    Saint Francis 2023-24 Season Preview

Last season was a tough for Dinko, but somehow he still led the Red Flash to the NCAA tournament. He was relying on 5 new players and they had to ramp up on higher level basketball and learning how to play with each other. That makes three straight conference tournament titles but no regular season titles for the Dragomirov brother. With a rotation that includes no seniors but only two freshman his team should no longer have growing pains and is likely one of the more talented teams in the NEC.

    Projected Lineup

There may be some changes like we saw last year, but Dinko has decided to slot 6’7” freshman Erwin Willingham at point, leaving Tanoris Houston as a rotation option off the bench. This makes the lineup the same except for point guard, but there is a deeper and more experienced bench this year. St. Francis will go 9 deep, with a balanced bench of a shooter (Valdez), backup PG (Houston), big man (Holman), and athletic wing Fernandez Markovic growing better after a redshirt season.

That leaves 5 players outside of the rotation: both junior PF Taj Hailey and senior C Von Felder were redshirted and the deep bench features familiar names PG Cassiano Djordjevic, 7’3” Geary Doss, and sophomore Tron Torbert.

Dinko now has two sharpshooters in Quick and Valdez, a solid and flexible guard in Willingham, and several players who are talented frontcourt players. Depending on how things go, Dinko could go with a small-ball lineup of a Willingham/Houston, Valdez, Quick, Diakite, and Thompson…though it’s not that small as four of the players are between 6’7” and 6’9”.

    Season Projection
The Red Flash will be in stiff competition for the regular season title with the Long Island Blackbirds, with both teams looking significantly more talented than the rest of the conference. Now that Central Connecticut State has seen their core mostly graduate, the conference can easily be categorized into four tiers:

Good teams: Long Island and St. Francis
Competent teams: Wagner, Sacred Heart, and Central Connecticut State
Bad teams with a star player: Fairleigh Dickinson and Mount St. Mary’s
Bad teams: Monmouth, Robert Morris, Quinnipiac, and Fake Francis

Long Island features four very good starters in freshman Wilson Barrow (SG, 72 ovr), senior Germain Dalgarn (SF, 72 ovr), sophomore Dallas Perry (PF, 75 ovr), and junior Jeremie Lalugba (C, 73 ovr). While their bench isn’t as deep as the Red Flash’s, their starting lineup will be a handful. The Blackbirds were also projected to finish first last season, but found themselves in fourth place at the end of the year. Perhaps this will be the season that Greg Herenda gets them to the top of the conference.

Donyell Marshall and Central Connecticut State are not bad, but losing Tommy Victor, Walter Wheless, and Dana Ravello are a big loss for the blue devils who only bring back 1 starter in Russ Ba (PF, 69 ovr).

Here are the best of the best in the NEC.

Daymond Salazar, SF, Fairleigh Dickinson (81 ovr) is once again considered the best player in the NEC. He averaged 10.5 points and 4.4 rebounds last season but only shot 36% from the field. His best asset is probably his speed and strength, as he uses his 6’7” frame to get close to the basket and finish.

Tamsir Grady, C, Mount St. Mary’s (78 ovr) is now a senior and ready to pair up with his new frontcourt mate (see below) to wreak havoc in the NEC. His biggest struggle will be the absolute dearth of talent at guard for the Mountaineers. He’s a good mid-range shooter and is relatively quick and strong.

Louis Krymski, C, Mount St. Mary’s (74 ovr). Dinko went hard after Krymski, who chose to play for MSM instead. The 6’11” freshman has very soft hands and a refined post game and should complement Grady’s midrange game well.

Dallas Perry, PF, Long Island (75 ovr) is the reigning freshman of the year and is ready to lead the Blackhawks to an NCAA tournament appearance. Je’s only 6’7” but his 36-inch vertical allows him to play much bigger, which is why he led the NEC in blocks last season and averaged 7 points and rebounds per game.

    Games I’ll Play
I’ll be playing 8 games for each team: the Drago Derby, 2 non-conf games, and 5 conference games. I’ll also play alternating postseason tournament games.
    • November 23, 2023 vs Butler [Non-Conference]
    • Dec 1, 2023 – Drago Derby at Loretto, PA
    • December 3, 2023 at Central Connecticut State [NEC]
    • December 14, 2023 vs Duquesne [Non-Conference]
    • January 5, 2024 at Robert Morris [NEC]
    • February 2, 2024 vs Sacred Heart [NEC]
    • February 9, 2024 at St. Francis (NY) [NEC]

      Re: Introduction

Man, that small ball lineup Dinko can roll out would be a lot of fun to watch for sure.

