Everyone loves a good crossover story, right? I figured it achieves several goals:
    1) Advances my characters and stories in a creative way
    2) Makes the stories more interesting as we cross-pollinate
    3) Helps the community by raising awareness of others stories

      NBA Coaching Changes and Retirements

The offseason is a time of change, and that’s very true among the NBA coaches. This offseason, we saw two modern coaching icons retire after facing each other for the second time in four years in the NBA Finals.
      • Rick Carlisle, Mavericks– after 33 years of coaching, 1 championship and 4 finals appearances, the Dallas legend has retired. Dallas fans are sad that he left with a loss, but they will be forever grateful for 2011 and all he’s done over the past 20 years.
      • Mike Budenholzer, Bucks– The man who was derided as inflexible and unable to win in the postseason has retired after 2 titles in 4 years and 28 years in the league.

We had only 2 coaches let go this year.
      • Brett Brown, 76ers – The 76ers got progressively worse postseason results while competitors improved. Ownership decided they needed to make a change.
      • David Fizdale, Knicks– It’s been too many years with no results for the Knicks.

However, there are rumblings about 5 coaches who should consider themselves to be on the hot seat:
      • Mike D’Antoni, Brooklyn Nets
      • Melvin Hunt, Portland Trail Blazers
      • Aiden Anderson, Sacramento Kings
      • Mike Malone, Denver Nuggets
      • Doc Rivers, Los Angeles Lakers

Here are new coaches and those who were re-signed.
      • Dana Faulk, Bucks– The Nets assistant coach is the new head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.
      • Jason Kidd, Mavericks – The former Mav comes home to bring glory to Dallas as a coach.
      • Jacque Vaughn, 76ers – Vaughn is being brought in to take this team to the next level.
      • Owen Taylor, SuperSonics – The Bulls assistant and highly regarded 43 year old takes the reins in Seattle.
      • Ime Udoka, Honu – Udoka has been mentioned as a head coaching candidate for years, and the Honu take the plunge to bring in the Popovich protégé.
      • Scott Brooks, Knicks – The Knicks are hoping that the third time is the charm for the former Thunder and Wizards coach.
      • Steve Kerr, Warriors – re-signed for 4 years.
      • John Beilein, Cavaliers – re-signed for 3 years.
      • Brad Stevens, Celtics – re-signed for 4 years.
      • Erik Spoelstra, Heat – re-signed for 4 years.

We saw a number of players retire, including these 9 veterans:
      • Dwight Howard, age 37, 17 years in the league, last played for the Clippers.
      • J.J. Barea, age 39, 15 years in the league, last played for the Celtics.
      • Rajon Rondo, age 37, 15 years in the league, last played for the Magic.
      • James Johnson, age 36, 13 years in the league, last played for the Hornets.
      • Nicolas Batum, age 34, 13 years in the league, last played for the Pistons.
      • Patty Mills, age 34, 12 years in the league, last played for the Celtics.
      • DeMarre Carroll, age 36, 12 years in the league, last played for the Nuggets.
      • Boban Marjanovic, age 34, 6 years in the league, last played for the Thunder.
      • Dario Saric, age 29, 5 years in the league, last played for the Nets.

Dwight Howard was inducted into the Hall of Fame. For his career he averaged 16.4 ppg, 12.0 rpg, and 1.8 bpg. The Magic also retired his #12.

Their logo was too good to not use. It's why I had to expand before the servers shut down. Not being able to expand to Montreal was worth getting this expansion in.

Also, spoiler alert, the Honu get a talented young (fictional) player from the Celtics in the expansion draft - that post is probably coming tomorrow.

So weird. Hard to imagine another player with a career like that.

              League Meetings

The most exciting part of this year’s league meetings was the official welcoming of the Seattle SuperSonics and Hawaii Honu to the NBA. Both teams were announced at last year’s meetings but are officially joining the league this offseason and looking to build their teams into eventual contenders.

The NBA divisions will be re-aligned with 16 teams in each conference. Out West, Seattle joins the Northwest division, replacing Oklahoma City who moves to the Southwest. Hawaii joins the Pacific division. In the East, Memphis has moved to the Southeast division, while Washington joins the Atlantic division, and the Central division remains unchanged.

