We really have an interesting mix of new and old on the team this season. The backcourt is definitely in the new category. Three freshmen and one sophomore. E.F. Hopes is a real strong guard that knows how to play the game. Jarrett Rhodes shoots it better than just about anyone on the team. Simeon Diawara has invaluable experience of running the offense as a freshmen. Damon Dobbins is flexible enough to play the 1 or the 2.

We only list three players in the frontcourt because we still somehow have 4 centers on the roster. Bam Gatling is a guy that is super athletic for a 3, and may even play some stretch 4 in the future. Hakim Allen is the best ball pressure guy we have on defense. Dusan Vrzina can light up the scoreboard, but he needs to learn that there is a defensive end to the game as well.

Cody Lang is pretty much the best player in school history. The only thing he has left to do is lead the team to the Big Dance. KJ Minnifield is sometimes overlooked but may be even a better rebounder than Lang. Dominic Dillon is easily the fastest of the bigs. Scott Rucker knows how to set a mean screen.

KJ Minnifield Forced to Retire After Injury

William & Mary announced today that C KJ Minnifield has retired from basketball. The 6-11 senior was injured while playing intramural wiffleball. A wicked knuckleball pitcher, Minnifield required Tommy John surgery to attempt to fix strained tendons in his arm. The procedure resulted in nerve damage, and Minnifield will not be cleared to continue his basketball career.

"I have no regrets," Minnifield said in a statement. "I feel bad for my basketball teammates, but I know my wiffleball teammates wanted me to leave it all on the field."

The Beilein Mold: The 1

Patrick Beilein has a system. His offense looks to space the floor with multiple three point shooters. His defense looks to create long passing lanes through the 1-2-1-1 full court and 1-3-1 half court defenses. Beilein has specifics he looks for in recruits, and they may be different from other coaches. That being said, let's see what Beilein looks for in a point guard.

Offense: The 1, like in most offenses, is responsible to bringing the ball up the floor and setting up the offense. After initiating the play, the 1 is primarily responsible to corner three point shooting and pick and roll with the 5. Since Beilein often goes with a taller 1 than most other teams, if there is a distinct mismatch, Beilein will post his 1. In fact, other than the 5, the 1 gets the most post up opportunities in Patrick Beilein's Chin Offense.

Defense: The 1 is positioned between the opponent's foul line and half court in the 1-2-1-1 press. His more important job, however, is at the top of the 1-3-1 half court. Because of this, Beilein looks for taller players that are more likely to get deflects and harass the opponent into turnovers in the half court.

Old School Prototype: Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway, Memphis State

Hardaway was one of the most unique players of his era, or any era. At a lanky 6-7 with point guard skills, Hardaway was a matchup nightmare for opponents. While his shooting was not the best (at Memphis State he shot 33% and 36% from 3 in two seasons), when coupled with his special ability to lead the fast break and his specialized post up game, Hardaway is tailor made to run the Beilein offense. With his size, Hardaway would also prove to be a defensive pest at the top of the 1-3-1.

New School Prototype: D'Angelo Russell, Ohio State

In his one year at Ohio State, Russell showed an extremely well-rounded offensive game. The ability to score from in close, mid-range, and deep always keeps a defense off balance. While not the quickest player around, Russell's feel for the game allows him to create space when he needs it. He is an exceptional shooter, posting a 45% shooting percentage as well as 41% from 3. What really sets Russell apart, however, is his passing ability and vision. As difficult as it is for a Wolverine fan to say, his spectacular passing, size, and ability to fill it up make him an ideal candidate for the Chin offense.

Almost a big win over UVA, looks like so far this season whoever wins the 3-point battle takes the W. Lang is a beast though, always fun to have at least one 7-foot guy on the roster.

Recruiting size like Cody Lang has never been one of my priorities, but I lucked out when he was already at W&M when I came here. He is definitely the best player I have ever played with and might be Beilein's first NBA player.
