Yeah, Jamar is also a senior, so I have to replace my top two scorers. I think a combination of current players and newcomers should help fill the void.

Also, HOLY CRAP! I just noticed that North Carolina signed 7 5* players, that's insane!
The only job offer that gave me pause was the Boston University job opening up. But with 8 seniors on their squad this season, I decided to stick it out with Radford for another season. Besides if I'm moving jobs, I want to go to a bigger conference than the America East.

And yes, that is no typo, North Carolina signed 7 5* players (6 freshmen, 1 JUCO). How that's not the #1 class in the country, I don't know.

Sorry for the long break there, but real life gets in the way sometimes. I'm kind of excited about this version of the Radford Highlanders. Probably will be some growing pains at first, but hey, so did last year's squad. We all saw how that went. I'll get the recruiting class up before I have to head to class.

      2009 Recruiting Class

      Reggie Neskovic, Columbus OH
      *** (69ovr) 6’5” 207lbs JUCO SO SF
C- POT – OVR NR – POS NR

With the departures of Kenny Thomas and Jamar Jenkins, we have a void in our offense and Reggie can hopefully help fill that void. This kid lives from 15-20 feet out. Reggie has a very well-rounded game and he’s proved already that he’s one of the best players on the team and will be in the starting lineup from day one. Too bad he only has two years of eligibility left.

      Simon Lambert, Springfield OH
      ** (58ovr) 6’4” 214lbs HS SR SF
      F POT – OVR #682 – POS #143

Simon is a shooter who should fit in nicely on our team. Nearly played his way into the starting lineup this preseason, but rest assured, he’ll get plenty of minutes off the bench, especially when we need some offense.

      Dale Fameni, Cincinnati OH
      ** (53ovr) 6’2” 190lbs JUCO FR SG
C- POT – OVR NR – POS NR

We dipped into the JUCO ranks again to find Dale and he’ll come in with three years of eligibility. Very good on-ball defender, but he needs to work on the other facets of his game before he can become a contributor at this level. Likely red-shirt candidate.

      Bert Benjamin, Palatine IL
      * (46ovr) 7’2” 258lbs HS SR C
D POT – OVR NR – POS NR

You can’t teach size. Bert is a walk-on who can contribute, but not this year. Preseason workouts showed that Bert needs to work on his physical condition before he’s ready for the Division I level.

Reloaded? Highlanders have questions to answer heading into new season

Last year saw total domination of the Big South Conference by the Radford Highlanders, winning both the regular season title and the conference tournament title and earning a 14th seed in the NCAA Tournament. Though the Highlanders lost to the Michigan Wolverines in thrilling fashion, excitement surrounds the program, especially after head coach Jason Whitt turned down an offer from Boston University to remain the head coach of the Highlanders.

With the excitement of last season come the unknowns of a new season. Gone from last year’s team is nearly half of the scoring production, including the top two scorers from last year (Jamar Jenkins and Kenny Thomas). Which begs the question…who will pick up the void in the scoring department? The preseason may have answered those questions.

“I’m excited about this year’s team,” Whitt said. “We have guys returning from last season who are ready to step up and be leaders on this squad, and we have a couple of new guys who are ready to contribute now.”

        Starters

What will help ease the transition is the return of senior point guard Amir Johnson (7.8ppg, 4.2apg). Many feel a fractured ankle midway through the year curtailed his season a bit, but his scoring production and shooting improved upon his sophomore season. In the three exhibition games, Johnson averaged 13 points and seven assists per game, showing that he may have finally found that balance between scoring and running the offense.

Junior guard Chris McEachin (7.8ppg, 2.0 rpg) enters the starting lineup after two seasons coming off the bench for the Highlanders. McEachin showed last season that he was more than just a spot up three pointer shooter, flashing the ability to get into the lane last season. Make no mistake though, McEachin is the best three point shooter on the team, and now that he is in the starting lineup, the Highlanders are expecting an increase in his scoring production. McEachin struggled with his shot in the exhibition slate a bit, but Coach Whitt went with his body of work as a whole in naming him a starter, replacing the graduated Kenny Thomas.

Junior swingman Reggie Neskovic (JUCO transfer) showed in the exhibition slate that he needed no adjustment period between junior college and the Division I level. Neskovic averaged 13 points and nine boards per game in the exhibition slate, and Whitt awarded him the starting spot that was left vacant by the graduation of Jamar Jenkins. Neskovic is the total package at the small forward position, being able to drive, shoot, defend and rebound.

Sophomore forward Chad Crumbley (4.5ppg, 4.6rpg) struggled a bit in his freshman season as he adjusted to Division I basketball, but played an important role down the stretch for the Highlanders. Crumbley may be the most improved player on the team, as his play during the exhibition slate caused Whitt to replace Alex Gynes with Crumbley in the starting lineup. Crumbley averaged 13 points and nine boards per game in the exhibition slate, and has even improved on his perimeter game. After being named to the Big South All-Freshman team last season, expect Crumbley to break out this season.

Junior forward Nick McFarlin (5.0ppg, 8.0rpg) had improvements across the board his sophomore season and if the exhibition slate is any indication, he’s ready to make the next step. McFarlin averaged a double-double in the three games and has become the motor player for Coach Whitt. He may not be the most talented, but the two-year starter has the attention of his teammates.

        Reserves – Guards

Freshman swingman Simon Lambert (** #143 SF) has a three point stroke that nearly matches McEachin and nearly played his way into the starting lineup for the Highlanders, averaging nine points a game in the exhibition slate. He’ll be one of the first guys off the bench. Redshirt junior Phillip Martin (redshirt) sat out last season, but will be looking to make an impact off the bench. Sophomore guard Darek Carrington (2.7ppg, 2.1apg) was initially looked to be the starting point guard and moving Amir Johnson to offguard, but he still needs to cut down on the turnovers before this offense can be handed over to him. Redshirt freshman Darrall Garza (redshirt), redshirt junior Regis Cobb (redshirt), sophomore Kasib Gill (1.4ppg 0.6rpg), and sophomore guard Dale Fameni (JUCO) will look for minutes in a crowded rotation.