With those two teams added, there was a spirited discussion about further expanding the NBA. Would the owners want 34 or 36 teams? Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Vancouver, Baltimore, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Louisville and Montreal were all mentioned, with some people throwing out themes and pairs: two Missouri teams, two rust belt teams, two Canadian teams, etc. However, nothing concrete was decided as the owners want to see how these expansions progress before considering more teams.

In less exciting news, no rule changes were passed but a few were considered: a possession arrow instead of a jump ball and abolishing the salary cap. Neither was passed.

2023 NBA Expansion Draft: Seattle and Hawaii

Today is the day that Seattle and Hawaii can feel like they are officially teams. Within the hour, both teams will have legal rosters and payrolls and could theoretically begin competing in professional games.

The SuperSonics will pick first and the draft follows a snake format, so Hawaii will have picks 2 & 3, Seattle 4&5 and so on. Very little has leaked out about both team’s strategies, but there is some speculation that is gaining steam.

                • The Sonics were very inspired by the initial and ongoing success of the Seattle Sounders soccer team. The Sounders expanded 14 years ago and have made the playoffs every year. One thing to keep an eye out for is a desire to compete and make the playoffs in year 1.
                • The Honu want to build a roster that resonates with the locals and SE Asia. Look for them to find AAPI or international players and young talent.

                Brant Toole (PG, DAL, 77 ovr, age 24) – 3 years, $2M
                8

                Mason Delgado (PG, POR, 72 ovr, age 19) – 2 years, $2M
                11
                Darryl Sparrow (SG, MIL, 73 ovr, age 25) – 1 year, $2.5M
                Henrik Johansson (C, DEN, 76 ovr, age 24) – 2 years, $1M
                12
                Louie Umeh (PG, BKN, 73 ovr, age 23) – 3 years, $1.5M
                Will Barton (SF, SAC, 76 ovr, age 32) – 2 years, $5.5M
                13
                Yakhouba Pemigar (PF, SA, 73 ovr, age 21) – 1 year, $3.5M
                Willy Hernangomez (C, LAL, 75 ovr, age 29) – 1 year, $2M
                14
                De’Anthony Melton (SG, MIA, 78 ovr, age 25) – 2 years, $9M
                Louis Zaharias (C, GS, 72 ovr, age 23) – 1 year $2.5M

Very different draft strategies showed up for those teams. With the draft over, here’s a few interesting notes.
                • The Sonics look like they are going to heavily rely on veteran savvy and hope that Rose, Lowry, Whiteside, and Finney-Smith can be great leaders in the locker room.
                • Seattle only has $3 million in cap room left, and will need to look to the draft or trades to meaningfully shake up their roster.
                • Hawaii drafted youth and talent early and has several unproven but intriguing players in Rashad Konare (61 games played), Henrik Johansson (0 games played), Mason Delgado (0 games played), Russell Frye (0 games played), Brant Toole (0 games played), Marquel Clemmons (0 games played), and Uros Dragic (0 games played).
                • To supplement that young roster, the Honu have $50 million in cap space that they can use to lure a free agent this summer or make a big trade.
                • The Honu are rumored to be targeting 1 or more Asian-American players, perhaps Orlando’s Dave Tran (PF, 79 ovr).
                • If the season started tomorrow, here’s what the starting fives may look like:
                  • Honu: Dragic, Ennis, Konare, Robinson, Theis
                  • SuperSonics: Lowry, Rose, Finney-Smith, Bell, Whiteside

Those rosters aren't too bad for expansion teams. Memphis in the East is the most interesting to me though. Looking forward to see how this goes.

Yeah, I think the teams are reasonable. They won't be good, but there's a foundation there. The Honu have so much cap space, I'll be interested to see what they do with it.

Also, there is reasonable talent in this draft and the teams will end up with the 5th or 6th picks and probably get a solid player to add.

I will happily indulge that. Next season I'll do a spotlight on Konare, but here are some things to tide you over:

I have a gif created of him from summer league, so you'll see that in the future. I wish I had his college stats, but I don't have any to refer to
