Tovarich: De ja vu huh? Big lead in the first half. Second half is below average and kinda frustrating as usual. I probably would never have subbed in the starters in the second half, but 10/27 in the paint was extremely frustrating. I know it's mostly backups, but the big men were cursed at shooting from 1 foot away today. It was hilarious how many different ways you can watch them miss from point blank range.

Reporter: Is that the fewest 3's taken in your career coach?

Tovarich: Very possibly. They pressed like every possession of the entire game except for maybe 4 or 5. The PF's all had nice numbers because of that. Usually you got one of their big guys against two of ours if we do it right, but I was afraid to let the centers touch the ball so the PF's took care of business for us today luckily. I think we took 5 in the second half. I might have left it at 0 but scoring in the paint was almost verboten.

Reporter: Is the team just kind of zoning out during the second half because you haven't had a close game for almost a month?

Tovarich: Probably has something to do with it. And the starters aren't logging many minutes. Trying to get the B team minutes and stats and the walkons and develop the future starters comes with its ups and downs.

Tovarich: Should we just play a recording of most of my recent press conferences? Every game lately feels just about the same.

Reporter: Do you think a bigger conference should invite you to join?

Tovarich: Yeah, that would be nice if that were possible, but we are here until the end of eternity. This is probably how Gonzaga feels.

Reporter: Why do you think their coach is rated higher than you?

Tovarich: Great question. I have more losses in my career than he has games coached. I was stunned to see that in the pre-game.

Reporter: Finally you have a winning team in FIU, where you've had trouble. Do you expect to finally get a close game?

Tovarich: I'm not necessarily complaining when I mentioned that we haven't had any, but they give us trouble for sure. We've lost there the last two years. I don't know what it is about them. I know they're a decent enough team, but I'm honestly not sure what specifically about them or their arena are problems for us.

Tovarich: It's rather hard to explain how we won that one. There's something about this arena that makes us become incompetent. The rebounding was pitiful, worse than most any game I've seen with this roster in a long time. The point blank misses galore, the awful shot defense. It's hard to explain. We got up 9 a couple times, and I knew I better start running some clock. I had visions of Arkansas State in my mind, and surely enough, we miss a bunch of shots, they hit everything, and even if they didn't, it didn't matter because they got most of their misses back and we're down by 1 with about 45 seconds to go. Lewis hit a huge 3. He was about the only one who could shoot. Then we forced a bad pass and they started the fouling and we hit 9/10 at the end there to put it away. +14 in turnovers and -14 in rebounds I guess all cancels out somewhat. Baffling all around. 12/27 in the paint. Eventually I think we just shot nothing but 3's there in the second half because I'd seen enough of all that. I still don't know why we can't rebound. That center of theirs gives up almost a foot to both our big guys and looks more like an offensive linemen, but our big guys just stand there and watch everyone around them grab the ball. It's really inexplicable how often there are 3 of us and 1 of them and they grab it.

Reporter: Is it just because FIU is a quality team or is the road environment?

Tovarich: The road environments are all the same. I think everyone has the same 3 cheerleaders and the mascots standing in the same place. Some have doors behind the end line. Some don't. The logos are a little different. That's about it. The baskets are the same. Why we play like garbage here, I don't know, but we pulled it out somehow there with Lewis' 3 to put us in the position to get all the FT attempts.

Reporter: FIU coach doesn't understand why the refs gave you all the calls.

Tovarich: I'd feel that way too. It was how I felt @ Monroe I think, or maybe Troy, whichever. 10 of those came at the end, so 11-2 FT's before that, but we weren't really bothering to contest much. All the big guys' reaction time was dreadfully slow. The ball was practically going through the hoop, then all of a sudden, someone decided to jump and defend it, leaving them grossly out of position to rebound, which they'd also jump hopelessly late for.

Reporter: Does that team have more speed than you?

Tovarich: No. That's another thing I find odd playing in this arena. We are seemingly on a breakaway and someone literally just runs right around us and gets in the way, and the we go flying backwards like we had some invisible wall all of a sudden. We have tremendous speed, and that doesn't seem to happen to us anywhere else. All just part of the lore of Pharmed Arena I guess. It seems to have some strange effects. Luckily we got through this one.

Reporter: Senior day is up next, but you have 7 including the walkons. Anything special planned?

