        November 26, 2010

        By Jeremy Wilson (fictional)

It's been almost a month into a new basketball season, but the Raiders men's basketball team is still up to its old habits. Even with the arrival of new head coach Tyrell Coley, Colgate is currently 0-6 to start the season. Last season, the Raiders went nine games before earning their first win - a 63-44 victory over Dartmouth. That win was the start of five wins in six games for Colgate, something fans are hoping to see the team this year do and then some.

We caught up with Coach Coley for interview on the team's progress so far.

Colgate Maroon News (CMN): So Coach, the team is off to a slow start with an 0-6 record. What do you attribute to the team's current struggles?

        Coach Tyrell Coley (TC):
We've played some really good competition. While we are a good team ourselves, we have a lot of work to do to get to the level where we can be on the better teams around. It just takes time, practice, and playing together as a team.

CMN: Since center Nick Pascale had a 34 point, 11 rebound performance against Marist, he is averaging just 8.0 ppg and 6.7 rpg over the last three games at the Anaheim Classic. Why the sudden decrease in his production?

TC: For starters, the teams at the Anaheim Classic scouted us really well. They knew that Nick has a great inside presence and they adjusted to it and kept him in check. I'm not worried about his numbers because it's still early in the season. He still has time to make the necessary adjustments against defenses and continue to be a great post player.

CMN: What do you feel the team needs to do to earn their first win of the season.

TC: Well, we have to play a full 40 minutes. We've had great stretches, but haven't put all the pieces together throughout an entire game. If we can play a full 40 minutes, we can start winning ballgames.

CMN: Colgate's bench players are averaging just 11.6 ppg - just 18.8% of the teams total points per game. What seems to be the problem with the bench performance?

TC: We're trying to find what works with our bench. With Mitch [Rolls] and Joe [Hoban] being the only two guys off the bench who can really shoot the ball from deep, it limits our game to just driving inside. Teams know that and they've been able to take advantage of it and force outside shots. We've just got to attack the basket a hell of a lot more, because the bench needs to keep the game intact while the starters rest.

CMN: That's all the time we have for now, thank you for talking with us. Good luck the rest of the season.

        TC: Thank you.

Rough start to the season, but I'm sure you'll turn it around. Faced some stiff competition in the Anaheim Classic.

You're not kidding. I really underestimated South Alabama, but I couldn't keep Colgate in the entire game with San Diego and Mississippi State. Hopefully, the losing streak is on its way to a close.

So I decide to breathe life back into this. I don't really have the time to play this lately now that I'm trying to complete a season on The Show and NCAA 12 comes out Tuesday, so what I plan to do is just sim and recruit and do monthly updates on the season.

                COLGATE FINISHES NOVEMBER WINLESS

Fresh off a last place finish at the Anaheim Classic, the Colgate Raiders returned home only to take a 68-43 beating at the hands of the Cornell Big Red (5-1). No Raider scored in double digits as Brandon James led the team with 8 points off 4-of-16 shooting. Colgate was down just three points at halftime, but Cornell opened up the half on a run that the Raiders just couldn't stop.

The schedule only gets tougher for Colgate in December as they start the month with a trip to St. John's (2-2). Other opponents in the last calendar month include trips to Fordham and Boston College, and then a rematch with St. John's in the first round of the Aeropostale Holiday Festival.

Glad to see you still plugging away. I really enjoy reading College Hoops legacies. Maybe it's because it was reading and posting over a 2k forums that brought me here and continued to feed my desire to share mine as well.

However like you with NCAA12 coming out tomorrow and I am sure I will slow down on my Hoops thread as well.

I've decided to breathe life back into this. Haven't played it in a while, but realized that I still have the save file on my PS3 and I'm going to get back into the mix of things.

Colgate continues to struggle shooting, Red Storm keep Raiders winless

Still winless on the season, things didn't get any easier for Colgate as they traveled to Queens, NY to face the St. John's Red Storm. The difference in the skill levels of the players was evident as Colgate shot just 32% from the floor en route to a 73-51 defeat in front of the 4,700 fans at Carnesecca Arena.

On the plus side for Colgate, the Raiders only turned over the ball five times - coming into the game they averaged 14 a contest. Despite the better ball control, they couldn't win the battle of the boards (outrebounded 37-21) which led to a 56% shooting performance from St. John's.

The game was always a blowout. Colgate managed to keep pace with St. John's for the majority of the first half, never falling behind by more than five until a late runs toward halftime sent the Raiders to the lockers down by 15.

To make matters worse, forward Sterling Melville left the game in the second half with what was later diagnosed as a pulled muscle in his right leg. Coach Coley said Melville will be day-to-day.

Coach's Comments: "We played a tough game. St. John's is a tough team, they beat us on the boards and when that happens it usually decides who wins the game. Tried to do things a little different tonight, didn't work out so we'll be back at it in a couple days against Fordham."

                          Colgate signs Hopkins

                          December 2, 2010

Colgate Univeristy Athletic Director David Roach announced today that Sheray Hopkins has officially signed his letter of intent to play basketball in Hamilton next season. The 6'8" power forward out of Bridgeport, CT was a two star prospect who averaged 12.4 ppg and 8.4 rpg his senior season in high school. Hopkins is described as an "all-around player with skills suited for the collegiate level...not a superstar, but an asset nonetheless."

Hopkins himself added "I'm happy to be playing for Coach Coley and Colgate next season. I wanted to stay somewhat close to home and when it came down to it, Colgate was the best fit for me."

Hopkins should hope to immediately help bolster a skimpy backcourt for Colgate, with just three Raiders taller than 6'6".

Wow that is solid getting an unranked 2* recruit who averaged 12/8.

                                Raiders embarrassed at Rose Hill

It was another rough night for the Colgate Raiders as poor defense led to a 93-61 drubbing at the hands of the Fordham Rams. Between shooting 36% from the floor, 15% from beyond the arc, allowing 16 offensive rebounds, and giving up 56 points in the paint; Colgate had everything go wrong in this loss.

Fordham opened the game with a 7-0 run that escalated into a 19-4 lead before Colgate even blinked. The lone bright spot was Brandon James, who scored 14 points in the first half and finished with 18 points and five rebounds.

John Brandenburg lended a hand off the bench, making six of 11 shots for 13 points and had 11 rebounds to go along with it in just 19 minutes on the floor. Nick Pascale, who not too long ago had a 34 point, 11 rebound performance against Marist, took just four shots and thanks to foul trouble saw just 18 minutes of action. Pascale had five points and five rebounds.

Fordham never really felt threatened by Colgate at all in the game and cruised to their second victory of the season. Ryan Hage led the Rams with 16 points, while Alberto Estwick and Kervin Bristol each added 12 points.

Coach's Comments: "Was not our best effort by a long shots. Gave up too many second chance shots, too many offensive rebounds. You can't expect to win if you do that. You just can't."
