Jazz Come Up Short In Brooklyn

    Tuesday, November 5th, 2013

    New York City -
The young, brash Utah Jazz battled the veteran Brooklyn Nets to the wire, but came up just short in their quest for their first road victory of the season.

Only one player for Utah played 30 minutes or more (Hayward), and despite out-rebounding the Nets 51 to 49, the Jazz found themselves on the short end of the stick at the end of the 4th quarter following a big Nets run. The Nets out-scored Utah 34 to 24 in the 4th quarter, and 60 to 46 in the second half altogether.

The Jazz take on the Celtics in Boston tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m., then travel to Chicago on Friday to take on the Bulls. They close out the road trip in Toronto on Saturday night.

Despite the excellent play of Enes Kanter and Alec Burks, the Jazz will be sticking with the veteran duo of Richard Jefferson and Marvin Williams at the forward positions tonight against the Celtics. However, I would expect the Jazz to give Kanter and Burks heavy minutes tonight.

Favors' Big Game Not Enough For Utah

            Wednesday, November 6th, 2013

            Boston -
The Utah Jazz lost their fourth-straight game tonight, as they fell to the Celtics in Boston. Avery Bradley proved to be the difference maker for the Celtics, as he finished with 32 points and 2 steals. Jared Sullinger finished with 12 and 12, and Rajon Rondo had 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 14 assists.

For Utah, the 5 young core pieces played significant minutes. Derrick Favors had a big game, finishing with 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Trey Burke had his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. Gordon Hayward played his former Butler University coach, Brad Stevens, for the first time. Here's what Hayward had to say about Stevens:

"Well, I love the guy. The first thing I did when I got to the arena was talk to him. We go back, man. You think about the things we were able to accomplish at Butler, and the things he was able to do after I left, and you have to think that he'll be a successful coach here in Boston for a long time."

Utah struggled with turnovers tonight, committing 12 of them to Boston's 5, and despite shooting a higher percentage from the field, the Jazz weren't able to come away with the win. They shot just 56% from the free throw line and 30% from three-point land.

Utah is off to Chicago tonight for a game against the Bulls on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Bulls have yet to lose this season, as they are 4-0.

Burks' Career-High 38 Points Leads The Jazz Over Chicago

                Friday, November 8th, 2013

                Chicago -
Utah Jazz reserve Alec Burks had a career-night for the Jazz tonight in Chicago, as he had 38 points coming off the bench. Burks was just unstoppable, mostly in the 2nd half, and was just knocking down shot after shot.

The Bulls had no answer for Burks, who was given a season-high 32 minutes. Gordon Hayward struggled with foul trouble, thus getting Burks on the court more, but they were most effective when both were on the court simultaneously. Hayward finished with a nice statline himself, with 24 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.

In Enes Kanter's first start of the season, he played very well, as he finished with 14 points and 8 boards. He was able to get to the free throw line 8 times, making 6 of his shots. Derrick Favors was one point and one rebound away from a double-double, and Trey Burke shot the ball well, but finished with just 9 points and 5 assists.

The Jazz finish out their road trip against Toronto tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.

Hayward's Big Night Leads Jazz Past Raptors

                    Saturday, November 9th, 2013

                    Toronto -
Gordon Hayward has been the consistent leader for the Jazz so far in this season, and tonight was no different. Hayward put up a very nice statline (26 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block, 10/15 shooting), and was the catalyst for the Jazz offense.

Hayward's interview after the game in the locker room:

Reporter: "You guys rebounded the ball really well tonight, and really, all throughout this season so far. What's the cause for your guys' dominance on the boards?"

Hayward: "Well it goes back to Derrick and Enes. Those two are the foundation of our team. They're so good defensively, and offensively they get after it on the boards and get us plenty of second chances."

Reporter: "You had a nice night shooting the ball. How high was your confidence tonight?"

Hayward: "Well, I didn't really think about my confidence when I was out there. I was just thinking about making the shot and getting points on the board and making plays. I guess you could say I had a pretty high confidence in my jumpshot, but I didn't want to rely on it all game."
Alec Burks made his first start of the season tonight, and though he struggled shooting from the field, he played well defensively with his fellow young teammates.

Two Jazz players had double-doubles on the night (Kanter and Favors), and Utah had a season-high 27 assists. Utah heads home for three games, starting Monday against the Nuggets.

Good job Amir Johnson, that whopping three rebounds with 29 minutes of action.

Having Hayward at the three gives you three guys who can go get rebounds a plenty, despite giving up a bit in size with his lanky body. Even though Burks getting the starting nod hurts your bench, it's for the better of the team.

Burks is an underrated rebounder out on the wing, too.

My bench is really weak right now, but I like Marvin Williams on offense as that stretch 4. Gobert really stepped up against Toronto, too. I might have to start giving him more minutes instead of Evans.

As for Amir Johnson... I don't even know lol. Valunciunas is out with a broken foot, so they were forced to play Patterson for 43 minutes. And he couldn't buy a bucket to save his life.