        Reserves – Forwards
Junior Alex Gynes (6.4ppg, 6.4rpg) has been busted down to the bench with the emergence of Chad Crumbley, but will still garner significant minutes. And with his ability to hit the open three (36.6% from three in his career), Whitt has even been experimenting with playing him in the three spot when he decides to go with a big lineup. Sophomore Ije Stefanov (1.9ppg, 2.1rpg), senior Joey Lynch-Flohr (0.9ppg, 2.4rpg), and freshman Bert Benjamin (* NR) add depth and size to the front line.

Coach Whitt's Take: I was mostly pleased with our performance. Their huge front line really limited what we could do in the paint, as the nine blocked shots would attest. We did let them back in the game and cut it to two points, but we was able to outlast them. We get Colorado State tomorrow night, so we're in for another tough game. But that's the whole point of the out of conference schedule...toughen you up for the conference slate.

              Radford wins Hangar Challenge
              Highlanders outlast Colorado State 82-80

Amir Johnson scored 15 points and dished out eight assists as the Radford Highlanders held off a strong second half challenge from the Colorado State Rams en-route to a 82-80 victory to win the Hangar Challenge.

"It's always nice to win one of these little preseason tournaments," Coach Jason Whitt said. "You get to see teams you don't normally get to play and it's big to get a win over a major conference team like Colorado State."

For the second straight night, the Highlanders had a letdown in the second half, blowing a 14-point lead midway through the second half. After the Rams cut it to two, Chad Crumbley hit a big three from the right wing with three minutes to go to put an end to the run.

"That's a shot that he would've turned down last season," Whitt said. "He's really worked on his perimeter game this summer and it's showing."

The Highlanders had four players in double-figures, led by Chris McEachin's game-high 25 points. Nick McFarlin recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Crumbley chipped in with 11 points.

The Rams had three players in double-figures, led by Jesse Woodard with 19 points. Darrall Salow added 15 points. Andre McFarland came off the bench to record 14 points.

                Second half collapse dooms Radford
Florida International sweeps away Highlanders 82-62.

For a third straight game, the Highlanders had a poor second half showing. This time, they couldn't survive. Sophomore guard Dawud Samuels scored a career-high 25 points as the Florida International Golden Panthers defeated the Radford Highlanders 82-62 in the first round of the CBE Classic.

"It's never good when a kid goes for a career high against you," said Jason Whitt. "It's really bad when two kids go for career highs against you."

In addition to Samuels, junior guard Josue Soto also had a career high 19 points.

"Soto is probably one of the quickest guards in America," said Whitt. "He continually broke us down with dribble penetration and the inside-outside game between him and Samuels was just working today. We had no answer for it."

The Highlanders were led by Chris McEachin, who had 20 points, but 18 of them came in the first half.

"I knew this was going to be a rough game despite us leading in the first half because Chris single-handedly kept us in the game. There was too much standing around on offense. Once FIU adjusted and did a better job of denying Chris the ball, nobody else stepped up and a twenty point loss is the result."

Notes: Up next for the Highlanders will be the Cal State-Bakersfield Roadrunners (1-1) in the consolation bracket of the CBE Classic. The Roadrunners were defeated by Northwestern 85-74. Reggie Neskovic is still listed as day-to-day due to a sprained ankle. Simon Lambert will continue to start in his place.

                  Radford blows by Roadrunners
Highlanders start on 10-0 run and never look back.

Junior swingman Chris McEachin scored 15 points to lead the Highlanders in a 71-57 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in the consolation bracket of the CBE Classic.

The Highlanders (3-1) jumped out to a 10-0 lead to open the game and led the entire way. The Roadrunners closed it to four midway through the second half, but the Highlanders used a 7-0 run to push the lead back into double-digits and the Roadrunners never got closer.

Sophomore swingman Martin Giddens and sophomore center Demond Prince led the Roadrunners with 16 points a piece.

Notes: Junior swingman Reggie Neskovic finally showed that he may be getting over his sprained ankle. Neskovic scored 13 points off the bench for the Highlanders and Coach Whitt said barring any setbacks in practice, Neskovic would start their next game. Speaking of next game, the Highlanders will play Delaware (0-1) in their home opener.

                      Delaware three-point barrage sinks Radford

Junior guard Alphonso Dawson scored a career-high 28-points, including a career-high six three pointers, as the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens defeated the Radford Highlanders 68-59.

The Highlanders were able to get as close as two points on several occasions, but Delaware used hot shooting from downtown to answer every Radford challenge.

Junior guard Chris McEachin led the Highlanders with 12 points.

Notes: Freshman guard Simon Lambert left the game early in the second half with a minor knee injury. He is day-to-day.

Coach Whitt's Take: There's just something about Radford and Michigan that makes for an exciting basketball game. Unfortunately for us tonight, we just didn't hit enough shots. We cut it to five a couple times late, but just couldn't get any closer. This week has proven that we have some chemistry issues and we are going to look to iron those out, possibly with a lineup change.

Coach Whitt's Take: Not one of our best games, but a win is a win. I was pleased with the intensity we showed on the defensive end in holding Colgate to such a low shooting percentage. Unfortunately, we didn't come out of the game unscathed. Reggie Neskovic sprained his knee and he's day to day. We'll go with Simon Lambert in the starting lineup for the time being.