I forget is this an open or closed legacy? I only ask to see if you would manipulate the lineups for your opponents to make sure that Grady and Krymski play plenty of minutes either together or separated since MSM is devoid of quality guard play.

It's closed. So I can't edit their lineups, just playbooks, sliders, and tendencies.

Fortunately (I think) they will have Krymski and Grady both starting, and with the way I've seen rotations in this game, it means that at least 1 should be in the game for most, if not all of the game.

I don't remember exactly who is on their team, but I seem to recall that every player that wasn't those two was in the 50s, maybe low 60s. It's a precipitous drop.

          2023 NBA Free Agency Results

Free agency has wrapped up and it was less eventful than last year’s free agency period, though it’s hard to live up to the standard of a Damian Lillard three-team mega-trade. However, there were still some interesting headlines and moves.

          Headlines
Denver makes a big move and gets Jonathan Isaac
The Nuggets want to get an NBA title, their first in NBA history. Their starting lineup had four scary parts: Jamal Murray, Bradley Beal, Bol Bol, and Nikola Jokic. Now they’ve added a 5th: Jonathan Isaac is their new SF. This gives them a frontcourt with 7’2” Bol, 7’0” Jokic, and 6’11” Isaac. That may be the tallest and scariest frontcourt in the NBA.

          SGA moves to Miami
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander left the rebuilding project in Oklahoma City…for another project in Miami. He’ll start at shooting guard for the Heat and hopefully open things up for the talented young players in the Heat’s frontcourt. Or maybe, he’s just what Bill Simmons calls a “good stats, bad team guy”, as he’s moved from LAC to OKC to MIA. For Oklahoma City, this was a shock, but they rebounded quickly by signing Bogdan Bogdanovic and will need to see Dan Vignale, Vytas Kowalczuk, Milos Jeffers, and Seth Valsin step up.

          Jimmy Butler re-signs for pennies
As previously reported, Butler wants to win another title. So even though he could have signed for over $30M per year, he came back to Golden State for just $5M, hoping his generosity helps the team secure another title.

The Lakers and Pacers hand out bad contracts
There are bad contracts every year, but two contracts in particular have the pundits flabbergasted. First, the Lakers were in a hurry to give DeAndre Jordan (C, 82 ovr) $100M over three years. The Lakers missed the playoffs last year and Jordan had a 10 year low in rebounds per game (10.4) and a 13 year low in points scored (5.4). It’s not clear who else was going to give Jordan $100M, but LA felt they really needed to.

However, the Lakers were upstaged by a contract that made John Wall’s deal look reasonable. The Indiana Pacers, who missed the playoffs by a mile last year, gave 33 year old Kemba Walker (PG, 86 ovr) $200M over 5 years. Walker did score over 20 points per game last season, but the Pacers were not good and it’s not clear how being on the hook for $45 million when Walker is 37 years old is a good idea. Fans thought Walker would be a stopgap, not the long-term solution and the Pacers have likely doomed themselves to another half-decade of mediocrity.

          Trades
There were a few smaller trades worth noting before we break down the main event.
          • The Suns needed a point guard, so they sent Robert Covington (PF, 79 ovr) and a 2025 second rounder to Cleveland, who had 6 rotation-quality guards. The Cavaliers sent back Fred VanVleet (PG, 77 ovr) and 2022 first rounder Brandon Wilcox (PF, 75 ovr).
          • The Hawaii Honu are serious about their commitment to Southeast Asia, and they showed it by making a deal with the Magic. They sent Marquel Clemmons (PG, 71 ovr), Willy Hernangomez (C, 75 ovr), and a 2024 second rounder to Orlando for second generation Vietnamese-American Dave Tran (PF, 80 ovr). Tran just finished his second season out of the University of Washington. He averaged 9 points per game in 63 appearances. He’ll compete for a starting role for the Honu, where he would have been the 5th or 6th forward in the rotation for the Magic.
          • Denzel Valentine’s (SF, 77 ovr) trade wish has been granted as the Jazz unloaded him and a 2024 first rounder to Sacramento for Ervin Zamore (SF, 76 ovr) and a 2025 first rounder. Zamore is entering his 4th season, but is only 23 years old and the UAB grad is showing some potential as a wing defender.

The big trade was the one that allowed the Nuggets to become the longest team in the NBA. Denver sent two starting-caliber players and picks to Orlando for Jonathan Isaac (SF, 86 ovr) and a pick swap.

