The Pac Ten is home to the top two teams in the nation all year long, Stanford and UCLA. The strength of those two teams is obviously helping out the RPI ratings of several of their conference foes. Past those two teams, USC is the only other Pac Ten team with a .500 record as the rest of the conference beat up on each other. Is it possible that five to six Pac Ten teams with losing conference records get into the NCAA Tournament? It remains to be seen.

Stephen F. Austin 21-5 (RPI #60)
UT-Arlington 23-10 (RPI #74)
It's not a good year to be on the bubble as there were several upsets during the conference tournament season. Teams like St. Francis, Stephen F. Austin, and UT-Arlington won their regular season conference titles, but slipped up in the conference tournaments and their fates rests in the hands of the selection committee. The bubble is never a good place to be, but there are four teams that are far from the bubble. The selection committee is pleased to announce the four number one seeds in the 2009 NCAA Tournament, starting with the #1 overall seed....

Re: "Eye of the Tiger" - The Coaching Legacy of Jason Whitt (CH2k8)
Selection Sunday
East Regional
#1 Stanford vs Play-in Winner (Alabama State vs Mercer)
#8 Florida State vs #9 Arizona State
#5 Ohio State vs #12 Auburn
#4 Clemson vs #13 North Dakota State
#6 Memphis vs #11 BYU
#3 Providence vs #14 Columbia
#7 Wisconsin-Milwaukee vs #10 Iowa State
#2 Oklahoma State vs #15 Tennessee-Martin
In a wierd display by the selection committee, they send the number one overall seed Cardinal across the way into the East Regional. Oklahoma State comes in as a team that could challenge the Cardinal if both teams make it to the Elite 8. Providence and Clemson should breeze into the second round. Ohio State could have trouble with an Auburn squad that is in the field after winning the SEC Tournament. Brigham Young and Iowa State got off the bubble and into the field. BYU will take on the defending National Champion Memphis Tigers.
West Regional
#1 Duke vs #16 Northern Iowa
#8 Nebraska vs #9 Oregon
#5 Michigan State vs #12 Marshall
#4 Marquette vs #13 Wyoming
#6 California vs #11 Texas-Arlington
#3 Michigan vs #14 Radford
#7 Boston University vs #10 George Washington
#2 Louisville vs #15 Utah State
Try and tell us that Coach K doesn't have dirty pictures hidden in his office. Shockingly, the selection committee give the Blue Devils a #1 seed. If anything, #1 and #2 should be flipped. Louisville is the best team in this region and Pitino's squad should get to the Final Four. The media will probably be fired up at the at-large selection of UT-Arlington, who had an RPI of 74th.
South Regional
#1 UCLA vs #16 Morgan State
#8 Virginia Tech vs #9 Wake Forest (One of the few issues I have with this game)
#5 Syracuse vs #12 Cal State Northridge
#4 Tennessee vs #13 Siena
#6 Arizona vs #11 St. Mary's
#3 Connecticut vs #14 Wagner
#7 Washington State vs #10 St. Francis (PA)
#2 Notre Dame vs #15 Bucknell
UCLA has been the 1B to Stanford's 1A for much of the season and they are the class of this region and should make it to another final four. A team to keep an eye on will be the Tennessee Volunteers as they have the athleticism to match UCLA. Most of the other top seeds in this region have flaws which is why UCLA is the pick in this region.
Midwest Regional
#1 Pittsburgh vs #16 FIU
#8 Davidson vs #9 UAB
#5 Gonzaga vs #12 Miami (OH)
#4 USC vs #13 Charlotte
#6 North Carolina vs #11 Vermont
#3 Texas vs #14 James Madison
#7 Miami (FL) vs #10 Purdue
#2 Villanova vs #15 Montana
The one thing that sticks out in this regional is the fact that Villanova got a two-seed when most pundits had them as a four-seed. This regional will be considered the wildcard as there is little separation between the top seeds. Any of the top six seeds could realistically make it to the Final Four.

