Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

Tovarich: I have cut the lone scholarship receiver from last year, PG Kueth Barrow. I will keep the other 15 players on the roster. Most of the ones that would get cut are JR's or SR's, so the scholarship doesn't open up any sooner for releasing them. The roster:

Tovarich: The depth chart is a work in progress. Few, if any players will be playing in their natural position until I can make this mess better.

Reporter: Uh coach, do you think any of the players will want to play for you the way you've trashed the roster?

Tovarich: They don't have a choice. They went 11-22. I'm guessing they don't feel great about themselves to begin with. If it makes them feel better, it's Coach Felton's fault for not knowing how to recruit better or put a roster together in a coherent manor. Let's move on to the schedule, which I now realize I should have made much easier.

Reporter: What are your expectations for the season?

Tovarich: I'll be thrilled if we're not worse than last year's 11-22. Hopefully we'll figure out something that works somewhere along the line. I should probably have scheduled 12 cupcakes in the OOC, as we are basically a cupcake ourselves.

Reporter: You have 4 scholarships. What's the goal in recruiting.

Tovarich: Everything. Anything. I don't know. Whoever I can get.

Wow. Cannot believe that WKY hire. Yikes.

That's a rough roster, but I think you can get 16+ wins.

It's possible I'll figure something out that works but I'm not that optimistic. My true FR PG at WKU was an 80 at the end of the season, and the other 4 guys were 87-89. This is a huge step down. I'm hopeful I'll be able to recruit 4 FR who can all start immediately.

Tovarich: Good win. Where is everyone?

Student Newspaper Writer: It's Tuesday. Kirby Smart is doing his weekly press conference.

Tovarich: OK, good, so no one cares what I say here?

Student Newspaper Writer: Well, I drew the short straw and had to come here, so we might as well talk.

Tovarich: Great, what would you like to ask?

Student Newspaper Writer: Why did you schedule a game on football press conference day?

Tovarich: November 1st is the first day we're allowed to.

Student Newspaper Writer: Can you please avoid doing that in the future?

Tovarich: Sure thing kid. Anything about the game?

Student Newspaper Writer: Are you optimistic about the season starting 1-0?

Tovarich: No. We should beat Mercer.

Student Newspaper Writer: Can we be done now so I can get over to catch some more of the football press conference?

          Tovarich: Absolutely.

Tovarich: Well, it's a win anyway. I see a lot more of you showed up today.

Reporter: Most of us live in Atlanta coach. We usually only make the drive to Athens on home Saturdays.

Tovarich: We don't have any home games on Saturdays any time soon.

            Reporter: Haha, that's funny coach.

            Tovarich: So, questions?

Reporter: Yeah, have you heard any updates on the injury to the TE? Is he going to play next week?

Tovarich: I'm not privy to such things.

Reporter: So you're 2-0 coach. That must be exciting!

Tovarich: I certainly hope we're 2-0 against those teams.

Reporter: What happened to Banjo, he was on the roster and depth chart and now he's gone?

Tovarich: I think the football coach took him away.

Reporter: We'd have heard about that coach.

Tovarich: I initially was going to retain him on the roster, but I decided on cut day a week later that his services were no longer needed as he's below a walkon on the depth chart and it would be best for the program if that scholarship got freed up one year early.

Reporter: Why didn't you try as many 3's today as last game?

Tovarich: Mercer played zone mainly, so we shot over it. They were pretty overwhelmingly man defense today, so it was harder to get people open.

Reporter: How come y'all were so bad at FT's today?

            Tovarich: We're bad at everything.

Reporter: What do you plan on doing to improve the team then?

            Tovarich: Recruit.

            Reporter: I mean this team.

Tovarich: And I said what I meant. I'm not overly interested in improving the current players. I anticipate there is one starting spot left for them next season. One of them will get it. Then we'll likely start 4 FR. We're starting 4 SO now, so that's not much of a change. I need bodies for this current season, so we kept all these SO players, and there's no reason to cut them before their JR year because the scholarship frees up all the same the following recruiting class. This roster is an abject disaster. It'll take a few years to improve it. But there's no long-term plans with much, if any of the current players. I'm not worried about improving them, just getting through this season with under 20 losses hopefully. There is little potential for anyone on this roster and so it's not a balance of short term and long term with development. I expect none of them to start as SR's. They should enjoy their playing time they're getting and hope they'll be allowed to come off the bench next season. If some people would kindly transfer early, that'd be awesome. Usually I RS people every season and I didn't bother with any of that this year for a reason. Coach Felton obviously didn't believe in RS's either. See you all at the next game.

