Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

Morehead State AD: I'm still not sure this isn't some kind of practical joke (looks around for hidden cameras) but I am stunned and ecstatic to announce Coach Tovarich as the new men's head basketball coach. We didn't have our sights set so high, but Coach Tovarich called us. I almost told whoever to stop prank calling me, but Coach Tovarich for some reason actually wants this job. I was probably just going to hire some unemployed guy who'd be thrilled to have a job. But once he turns this program around, I'm in line for a big promotion to a much bigger school where I'll get paid a lot more so I couldn't be happier.

Tovarich: Hello, all 6 of you here. I know it's surprising. But this program was the biggest challenge I saw this offseason. It's the worst program on paper that made a coaching change, and I look forward to the challenge of turning around one of the worst programs in the nation coming off a 3-23 season.

Reporter: Are you sure you don't need to get your head checked coach?

Tovarich: I am. I know I could have had a lot of nice cushy jobs like North Carolina, the apparent 9th best team in the ACC based on the crazy top 10 rankings I just saw. But I've conquered basketball at the highest level, and the mid-major level. I left Eastern Shore early in the turnaround, and so now I look to establish a new standard for what can be done at a small school. The expectation is to go beyond just getting to the tournament as a 14 seed and getting killed by a big school. We'll get beyond that. I don't know how much beyond that. A national championship may not be realistic, maybe it can be done. We'll see what the peak is here.

Reporter: What happened to going out west?

Tovarich: There were only 3 jobs out there-Sacramento State and Fullerton were not of interest. I did think long and hard about Bakersfield. It's a very high quality roster, and so I wasn't sure it would be too difficult. Also the idea of being an Independent without an autobid is kind of a ridiculous notion. Maybe later in my career that might sound like the ultimate challenge to get an Independent to the tournament.

Reporter: You often gut the roster of your new schools. Can we expect that here?

Tovarich: I cut the following people:
Gerard Tucker 47 OVR SO SF
Harlan Havens 48 OVR walkon C
Tyrone Iti 48 OVR SO PG
Jeromy Gogerty 51 OVR walkon SG

There are 5 seniors and there's no point to cutting the juniors because they don't open up a scholarship any earlier. So we have 11 active players. No one's worth redshirting.

Reporter: What about the recruiting class? Also a transfer?

Tovarich: We got a decent transfer center coming in from Dayton, Attarrius Stivers. The scholarships were all awarded before I could pull them and go for someone useful.

      Patrice Crenshaw 2* #32 C #457 OVR Cincinnati, OH
Antwcan Ravello 2* JC FR PG Cincinnati, OH
Treg Atako 2* #154 SG #682 OVR Lexington, KY

Tovarich: For now, they all remain on the roster. I need some bodies this year. Ravello and Atako probably won't make it to graduation on this roster. Crenshaw may be needed. He needs to start this year for sure, then we have the Dayton transfer, so he can either RS or be cut then.

Reporter: Why should the players stick around if you're just going to get rid of them?

Tovarich: They shouldn't. I encourage any and all of them to transfer. We have 5 scholarships available and if I'm lucky, we'll recruit 4 starters to go with the transfer at C. They didn't have a choice to leave before the season and that's unfortunate. Maybe someone will make a transfer portal some day and it'll be seemingly 24-7-365 transfer-fest. For the next year, we're all stuck with each other and we'll all have to try and make the best of it.

The roster list was assembled before I reversed my decision to keep Gogerty.

Tovarich: There's no sugarcoating how rough this season is going to be. I've said before, like at Georgia that the plan is to immediately get rid of everyone and we cut a lot of deadweight off the bench there and then it turned out some of those starters I inherited were better than I thought. That won't be true here. We will 100% replace every starter this season as soon as next season thanks to having 5 scholarships available, and 100% they will be better players. We may be able to find some so-called "strengths" from certain players and try to lean on them as much as we can, and eventually we may figure out a strategy for how to play that makes us a little more successful that initially I expect, but don't get excited about this season amounting to much of anything.

      Reporter: So who will...

Tovarich: Oh good, the assistant question. I was rather baffled to see both my guys I've had for years stick with me. They should probably both have head coaching jobs somewhere by now and yet, apparently they love me. I'm really not sure why. But they are excellent tape watchers and e-mailers to help with recruiting and for whatever reason they chose to stick with me, they remain.

Reporter: Recruiting resources are pretty limited here. How will you be able to successfully recruit nationally the way you are accustomed to?

Tovarich: I don't expect to. I can't aim for the stars like I could at Western Kentucky and Georgia. We have to be smart about who we might be able to get and not waste any resources reaching for people we have no chance at. I am confident though that we can find 4 guys to start next year at the 1-4 spots, and maybe work on a future starting C since we only get the transfer for the one season.

I can't imagine the multi-day news cycle this would cause in real life. Wild stuff from coach Tovarich. Maybe you can win titles at 5 different schools?

I tend to doubt it's humanly possible to get the kind of recruits you need to win a championship here. I might call it a day at a sweet 16 or something of the like. Even if I could get a bunch of decent 3* leftovers that got overlooked somehow, I don't think that'd get it done.