You might be asking “why would Orlando trade Isaac?” It’s understandable if all you see is the 6’11” frame and the potential. But if you ask an Orlando fan, they might say “good riddance!” Isaac is averaging 5 points per game for his career and would be blocking rookie Jameer Trammell (SF, 81 ovr) second year pro Jaan O’Donnell (SF, 80 ovr) from getting playing time. In exchange, not only did Orlando get a 2025 first and a 2027 swap, but they also got two quality rotation guys and veteran leaders in Monte Morris (PG, 79 ovr) and Gary Harris (SG, 81 ovr).

          Re-Signings
Zion Williamson (PF, 93 ovr) with New Orleans
Clint Capela (C, 88 ovr) with Milwaukee
Jimmy Butler (SF, 87 ovr) with Golden State
Malcolm Brogdon (PG, 87 ovr) with Portland
DeAndre Hunter (SF, 85 ovr) with Atlanta
Brandon Clarke (PF, 84 ovr) with Memphis
Andrew Wiggins (SF, 84 ovr) with Detroit
Bol Bol (C, 83 ovr) with Denver
Darius Garland (PG, 83 ovr) with Cleveland
Myles Turner (C, 82 ovr) with Boston
Nikola Vucevic (C, 81 ovr) with Atlanta
Rui Hachimura (PF, 81 ovr) with Minnesota

          Changed Teams
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SG, 85 ovr) switched from OKC to Miami
R.J. Barrett (SG, 83 ovr) moves from Sacramento to Washington
Markelle Fultz (PG, 83 ovr) leaves Utah and joins Hawaii
Emanuel Terry (PF, 83 ovr) moved from the G-League to San Antonio
Bogdan Bogdanovic (SG, 83 ovr) left New York and joined Oklahoma City
Tyler Herro (SG, 81 ovr) leaves Miami and joins Hawaii
Jaxson Hayes (C, 81 ovr) left New Orleans and joined Cleveland
Wendell Carter (C, 81 ovr) has moved on from Sacramento and signed with Indiana
Miles Bridges (SF, 79 ovr) left Detroit and joined Sacramento

          Notable Unsigned
John Wall (PG, 81 ovr, age 33)
Landry Shamet (SG, 79 ovr, age 26)
Kevin Knox II (SF, 79 ovr, age 24)
          Mo Wagner (C, 79 ovr, age 26)
Chris Paul (PG, 76 ovr, age 38)
Taylor Blount (PG, 76 ovr, age 23)

SGA on Miami? Looks like a questionable move but maybe Pat Riley knows something we don't. Speaking of knowing something, what the hell does DeAndre Jordan know about the Lakers to get a contract like that? League needs to investigate for black mail, lol.

Kemba's deal is quite questionable but at least he was productive? Hope that contract has some team-friendly clauses in it.

Like the move the Honu made, love the get by Denver for Isaac (he's someone I feel can definitely thrive in the right situation with the right injury luck).
            Any comments are welcome.

Yeah, the SGA to Miami moved shocked me. I control some of the league, but also let some things happen "naturally". That was all CPU to get SGA in Miami. They also signed a solid PG (I forgot to put him in rundown), so they now have 2 above average starters, Nurkic, 4-5 young players, and some role guys like Otto Porter Jr. I suppose Riley wanted talent and didn't want to wait. They aren't a bad team...but will need some of the young guys to transform if they want to be good.

Productive? Yeah, solid numbers. But the Pacers were the worst they've been in years last year with him running the show. They are tied to Kemba + CJ McCollum for a bit, and not sure it's going to go well.

The Tran trade plus the Herro and Fultz signings give the Honu a nice young team.

I think Issac has zero pressure in Denver. He just needs to guard the best wings and is the 5th scorer. I wouldn't be surprised to see him jump up closer to 10 ppg because of that. It also makes Denver a solid defensive team, which hasn't been the case.

                  Stetson 2023-24 Season Preview

You won’t find any negative commentary about Oggy from people in central Florida or among the national media. He came to DeLand among controversy and a tarnished reputation and two straight NCAA tournament trips and a few human-interest pieces of CBS have turned everything around.

Stetson is a slight favorite to win the Atlantic Sun but are a relatively young team and will face good competition from Jacksonville and Belmont.

                  Projected Lineup

Last season was all about height for the Hatters. This year is all about wings. How will Oggy manage the starters and rotations for Lennox Evertsen, Brendon Pocius, Neil Mobley, and freshman Alvin Causey and Brandin Mulic? To start the season, Oggy is looking to go with “twin towers” of Jerimie Scott and freshman Ray Rowe in the frontcourt and have most of his athletic wings start on the bench. Arnaud Dahi gets the starting nod over “Spicy K” as Nevill starts the year as the 6th man and sparkplug off the bench.