Seeding Reaction
I know it was a forgone conclusion that we were in, but it was still exciting to have the fans in the arena watching the selection show. There are so many story lines going on. We're very happy to get a 14 when it was looking like we were going to be a 15. As you all know, my very first win here at Radford came against Michigan and I've already heard my guys talking about beating them again. And this game will be a homecoming for me. Rupp Arena has been good to me. Won a state title there when I was a high school coach. Plus, I grew up just 90 minutes down the road, so I'll have plenty of friends and family there at the game. The mystique of that place still leaves me in awe.Comment

Re: "Eye of the Tiger" - The Coaching Legacy of Jason Whitt (CH2k8)
Wolverines outlast Highlanders
Glass slipper doesn't fit for Highlanders in 70-67 defeat.
Lexington, KY - With the Kentucky Wildcats not in post season play for the first time since the late 80s when the Cats were on probation, Big Blue Nation turned their attention to one of their own. Rupp Arena being packed for a basketball game between a school in Virginia and a school in Michigan might seem weird to most people outside of the Bluegrass state. But when the coach of one of those schools is a native Kentuckian (and he grew up a UK fan), the Big Blue Nation came out in support of one of their own.
The fan response for the Radford Highlanders was something that Jason Whitt wasn't counting on.
"It was like a home game for us out there," Whitt said. "Most of these neutral site games generally see the neutral fans cheering for the underdog, but its generally a 50/50 split. Today though, you had a section of Michigan fans cheering for Michigan. You had a section of Radford fans cheering for Radford. And then you had the rest of the arena who were Kentucky fans cheering for us. We fed off of that energy."
It was a game that went back and forth throughout the entire 40 minutes with neither team taking a lead larger than eight points. But in the end, the Wolverines over-powered the Highlanders on the inside and were able to hang on for a 70-67 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
"We wasn't just happy being here, we wanted to win," Whitt said. "We couldn't keep Michigan out of the lane and we allowed them to get to the free throw line too much today. And we were just a little too inefficient with our possessions. But, we gave them everything we wanted and we went down swinging. As a coach at a small conference school going up against one of the Power Six teams, that's all you can ask for."
The Wolverines had three players in double-figures, led by freshman swingman Nathaniel McNurlin who scored 17 points. Sophomore guard Manny Harris added 14 points. Redshirt freshman Laval Lucas-Perry chipped in with 13 points and 7 assists.
The Highlanders also had three players in double-figures, led by senior swingman Jamar Jenkins who scored a game-high 19 points. Junior guard Amir Johnson added 12 points. Senior guard Kenny Thomas chipped in with 11 points to go along with 5 assists.
The Highlanders will be disappointed with the defeat, but as Coach Whitt said, the season was a success.
"The goal for every small conference school is to get into postseason play. We accomplished our goals for the season. I was glad our senior class had the chance to play in the NCAA Tournament. When these guys came in four years ago, everybody told them they didn't have a chance of making it this far. We proved the doubters wrong. We may not be the most talented team, but we're the hardest working one. Sometimes, all you need is grit and a will to succeed."

Re: "Eye of the Tiger" - The Coaching Legacy of Jason Whitt (CH2k8)
Play-in Game
Alabama State 70, Mercer 66
First Round
East Regional
#1 Stanford 82, Alabama State 62
#8 Florida State 77, Arizona State 47
#5 Ohio State 82, #12 Auburn 69
#4 Clemson 102, #13 North Dakota State 74
#6 Memphis 63, #11 Brigham Young 84
#3 Providence 86, #14 Columbia 56
#7 Wisconsin-Green Bay 76, #10 Iowa State 56
#2 Oklahoma State 72, #15 Tennessee-Martin 67
Surprisingly, the closest game in this regional was the five point victory by the Oklahoma State Cowboys over the UT-Martin Skyhawks. Other than that, the rest of the games in the region were a borefest with blowout after blowout.
South Regional
#1 UCLA 65, #16 Morgan State 58
#8 Virginia Tech 86, #9 Wake Forest 81
#5 Syracuse 117, #12 Cal State Northridge 78
#4 Tennessee 84, #13 Siena 99
#6 Arizona 82, #11 St. Mary's 76
#3 Connecticut 86, #14 Wagner 67
#7 Washington State 61, #10 St. Francis (PA) 64
#2 Notre Dame 76, #15 Bucknell 51
The Bears of Morgan State gave the UCLA Bruins all they wanted before the Bruins finally finished them off. Mostly chalk again in this regional, though Siena blowing out Tennessee was a surprise.
Midwest Regional
#1 Pittsburgh 80, #16 Florida International 70
#8 Davidson 72, #9 UAB 82
#5 Gonzaga 73, #12 Miami (OH) 60
#4 USC 87, #13 Charlotte 64
#6 North Carolina 91, #11 Vermont 54
#3 Texas 97, #14 James Madison 65
#7 Miami (FL) 68, #10 Purdue 83
#2 Villanova 102, #15 Montana 69
Chalk, chalk, and more chalk. We don't really consider 9 and 10 seeds getting victories as huge upsets. Pittsburgh was underwhelming in their matchup with FIU. They'll have to play better than that if they hope to defeat UAB in the round of 32.
West Regional
#1 Duke 96, #16 Northern Iowa 60
#8 Nebraska 53, #9 Oregon 69
#5 Michigan State 78, #12 Marshall 65
#4 Marquette 88, #13 Wyoming 63
#6 California 87, #11 Texas-Arlington 51
#3 Michigan 70, #14 Radford 67
#7 Boston University 71, #10 George Washington 66
#2 Louisville 83, #15 Utah State 47
What's with all the chalk in this tournament? We're still waiting on the dust to settle, though Radford nearly pulled off the upset of the tournament in their loss to Michigan.Comment

