Unfortunate result, but a great season nonetheless! It would have been nice to at least have gotten to the second round, but that's pretty cool to get William & Mary their first NCAA Tournament appearance! It's hard to believe they've never made it in before.

Hometown: Memphis, TN
Ranking: 3 Star 32 POS 181 OVR

Hometown: Baltimore, MD
Ranking: 3 Star 43 POS 113 OVR

Name: Nic Garlepp
Position: SF
Height: 6-5
Weight: 217 lbs
Hometown: New Zealand
Ranking: 3 Star
Notes: Known as the Kiwi Assassin. Has two brothers that are 6-9 so still may have room to grow. Writes Haikus in his spare time. Injury history likely scared some teams away.

Season outlook: This is a team that finally got a taste of the NCAA Tournament last year. However, the loss of Mid-Major POY and NBA draft pick Cody Lang is huge. Yet the loss of such a program legend could be overcome by Coach Beilein being able to play more to his style. Pace and space and pressure defense is now in full effect. Should be a fun ride.
Some of the next few seasons will be reported in a little bit of fast forward in an effort to catch up to where I am in the gameplay.Comment

Dusan Vrzina leaves to join a team in Serbia
Vrzina did not quite know what to expect when he arrived in Virginia. One thing he expected was a paycheck. It wasn't until Vrzina arrived on campus that he learned the NCAA only allowed amateur players. Dusan thought he would play one season at William & Mary and then weigh his options. Vrzina was left with the difficult decision of if he wanted to play for William & Mary for free or earn money in Europe.
Vrzina signed with Partizan Belgrade in the locker room following the NCAA tournament loss to Kent State.Comment

Beilein suspended Morrissette for the season. Beilein accepted a job at W&M after the year, and Morrissette was allowed to rejoin Fairfield. "I guess he makes better decisions now," Beilein said after the game. "I'm proud of him. He has a bright future ahead of him, whether it be in basketball or piloting hot air balloons."

Re: Like Father, Like Son: MBFranchise's CH2K8 Legacy
The Beilein Mold: The 2
Patrick Beilein has a system. His offense looks to space the floor with multiple three point shooters. His defense looks to create long passing lanes through the 1-2-1-1 full court and 1-3-1 half court defenses. Beilein has specifics he looks for in recruits, and they may be different from other coaches. That being said, let's see what Beilein looks for in a shooting guard.
Offense: The 2 starts on the left wing in most of Beilein's sets. His primary responsibility is to space the floor through the threat of the three point shot. In fact, shooting is the preferred trait of a Beilein 2, coveted over playmaking, defense, ballhandling, or even size and athleticism. While the 2 will occasionally get involved in the ball screen game, he is much more likely to have the majority of his shot attempts come from behind the three point line.
Defense: With such a high priority placed on shooting from range, it could be said that defense is secondary when recruiting for a 2 in Beilein's system. This philosophical approach could lead a cynic to suggest that Beilein attempts to "hide" his 2 as best he can on defense. The 2 lines up at halfcourt in the 1-2-1-1 diamond press, serving mostly as damage control should the press be broken. The 2 lines up on the wing in the halfcourt 1-3-1 so he does not have to cover as much ground as the other positions. Also, if he gets beat, he always has help behind him. Like I said, shooting before defense at this position.
Old School Prototype: Trajan Langdon, Duke
I am by no means a Duke fan, but I do have a soft spot for the Alaskan Assassin. Langdon provided great range for the late 90s Blue Devils. Langdon shot 40% from 3 each season in Durham, culminating in a senior season when he made 44.1% of his triples on his way to scoring 17.3 points per game. Averaging 3.1 made 3s per game, it is clear why Langdon was on the floor. For his career, he made 281 2-point field goals and 342 3-point field goals. To top it off, he averaged under 2 assists per game. Not known for his athleticism or any semblance of lockdown defense, Langdon lived up to his nickname as a cold-blooded sniper from downtown.
Highlights (Mute the mixtapes!)
New School Prototype: Stephen Curry, Davidson
You knew it had to be Curry, right? Now, this isn't the world-destroying, ballhandling wizard/MVP of the current Warriors, but Curry was pretty good at Davidson, too. He actually played off the ball his first two seasons in a role similar to how Beilein envisions his 2 playing. Curry averaged over 10 3-point attempts per game as a sophomore and made 43.9% of them, leading his team to the Elite 8 in the process. He made at least 122 threes in each of his three seasons, shooting 41.2% from behind the line for his career. Okay, okay, let's get to the highlights...

What Rutgers Wants to Do: Rutgers is a very balanced team across the board, offensively, defensively, rebounding and shooting. Not surprisingly, they have several players capable of playing well enough to take over a game. The Scarlet Knights are at their best, however, when PG Kory Spears has the ball in his hands. The heady senior averages 5.9 assists per game.
What William & Mary Wants to Do: For once, W&M has a size advantage this season. It will remind some fans of the Cody Lang/KJ Minnifield days. Rutgers has no regulars over 6-7, so there may be plenty of room to operate inside for Tribe pivot men Dominic Dillon and Elijah Pittman.
Prediction: The Tribe pressure doesn't rattle Rutgers' upperclassmen, and the Scarlet Knights' depth leads to an upset victory.

What Illinois Wants to Do: Illinois was Big Ten regular season champs for a reason. They start 4 seniors and one junior, and each of them is very good. The inside 1-2 punch of Hickman and Lavender is difficult for any team to deal with, especially so for a small ball lineup like those featured by William & Mary. While Illinois does have nagging injuries to Dumont and Avery, this team has the talent to remind fans of the Flying Illini teams of the 1980s.
What William & Mary Wants to Do: Fans of Patrick Beilein's teams are starting to know what to expect. Using space on the floor, both offensively and defensively. Relying upon strong outside shooting and a scramble kind of defense. More often than not, come March, this approach has yielded positive results.
Prediction: While this might appear to be a mismatch, looking at each team's per game averages shows how evenly matched these teams really are. The means this game may come down to everyone's favorite game-changer, the three point shot. The team that makes more triples wins.