There isn’t a lot of shooting on this Hatters team and wins are going to need to come from defense, fast breaks, and scoring near the basket. If the initial starting lineup doesn’t click they way he expects, Oggy could mix things up with a smaller lineup that puts Nevill at point, Dahi and Evertsen as shooters, Pocius at PF, and Ray Rowe at center. The Hatters would sacrifice size but get better speed, shooting, and ballhandling.

Two players are being redshirted: freshman point guard Kyle Coulibaly could benefit from some time adjusting to the USA and 7’1” JuCo transfer Pat Van.

                  Season Projection
Jacksonville is still a good team, but they’ve had enough turnover that their reign atop the Atlantic Sun conference may be coming to an end. Their greatest hope at getting back to the NCAA tournament comes in the form of Marquette transfer Perry Yeager (SG, 79 ovr). The senior is a great shooter and could score 20 points a game for the Dolphins and has star freshman Haron Videnov (SF, 74 ovr) and Homer Nelke (C, 71 ovr) to help him out. Jackonville’s rotation features 4 players 6’10” or taller and their only weakness is at point guard where they are starting Kenney Dancy (PG, 56 ovr).

Belmont lacks a deep bench or elite height, but the Bruins have a formidable starting lineup that features Jerimie Sarchet (SG, 77 ovr), Ulrich Stivers (PF, 77 ovr), Johnnie Munns (SG, 76 ovr), and Freddie Sidibe (SF, 70 ovr). Outside of those three teams, there are some talented players, but it’s hard to see other teams overtaking that top trio.

Here are the best of the best in the Atlantic Sun.

Perry Yeager, SG, Jacksonville (79 ovr) had his best season at Marquette his sophomore year where he scored 6.5 points per game and shot 46% from deep. However, his minutes dropped significantly two years ago and he decide to transfer. He’ll now lead a Jacksonville team who hope that his great shooting and ballhanding can set him apart from the rest of the conference.

Haron Videnov, SF, Jacksonville (74 ovr) – is just a freshman who joined his hometown school. But he already has very few weaknesses in his game and looks to be a player that the Dolphins will heavily rely upon.

Jerimie Sarchet, SG, Belmont (77 ovr) had a bit of a down year last season, seeing his points dropping by 2 per game and his assists per game falling by 1.5. Bruins fans hope that he steps back up this year as the well-rounded two guard leads Belmont.

Ulrich Stivers, PF, Belmont (77 ovr) has made second team all-conference for two straight seasons and excels at scoring near the basket thanks to his 6’8” size and 35-inch vertical leap. The senior is a reliable player for Belmont who scored 14 points and averaged 9.5 rebounds per game last season. Averaging a double-double and getting conference player of the year honors is not out of the question for the Evansville, IN native.

Michael Rost, C, North Florida (78 ovr) is “the one that got away” from Oggy, who now takes out his frustration by trying to beat Rost twice a year. The 6’11” sophomore has very little help from the rest of the Ospreys roster but is quick and strong for his size and has shown an ability to step up when his team needs him to the most.

                  Games I’ll Play
I’ll be playing 8 games for each team: the Drago Derby, 2 non-conf games, and 5 conference games. I’ll also play alternating postseason tournament games.

                  2. Dec 1, 2023 – Drago Derby at Loretto, PA
                  3. December 18, 2023 vs Robert Morris [Non-Conference]
                  4. December 31, 2023 vs Kennesaw State [Atlantic Sun]
                  5. January 14, 2024 vs Jacksonville [Atlantic Sun]
                  6. January 22, 2024 at North Florida [Atlantic Sun]

The Inside Scoop – Preseason Edition

The Inside Scoop is based on TheDominator273's awesome spreadsheet to add random events to your MyLeague.

Elmer takes an elder role and steps up his game
Note: for the first time ever the spreadsheet chose the same player twice. That was fun.
Elmer Okpalobi (PG, 76 ovr) was a star for Memphis in college but didn’t get a single minute of playing time last season. That seems to have motivated him as he showed up in camp this year with two meaningful changes:
                    • He’s showing up as a confident leader, with coaches impressed by the way he guides and directs teammates
                    • He is tenacious on defense and clearly worked on his fundamentals and did tape study in a real way this offseason

It’s not clear how much playing time he’ll get this year, but he’s certainly made an impression this offseason and this should bode well for the future of his career.

