Re: "A Look in My Eyes" - Journey Of 5'4" Guard Michael Kane

    April 16th, 2017

My alarm blasted sound waves throughout my room as I skyrocketed out of my bed. "What the f***!" I yelled as I smashed the off button. It took a minute to refresh my brain in preparation of today . . . This was the next day after I announced my college commitment so I was sure I would be both praised and also bashed about my decision by friends and spectators. I didn't care, Ohio State is where I wanted to spend my college days at and I believed I made the correct decision and I wasn't going to let anybody tell me different.

I grabbed the Ohio State leathermen jacket from my closet, some jeans, and the Ohio State edition LeBron's, making my it obvious of my selection to anybody who missed it last night. Without further adieu, I headed downstairs meeting up with Trent and dad who scanned the daily newspaper, I squinted at the front cover from the staircase and quickly noticed that my face was the main feature of the paper.

"Morning guys," I said as I approached them in the kitchen. "Dad what are they saying about me in there?"

They both responded morning simultaneously and dad addressed my question, "They're just analyzing you're decision," He said as he continued reading. "They're saying it was bad decision on your part but Ohio State is winning big with the recruitment . . . Don't let it get to you however, you went with you're heart and things will definitely go well for you at State."

"How are guys in Ohio complaining about me going to Ohio State. I would think that they would route for me because I'm staying loyal to the state. I don't get it . . ."

"Me neither, life is confusing at times but like I said, just don't let it get to you."

"Yeah I know." I grabbed the cereal box from the counter along with the milk from the refrigerator and prepared the quick breakfast before I would take off for another day at school.

    ----Later, at school----

Me and Trent arrived at the school on time with a few minutes to spare. The buses were starting to unload as I came from the front entrance. Immediately I saw banners hanging at the front entrance saying 'Congratulations Michael Kane!'. It made me shine a bright smile, I truly loved the support the administration gave me here at Polk. I would miss them when I moved to Columbus . . .

"Alright see you later Trent." I parted ways with my brother and headed over towards my locker where all the people were entering the building from the buses. My name, Ohio State, and good choice was repetitively chanted by the a lot of the people, I put my fist in the air to show the appreciation and got my stuff and walked to my longtime girlfriend, Natalie, who was crowded by her friends near her locker. We talked on the phone late at night yesterday about our future, the problem was that she was staying here in Dayton for college while I was leaving the city. That was upsetting for both of us but nothing was interfering with my basketball dreams, nothing. I was always told to start what I finished and this was a prime example. But still, she was special to me.

As I approached her her friends said hi to me and fled away from her giving us isolation to talk. I knew they'd be right back as soon as I left asking her what just happened then 10 minutes later the whole school would know our situation. "So, Natalie, what's up."

"Nothing, I guess," She says as she hangs her jacket up on the hook. "Still mad about you saying Ohio State but it's whatever I guess."

"Why are you so mad . . ." I ask as my voice gets a little louder. "It's only about about an hour away from here, it's not over. Besides you support me as an athlete, what do you think I could possibly accomplish going to Dayton besides my dad being able to coach me?"

"Just go . . . We can talk about this later, I'm not really in the mood." She then walks off towards class and I try to stop her but she continues.

"Looks like you f***ed up!" I looked over my shoulder and see Anton and a couple guys from the team laughing out loud at me. "Shut up."

"It's just the simple female problems, she'll get over it, besides Natalie has the looks and all but if you ever seen the girls over at Ohio State I'm pretty sure you're not even gonna think about turning back!" Anton says while the rest of them laugh.

"Well . . . It's not really always about the looks at times. Me and Natalie have been dating for like 10 months and I really don't want to end it any time soon but with how this is going I doubt it will continue."

"Like Anton said, you bout to go to Ohio State and I can assure you that all the girls will be all over you." Lance, our forward, said as he patted my back. "But if you want to think of it in this depressing a** way then at least you got like 4 months to spend time with her."

"True. I'm about to get to class, see y'all at lunch."

