Tovarich: Very even until 4 minutes to go. Then they turned into some super team. You could see the signs coming the entire half though. We were only -2 on the boards in the first half, and -14 after halftime. They got just about everything back. We get their big guy in foul trouble, but that means nothing. The backups dominate the boards too. Can't win when you make 1 basket in the last 4 minutes. They got all sorts of crazy bounces in the second half while we look like elementary school kids getting layups blocked by the rim, one off the side of the backboard from 2 feet, one off the underside of the backboard, I think 5 finger rolls off the front of the rim short. That's totally normal though. No one wants to dunk for some reason. Whatever. Congrats to them I guess.

Reporter: Does this sour the season at all?

Tovarich: No. Everything's gravy. We don't need to do anything here. We ought to be in the 5 seed range still. We've overachieved. I expect we'll be an underdog in the 2nd round, even if we're a 4 seed, unless the other game in our section has an upset. Anyone else in the 4-5 seed range surely is a lot more talented and a more well constructed roster.

Reporter: Is the bench a liability that can be overcome in the tournament?

Tovarich: Yeah, 2/10 today. Brutal even by their very low standards. We have to play them as little as possible. Even if whatever recruits I can sign aren't worthy of starting, which they mostly won't be, having a competent B team next year is critical.

Tovarich: Good to have a by the numbers athletic contest with no surprises whatsoever.

            Reporter: Huh?

Tovarich: OK, some things surprised me. High Point magically got faster at halftime. Zahn was running by their press easily in the first half. Suddenly 100% of the time in the second half, someone ran by and cut him off. Kovacevic started 0/5 on layups after halftime, getting blocked, either by the opposition or the rim before he finally made a few. We didn't shoot many 3's in the second half, or somehow I bet that would have reversed itself too. Luckily we had a nice lead. They didn't shoot great, so they never threatened despite the random problems we suddenly starting having out of nowhere after halftime.

Reporter: Why does everyone full court press you so much?

Tovarich: I've been wondering that too. At Western Kentucky we ran into that just a few times a year. Seemingly most of the SEC does it. Even High Point did it. I wonder if it's that we have no true PG and teams think that's a good advantage they can use over us since we play 3 SG's and 2 PF's. The B team has a true PG, though one I'd rather eliminate the use of. Either that's a strategy specifically against us, or it's one crazy coincidence how we have been pressed for half a game or more probably 20 times.

Reporter: Probably San Diego State in the next round. What do you see in them?

Tovarich: Just saw they start 4 SR's, so they'll have great team unity. On paper, they have more talent than us as you'd expect any team in the 2nd round to have. I haven't taken too close a look yet. We'll see if they win first.

Tovarich: Can't overcome 4/24 shooting 3's and -9 in rebounds. Only +8 in turnovers. That's not good enough when you're so deficient in the other areas. Didn't expect to win but it was disappointing to come out of halftime so well making 9 shots in a row and going on an 18-2 run in the first 3 minutes. Then we suddenly go 5/20 the rest of the game and they just gradually go past us even with only mediocre shooting.

Reporter: Was the bench the biggest problem or both 3-point shooters being cold?

Tovarich: The bench only got 4 minutes for a reason. 2/6 for them isn't really all that terrible. Just Emmett wasn't able to do anything. Sanderson being 0/7 and Horton hitting 3 in a row but 0/9 otherwise is not going to get it done. The big guys tried to carry us scoring, but they only had 8 rebounds between the two of them when their big guys had 22. Rebounding and 3's. The useless bench was its normal self. We know that in advance, so we plan to only get them in when the starters MUST rest. No reason to blame the people who should be at Georgia Southern but Felton inexplicably offered scholarships to.

Reporter: How do you sum up the season?

Tovarich: Couldn't have imagined it going better. We figured out something that works for this team. Obviously not EVERYONE's useless. So the big guys did some good things a lot of the time. We have no C so we didn't rebound well. I'm not sure that makes that big a difference. I had NBA centers at Western Kentucky and we often couldn't rebound. It's something about me. I just don't know what it is. 3-point shooting was inconsistent and not often a strength, so the big guys were often the focal point. This team highly overachieved though. I had no expectation to finish over 6-10 in the SEC, didn't think we'd be anywhere near the tournament. This team surprised me. But we need more than 5 competent players.

Reporter: So what do you hope the roster to look like next year?

Tovarich: I'm no longer thinking that the FR are going to be good enough to start right away. We are going for some good guys but I expect the 15 on the recruiting board to all start disappearing. I have to remember to be patient and not sign people just to use up the scholarships. We'll be picky about who we sign and we'll add some to the 2 scholarships for next year if we must. I'm still hopeful that Mcfarlin and Keller decide to transfer and open up 2 more scholarships now. If not, we'll have to wait for them to graduate after next season and use them. So now we go for depth. Everyone's back except Zahn. He's a huge loss. He has great speed and can break the press for us. Kovacevic can't do that. None of the PF's on the bench if they inexplicably decide to come back can do that. So that's a big need. And even if we find one, it's a FR. It's a big downgrade from a SR. There'll be inconsistency. A B team that isn't up there just killing the clock is a must. It's not going to be fixed this offseason alone most likely. I may have to RS some FR and we may have to continue to play the long game to get the roster where it can compete for a national championship, which of course is the goal here.

I was surprised you were a 4 seed. Maybe SEC bias? But still a successful season. Nobody in the SEC made it past the Sweet 16, which is interesting.

Pretty impressive season, all things considered. With that roster, making the NCAA Tournament at all is gravy, much less winning a game and coming out with the SEC regular season title.

I think I just stumbled my way into some high SOS benefits. Georgia Tech was the overall #1. Georgia Southern and Kennesaw State got in. Nebraska and Temple were 6 and 8 seeds. My Tulsa loss doesn't look so bad with them being a 9 seed. Then the SEC did well getting 6 teams even though none of them really were great. No surprise none of us won 2 games. Extremely deep conference of mediocrity. The RPI had us 5th, one spot below the Mountain West.

Yeah, totally unexpected, right up until the 8-game win streak that came out of nowhere. It makes it slightly harder for Coach Tovarich to trash the bench and previous coach for the roster mismanagement, but I'm sure he'll find a way still.