Reporter: Oh no coach, we're not going to Puerto Rico during a football weekend.

Tovarich: It's a win. It would have been embarrassing if it wasn't, but odds are we're going to have an embarrassing defeat somewhere, either to a lowly opponent or by some crazy margin. But we're 3-0 like we should be. We'll be underdogs tomorrow to either Temple or Notre Dame, whichever ends up winning the next game.

Reporter: Is this team building some confidence and momentum starting 3-0?

Tovarich: No. We could easily lose the next 4 or so.

Reporter: Why is Kovacevic the only person on the team who knows how to rebound?

Tovarich: I'm surprised he can. He's a PF trying to play with true centers. His rebounding numbers have been phenomenal. He might have a leg up on being the only non-freshman starter next season if he can keep this up.

Tovarich: Lo siento mucho a toda la gente, juego muy aburrido, yo se.

                Reporter: Come again coach?

Tovarich: I'm sorry to everyone, the game was very boring.

Reporter: Once you got up 26-9, your plan was just to run the clock out?

Tovarich: Yes. We were rebounding well, so an offensive board here and there and we kill some clock. We started on fire on 3's, and they never really found a rhythm on offense. They hit 3 or 4 shots in a row there in the second half I think, but we still ran the clock out on them rather easily.

Reporter: Is this encouraging that this team is better than you think?

Tovarich: It very possibly could be. But I think it most likely just means we shot well on 3's for a few minutes and Temple had a rough night. We'll know more later.

Reporter: Boston College was upset by Tulsa, is the championship now winnable?

Tovarich: Yeah, Notre Dame's the only ranked team in this tournament and Boston College is the best on paper and upsets galore prevent us from ever running into either of them. I have a real knack for that somehow in these in-season tournaments.

Reporter: Temple primarily ran a zone defense. Is that really preparation for anything for conference play, with no zone teams in the SEC?

Tovarich: No, we'll need Kovacevic not to go 0/5 in conference play and perfect the kickout to the 3-point shooters. We're just doing what needs to be done right now and we'll adjust later when we must.

Tovarich: Didn't take long to see we had no chance in that one. Down 17-4 right off the bat. We went to halftime with a whopping 6 rebounds. They started 12/14 while we started 2/14.

Reporter: What do you mean you had no chance coach? You were down only one score a few times at the end.

Tovarich: And we shot 0%. For a while we shot 0% within 2 scores, and I think they shot 100%. We finally managed to get a steal and a layup and make it one score and had a chance at the line to tie but missed the free throw, and every shot that would've tied or taken the lead. I was surprised to even get that close. Every time we got within 2 scores, it was like an automatic run for them after. Can't allow 70% shooting, over 60% on 3's and get rebounded almost 2-1. 14 extra shots and +16 in turnovers is the only reason that game was remotely close.

Reporter: Was that a fluke or is your defense bad?

Tovarich: It's not the last time we'll allow 70% shooting, but there's also nothing we can really seem to do about it. It just happens. If we're lucky, it won't happen too many times.

Reporter: Do you have a chance against Georgia Tech?

Tovarich: I tend to doubt it. We're at home though, so maybe the crowd can will us to victory.

It seems like you're still trying to figure out who your #1 offensive option should be. Definitely a lot of variety in terms of who is leading the way for your team each week. Will be interesting to see where it settles at.

Tovarich: Wow, surprising win. Both teams had pretty mediocre shooting nights. We got it done at the line and made a couple extra 3's. Pretty even game otherwise. Must have been SEC refs giving us the calls as the home team. I thank them for it.

Reporter: Is your team better than you thought?

Tovarich: So far, yes, but we've got some tough road games before conference play. I want to see how we do in some tough road environments, no disrespect to Georgia State. We're one game better than I expected right now and we've patchworked some plans together each game to get us through. I'm not sure we've got a long-term plan for how to win games. There may not be one. It's always been important to find out who's hot that night and go with them, and that's extra important with this team.

Reporter: Do you ever expect bench minutes to increase?

Tovarich: Sure, against Western Carolina and Kennesaw State I could see them getting 8 minutes instead of 5 or 6 if we play well.