"Alright and don't let this f*** your game up either." Anton said as we all seperated. "We got the tourney this weekend so be ready." I put up an ok symbol and walked to my first period class seconds before the bell sounded and I took a seat at my assigned seat. I was glad I was doing exceptionally well in school, I had started to take it a lot more seriously every since I really started thinking what I wanted to do outside of my hoops dreams. I wanted to go into engineering as my college major. SATS were coming soon as well, I was sure I would pass it without ease . . . I was going to finish on top of my class, I was putting in work at the AAU level, and I had some guys who really supported me, I guess you could say everything was going great for me except my nerve wrecking situation with Natalie.

Dad helped me get my tie on correctly as as I finished my outfit for the night. Today was finally prom and I would be graduating in exactly 21 days. I would finally be out of high school and set to take Ohio State by storm. Natalie was my prom date. She was not longer mad at me as she once was and I was very happy that I finally had our situation resolved thanks to the help from my old man. She finally understood my ambitions as an athlete, we don't exactly know if our relationship will carry over once we part ways to separate universities but we're enjoying each moment we get to spend with each other.

"Alright you're just about ready," dad says as he steps back. "Let me get some pictures right quick before your limo gets here." Dad pulls out his phone and and I smile briefly before I hear the limo pulling up.

"Alright thanks for the help dad, I'll see you later." I start to walk towards the door.

"Alright, have a good time, I'm proud of ya."

"Yup." I continue out to the limo which I agreed to share with both Anton, Hassan, and their prom dates. The limo's final destination was to my date, Natalie. We all chatted away as a group before we arrived to Natalie's housing subdivision. I stepped out the limo and walked up her porch and rang the doorbell. It wasn't long before the door swung open and there was Natalie gracing my eyes. I was speechless . . .

"Hey Michael." She says, me still speechless at this point.

". . . Hey sorry about that haha," I say as I recover from the stunning looks of the women who was my prom date. "You look amazing."

"Thanks, you look great too," she says with a smile. "Come in?"

I nod and I enter her house; in there is both Mr and Mrs Kiser [Her parents] talking on the sofa. I greet them both and they request to take pictures of me and Natalie together. Her dad is a huge Ohio State fan so I had to inform him that the limo was waiting after he started boosting about how I'd love the program.

"Ok, you guys have a good time at prom," her mom says as we head out the door, Mr. Kiser then adds that we should be back by 1:00 A.M.

1 O'clock, that'd give us time for prom and the after parties . . . I thought to myself, tonight was going to be a good one.

                  May 9th, 2017

We all arrived to the prom a little late because all our trips and delays but it was alright because everything was just starting up. I chilled with Natalie and friends while the fast music played. I looked around at the hung up backboards and then to the 2014 and 2017 championship banners that hung up on the wall . . . I sighed, I really couldn't believe that time really flew by that fast.

"So where's the after parties about to be?" I ask, breaking a silence.

"Nick rented this big a** house for two days," Hassan says. "I'm in, how about yall?"

Everybody says how they're going and I say yes after getting the confirmation look from Natalie. I had the feeling this one was going to be crazy and I was all in for it . . . Eventually we all arose from the circular table and went over to the dance floor and started to dance with our dates. They were still playing the fast music so everyone was just having fun at the time but when the slow music tuned in everything got serious and I started to embrace the moment with Natalie. She leaned against me and I held her by the waist while she held my shoulders.

The music continued and we moved with it until it began to come to an end, we both stared each other right in the eye and at that moment I leaned in for a kiss. It was a long and very meaningful one and when we released lips we smiled at each other and then immediately we heard everyone around us clapping and cheering us on.

"PROM KING AND QUEEN!" They rooted continuously until Mrs. Bass voiced the microphone on the stage podium.