Tovarich: Hopefully Merriex can forgive me, but we'll activate Blankenship and try to get him in the game somewhere. Can't quite start the 5 scholarship seniors, but we'll start the 4 for sure and maybe Capel can have a few extra minutes if the game dictates it.

Tovarich: That might be the first easy game with South Alabama I've had here. Usually I swear they shoot 60% just so they can go into their halfcourt trap to annoy me. No one for them shot 50%. Nice to get the walkons in for some quality minutes, both career highs for Zoellner and Blankenship. That's the beginning and end of Blankenship's season, but hopefully he'll remember it. Zoellner will remain on the active roster for some mop-up time if we have any, but that was his last home game. Capel got some extra minutes. Shehan got a start in his final home game. He may get some more, that's always fluid. I'm not too concerned about the rest. They play tons as it is.

Reporter: Congratulations on clinching the Sun Belt title coach.

Tovarich: Oh, right, that, yeah. Amazon should have mailed that banner already.

Reporter: Did a close game with FIU get you back into a state where the players will know what to do in a close game after not having one for so long?

Tovarich: You'd hope so. Maybe we'll see them in Mobile again. Between them, Atlantic and Arkansas State, we could easily see two of them and find out. It was a hideous game but we were clutch at the end and hopefully that's a good reminder for them of what to do while we plow through a bunch of overmatched teams.

Tovarich: Luckily they struggled at shooting too, or we'd have lost. We didn't do a whole lot well. -7 in rebounds, big shock. I just about lost it the possession they got FOUR offensive rebounds, and then missed the 5th shot anyway LOL. Still infuriating to let them have that many chances, but simultaneously hilarious they still didn't score. I don't get why it's hard to stay tight on that Midgley guy. There's not a lot of interpretation involved. Yet, he was always open. Got some turnovers luckily too, another thing we need too many of.

Reporter: Is there a letdown after clinching the conference championship?

Tovarich: Highly doubtful. Not a lot of easy road games. We lost here in double overtime last year with their crazy out of this world shooting, but they were quite the opposite this year.

Reporter: Is getting a 1 seed in the tournament important?

Tovarich: We did much better last year as a 5. We ended up drawing some ridiculous 8 or 9 seed who had considerably better talent than their seed and record, so no, probably not that much. Once that first round is over, that means little. Everyone can beat you. All about the randomness of the matchups and who plays better that day. We'll still try to win all our games and get one though.

Tovarich: I think that's the best shooting I've ever witnessed by my own team anyway. Most of them were layups, but we sure can make those look hard too sometimes.

Reporter: Usually you get upset when the other team makes a bunch of 3's like that in the second half.

Tovarich: Yeah, I'll admit I just kinda mailed that one in in the second half. We made no adjustments. I know the two guards were starting to score a lot and normally I'd tell people to get tight on them, but I'm not entirely sure my team understands what that means anyway. I just let them all do their thing in the second half. It felt more like a scrimmage for the fans than a serious competitive basketball game.

Reporter: You'll either see South Alabama or Little Rock in the SBC Tournament. Do you have a preference?

Tovarich: I suppose it's best to avoid all that awkwardness with who's the home team when we're the higher seed but they're on their home court and we all wear the wrong colors. I think we solved the halfcourt trap that used to annoy us.

Tovarich: Other than Li, everyone had a nice shooting night. We rebounded well. Very strange. Disappointed not to get Arkansas State again, but they didn't earn it. Quick turnaround. No questions.

Tovarich: Just have to laugh at how good the Dallas Mavericks are. Incredible second half. 10 misses only in the second half and got rebounds back on 7 of them. 70% shooting almost. 21-9 rebounds. 7 blocks in a half. Shooting off a 3 with 4 seconds to go. Just roll your eyes and move on I guess. Congrats to them.

Reporter: You almost sounded like you meant it coach.

                              Tovarich: I almost did.

Reporter: Any lineup changes going into the tournament then?

Tovarich: Maybe Shehan back in for better team unity.

Reporter: Do you still expect a 1 seed?

                              Tovarich: Yes.

Reporter: You've never sounded like you care much about the Sun Belt tournament. Is that a factor in only having won 3 of 6 in it?

Tovarich: Maybe. Those teams need this game to continue their season and we don't. We dominate the regular season.
