December 21, 2019 St. Francis at Duquesne [non-conference]

After the disappointing loss to Robert Morris, the Red Flash bounced back with a big win over Iona, outscoring them by 24 points in the second half and getting a double-double from Sophomore Muhamed Payne. However, there’s a much tougher opponent this evening: Dinko’s alma mater Duquesne University. It was a special night for him, and the university even took the time to acknowledge him and his family, thanking them for the 9 years he spent at the university playing and coaching the Dukes. Before the game he was welcomed onto the floor and recognized, where the fans and students cheered and clapped for him.

But then it was time to focus. His brother had lost by 6 to Duquesne, but it wasn’t really ever that close. He would need to play disciplined and be patient on offense to break down the 2-3 zone that they loved to play.

Patience was desperately needed by Dinko, as he watched the worst display of basketball he’s seen since coming to the United States. With 4 minutes left in the first half, his team had only scored 3 points. They had made a single three pointer. He was beside himself…how could they be playing this bad! He knew Duquesne was good, and that made him happy, but his team was not this bad.

After being down 17-0, his team managed to score 10 points, to make it 36-10 at half. There was no chance for his boys tonight, how would he salvage the 2nd half? He decided to focus on team play and building up the confidence of his big man: Zygis Keita.

Duquesne grew their lead over the 2nd half thanks to their superior toughness and finishing, but at least it wasn’t such a dire display of basketball. The Red Flash were only outscored by 9 in the 2nd, and Keita scored 22 points and was nearly unstoppable…though not as unstoppable as the Dukes were on the other end.

Not much good can be taken from a 35 point loss, but maybe Kostadin had found something to build on with Keita in the post, and at least he lost to his favorite team in the world, the beloved Duquesne Dukes. If he was going to get destroyed, he’d prefer it was to them.

December 28, 2019 Northern Colorado vs Sacramento State [Big Sky]

The last few weeks had been full of ups and downs for Oggy. He painfully lost to his brother, then saw his alma mater demolish his brother’s team the following night. He lost sharpshooter Delvon Jahnke for a month due to a fractured wrist and had to travel to Corvallis to take on Oregon State, and absolutely destroyed them by 25 points!

Conference play is kicking off and he finds his Bears sitting at 6-7. Not where he wanted to be, but there were also positive takeaways and team growth so far. He felt good about his team’s chances tonight. He was at home, Sacramento State was 1-7 and the Hornets had little height and only 1 shooter (SG Leon McDaniel). With Jahnke out, he was going to look to Donovin Mascoll to control the paint and lead this team.

It turns out Mascoll did the lead the team, but as the center of a 3-headed hydra (with Andres Swanson and Brandon North being the other two heads). After a tight game early on, the Bears burst out on a 9-0 run and never looked back. Swanson was huge as the half closed out, including a stretch where he threw down a big dunk on a breakaway, blocked a layup on the other end, and then threw down another dunk.

At half the Bears were up 40-27 and their own three-headed hydra was responsible for 38 of the team’s 40 points. The Hornets spent much of the first half doubling Donovin Mascoll, but he would regularly power through the double team or find an open teammate.

The Bears kept that 13 point lead and coasted to their first conference win under coach Ognyan, 72-59. Mascoll, North, and Swanson scored an astounding 66 of the team’s 72 points.

Brandon Stiles was the ultimate facilitator at point guard this game, getting 9 assists without taking a single shot.

            • It’s Christmas, which is always a day full of great NBA games. Here were this year’s 5 Christmas Day games.
            • Raptors 121 – Celtics 109. The Raptors forced 19 turnovers and only committed 8 to shut down Boston.
            • 76ers 113 – Bucks 111. The 76ers jumped out to an early lead and held off Giannis.
            • Warriors 141 – Rockets 115. It was a merry Christmas for Steph Curry as he dropped 47 points on 16-20 shooting.
            • Lakers 106 – Clippers 131. The Clippers had 7 players in double digits and held the Lakers’ big two to 60 combined points.
            • Nuggets 137 – Pelicans 104. Michael Porter Jr. came off the bench to lead all scorers with 30 points.

WOW, big win over Oregon State (impressive to go into hostile territory and get that), and nice win against Sacramento. Looks like the team is building confidence, they look better than their record.

The Clippers are definitely for real in the NBA, and the Warriors are not playing around, it's gonna be a three horse race out West I think between the Clippers, Lakers, and Warriors.

The Bears don't use their depth well, but it seems like they have ~4 starters who can carry the team any night (once Jahnke is back), and two of those four are underclassmen, which is good. I think what helps them the most is that they have an inside game (Mascoll), an outside game (North and Jahnke) and a slashing game (Swanson) so they should be able to make something work most games.

The Mavs are actually the sneaky contender out West. Luka Doncic is shooting 56% from three, Porzingis is scoring just under 30 a game, and they just made a trade with the Jazz (details coming in future post). The Warriors are on track for the playoffs, but will need to rely heavily on Steph.

It's been a struggle for Oggy!! Hopefully they keep improving like they have been. Could be a long season mentally, but physically very short. Here's hoping you can get some more big W's!

