Tovarich: I keep waiting for some kind of slump, or awful performance or something that shows the inconsistency that usually comes with some young guys and less team unity and it pops up here and there, but no total clunkers of a game yet somehow. I'd have made the schedule harder if I knew we'd be so good.

Reporter: What changed for Suotamo at halftime?

Tovarich: I guess the curse got lifted. The big guys were inept in the first half. 2/8 on layups for him, Ferris was 1/4 I think. It seemed like the college basketball gods decided that anyone with a C next to their name was cursed in that first half. Their C only took 3 shots in the game. It's like the other team knew that's how the game would go. Luckily they seem to be a 3-man team and we at least did a better job against them after the first 42 seconds of the second half when they started on an 8-0 run. Suotamo was his normal self in the second half at least. Still poor rebounding effort though.

Reporter: Should Bazin get the red light from shooting?

    Tovarich: Yeah, probably.

Reporter: You begin with South Alabama in Sun Belt play and you said the best way around the halfcourt trap was to throw long passes over the top. Can you do that with a true FR PG?

Tovarich: We'll find that out. That's still the plan.

    Reporter: No recruits signed in-season?

Tovarich: No. One went to Florida, who we'll see next week I think. I may have not learned my lesson from last year and overreached for what we can go for here.

I have no idea how many times it's happened, I've only noticed maybe 4 times in my 9 seasons so far, but I only tend to see it when it says the wrong result on the screen, which causes me to do a double take and get paranoid and look and make sure everything's ok in my record but it still seems to count literally everything correctly. There's just some imaginary overtime. I didn't look into team stats either because I don't often look at those, but I'll try to remember if I see it again.

Tovarich: That halfcourt trap's as annoying as ever. Luckily Suotamo was superhuman. You'd think 16 rebounds would be considered dominant but their big guy got 16 too. Other than Pawlak, the 3 point shooting was brutal. Luckily those two bailed us out. Great job at the line. Stafford went 4/4 there at the end, in what I think was the first time we've really had pressure FT's to close out a game and he was Galbreath-esque.

Reporter: How do you characterize Stafford's job making the long passes against the half court trap?

Tovarich: Tremendous. Just 2 turnovers, I'll take that. We did so-so at finishing them, but it was good enough. The road game against them later will be tough though if we don't shoot some 3's better.

Reporter: What can be done differently against Largent next time?

Tovarich: Just dare him to shoot 11/14 again probably. I don't think it mattered what we did.

Reporter: How big is the Florida game coming up with both teams being in the top 10?

Tovarich: It's a great regular season matchup, but that's all it is. They ought to be the favorite to win that at home. We're not that deep and the depth is young in most spots. I'm still waiting for that to rear its ugly head and this game is the most likely spot for that.

Tovarich: I'm sure they're much better than that, it was a surprisingly easy night. I think we had a 23-15 lead and they went on a 10-0 run. We responded nicely with I think a 17-0 run and blew them out the rest of the half. Then the backups primarily in the second did a decent job too.

Reporter: Is it encouraging to outrebound a top 10 power school on the road?

Tovarich: I'll certainly take it. I wasn't liking the way it started with them shooting 3/5 and getting both misses right back and I think it took us almost 3 minutes to get our first rebound, then we end up coming back and winning on the boards. It doesn't mean a ton though. It won't stop us from getting outrebounded by San Jose State.

Reporter: What made them turn the ball over so many times?

Tovarich: They were much too predictable. The passes were too long. They don't have a backup PG so some people handling the ball aren't ones who really should. To only play 8 players, they obviously lack depth and that's one area for sure.

Reporter: Do you remember Flores is on the team?

Tovarich: Not really. He should've taken the hint and transferred last year. Hopefully he gets it this time. I already have 2 dead scholarships sitting on the bench that I should've cut and didn't, so I can't afford to waste one on him for another season.

Tovarich: Luckily we built up a nice lead in the first half. It was fun to watch them come out and start 16/21 shooting before they finally missed some at the end. Amazing how that guy Gansey had 0 points in the first half and I think we had 11 in 3 or 4 minutes right out of the break. Our 3 point shooting was brutal. Suotamo carried us once again. Some rebounds would be nice, but maybe Merriex is better at that, certainly was today in far fewer minutes.

Reporter: Is there anyone left on your schedule that can beat you? You'll be heavily favored the rest of the way.

Tovarich: We have a tournament coming up. I know enough about tournament semifinals to know how often the other team plays like it's some kind of season-ending elimination game. And then someone in conference will get us when we go to their place and it's their Super Bowl.

Reporter: You experimented some with Stafford off the ball, will that continue?

Tovarich: He's one of our best 3-point shooters, although I think those were largely banned today, at least for Camper and Bazin. So we may do that again.

Reporter: How about with Suotamo and Ferris on the floor at the same time?

Tovarich: I'm not sure we'll try that one again. Merriex is so tall and good at rebounding that he's practically another center.

Tovarich: I'm stunned we managed to hang on there. You could see the comeback brewing the entire second half. I should have recognized sooner that we needed to run clock. 7/27 shooting in the second half and 2/10 from 3 was baffling to watch. Suotamo had 12 boards at the break and only 1 all second half. They shot 100% on 3's in the second half. That Clinton guy should have shot on every possession and he'd have scored 100 by himself. I don't know what changed at halftime, but we're lucky to have Stafford at the line at the end, 8/8 on FT's in the last 30 seconds by a true FR is amazing.

