Re: "Eye of the Tiger" - The Coaching Legacy of Jason Whitt (CH2k8)
High Point ends dream season
Hottest team in conference blitzes Highlanders 80-49.
Rock Hill, SC – The High Point Panthers had been the hottest team in Big South play for the past month, reeling off six straight wins. Their average margin of victory during this stretch had been 21 points. Unfortunately for the Radford Highlanders, that streak continued tonight. Eugene Harris scored a game-high 18 points as the Panthers (15-12) rolled 80-49 over the Highlanders (16-12) tonight to win the Big South title and the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
“We got caught looking ahead,” said Radford coach Jason Whitt. “And when you look ahead of a team like High Point, this is the result.”
The Panthers, perhaps the Big South’s most well-rounded team, showed that balance with an offensive performance that was almost outmatched by its defensive performance. The Panthers held the Highlanders to 32.7% from the field and only 15.8% from behind the arc.
“They took our strengths away,” said Whitt. “They simply wanted this more. When you allow a team to score 20 second chance points, you’re not going to win. When you allow a team to outrebound you by 27 boards, you’re not going to win. With our performance tonight, we’re lucky we only lost by 31. Unfortunately, we weren’t prepared and that’s on me and the coaching staff. We didn’t put our guys in the best position to succeed today. And that’s on us as a coaching staff. ”
Coach Whitt though was adamant that the Highlanders had a good season.
“Nobody expected us to make it this far,” said Whitt. “We were picked to finish dead last in the conference. This team went 8-22 last year. For us to one, have a winning season, and two, to make it one game away from the NCAA Tournament, is a success. We’ll return our top eight in the rotation next year. We’ve got some work to do on the recruiting trail. We’ve planted the seed with this season. We got a taste of what we want. Now we have to take that next step.”
Martell McDuffy led the Highlanders with 11 points off the bench. Kenny Thomas added 10 points.
The Highlanders exceeded expectations on the year, raising the expectations for the 2008-09 edition of the Radford Highlanders. With all five starters slated to return next season and the first three off the bench as well, many will expect the Highlanders to take that next step Coach Whitt talked about. For once, people in Radford, VA have something to look forward to next season.

Great job man -- I was about to post what you had already said: awesome that you'll have so many players coming back. Things are only going to get better and soon you'll be punching your own ticket to the NCAAs.
Grats on the successful season. Hopefully you have happy trails on the recruiting end of things.Comment

Dang sucks to end the year like that hope you had a good recruiting season. Just out of curiousity, do you not like going to Trent much? I remember when I had a Radford legacy, I went to him a lot and he usually got me a solid 12 points or so.“If you’re true to yourself, you’re going to be true to everyone else.”Comment

On my roster set that I downloaded eons ago...Trent is only rated a 52, compared to Gynes as a 60 and McFarlin as a 57. And since they were both freshman (and strangely had higher awareness ratings), I decided to go with the youth movement. Trenth was hit and miss off the bench. Some games, he would come off the bench and battle in the trenches...others he would blend into the floor. Of course, Gynes and McFarlin did the same thing. In retrospect, I maybe should have given him more of a chance to compete.Comment

The upset of the tournament was obviously in the South region as Saint Joseph's upset Tennessee. If you picked chalk in the Midwest Regional, congrats, you were a winner. Lots of exciting action in the first round. The Round of 32 will hopefully bring more excitement.Comment

St. Joseph's magical run continues as a 21-point performance from Pat Calathes surged them ahead of the Kentucky Wildcats. A couple other double-digit seeds made it into the Sweet 16, but a lot of the major title contenders also made it as well, including all four #1 seeds. The second weekend of the tournament should prove to be exciting.Comment

Coach Whitt: Kinda surprised that Chris McEachin did not get consideration for the Freshman All-Big South team, considering he put up better stats than Winthrop's Byron Faison. It's unfortunate we were shut out of the awards ceremony, but they can't keep us down forever. The good news is that of the ten members of the All-Conference teams, who were thorns in my side every time we played, 7 of them are graduating. So we have that going for us.Comment

Had to point this typo out to you. It says that Vandy made it to the Elite 8... I'm pretty sure you meant to have Wright St. beat them in the first round. That would be more realistic.“If you’re true to yourself, you’re going to be true to everyone else.”Comment

2008 Recruiting Class
Chad Crumbley, Cincinnati OH
*** (65 OVR) 6’8” 218lbs HS SR PF
C Pot – OVR #419 – POS #84
With the departure of three post players from last year’s team, we knew that we would need front court help. We were on this kid from day one. We were worried when Ohio State offered a scholarship at the last minute, satisfying his #2 and #3 recruiting priorities of playing for a big program and being close to home. Luckily for us, his #1 priority, feeling wanted, won out for us as he signed his letter of intent. Very springy big who has a good mid-range game and has quick hands on the defensive end.
Ije Stefanov, Cincinnati OH
** (52 OVR) 6’10” 229lbs HS SR PF
F POT – OVR NR – POS NR
He has size…and that’s about it. In a small conference, sometimes, that’s all you need.
Darek Carrington, Columbus OH
** (51 OVR) 6’2” 172lbs HS SR PG
D POT – OVR #662 – POS #179
Has a decent jumper, but he’s a bit on the slow side. Not the ideal PG for our system, but could potentially grow into the role if he improves his handle and his jumper.
Regis Cobb, North Richland Hills TX
** (51 OVR) 5’8” 162lbs JUCO SO PG
F POT – OVR NR – POS NR
Walk-on PG who is fast….but that’s about it. Gives us the option of redshirting Darek Carrington if we decide to go that route.
Darrall Garza, Taylor MI
** (48 OVR) 6’4” 190lbs HS SR PG
F POT – OVR NR – POS NR
Very speedy PG and good on-ball defender, but unfortunately has trouble going full speed and hanging on to the ball. If he can improve his handle and his jumper, could be a player for us down the road. Likely redshirt candidate.
Kasib Gill, Corpus Christi TX
** (48 OVR) 6’7” 201lbs HS SR SF
F POT – OVR NR – POS NR
Walk-on slashing SF. Does a decent job getting into the lane, but not much else. Most likely, a JAG.

While I was happy with our first recruiting class, in the end, we want to build a dynasty here at Radford and middle-of-the-road recruiting classes just won't cut it. We went out and hired two of the best recruiters available to us and we hope we can hit the ground running. This next class will be important to achieving our goals.Last edited by jasontoddwhitt; 06-05-2011, 07:43 PM.Comment