"The 2017 Prom Queen is . . . Natalie Kiser!" The crowd went wild as Natalie walked up to the stage. "And the Prom King goes to Michael Kane!" I met up with Mrs. Bass and Natalie at the front stage and I received my crown while Natalie got her tiara. We celebrated and shared another kiss, this time not as long. Everybody continued to cheer for us while the faster music once again played in the background. The event was wrapping up and it was finally time to get to the after parties!

                  ----Later at the House----

It was around 11:45 last time I check my phone and now we were at Nick's rented house. I could tell it was packed because I could hear everybody from the street. I knocked on the door along with my group and Nick opened it within a 10 seconds. We all stepped in and I could already see people getting wasted. I jump into the action without hesitation.

"This sh*t is even better than Spring Break!" I yell after taking yet another shot of the whiskey.

"MICHAEL, MICHAEL, MICHAEL!" The crowd frantic yells cheering for me to continue . . .

                  ----The Next Day----

I wake up with a massive headache and I discover that I'm in a bed alone. I rub my hands down my face trying to overcome the terrible pain . . . It felt like a living hell, I then realize I have no clothes on.

I jumped to obvious conclusions quick, I just hoped I played my cards right and wouldn't be a father in college.

Will be pretty long just to make it realistic but this post isn't very important.

                    May 30th, 2017

Today was finally the day . . . We could all hear the crowd roaring in excitement as we awaited the signal to enter the gym. Today was officially the graduation date for the class of 2017! We waited a few more minutes for Mr. Richardson to wrap up his speech and when it was over Mrs. Bass told us to start moving into the gym in a single filed line. I was 4th in the entire line and as we reached the gym and the crowd continued their cheering. I looked up to the crowd and saw a humongous chunk of family members who came to share the moment with me - I smiled and waved at them.

I honorably took my stage seat that only 20 other of my classmates received; this signified I would be graduating as an honor student. I took that in with great pride as I waited until my peers filled in the remaining seats throughout the gymnasium while our school band played in background. The gym was sent into silence as our main principal Mr. Richardson took center stage.

"Good Evening Honored Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.

A graduation ceremony is always such a special occasion - the culmination of years of hard work; the actualization of goals attained and the acknowledgement of successes achieved. So, it is only fitting that tonight we commemorate the road that we have all traveled together these last few years.

It has been a journey that started with tentative steps perhaps, but one that has taken us to remarkable heights. We have encountered some trials and tribulations along the way...soldiered on and come out the stronger for them. We have experienced exceptional moments, magical moments and created memories that will be fondly remembered in the years ahead.

Henry Ford wisely said, "Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress and working together is success." As we look back over the last few years, certainly there was a beginning, and thankfully there was also progress and yes - undeniably we have been successful!

But let's begin where all good stories begin - at the beginning!

Who can forget when we all came together for the first time - nervous young students in the freshmen class, proud parents, the Board of Governors and a dedicated staff body. What a commencement ceremony it was, signaling what would be the start of wonderful things to come. Yes, we all came together with a common purpose in mind - to encourage and develop lifelong learning in the young Ladies and Gentlemen who sit before us this evening.

Steadfast, resolute and determined we all kept together. Day-by-day we focused on our goal, keeping together and working together. We faced some incredible and memorable moments - moments that we chose to use as stepping stone as we tenaciously pursued our common goals. And what progress we made, as just a few of the following highlights attest to:

Our successful basketball team, our great debating club, the list goes on and on.

The end result Ladies and Gentlemen of our coming together, keeping together and working together, in spite of the obstacles that we may have faced along the way... that end result is the Graduating Class of 2017. My, how proud we are of the success that they have made with the opportunities that they were offered. Congratulations, we are inordinately proud of you all!

You are ready, willing and more than able to grasp the torch that we bestow upon you- yours is the future and on you the world will come to depend.

May your years ahead continue to be characterized by empathy, compassion, objectivity and a willingness to take risks.

May you always lead by example and work hard and play straight.

May your successes be many and your tribulations are few and far between.

We wish you everything that you so richly deserve in the years ahead - it has been an honor and a privilege watching your progress and success!"