Jazz Slip Past 5-0 Nuggets, Improve to .500

                          Monday, November 11th, 2013

                          Salt Lake City -
This is what we all thought would happen... right? The Jazz are now at .500 on the season with a 4-4 record, and have won 3 straight games, with each team being over .500. Utah is playing great team basketball and is getting contributions from guys all over the roster, and tonight proves it.

Brandon Rush was the leading scorer for the Jazz despite putting in just 11 minutes. In those 11 minutes, Rush broke out for 17 points and shot 70% from the floor. Rudy Gobert, another Jazz reserve, finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds, along with 2 blocks.

The starting lineup produced as well, with Enes Kanter and Gordon Hayward putting in 15 points each, Alec Burks putting in 14 points, and Derrick Favors and Trey Burke both finished with 9 points. Denver's Randy Foye was on a tear tonight, scoring 26 points, with 20 of those points coming in the second half. Foye played with the Jazz for one season last year.

Utah has two more home games; the 5-2 New Orleans Pelicans, and the slumping 3-5 San Antonio Spurs.

Jazz Fall At Home To Pelicans

                            Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

Salt Lake City - The Utah Jazz have certainly seen their ups and downs so far in the season, and tonight was definitely a down. The Pelicans came into Energy Solutions Arena and just beat the Jazz down in the second half with no problems. The star of the Pelicans, Anthony Davis, even fouled out late in the 3rd quarter and the Pels still made it non-competitive.

That isn't to say that there wasn't any positives for the Jazz, though. Enes Kanter flat-out dominated New Orleans, finishing with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block, but came up short-handed at the free throw line, shooting 2 for 6. Gordon Hayward filled up the stat sheet with 17 points, 5 boards, 6 dimes, a steal, and 2 blocks, but also committed 4 turnovers.

Hayward wasn't the only Jazz player reckless with the ball, as the Jazz committed an astounding 24 turnovers. Tonight also marks just the second time that Utah has been out-rebounded.

One has to wonder how long Utah can handle playing with this bench, as they only managed to score 14 points. Fourteen!!! The Jazz starters accounted for 75 of the team's 89 points. That's 84% of Utah's points. That should probably improve if Utah has any hope of making a miraculous run for the playoffs.

Utah takes on the San Antonio Spurs in Salt Lake City on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Spurs are off to a slow start with a 4-5 record, but have won 3 straight games.

Who Is "the Guy" in Utah?

The Utah Jazz have gotten off to a surprising 4-5 start and are currently tied for 10th in the tough Western conference. Many attribute the team's success to the "Fab Five" of Gordon Hayward, Trey Burke, Alec Burks, Enes Kanter, and Derrick Favors, as they should. All five of them have recently been starting together, and all five of them are former lottery picks for the Jazz (with the exclusion of Favors, who was drafted to New Jersey). Both Kanter and Favors are former 3rd overall picks, Hayward and Burke are both former 9th overall picks, and Burks was the 12th overall pick in 2011 draft.

But many of the Jazz faithful are debating over who is the guy that we must build around. Is it Gordon Hayward, the crafty swingman out of Butler? Alec Burks, the athletic guard from Colorado? The Turkish Enes Kanter? Michigan's Trey Burke? Or Georgia Tech alum Derrick Favors? Some feel that it might actually be none of them, surprisingly. With the strong draft class on its way this summer, and the Jazz being projected to finish near the bottom of the league, some fans feel that the Jazz can get a bonafide number one option in the draft. With prospects like Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, Dante Exum, Julius Randle, and many others, there is plenty of talent in the draft that could take the Jazz to the next level.

But as for right now, who should Utah be prioritizing to lock down? Derrick Favors signed a contract this past summer that lasts until 2017, so he's already locked down. But what about restricted free agent Gordon Hayward? Hayward and the Jazz failed to sign a contract before the deadline, so Gordon will hit the restricted free agent market this summer. Can the Jazz afford to bring him back if he's offered a big contract by another team?

Gordon is the leading scorer for the Jazz this season at 19.7 points per game, but Alec Burks is not far behind with 17.7 points per game. Kanter is 3rd with 13.4 PPG, followed by Burke with 12.3, and Favors with 10.9. So all of the Fab Five is averaging over 10 points a game, which is pretty solid. But who will emerge as the go-to-scorer for Utah?

Jazz Beat Down San Antonio At Home

                                Friday, November 15th, 2013

                                Salt Lake City -
The Jazz had no problem with the reigning Western Conference Champions tonight, as they drubbed the San Antonio Spurs 109 to 93.

The duo of Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors was dominant for Utah, as they combined for 41 points and 21 rebounds on the night. Gordon Hayward contributed with a near triple-double with 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. Alec Burks pitched in with 15 points, 3 boards, and 5 assists, while the rookie Trey Burke was one assist away from a double-double with 14 and 9.

San Antonio was without Kawhi Leonard, who suffered a broken foot last week. Manu Ginobili struggled in the starting lineup as his replacement, shooting just 4 for 13.

This is a big win for the Jazz, as not only are they .500 now, but they now have a ton of confidence in themselves. Kanter and Favors played very well together and used each other's strengths to benefit themselves. Gordon was a great facilitator today, and Trey was feeling the three-ball tonight, making 4 of his 7 attempts from three-point land.

Utah takes on Golden State in Oakland tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
