Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell, Take Two (CH 2K8)

Mike Dement Resigns, James Frizzell in at UNC Greensboro

Mike Dement announced his resignation as head coach of UNC Greensboro's basketball program this afternoon, citing health concerns, just three weeks before the start of the 2007-2008 season. Dement was hired two years ago by the Spartans and has previously had coaching stops at Cornell, UNC Greensboro (when they were in the Big South), and Southern Methodist (where he resigned in 2006).

Dement led the Spartans to a 16-14 record last season, but this year's team faces a lot of adversity as not many players return from last year's squad. This year's team will be fortunate to win more than 10 games.

James Frizzell has been announced as Dement's successor. The 25-year old is a recent graduate of UNCG, where he received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He has coached in the high school ranks in North Carolina for several years, where he has had good success, guiding his team as far as the state quarterfinals last season.

Nevertheless, he is a bit of an unknown and the hiring was a surprising one.

Frizzell's high school teams typically were motion offenses that relied on inside post play and a lot of three-point shooting.

"I enjoyed this university when I attended it," beamed Frizzell in his introductory press conference. "I'm proud to be a Spartan once again. There's not much time before we kick off the season in a few weeks, so I hope to get right to work later this evening with the team. I can't wait to meet the team."

The Spartans open the season on November 9th at Georgia Tech.

Again, this will not replace my other career legacy where I am currently at WVU. I just wanted to do something fresh along with it where I am back in a small conference and make it more challenging, in general, with the sliders I now use and the recruiting restrictions I will put in place.

      Gameplay House Rules:

      - I only play as one player on defense and do not switch mid-possession. I alternate position with each position. Thus, one possession #1, I will play as PG, then possession #2 as SG, possession #3 as SF, possession #4 as PF, possession #5 as C, possession #6 as PG, etc....

      - I tend to mostly pull back on fast breaks. It is very easy to throw a bounce pass through the defense unrealistically going towards the hoop in this game, which leads to too many layups/dunks.

      - I do not use the 'B' crossover button, as I feel like this is too easy as to be cheesy. I do use the 'Y' crossover button, however.

      - I only do the turnaround post move once per half. I feel like it is overpowered and too easy to get easy layups and/or dunks off of it.

      Legacy House Rules:

      - NO international recruits. I feel like snatching 3* international recruits as a small school is just too easy and I don't want to take advantage of that like I did at Princeton, which I thought was unfortunate, in hindsight.

      - Coaching ratings upgrades will be evenly spread across the board. This is important as I think most of us tend to pour our coaching points into charisma, which is perfectly sensible as I think it is definitely the most important coaching rating (second is probably teaching). However, I think it can make things too easy as the initial five coaching attribute points can upgrade charisma to a B+ from the start and from there it may only take one season to reach an A+ and be able to outrecruit everyone. Thus, in this case, every single attribute category must be upgraded before I can increase the next level of attributes. So, for example, before I can upgrade charisma to a C+, all of my other attributes must be at a C (and this goes for all attribute categories).

2007-2008 UNC Greensboro Individual Player Preview

                Starters:

PG #10 Daniel Oliver 5'10 175 (Hialeah, HI) 61 overall FR

Daniel Oliver is a promising point guard out of Hawaii, who has a knack for penetrating towards the rim and plays solid defense. His outside shot could use some work, but he's not a bad shooter, either. His experience is an issue and he will have a lot of pressure on him as he is the only true point guard on the roster, but that should only increase his potential going forward.

SG #3 Landon Clement 6'1 185 (Durham, NC) 62 overall FR

Landon Clement was an excellent shooter in high school and is a home-state kid from the Triangle with a lot of potential as a freshman. He doesn't have much size to play the '2' guard, but he makes up for it in other ways.

SG #15 Kendall Toney 6'3 203 (Raleigh, NC) 62 overall SO

Kendall Toney is another good shooter and is another home-state kid hailing from the Triangle. Toney will play at the '3' guard this season as the Spartans do not have a true small forward on the roster. He is a little small to play the '3' guard, but he's not tremendously undersized and should be okay. He will be depended on to make open three-point looks.

PF #34 Michael Mitchell 6'7 205 (Cary, NC) 60 overall JR

Michael Mitchell is yet another play from the Triangle, though he is a walk-on Junior. Mitchell is a bit undersized at power forward, but he should be serviceable. He doesn't have a lot of post moves, but his lack of size allows him to sometimes put the ball on the floor effectively and drive by larger, less mobile defenders. However, he has been ineffective at rebounding over the course of his career, which is concerning.

PF #2 Darrius Sellers 6'7 215 (Columbus, GA) 60 overall FR

Darrius Sellers is a freshman from Columbus, GA who shows great potential going forward and is the best big man on the roster right now as a freshman. He's undersized for the '5', but he's there out of necessity. Sellers is able to put the ball on the floor, like Mitchell, but also has some post moves. He's also a good rebounder.

                Bench:

SG #20 Kevin Oleksiak 6'4 190 (Philadelphia, PA) 63 overall SR

Kevin Oleksiak is the only senior on the team and, despite coming off the bench, one of the team's best players. He's not a spectacular shooter, but he can put the ball on the floor with the best of them and is the best playmaker on the team. As the team's sixth man, he will be charged with bringing an offensive spark off the bench and will play backup at the '2' and the '3'.

SG #4 Mikko Koivisto 6'4 195 (Finland) 59 overall SO

Mikko Koivisto is a sophomore out of Finland. Koivisto is an excellent shooter with good size and ball-handling ability. He will likely backup Oliver at point guard and will also see minutes at shooting guard and small forward.

PF #55 DeAngelo Jackson 6'8 215 (Durham, NC) 58 overall FR

DeAngelo Jackson is a promising freshman out of the Triangle with good size and quickness. He looks to have a bright future in Greensboro, but for now his role will be as the first big off the bench.

PF #24 Ben Stywall 6'5 210 (Greensboro, NC) 57 overall SO

Ben Stywall is a local product and has decent potential, but his lack of size really hampers him. His shooting and handling ability is too poor for him to have a shot at small forward, as well. Nevertheless, he may be able to snag some spot minutes here and there this season.

PF #44 Pete Brown 6'6 234 (Birmingham, AL) 52 overall SO

Pete Brown is an Alabama product and a sophomore out of Birmingham. He isn't tall, but he's a big guy that can take up space in the paint. Nevertheless, he doesn't have much to offer out on the floor and likely won't see much playing time this year, aside from garbage minutes.

                C #32 Sam Mason 6'10 230 (Charlotte, NC) 54 overall FR

Sam Mason is a promising freshman out of Charlotte with great length and size. He doesn't have much to offer offensively, which hurts his case for extended playing time, but he is an excellent rebounder and will get minutes at center this season.

Wow, with that roster, I am not sure Brown and Stywall would've made the cut. I think I would've gone with a 9 man roster and probably a 8 man rotation, freeing up a few more scholarships to bring in some help right away.

Sorry, I just got back from San Francisco. A bit of an unexpected trip.

I just wanted some more depth. I finally was able to get injury sliders that actually result in injuries, which is something that was lagging for (literally) decades in my other legacy. So, maybe I will actually see some injuries this season and depth will actually matter for once.

I already have four scholarships available, anyways. I'm not sure I'd be able to do much more with a few more. I like this team. There's a lot of young (relative) talent.

The game/roster set I have lists him as from Montenegro, but you are absolutely right.

Koivisto was before my time at UNCG, so I am not familiar with him. I will correct that.