"It is now my honor to recognize the candidates for the academics honor diploma as well as the technical honor diploma. Each of these graduates will receive a diploma with this designation in scribe.

I stand up and exit the stage and head backstage along with the others.

                    ----Later----

"Sashi Singh, graduating with a 4.2."

"Skylar Rennoll, graduating with a 3.9."

"Michael Kane, graduating with a 4.0." I stand up and go through the line of people congratulating me as I received my diploma.

The crowd clapped for a minute or so then Mr. Bass welcomed our student president Micah Law who would also be chiming in a speech he's prepared.

"Friends, professors, administrators, and parents, welcome. We are graduating.
Can you believe it? Four years ago, most of us walked into these halls as nervous as we were the first day of school. We were the freshmen, the low men on the totem pole. Now, those same four years later, we’re leaving the school behind to a whole new crop of people, most of whom were just as nervous as we were when we arrived.
It has been a long four years and short for years. Long because of all the drama and bad homework, the boring readings and early-morning extra credit projects, and all the other little pratfalls that hit us in high school. Short because of the lifelong friendships, the lasting memories, and the truly interesting and amazing things we learned between the occasional bits of drudgery.

Good or bad, long or short, I will always remember this place. While I’m thrilled to be our valedictorian, I can’t say I’ve spent as many hours as some of us have between these halls: Our teachers, of course, spend an inhuman amount of time here, and many students do as well. Most of them even do it of their own choosing. I came by to get a book I forgot last night around 8 p.m. and found Rachel Earl, student head of the graduation planning committee, still here putting crepe paper on chairs and laying out programs in each and every seat. That’s dedication.

It takes that kind of teamwork to survive anywhere in life, I’ve found. I know my experience is limited, but every problem I’ve overcome has been because someone has been there to help me. My support net ranged (and still ranges) from my parents to my friends to my teachers, depending on the kind of trouble I’ve had and its severity.

This isn’t to say I’ve been a troublemaker—I only got sent to the office twice, and one of those times was a misunderstanding—but even for me, a relatively quiet student, a lot of help has been needed to get me through at times. This is where our high school truly excels, I think.
What’s next? I will be going to college, as will many of my classmates. More of us yet will go to various branches of the armed forces to help keep our country safe home and abroad. Others may get right to work, or even take a year or more off to decide what they want to do. Leaving high school is such a brutal transition, as Principal Bass put it, that I don’t know what the world has in store for any of us.

I do know how I’ll deal with those life events, though: by using the skills and info I’ve picked up here. It all comes down to help, and I’ve got plenty of people to thank for that: parents, of course, teachers, friends... I guess that means the biggest thing I learned in high school is to lean on others when needed.

There’s another, more important, side to that idea as well, and it’s the one piece of advice I’d like to give you as we get ready to cross this stage for the last time: Make sure you’re around when other people need someone to lean on. They’ll thank you for it. Heck, one of them might even mention you in his valedictorian speech.
Congratulations, Class of 2017! We did it!"

Why are the All-Ohio Black and Dayton nets listed twice? Are they fielding to teams?

The Nets have two teams and All-Ohio was by mistake, one team is the 'black' and the other is the 'elite'. Gotta fix that, thanks

                            Day 1 Recap

                            Top Teams

NW Ohio Basketball Club - Circled around 7' bigman Stephen Ellis, it's no wonder why the NW Club is not only performing as a top team in this tourney but also in the nation. Ellis racked two +20 point performance thus far and came up huge in today's final game against King James Shooting Stars which was sent into overtime. He finished with 24 points, 14 rebounds, and played every minute in the game. Providing help beyond Ellis was Hosea Andreas who's made a name for himself based on his sharpshooting abilities. He set a nice box score in the overtime game as well with a total of 15 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and went a perfect 3-3 beyond the arc.

