field is lamentable, but forgivable. The team is young, and Coach West had to do his best to get the most talent out of his squad and teach them AND hit the recruiting trail hard. And what does Kansas State have to show for it? Accolades and a trophy? Sure. But maybe the biggest prize of all is keeping Coach West around.
It is an open secret that there has been a clashing of heads and styles between Coach West and the Kansas State Athletic Director. While the friction never spilled out into the public, their relationship reportedly frosted after some disagreements in how to approach the team and the program. According to inside accounts, Coach West decided to turn his full attention to the basketball program instead of create a stink and create a poor environment for his young squad to grow in.
Some were surprised that West and Kansas State were able to come to terms to an agreement before the season. But the deciding factor may have been borne straight from the West's isolation. According to parties who do not wish to be identified, the Kansas State AD canvassed others who had worked with West in the past and learned a simple, if sometimes troublesome, axiom: West works best when he is allowed to work unimpeded. While no one knows what was discussed in their contract talk before the team left for New York, apparently it had less to do with contract terms and more to do with working conditions.
Does this mean Kansas State may have to deal with the occasional headache of Coach West's temperament or on court antics? Sure. But is the basketball program better to travel down the rabbit hole with him? Absolutely.

As for West's management of the team, it is interesting to see how he stuck with his plan of developing younger players by giving them minutes through thick and thin. Roger Guzman proved to be a very efficient player, especially by the end of the season, but his minutes were still limited. Having three reliable big bodies is a luxury enough -- but there may not be minutes to spare to rotate four.
Meanwhile, Justin Guzman's conditioning really saved this team. He was able to carry a heavy load at point guard throughout the season. Fortunately, West will have more than Micheal Martin to lean on next season, but the NIT run would not have been possible with the Senior floor general who had spent his entire time at KSU waiting in the wings.
Finally, Coach West will need to figure out what to do with Esteban Kummer. He is a versatile player, but not quite fast enough to keep up with everyone at the 2 spot. With new bodies coming in, Kummer could have to come off the bench and may lose a chunk of minutes despite providing good production -- especially in the passing game. Time will tell if Kummer remains in the starting lineup or shifts to being the sixth man.

Recruiting Recap: This Could Get Fun & Ugly
How does he do it? Norfolk or Philadelphia? Sure, there's answers. But Manhattan, KS is considered one of the least desirable, most depressing and despondent college atmospheres in the country. In the past, the area has scared away recruits. But on days like today, it looks like Coach West has turned another corner for the program in what must be considered one of the greatest recruiting classes of all time.
Kansas State End of Season Recruiting - 2018 NAME POS CLASS HOMETOWN HT WT CALIBER #2 Roland Sanders (AA) #2 PF HS Shreveport, LA (Mr. BB) 6'7" 213 #7 Duncan Bird (AA) #1 SG HS Brookings, SD (Mr. BB) 6'3" 192 #8 L.L. Burns (AA) #2 SG HS St. Louis, MO (Mr. BB) 6'1" 183 #16 Brent Coggins (AA) #2 SF HS Dallas, TX 6'8" 226 Barney Conroy PG JUCO San Bernadino, CA 6'3" 221
Three of these players were signed mid season, and according to West there was not too much competition among the later signings to sign up. In fact, Coach West had his pick of a number of top prospects to bring into the fold, but in the end he settled with four of the top 16 prospects in the country. Adding in the top Junior College transfer is just icing on the cake.
Of course, the press has decided, oddly enough, to stop with their "instant analysis" of ranking recruiting classes as soon as they're signed, instead waiting for practice time and off-season development to gauge how players might pan out on rosters. It seems odd that Kansas State would haul in such a decorated class and not finish #1, but that's exactly what happened:
NCAA Top Recruiting Classes - Rated October 1, 2018 RK TEAM 5 4 3 2 1 TOTAL 1 Louisville (3 AA 3 Mr BB) 3 1 0 0 0 4 2 Maryland (1 AA 1 Mr BB) 2 3 4 0 0 9 3 Kansas State (4 AA 3 Mr BB) 5 0 0 0 0 5 4 North Carolina (3 AA 1 Mr BB) 3 1 0 0 0 4 5 Georgia Tech (3 AA 2 Mr BB) 3 2 0 0 0 5 6 Florida State (2 AA 1 Mr BB) 2 2 0 0 0 4 7 Xavier (0 AA 1 Mr BB) 0 3 1 0 0 4 8 South Carolina (0 AA 0 Mr BB) 0 0 3 2 0 5 9 Connecticut (1 AA 2 Mr BB) 1 4 1 0 0 6 10 Memphis (0 AA 1 Mr BB) 0 2 1 1 0 4
Despite not getting a #1 recruiting class feather in his cap, Coach West will have to be excited about the players he has brought in. These young players compliment the members of his squad very well already. Expectations in Manhattan will have risen significantly, but that's part of the ball game. One wonders if anything short of a National Title in the next four years will be a disappointment. Time will tell.
Roland Saunders (PF from Shreveport, LA; All-American & Mr. Basketball): Definitely the surprise get of the class, Saunders was thought to be interested in schools with a bigger need for his position. The Wildcats are stacked in the front court, but Saunders gives them an entirely different dimension. He can shoot from outside as good as anybody, and he can throw his body around in the paint. He has a complete offensive game, and his defense is not far behind. So why Manhattan, KS? Because he wants a coach who will help him succeed at the next level: the NBA.
Duncan Bird (SG from Brookings, SD; All-American & Mr. Basketball): To Bird, the basket is just a simple plaything. Few were better than him in the country at getting points on the board. He has a sweet shooting stroke and unlimited shooting range, but also has speed and size to break down almost any wing defender and get his own shot. Bird fills a glaring hole for the Wildcats, and it would not be a surprise if he was constantly at the front of the pack on fast breaks -- at least if his 3 medals from state track meets his senior year are any indication.
L.L. Burns (SG from St. Louis, MO; All-American & Mr. Basketball): The undersized combo guard in the vien of Monta Ellis or Russel Westbrook is back and now in Manhattan. Burns is a great defender whose quick hands frustrate opponents, but he also has a good level of offensive savvy. He is a good passer who still needs to work on not calling his own number first and getting his teammates involved. But he has many skills Coach West will be able to take advantage of wherever he fits in the back court rotation.
Brent Coggins (SF from Dallas, TX; All-American): If this class is any indication, Coach West cannot have enough shooters. Coggins is long, can shoot the three, and can run around defenders with huge strides. If this sounds familiar -- it should. His game is very similar to Branduinn Gatling. But if you strike gold, why only pick at the vein once? Coggins is another player who will be able to space the floor and ease pressure on the big men.
Barney Conroy (PG from San Bernadino, CA; JRCO Freshman): Last, but certainly not least, is the only true point guard of this year's class. Conroy has incredible size and strength for his position, and while he is an adequate shooter his biggest strength is floor vision. Often times he finds team mates who are open before they know they are open. Conroy should be able to fit in right away in West's scheme because he fits the mold to a T. He is a pass first point guard, but can make a shot and keep the defense honest when the need arises.Comment