Reporter: So, you have no faith in the bench?

Tovarich: The bench is executing tremendously.

                      Reporter: What are they executing?

Tovarich: What I tell them to do.

                      Reporter: Which is?

Tovarich: Waste time for about 90 seconds and let the starters rest. I can do the rest with timeouts.

Yeah, Zahn had a couple good games against teams who press. Kovacevic can rebound against these cupcake schools and get some putbacks. Not sure against a real team. Horton and Sanderson had some points against the zone teams as they're the only competent 3-point shooters. I think the big guys are going to be the plan when I get to the big boy portion of the schedule, as soon as I run 33 seconds off the clock.

You're on track to possibly even have a winning record. If you can beat GT, you can maybe go .400 in the SEC.

Tovarich: Whew, thought we had that in regulation when Sanderson hit the 3 with 4.7 to go to go up 3. Then we had some fouls to give. It should have worked against Texas in the national championship and it didn't. And it didn't work here either. They just threw some 3/4 court pass to the freaking center who hits a 3 as time expires. But we did just enough in overtime to get it done. They had a shot to go ahead and we got lucky they just missed it and we grabbed the rebound and they had to foul us twice to get to the bonus, irony that I love. Then we hit the 2 FT's with .5 to go up 3 and they didn't get a shot off.

Reporter: Can Kovacevic rebound against a good big man or just little schools with smaller players?

                            Tovarich: Probably the latter.

Reporter: Should we start getting excited about this team's record? Surely things are ahead of schedule.

Tovarich: I have no schedule for this team. Recruiting is on schedule and that's the only schedule. Even if this team does a lot better than I thought they would, the plan is still to have 4 freshman starting next year. Don't get excited unless we beat Miami or Virginia.

Reporter: Is the Hawkeye Challenge a must win?

Tovarich: I was expecting a Big 10 team in there and we seem to have replaced the host Big 10 team and now it's 3 smaller schools. I am quite familiar with Arkansas State, had a classic with them last year. Then I think the other game will be easier whoever it is. It'd be nice to win, but nothing's a must right now.

Tovarich: The offense wasn't pretty, for either team unless your name was Zahn. They were awful shooting in the first half, so were we except for him. Kovacevic was cursed in the first half. 2/9 and 4 of the misses were blocks. Root was 0/3 on layups. It got a bit better in the second half for us, never really for them. I wouldn't credit our defense too much. They just were off.

Reporter: Do you ever want to give your team credit for anything?

Tovarich: Then I have to give them blame when the other team shoots 70% and I don't believe it's bad defense in that case either.

Reporter: Still in a comfortable game at the end, just 5 minutes for the bench?

Tovarich: Yes, don't expect that to change much, even if we're up 20. I don't know if the 2 JR's on the B team would pull the trigger on transferring and using a RS season to play as SR's, like maybe at Savannah State or something, but I certainly hope they'll consider it. I've got my 4 scholarships out for the people I want, but I hope to have some backup plans available if I can free up a couple more this season.

Reporter: What do you expect from Southern Mississippi in the championship?

Tovarich: Another center-less team, only 2 PF's on their roster, both FR so we'll try to get it down low and take advantage of them, and their lack of depth and lack of height and not let them make it a jump shooting contest.

Tovarich: Good to win a tournament. If you're going to enter, you may as well try to win it. I'd hope to rebound better than +2 against a smaller, though not small school with no true center and only 2 FR PF's, but any game with a rebounding edge for us is going to be a victory. Just the 3rd time winning on the boards. I guess some credit to our defense. I'm not really sure what we did in those two games to force all those misses.

Reporter: Will Kovacevic ever be able to put up stats like tonight against a bigger school?

Tovarich: I have no idea. We'll see. There's no way to know until we do it a few more times. Nebraska wasn't really any better than us. Georgia Tech was easily our toughest non-conference opponent. Virginia was ranked in the pre-season but has fallen out. Minnesota's rated even lower than us. Miami's just a tad better is all. I'll have no idea until he gets a chance more regularly and he does or doesn't do it.

Reporter: Still no extra minutes for the bench?

Tovarich: They got 6 instead of 5. I gave them that last minute since we weer up comfortably. That's how nice I am.

Reporter: The in-season recruiting period starts tomorrow. Will we get any signings?

Tovarich: I think we can get 2. Hopefully they don't switch on us at the last minute.
