Going in, we knew it was going to take a good game on our parts combined with a bad game on Mississippi State's part in order for us to have a chance to win this game. We played one of our best games of the year and it looked like we had a chance to win this game. But the Bulldogs are a great team. We left it all out there on the floor tonight and I don't have any real complaints about our performance. We did all we could.

But now our real season begins. We open up conference play next week. We get Amir Johnson back. As a true freshman, Darek Carrington did a tremendous job running the point for us. We got through November and December with a winning record. I like where we are at going into conference play.

It was great to see Amir Johnson back out on the floor tonight and he seemed to show no ill effects from the fractured ankle. He was driving into the lane, he was hitting shots, and he was making the passes. Our offense just looks more fluid out there when he's running the show. We let up in the second half and let Liberty get within three points, but Kenny Thomas hit some big shots and how about that block Nick McFarlin had. It's great to start conference play off with a win.

Solid win against Liberty.. Nice to see Johnson have a solid performance after the injury. Keep it up!

It seems like Johnson has more faith in his jumper this season. He's taking the open jumper more often, unlike last season when he was passing off more.

                    Thanks for reading!

Injury Update: Martell McDuffy suffered a strained achilles and will be out of action for 21 days.

The officiating tonight was...interesting to say the least. I've never seen a player pick up two tacky reach in fouls in less than a minute like Amir did tonight. But, we handled the adversity and our bench really sparked the run we went on in the first half. Stefanov played out of this world tonight. Once the game got out of hand, we let the bench get some more run. We're off to a nice start on the conference slate.

Injury Update: Kenny Thomas is day-to-day with a sore knee. He will not start against Winthrop, but will come off the bench. Chris McEachin will get the start in his place.

When you can keep VMI's three point bombers in check, you stand a good chance of getting a big win, and we did that tonight. We played a tremendous game today. Chris McEachin has been tremendous off the bench the last couple of games and Chad Crumbley has been playing very solid off the bench recently as well. We have a tough game coming up against Winthrop and we hope the fans come out and pack the Dedmon Center.

Not a whole lot went right for us tonight. We got zero contribution from the bench. We didn't hit the glass. We didn't get to the line. We didn't hit our shots. We didn't play defense. I could keep going, but any questions? No...good.

Coach Whitt's Take: Interior defense and shot selection destroyed us in this game. They scored 32 points in the paint tonight. We only scored eight. They got 12 second chance points. We didn't get a single one. That's the difference in the game. It's one thing to take perimeter shots against a zone defense when you're hitting them. But when you're not, you end up pulling a John Starks in the 1994 NBA Finals. That's what happened to us.
