Coach Beilein Introductory Interview

Coach Beilein, how does the William & Mary roster compare to what you had at Fairfield?

It is vastly different. At Fairfield I ran an offense with one man in the middle surrounded by 4 perimeter players. I played 10 guys every game. Here, I only have 10 guys on the roster, and 5 of them are 6-11 or bigger! It will no doubt have an impact on how this team looks on the court.

What do you know about your new players?

Cody Lang is a big body and a talented player. He came to W&M as the #3 ranked center recruit in the country. Lang is a big guy that likes to play inside. KJ Minnifield is another big guy who likes to play inside. Cortez Bryant is another big guy who likes to play inside. Dom Davis is another big guy who likes to play inside. Needless to say, this team is a bit different than what I had at Fairfield.

Coach Beilein, what drew you to William & Mary?

First was the institution itself. It is a beautiful school in a beautiful state. I also know the student body is excited about athletics. I see us building a very competitive program here at William & Mary.

Anything else make William & Mary appealing to you?

Yes. William & Mary has never made the NCAA Tournament.

What are your goals at William & Mary?

To make the NCAA tournament. To win the CAA. But, most of all, to turn these basketball players into upstanding young men.

I had a lot of fun with Fairfield, the team was beginning to look like what I wanted near the end of this last season. Deki Joneliunas was a stretch 4 before last year becoming a stretch 5. Yorel Hawkins was a super-athletic 4 that could exploit mismatches. Jason Kyle was the designated gunner. JW Jack was the only real disappointment, as the 5-star struggled more than anyone else. Brennan Barlow was a string bean point guard that used his length on defense.

Starting over at W&M will be quite different as you will be able to see in my roster preview.

William & Mary Season 5 Roster Breakdown

Chris Turner will have to do a lot for our team. We only have 3 guards on the roster, and Turner will need to be relied upon for most of our perimeter scoring. He's not the quickest guy around, but he is probably our best shooter from the outside. Simeon Diawara is in an interesting spot. He's a true freshman and he looks to be our starting point guard. He's quick as lightning, I just hope he understands what we are trying to do on offense. Tron Barlett knows his way around campus, which is good.

We only have 3 guards on our roster, and we also only list 3 forwards. Dominic Dillon would be a center at most schools, but here he will play forward. He is strongest on defense and on the glass, and his offensive game is a work in progress. Bam Gatling is by far the best athlete on the team. He is the real slasher that we are looking for. Hakim Allen likes to play defense. That's kinda weird, but I'll take it.

Cody Lang is the best big man I have ever coached. He uses his body very well and has great touch around the rim. KJ Minnifield will likely start as well, he's almost as big as Lang and likes to live on the left block. If we put one of those guys on each block, I think we will be okay. Cortex Braxton is another wide body that should be able to give us a rebounding advantage on our opposition. John Bryant is nice to have around because he lets us practice 5 on 5.