Re: "Eye of the Tiger" - The Coaching Legacy of Jason Whitt (CH2k8)
Second Round
East Regional
#1 Stanford 84, #8 Florida State 87
#4 Clemson 89, #5 Ohio State 92
#3 Providence 85, #11 Brigham Young 66
#2 Oklahoma State 82, #7 Wisconsin-Green Bay 74
And down goes the first number one seed in the tournament. It's always interesting when at least one goes down on the opening weekend. It was a battle between Robin Lopez and Solomon Alabi, with Alabi coming out on top, going for 23 and 7.
South Regional
#1 UCLA 82, #8 Virginia Tech 63
#5 Syracuse 101, #13 Siena 75
#3 Connecticut 78, #6 Arizona 84
#2 Notre Dame 103, #10 St. Francis (PA) 64
UCLA looked a lot better today and Notre Dame and Syracuse keep the blowouts coming. Any of those three teams could win this region.
Midwest Regional
#1 Pittsburgh 66, #9 UAB 75
#4 USC 80, #5 Gonzaga 63
#3 Texas 105, #6 North Carolina 92
#2 Villanova 105, #10 Purude 61
Another #1 seed goes down as the Panthers came out flat again and the Dragons took advantage. Villanova humbled the Boilermakers and are now the pick to come ouf this region.
West Regional
#1 Duke 65, #9 Oregon 63
#4 Marquette 90, #5 Michigan State 73
#3 Michigan 69, #6 California 86
#2 Louisville 99, #7 Boston University 82
Duke nearly made for the third #1 seed to go down in the Round of 32, but were able to outlast the Oregon Ducks. Marquette, Cal, and Louisivlle all had comfortable wins in a tournament that really hasn't had a lot of drama.Comment

Re: "Eye of the Tiger" - The Coaching Legacy of Jason Whitt (CH2k8)
Sweet 16
#5 Ohio State 89, #8 Florida State 91
#2 Oklahoma State 80, #3 Providence 89
#1 Duke 108, #4 Marquette 74
#2 Louisville 88, #6 California 86
#1 UCLA 81, #5 Syracuse 58
#2 Notre Dame 67, #6 Arizona 75
#4 USC 74, #9 UAB 85
#2 Villanova 100, #3 Texas 85
UAB remains the highest seed alive in this tournament as they knock off the Trojans. The Seminoles of Florida State continue their roll as they knock off Ohio State. Duke, UCLA, and Villanova continue to roll and they look like shoe-ins for the Final Four.
Elite Eight
#3 Providence 76, #8 Florida State 70
#1 Duke 93, #2 Louisville 72
#1 UCLA 93, #6 Arizona 72
#2 Villanova 82, #9 UAB 66
Our comment about Duke, UCLA, and Villanova being shoe-ins for the Final Four was realized as all three teams cruised to victories. Florida State's run finally came to an end at the hands of the Providence Friars.
Final Four
#1 Duke 94, #3 Providence 80
24 points from Kyle Singler led the Blue Devils to a comfortable victory over the Providence Friars.
#1 UCLA 89, #2 Villanova 82
Foul trouble limited Kevin Love to 9 points in 17 minutes of action, but four players reached double-figures tonight for the Bruins, led by Darren Collison with 19 points.
National Championship
#1 UCLA 90, #1 Duke 86
It's not all the time you get two #1 seeds into the final game, but that's what we got this year. Kyle Singler did everything he could to get Duke back into the game, scoring a game-high 34 points. However, the Blue Devils had no answer for Kevin Love who scored 25 and Josh Shipp supported him with 23 points. The Bruins were at or near the top of the standings all year long, and they are deserving National Champions.

Nice 19-9 season! Are there any Job Offers you would accept?
Also, HOLY CRAP! I just noticed that North Carolina signed 7 5* players, that's insane!Comment
