    BIG SOUTH TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINAL ROUND

    @

    (7)Charleston Southern (11-17, 5-9) @ (2)Virginia Military Institute (17-10, 9-5)
    CSU Fieldhouse
    March 4, 2008

It was a fantastic back and forth first half that ended all square at 24-24. Then the offense of VMI (17-10, 9-5) took over as they outscored Charleston Southern (11-17, 5-9) 40-30 over the final 20 minutes to come away with the 64-54 victory.

In order for CSU to pull of the upset their guards needed to play exactly the way they ended the season. That just never happened tonight. The two guards Jeremy Sexton and Sheldon Strickland had been averaging double digits in scoring and have been shooting a solid percentage combined for just 12 points on 5-19 shooting. In fact, two players that have been steadily improving throughout the season, Kenny Mitchell and Cedrick Bowen had the best stats for the Buccaneers. Mitchell finished as the lone Buccaneer in double digits with 11 points and 4 rebounds, while Bowen scored 8 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds.

For the Keydets it was the forwards and center that took over. Forwards Michael Sparks and Stan Okoye led the team in scoring and D.J. Covington played stellar defense from the center position. Okoye recorded a double-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals, Sparks scored 15 points, and Covington finished with 6 points, 14 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks.

For Charleston Southern their season ends at 11-17 overall and 5-9 in the Big South. For VMI they move on to the semifinals to play #6 seeded High Point who upset #3 Liberty 77-71.

            Love the brackets.

Tough break losing in the 1st Round. Already looking forward to next year

Tough loss in the first round, not the way you wanted the season to end I'm sure but at least now you'll have the chance to bring in some recruits and build your imprint on the school.

Also to your comment earlier, the reason why you were home is because the game always makes the team on the top half of the matchup as the home team, even when they aren't the higher seed. I've simmed through CH2k8 enough to notice.

Sounds like it was a good game. Everyone catches a tough break every now and then. For me, the first few years of legacy are always really tough until you can bring in some decent players. Can't wait to see who the Cinderellas are going to be for the NCAA tournament. I still think it would be awesome to see Pitt take the title!

                          I haven't made the NIT in any season I've played....although I don't think I've ever been over .500!!!

It's a solid enough first season. I'll take it. I'm not sure I have anything brewing on the recruiting end...I'm just going to hope the young guys step up their game for next year!

Interesting. I did notice that both teams had the 6th man meter on and that their fans were noticeably louder than mine...probably because they had more to cheer for!

It was a good game. Tight first half that was very back and forth, then they went on a tear. They couldn't miss and I couldn't score. I'm going to post the selection sunday show this evening. I just got home and will just orient myself around the other conferences for a bit before getting to work! Best of luck to Pitt!

Ya win some, ya lose some as some people say....but Coach Pfeifer would probably say ya win some, ya lose a lot! I'll be looking for a monster recruiting class for the next 2 years hopefully. This next class isn't much at all.

Hey Dark Knight...Pitt lost to Cincinnati in the Big East Semifinals 83-82. Ashton Gibbs dropped 23, but it wasn't enough. Cincinnati ended up beating West Virginia 70-67 to get the automatic bid after being a bubble team.