Jerami Grant is in a funk
The native of the northeast US is reportedly miserable in Orlando and has not looked nearly as talented as he has in past season’s and may not see any playing time for the Magic this season if he doesn’t turn things around. Grant (PF, 72 ovr) would not respond when asked to comment.

Big Problems for a Big Guy
Lamar Olson (C, 74 ovr) was the BMOC at Ohio State. Getting picked 17th overall by the Hornets seems to have made him arrogant to a fault. He’s only putting in minimal effort outside of practices and is looking more like a G-League player than a potential rotation guy and future starter for the Hornets. This is bad news for a team that desperately needed big man depth.

Summer league has wrapped up, and as a gift to you all here are some gifs of exciting young players to get you ready for the season.

Seattle’s first round pick Bobby Drake hits the (unofficial) first basket of his career. It was the only three he made that game.

Even at his young age, Drake knows that if you guard him with some a foot shorter than him, he’s going to assert himself and throw it down.

The Honu’s Rashad Kanare is fouled on a layup. Hawaii fans are hoping he can blossom into an All-Star when given playing time.

Marquis Huffman finally looks like he’ll get stable playing time and is excited to take advantage of it. Here’s a short preview of his offensive capabilities as he gets fouled on a reverse layup.

Konare is available and playing this year (it's his 3rd NBA season). It's first round pick Artie Tyler (of Australia) that is 1 year away.

                              Preseason Recruiting Update

This season is not the scholarship extravaganza we had for the brothers last year, as Dinko has two and Oggy has four that they can use this year, with half of those scholarships being carried over from last season. Dinko will be looking to build for the future and complement his young guards and forwards while Oggy’s goal is to build relationships and get players who may be OK playing in Stetson even without him around.

                              St. Francis
Dinko has nobody meaningful graduating this year, so recruiting is all about grabbing the best players for the future. Dinko is going hard after his first 4-star recruit, a 6’8” SF from Oklahoma City and is supplementing that with a talented guard or center. With only two scholarships, he can afford to be picky.

                              1. Jeremy Miller, SF, **** - 6’8” SF, #98 overall from Oklahoma City.
                              2. Esmond Simmons, PG, *** - #165 overall from Brooklyn.
                              3. Micah Ziri, PG, *** - Juco freshman from Pittsburgh.
                              4. Jameel Clinton, SG, *** - #130 overall from Cambridge, MA.
                              5. Nate Sinville, PG, *** - #227 overall from Brooklyn.
                              6. Ron Spears, C, *** - JuCo freshman from Philadelphia.
                              7. Gabriel Griffith, C, *** - #352 overall from Philadelphia.
                              8. Roland Toppert, PF, *** - #310 overall from Cincinnati.
                              9. Gino Bigelow, SG, *** - #111 overall from Baltimore.
                              10. Mawel Lettenderberger, PG, *** - #214 overall from Modesto, CA

                              Stetson
One could forgive Oggy if he’s paying less attention to recruiting than usual, but that’s clearly not the case. If this is his last year in DeLand, he wants to leave the school with a full cupboard. He’s got the inside track on a JuCo four star who is looking forward to moving to Florida from snowy Western Iowa.

                              1. Raitis Carlisle, SF, **** - JuCo sophomore from Council Bluffs, IA. Oggy is only coach really going after him.
                              2. Jasper Boythe, PF, *** - #160 overall from Deltona, FL, at 6’11” he’s huge for a PF.
                              3. Immanuel Hancock, SG, *** - JuCo sophomore from Jacksonville.
                              4. Delbert Schneider, PF, *** - #199 overall from Chicopee, MA.
                              5. Immanuel Hamilton, PF, *** - #201 overall recruit from Phoenix, AZ.
                              6. Amit Reece, SG, **** - JuCo freshman from Palm Bay, FL.
                              7. Sheray Minard, SF, *** - #248 overall from Bend, OR.
                              8. Nicholas Prillman, PF, *** - JuCo sophomore from Arlington Heights, IL.
                              9. Nikola Petkunas, PF, *** - 6’8” recruit from Lithuania.
                              10. Donatas Joneliunas, PF, *** - 6’9” recruit from Lithuania.

                                Re: Preseason Recruiting Update

I was waiting for the 4-star recruits to start taking notice of the brothers -- I feel like Dinko has a good shot at nabbing his first 4-star. He's in a stable environment, he's shown commitment to the school repeatedly, and he's not looking to jump to another program; if I'm a recruit, I've definitely taken notice of that.
                                Any comments are welcome.