Wow, that is an absolutely star-studded recruiting class. Combined with all those big guys you recruited and this team is gonna be stacked in 2 years or so once everyone develops.Last edited by HarkTheSound; 03-17-2013, 02:26 PM.Bengals

And my team's overall rating next year will be enough to compete. Unity will be an issue (I have effects set at 100 for user and cpu), but what my squad may lack in elite talent it will be able to more than make up for in terms of sheer depth. My rotation could easily have some players with a higher overall coming off the bench. You'll see what I mean when I post the roster.Comment

2018-2019 Season Preview
This is why Guy West was so hotly pursued years ago, and this is what fans were hoping for when he cam to Kansas State. Very few in the country can say they are as good at building a talent base as West, but the time has come for the Wildcats to take the next step. They are more than good enough to break into the NCAA Tournament. An NIT Championship won't be good enough this year. Instead, how far can this squad make it. It is not unprecedented for a team so young to reach the Final Four, although hopefully there are no recruiting violations that would render it null a la Michigan.
But with new contract in hand, a team full of players he brought in, and the program and fan base behind him instead of on his back, this should be Guy West's year. With the talent on this roster, better be.

Kansas State Roster
The Wildcats are a whole new team. Eleven players have been brought in over the past two years, and before entering the fall it looked like six new players would have to be broken into the rotation. After a few necessary, if somewhat controversial, red-shirts, that number is down to four. But while Manhattan won't be able to showcase all of its newest players, the ones that will be battling on the court can match up with almost anyone in the country.
2018-2019 Kansas State Wildcats (89 OVR) # NAME POS HT WT CLASS HOMETOWN 54 Dannorriss Walls (83) C 6'11" 262 SO Bronx, NY 21 Clarence Weaver (83) SF 6'8" 243 RS JR Memphis, TN 52 Dana Worthington (80) C 6'9" 235 SO Bethlehem, PA 22 Barney Conroy (80) PG 6'3" 230 SO San Bernardino, CA 42 Roland Saunders (80 R) PF 6'7" 217 FR Shreveport, LA 34 L.L. Coach West spoke to both of them about the possibility of red-shirtting before recruiting and both were open to the possibility. When asked about why he would break up his "fab five," West said, "It's a matter of minutes. Cogs and Saunders are going to be very good players, but they need time on the court to develop. Redshirtting them is all about maximizing their opportunities while maintaining their eligibility."
The move means Roger Guzman and Moses Mathis will continue to see some rotation time, although who knows how much the seniors' minutes will be limited. While West is still working on his rotation and has said it will remain subject to change in the early weeks of the season, for now it looks like Esteban Kummer has been slid to the sixth man role in favor of L.L. Burns. They do have similar skills, with Burns being faster and a better shooter and defender, but West may miss Kummer's extra length against some match ups.
The true enigma is Clarence Weaver. The Memphis transfer has a big body and can be a bruising defender. But he is a "good at many things master of none" form of player. West tends to recruit wings who can shoot from a distance, but Weaver needs a lot of work in that department. He tried to establish himself as a slasher and hustle man with the Tigers, but he had trouble breaking into the rotation there. It remains to be seen whether Weaver has similar problems in Manhattan.
Kansas State Schedule
After the Kansas State Athletic director was panned for creating a schedule that kept the Wildcats out of the NCAA Tournament, there needed to be a fundamental change in philosophy. This year, the Wildcats will have ample opportunity to test their mettle off their home court and on neutral floors. The going is going to be tough, very tough, with 8 of Kansas State's opponents ranked in the pre-season Top 25. But with this kind of schedule, plus a number of quality power and mid-major opponents, the Wildcats will be one of the most tested teams in the country come March. Hopefully they can keep it together and stay relevant.
Oh, and one of those 8 Top 25 teams is Drexel. Don't need three guesses to figure how they wound up on the schedule.
