UNC Greensboro (2-4) vs. Virginia Tech (4-3)
    Cassell Coliseum
    Blacksburg, VA
    December 4th, 2007

A.D. Vassallo scored 23 points to lead Virginia Tech as the Hokies (4-3) defeated non-conference opponent foe UNC Greensboro this evening 69-44.

Darrion Pellum added 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists for the Hokies while freshman Terrell Bell scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds from off the bench.

Virginia Tech led by 10 points at halftime, but blew the game open in the second half as the outscored the Spartans 41-26 in the second period.

UNC Greensboro was without starting center Darrius Sellers, who will likely be out until early January with a severe high ankle sprain. Freshman Sam Mason started in his place and did an admirable job on the boards with nine rebounds, but was a non-factor offensively as he scored just one point on 0/4 shooting.

Sophomore Kendall Toney scored 12 points to lead UNCG in scoring. Sophomore Finn Mikko Kolvisto scored 11 points and hit three three-pointers from off the bench.

Next, UNCG will travel to Spartanburg, SC to take on Wofford in both teams' Southern Conference opener.

      vs.
UNC Greensboro (2-5) vs. Wofford (1-4)
      Benjamin Johnson Arena
      Spartanburg, SC
      December 8th, 2007

Shane Nichols scored 18 points and Wofford held off visiting UNC Greensboro 62-61 to win their first game of the season in both teams' conference opener this evening in Spartanburg.

Freshman forward Tim Johnson also added 13 points for the Terriers (1-4, 1-0) to round out the double-digit scorers for the Terriers.

Tonight's game was close down the stretch as UNC Greensboro (2-5, 0-1) had a couple chances to score the go-ahead basket in the final minute. Michael Mitchell missed a point-blank layup that would have given the Spartans a 63-62 lead with a minute remaining. Likewise, the Spartans got one last chance in the closing seconds, but Mikko Koivisto was forced to hoist up a contested three-pointer that didn't find the bottom of the iron.

Nevertheless, Koivisto did have a nice outing for UNCG as he scored 11 points and hit three shots from beyond the arc. Michael Mitchell also scored 11. Senior guard Kevin Oleksiak led the Spartans in scoring with 16 points and four rebounds.

UNC Greensboro has six days off before taking on Furman in the Spartans' conference home-opener next Saturday. The Spartans will then head out of conference for their final three non-conference games of the regular season before hitting Southern Conference play for the final 18 games of the regular season, beginning with Georgia State on January 5th.

              December 15th, 2007

UNC Greensboro (3-5, 1-1) handed Furman (5-3, 2-1) their first loss of the season this evening as the Spartans blew out Furman 74-54 in their home opener in Greensboro.

Kendall Toney hit four three-pointers and scored 18 points to lead the Spartans. Kevin Oleksiak was huge inside the arc as he was effective slashing to the basket and at shooting mid-range jump shots as he scored 17 points. Mikko Koivisto also had another big game as he shot a perfect 3/3 from beyond the arc and totaled 14 points and five assists.

As a team, UNCG shot 10/20 (50%) from beyond the three-point arc and also shot a perfect 50% from the floor.

Furman did not have a bad shooting outing, but they were frustrated into 14 turnovers and only made it to the free throw line eight times.

Stanley Jones led Furman in scoring with 10 points and five rebounds.

Next up for UNC Greensboro is a challenging non-conference date with Fordham in the Bronx.

Senior Bryant Dunston scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds for Fordham as the Rams blew out visiting UNC Greensboro this evening 83-55.

Marcus Stout added 15 points for the Rams (7-2) and Chris Bethel totaled 14 points and five rebounds. Brenton Butler and Mike Moore also added 14 and 13 points off the bench, respectively.

Junior Michael Mitchell was UNC Greensboro's only double-digit scorer as he scored 11 points and grabbed five boards.

Fordham led by 16 points at halftime and blew the game open in the second half. The Rams shot over 60% from the floor and were a perfect 9/9 from the free throw line. UNC Greensboro (3-6) had a serviceable shooting night, but turnovers and other mistakes plagued the team throughout the duration of the game.

Next up for UNC Greensboro is a match with in-state opponent UNC Wilmington on the road. The Seahawks are 9-2 on the season and look to be a very tough matchup for the Spartans.

Wow 36 points from the bench in your "W", then only 12 in the loss. Looks like getting production from your reserves is going to be the key to ending the year over .500. Hopefully we can see that.

By the way looks like your recruit "Dinky Woods" is leaning toward either Wake Forest or NC State in my leagcy.

Yeah, the bench is a bit of an issue. Oleksiak and Koivisto are good players who can put up points, but if one or both of them are off, it really hurts us.

Clement has really struggled this season, too. It makes me wonder whether my decision to start him instead of Oleksiak was a good move.

The lineup I close games out with is pretty fluid. Oliver always closes games, as do Mitchell and Sellers (when healthy), but any of Clement/Oleksiak/Koivisto/Toney close, depending on who is playing better in that particular game.

Haha, I love the name! Dinky Woods was a guard in my other legacy in my early years at WVU. Quite a good shooter, as I recall.

I've been away from the forums for a bit of time, so I need to catch up on other legacies (including yours).

                          December 31st, 2007

UNC Wilmington (10-2) blasted past in-state opponent UNC Greensboro (3-7) this evening 74-68 as the Seahawks continued to build on their tremendous early season success heading into Colonial Conference play.

UNC Greensboro held a 52-46 advantage with 10:30 remaining in the second half after Landon Clement hit a three-pointer, but the Seahawks struck back as they shut down the Spartans offensively for over five minutes and rocketed out to a 59-52 lead with 5:30 remaining.

Landon Clement hit another three with under 30 seconds remaining to cut the Seahawks lead to 70-68, but the Seahawks hit their free throws from there to seal the victory.

Todd Hendley used his huge size advantage down low to bully his way to 23 points and seven rebounds to lead the Seahawks. Fellow big man Vladimir Kuljanian also scored 12 points while T.J. Carter added 17. Junior point guard Marlo Davis notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists.

Landon Clement was the leading man for the Spartans with 12 points. Michael Mitchell added 11 points while Darrius Sellers played aggressively offensively coming back from injury as he made it to the free throw line 10 times and scored 10 points to go along with five boards. Kevin Oleksiak and Mikko Koivisto each added 10 from off the bench.

UNC Greensboro closes out non-conference play next week with a winnable home game against Central Arkansas.

Tough loss, but it does look like UNCG hung in there. The turnovers definitely didn't help I'm sure but to have such a good effort from behind the arc will definitely put more Ws in the column sooner or later.

Man sorry for another tough loss you are really in for a long season. Hopefully with conference play coming around something good happens.