Dinko's guy got their a***s handed to them!
Hope that doesn't set them back too much.

Both guys need to get to work on recruiting for next year already!

If Dinko hadn't lost to his alma mater, I am sure it would have been much worse. I suppose there's something that hurts less losing to someone you love. You know he's gonna play them next year though and that game may be a bit of a measuring stick for him as a coach - can he prepare his team to play disciplined against a superior opponent? Maybe keep it to single digits the whole game?

In terms of recruiting, I'm a bit worried for both brothers. Dinko lost out on his top recruit and is likely settling for a player who is much worse. The good news is that he basically has no seniors, so he's set up well for next year.

Oggy on the other hand has gone all in on recruiting and it seems like of the 3 scholarships he has out, only 1 may sign. But that's part of coaching - several recruits have been impressed by his charisma and presentation, but their top priority was playing for a good coach, and people don't view him as a great coaching mind.

January 17, 2020 Northern Colorado at Eastern Washington [Big Sky]

It’s been 3 weeks since conference play opened with a solid 13-point victory of Sacramento State, and Oggy’s Bears have been just okay. They are 2-2 in conference play, with a loss to San Diego State sprinkled in there as well. That’s good enough to put them 4th in the Big Sky, just ahead of today’s opponent, Eastern Washington (who are 2-3 in the Big Sky). The Eagles are only 4-14 on the season, but look like a decent matchup against the Bears, especially since this game is on the road in Spokane. It’ll be especially challenging as Northern Colorado is still without senior shooting guard Delvon Jahnke, who needs another week for his wrist to heal.

The game started out back and forth, with both teams grabbing small leads but unable to pull away and it stayed that way until there were about 5 minutes left in the half. Oggy put back in a few of his starters after giving them a break, and the Bears went on a run, finishing the half up 37-28. Andres Swanson also finished the half with a flourish, hitting a running float from the free throw line right as time expired. Brandon North and Donovin Mascoll had 22 points combined at the half.

At halftime, Oggy thought back to a conversation he’d had with Dinko after his team’s blowout loss to the Red Flash. “You need to play disciplined. You are always encouraging or scolding your players, and they are up and down, hot and cold, just like you.” He wasn’t great at this, but he tried to stress smart decisions and staying in control for the second half.

It worked, or at least it seemed like it. Eastern Washington started pushing and playing up tempo, which played right into Oggy’s hands. Up tempo and high energy is Oggy’s wheelhouse and the Bears found themselves up 13 just two minutes into the half. They had broken the Eagles’ press and plan, and EWU only had 2 timeouts left with most of the half left.

It did get a bit nervy at the end though, as his players lapsed a bit mentally and EWU got to within 6 points in the last minute, but ultimately fell 76-65.

Donovin Mascoll was an absolute monster with 33 points, and Junior PF Randy Alvarez had one of his better games of the season with 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.

                          • Big 12: Texas is leading the conference at 3-0, while #10 Kansas is the only ranked team in the conference and is sitting at 3-1.

                          • SEC: Kentucky has a storied history, but is currently unranked. However, their 4-0 start to conference play puts them at the top. #23 LSU and #19 Arkansas are in 2nd place at 3-1.
                          • Other teams: Aside from Louisville, the only remaining undefeated team Is #20 TCU (16-0).

                          Around the NBA
                          • The Bucks haven’t been happy with the drop off in quality from their frontcourt this season, and unloaded Marvin Williams and Kyle Korver to the Hawks for Clint Capela and a 2nd round pick. Does this mean no more playing time for Robin Lopez? At least the brothers weren’t split up. Though Capela is not a shooter, so this will result in a clogged lane for Giannis?
                          • Perhaps the Hawks wanted better veteran leadership, or maybe they wanted another player with the initials T. Young. Either way, they unloaded 25 year-old DeAndre Bembry to the Bulls for veteran PF Thaddeus Young.
                          • Even though they are young, the Mavs chose now to capitalize on their hot start and unloaded young PF Justin Jackson (and a $12M trade exception) to the struggling Jazz for sharpshooting Joe Ingles. Ingles will slot into the SF rotation with Tim Hardaway Jr and Dorian Finney-Smith.
                          • Even without Kevin Durant, the Nets are challenging for a playoff spot in the East and have decided to part with some young talent in PF Rodions Kuruc and SG Theo Pinson in exchange for veteran big man Mike Muscala and a 2024 2nd round pick.
                          • There haven’t been many major in-season injuries, the closest so far being Buddy Hield’s broken ankle, which will see him out for about 2 months.
                          • Brandon Ingram also tore his MCL and will be out for 2 months.
                          • Joel Embiid and James Harden won the December Player of the Month awards.
                          • Rui Hachimura and Ja Morant have won the December Rookie of the Month awards.
                          • James Harden scored a season and league high 58 points against the Grizzlies on January 14.
                          • The West’s top three has remained relatively stable as the Clippers (31-11), Mavericks (30-12), and Lakers (28-13) control the conference.
                          • Out East, the Magic have fallen off a bit, down to 5th place, but the race for the top is very close as only 1 game separates the Bucks (29-14), Celtics (27-13), and Raptors (27-14).
