Nuggets shut Thunder down again, force game 6

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma City Thunder looked forward to advancing to the Western Conference Finals for the second straight year, and do it in front of their home fans.

The Denver Nuggets had other ideas.

After losing the first three games of the series the Nuggets have turned things around by winning two straight and will be back on their home court for game six, thanks to a 87-78 win in Oklahoma City.

Danilo Gallinari was limited with foul trouble in the Nuggets game 4 win, but he made up for it by scoring a team high 28 points and blocking three shots in game five. Al Harrington came off the bench to record a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

"Gallo had a bunch of big 3s, Arron started knocking down 3s," Harrington said. "When they do that, it stretches the court, so it's easier to attack the basket. When they knock down shots, they make us all lot better."

Denver took control of the game in the first quarter, and though the Thunder were able to able to close the gap to one at halftime, the Nuggets used a strong third quarter to pull back ahead and ultimately get the win.

It seems as though all the injuries OKC has suffered this post-season are finally catching up with them.

Kevin Durant still managed to score 33 points but it took him 32 shots to do so. Russell Westbrook had his 2nd straight poor game with 14 points on 4-13 shooting.

Denver coach George Karl has done a great job making adjustments since game three by having his defense focus on shutting down paint and forcing the Thunder to beat with jump-shots.

Oklahoma City has not shot the ball particularly well in these playoffs, and hit just 3 of 16 three point shots in game 5.

The Thunder will have to put the series away on the Nuggets home court or face the possibility of being the first team to lose after leading a series 3-0 in game 7.

Harden's 23 off the bench lifts Thunder to Conference Finals

DENVER -- The Denver Nuggets were less than two minutes away from forcing a game 7 in the against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Having held off the hard charging Thunder all night, the Nuggets were ahead by three points late in fourth quarter of game six. But in a flash James Harden tied the score with a long three-pointer, then stole the ball from Arron Afflalo and raced down court to slam the ball home and put Oklahoma City in the lead for the first time since game 4 of the series.

After a Danilo Gallinari missed a three that would put Denver back in front, Kevin Durant, who struggled all game but was especially ineffective late, missed both his free throws to leave the door open for the Nuggets to tie or win the came in the final 10 seconds.

Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson drove the lane and was swarmed by the Thunder defense. He kicked the ball out to Nene for a wide open 18 footer that clanked off the side of the rim. Russell Westbrook snagged the rebound and sank to free throws to give OKC win 94-90.

Harden finished the game with 23 points and 3 steals to lift his team to the conference finals for the second straight year.

"I just tried to seize the moment and take advantage of it," Harden said, "I was able to get to some good spots and fortunately I made some shots."

Durant shot just 7 of 21 from the field and 4 of 9 from the free throw line to finish the game with 23 points.

Despite struggling once again, Westbrook flirted with another triple-double, he ended the game with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists and the clutch free throws to put the game on ice.

Gallinari, Afflalo, and Al Harrington tied for a team high 16 points for the Nuggets in the heartbreaking loss.

"We didn't close out this game, we didn't close out Game 1 and ... they're both very difficult to swallow right now," Denver coach George Karl said. "We will somewhere in the next week or wake up and realize that we had a hell of a season."

Oklahoma City will have to overcome their playoff demons from last season as they will once again face the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals. Dallas knocked the Lakers in 5 games and will be looking to return to the finals and defend their title.

Dallas dominates game one to take control of series

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Thunder finished the regular season with the best record in the NBA. In game one of the Conference Finals the Dallas Mavericks made it clear that they are the still the top team in the West.

The Mavericks controlled the action from the opening tip, raining down three's and stifling the Thunder offense holding them to just 35% shooting.

While many of the Dallas players wear championship rings from last season, two new additions came off the bench to key a 102-74 rout of Oklahoma City on their home floor.

Vince Carter led the team with 24 points and Lamar Odom added 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists in the blow-out victory.

Dallas mainstays Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry scored 21 and 13 points respectively.

No Thunder had what could be considered a 'good game', Kevin Durant's shooting slump carried over from the Nuggets series as he hit just 8 of his 22 shot attempts for 18 points.

"We can't get discouraged," said Durant after the game.

Oklahoma City will have a shot at redemption when the series resumes on Sunday.

Harden's buzzer beater evens series at one game apiece

OKLAHOMA CITY -- With 4.4 seconds left in game two of the Western Conference Finals and the score tied at 89-89, the Dallas Mavericks were determined to keep Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant from beating them.

With Dallas focusing on Durant, James Harden was able to slip free of Jason Terry. He took two dribbles towards the baseline and fired a 20 foot jumper that hit nothing but net as the horn sounded giving the Thunder a 91-89 victory and tied the series at 1-1.

Whatever Oklahoma City head coach Scott Brooks said to at halftime, it did the trick. The Thunder trailed by 10 at the break and were shooting just 36%.

While Harden hit the game winner, it was Russell Westbrook who keyed the comeback by picking the pocket of Jason Kidd on consecutive trips and raced down court to finish the plays with jaw-dropping dunks.

Durant led the Thunder in scoring with 28 points, Westbrook added 19 and Harden finished with 14 off the bench. Serge Ibaka recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

"It was tremendous," said Harden, after the game, "Serge made some great plays. Russell made some big shots. Kevin did what he did. Perk played some great defense. I just tried to find my spots and make shots as well."

Dirk Nowitzki led the six Dallas players who scored in double figures with 23 points. Shawn Marion added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

"It should be fun back at our place," Dirk said.

"Sometimes you win sometimes you lose," Carlisle said. "You've got to take it like a man."

The series now shifts to Dallas for the next games starting with game three Tuesday night.