Reporter: Why do you think there are such wild swings in quality at halftime sometimes, or was this just the tournament semifinal difficulty you have alluded to?

Tovarich: Yeah, I wish I knew. Seems like things are just beyond your control. You shoot well on 3's at halftime, and then shoot 20%. +2 in rebounds at halftime and -6 in the second. No idea if the other coaches give amazing speeches or what it is, but yeah, tournament semifinals all seem insanely hard sometimes. Gotta keep the foot on the pedal in the first half and build up a lead and notice sooner that you're not allowed to make shots and slow it down so they hopefully don't have time to come back while they're shooting 100% on 3's.

Reporter: Rider in the championship, do you expect any challenge there?

Tovarich: I can easily see them playing way over their heads, outrebounding us easily and us shooting 20% on 3's. I just watched it.

Tovarich: Nice to have a game go as it should.

Reporter: +9 in rebounds must be nice.

Tovarich: Yeah, they didn't exactly come from where you feel like they should, but I guess it doesn't really matter.

Reporter: How about the game by Bazin?

Tovarich: Yeah, just like his first game of the season. He's either really on or really off, and there doesn't seem to be much middle ground with him. Such are the challenges of freshmen.

Reporter: Was the lopsided score why the bench got more minutes today?

Tovarich: Yeah, there was no Pepperdine-like second half 100% 3-point shooting to worry about today, so they get more minutes. That's how it should be against an opponent like that, but you never really know. You'd hope there are lots more minutes for the backups in conference play, but it doesn't work out like that nearly as often as it should.

Looks like this may be the year you pull off the coveted undefeated regular season. Hopefully, I didn’t just institute a jinx! Or you don’t pull a 2014 Kentucky or Wichita State a few years later.

I'd be very surprised if I got through conference play without one of the team going insane for like 30 points in 5 minutes and beating me. It always happens somewhere. But I'm also surprised to make it this far because this is definitely not a deep team compared to the last few years, and I'm starting a true FR PG, I thought there'd be more than usual turnovers with him and all the joys that come with lower team unity but they haven't come up yet.

P.S. I'm just getting started on your newer legacy. I think I was all caught up on the other one I think.

Tovarich: Didn't take long to feel like that was a loss. They jumped on us quick. We never made a single shot with a chance to take the lead. They dominated the boards despite their center having all the height and shape of a fire hydrant. No one had a good shooting night really. 21 extra shots we took and we were barely close at the end, until that so-called "shooting" foul that gave them 3 FT's when they obviously were not shooting. They got two guys who shoot 7/8, even the fireplug center was out hitting a 3. Can just laugh and move on to the next one.

Reporter: Why do you have such trouble in this arena?

Tovarich: No idea. They're usually a decent team, but we seemingly never play well here for reasons that go beyond my understanding.

Reporter: This team is not getting to the line like the past couple years, why is that?

Tovarich: Ask the refs. They only called 3 fouls on FIU the whole game LOL.

Reporter: This team hasn't lost a game yet, how do you think they'll respond?

Tovarich: It's inevitable in a regular season. Young PG, all the guys you depend on were so-so. Bench was ok, the other team just decided to shoot 65%. We allow that quite a few times a year. Can't overcome it all the time.

Tovarich: Good bounceback I guess. Rebounded decently. Turned the ball over a bit much. It was odd how many times we'd get it down low to Suotamo and before he even has a split second to think about moving, that center of theirs would swipe it right out of his hand without ever once being called for a reach in.

Reporter: Why do you allow 65% shooting one game, and under 40% the next?

Tovarich: No idea. We don't really do anything differently. We're pretty much exclusively man to man defense. I feel like people shoot 100% on 3's against our zone, so we don't really bother. We get tight on people when they prove they can hurt us. Seems like our defense is irrelevant. Some other factors beyond our control decide these things.

Tovarich: Ugly shooting, but good win.

Reporter: You switched to a zone in the second half, why?

Tovarich: Because no one could shoot a 3 to save their lives. 7/42 combined. It seemed best to bait them into shooting 3's when they were open.

Reporter: Was the game easy after you got their center in foul trouble?

Tovarich: Incredibly. Both our centers dominated. I don't even know why we shot the 3's we did in the second half. Every shot should've come from down low. I think maybe there was a hole in the roof creating some kind of jet stream through the arena that made it impossible to shoot from more than 2 feet away.

Tovarich: We haven't had many people pressing us at the beginning of games, so it was nice to see what Stafford did against it and he did great. Jack did a great job breaking the press. We got the 2 quick fouls on their center, so we dumped the ball down low on almost every possession in that first half. Easy points.

Reporter: Had you ever gone a half without a made 3 before the first half?

Tovarich: I have to think I had some Eastern Shore teams that were so awful they didn't.

Reporter: Are you happy not to be #1 after the losses in conference?

Tovarich: Yeah, it's a bullseye for sure. Hopefully those two keep going undefeated.

Reporter: Couldn't you have gotten the bench more minutes tonight with the lopsided score?

Tovarich: Merriex was cursed, might as well get him out. They made a little run to start the second half there, and it was against the backups where they got it down to 12, so I figured I better make sure it's comfortable before I put them back in.