Ohio Midwest Express - OME battled it out in the first round with the (21-7) Dayton Nets, their star studded duo of Michael Kane and Anton Malcom came through as they defeated the Nets 74-72 in the last second game. The next round the Express took on All-Ohio's Black team which featured a big three consisting on; Illinois commit Russell Saunders, Virginia commit Jack Pulley, and Michigan commit Malik Taylor. It was pretty much a one sided affair as OME worked as a complete unit to take out All-Ohio 72-64. Four players from OME scored in double digits and Michael Kane lead them with 27 points.

Ohio Ballstars - The Ballstars battled some tough competition in the opening day of the state tourney but at the end of day one they left knowing they'd be playing in the semi finals the next day. In round #1 they eliminated the sharpshooting Hidden Gems ball club. They were lead by the guard-forward play of Ambrose Mose and Zane Daniel who combined for a total of 30 points off 57% shooting. In the second round they were against the second All-Ohio team participating in the event and they took this one easily as Ambrose once again showcased his scoring abilities and reserve bigman Edward Bryan came into the game and made his presence known in his short period of playing time, he tallied up 15 points in just 12 minutes.

                              June 1st, 2017

Both Anton and NWOB's Stephen Ellis set-up at the tip off as they await for the ball to be thrown in the air. I take a look at Stephen, the guy was so tall . . . I could already tell that if Anton didn't come through on defense then this game would be all hell for us. The ball goes up and I'm surprised to see that the ball is tipped my way.

"Set up floppy base." I say as I approach the halfcourt line. I watch as Ramiro flies through a series of screens set by Anton and Tyree, he comes out near the arc while his defender is struggling to maneuver around - I pass him the ball and he drills the mid-range jumper.

"Good play!" Coach says from the sidelines. I nod at him and pick up on my man. He's about 5'6 but I heard he had a clip so I'd have to play good defense today. They throw the ball straight into the post to Stephen and he gets Anton in the air with an up and under move for an easy score. It looked like I was right, I thought as I walked towards the baseline to receive the inbound pass.

Stephen Ellis killed us the entire first quarter as he scored their first eight points. Then at that point their entire team starting to get involved as they burned us from both the perimeter and from the painted area.

Our reserves stood up as our starting unit took a seat on the benches after the first quarter buzzer sounded, we were waiting for coach to instruct us on how to get ourselves back into the game.

"Come on guys, we've got to play with more energy . . . We're not a bad basketball team, at all, but that's what it looks like out there," Coach looks around at the team then at me. "Michael simply cannot carry us through this entire thing so I'm going to need you all to step up and knock down some shots for us. Now I want Alberto in for Michael, and Lawerence in for Tyree. Get out there."

I sat on the bench confused on why I was benched when we were down but I didn't say a word. I just watched as Damien took the floor and went on to bury two quick jumpers. I was happy to see that they were making defensive stops and creating offensive momentum of their own.

With around two minutes left in the second, I was finally subbed back into the game. Coach said I couldn't carry us through this game but I knew I had to because all my teammates seemed to have disappeared when I needed them the most so from there I knew the game was all mine. I tried to draw fouls whenever I saw the opportunity and I wasn't at all afraid to take the jumper when I saw it.

It wasn't long until my heroic scoring streak got us within 2 points from NWOB in the fourth. The game was going back in forth with us coming close then them building their lead back but I stayed with full energy the entire game however tragically when the final minute of the game came around, my teammates weren't hitting their shots I had set them up with and I wasn't hitting mine either.

The game ended with the score being 69-62 with us on the loosing side. I had 33 points but I knew it meant nothing since we lost the game, especially since this was the State Tourney. Oh well, I thought as I put my sweatpants on over my shorts.

"You can't be shooting that much, Mike." Coach Ruckman, our assistant, tells me as I sit turned around in the stands watching the other game that's going on across the building.

"Yep . . ." I say, still fully disagreeing with his statement. I went 12-23 and that is barely different from any of my past box scores. My teammates lost this one for us, I gave that game my all.

Been out a lot during my spring break but I will return when school starts back next week. Since MK will be starting a new chapter, if anybody has any suggestions with this dynasty, I'll be happy to here.