Tovarich: I came here and saw the average attendance last season was 1,330, and I notice after our first game, we're at 1,332. So, glad to know my 2 national championships were worth 2 extra fans at our first game. I hope the AD appreciates the extra 20$ or whatever we made there.

Reporter: Nothing about the game coach? Aren't you excited to be 1-0?

Tovarich: The point of scheduling Pine Bluff is to be 1-0. That was another job I contemplated taking. They looked like a real challenge as well, and today's game backs that up.

Reporter: So, nothing about this game excited you?

Tovarich: Crenshaw obviously was a bright spot. As I stated before, he's the only one who's an underclassmen who's likely to make it to the end of his career here. What went on in today's particular game means little to me. We're not really here to develop what we have and try to make it better next year. We're here to get 5 better recruits in here, then our Dayton transfer and transform the roster. So, he had a nice game. Stokes broke the press well. DeJesus did a nice job. Our outside shooting was non-existent as I expected it would be. It's all downhill from here though. There aren't a lot of wins on the schedule this season probably. That's not really what I'm worried about accomplishing here this season. The only team left on our schedule worse than the one we played today is Eastern Illinois. We'll probably upset a few teams here and there. But I don't care if we go 3-27. I know I said some of these things at Georgia about replacing everyone and it turned out I couldn't get many elite recruits who could start right away, but I did manage 2 and they were instrumental in winning. The goal here is literally get rid of everyone as soon as humanly possible. 5 scholarships this year hopefully turns into 4 starters next year. They may not be elite recruits, but they will be an improvement, so I may have said it at Georgia and it turned out not to be so true, but this is a different circumstance. Next year I believe it should be another 5 scholarships-2 JR's on the current roster, though hopefully Jolly transfers after the season and opens that up immediately, and then 2 guys I cut, plus we'll have the Dayton transfer leaving. I hope to have terrible team unity the next 2 seasons, because that means we replaced everyone and we're on our way to catching Samford, who are obviously the class of this league. So no, I don't and won't have a lot to say about each individual game. I'll give you a cursory opinion of it if you want, but recruiting is where the meaningful work is being done.

Reporter: Is this season going to test your patience coach?

Tovarich: It's going to be frustrating that we actually have to sit and play out this season before I can begin, but the losing is going to pile up this season and I know and expect that. You media folks will probably test my patience more. Recruiting is the real test of patience. I fully expect to get rejected by about my first 47 choices of recruits before we have to scramble and find some other options. I'm trying not to go too crazy on people we have no chance of, but I want to be ready to pounce on anyone who falls through the cracks without an offer.

Coach Tovarich loves to keep you on your toes, going all the way back to where he started in a small conference. Good luck at Morehead but I'm assuming coach will be winning without issue.

I don't expect to win much in year 1. This roster's quite awful. It's a tad higher rated than Eastern Shore, but I had one really nice guard who could shoot 3's well. This roster definitely is lacking in outside shooting. I'll try to ride my 2* C as much as I can, but recruiting is a bit easy, so I expect to have better talent than the rest of the conference after 2 full recruiting classes.

Tovarich: (sits down at microphone without speaking)

                  Reporter: Uh, coach?

                  Tovarich: Yeah?

Reporter: Would you like to say anything?

Tovarich: Not really. Do you have any other questions?

Reporter: Yeah, was that a tough loss coach?

Tovarich: Yeah, we already had to take 3 people off the recruiting board because they have offers from much bigger schools we don't have a chance to realistically compete with. That's inevitable. We kinda just have to wait to see who slips through the cracks and capitalize on it, but it hurts a little every time we lose one. That's why we're just calling and e-mailing for now and doing some tape watching. We don't have the resources to be wrong, so gotta save some for later in the season. Once the in-season window passes and then everyone settles on their plan B players, we'll see who all has been left for us. There'll be a lot of those kinda of losses this season.

Reporter: I meant the game today coach?

                  Tovarich: (looking puzzled)

Reporter: The game you just played, that you lost?

                  Tovarich: What about it?

Reporter: Wasn't it tough to lose the game?

Tovarich: No, not worried about it.

Reporter: But you had a chance to win?

                  Tovarich: So?

Reporter: Do you think it'll be demoralizing to the team? You had a lead in the 2nd half and a chance to win and they came back at the end and won?

Tovarich: They were 4-24 or something like that last season. They'll be fine.

Reporter: How do you assess the team's play?

Tovarich: Why are you so obsessed with this game?

Reporter: What else would I ask about?

Tovarich: Recruiting. Next year. Something that matters?

Reporter: Because I have to write an article about this game for the newspaper.

Tovarich: Fine. We lose. The other team is better, as almost all of them will be.

Reporter: Why do you think Crenshaw struggled after having such a good first game?

Tovarich: Because Pine Bluff didn't have a 7'2" human giant SR playing C. We can't overcome that. Center is maybe the one position we might possible conceivably ever have any kind of advantage. We even got that guy in foul trouble and he still almost outrebounded the whole team in barely half the game.

Reporter: Do you plan on shooting 34 3's on a regular basis then?

Tovarich: If the other team is going to play zone all game and our C is getting destroyed, yes.

Reporter: Why not full court press sooner when losing?

Tovarich: Because this team has no stamina. I've been able to let the starters go 4-5 minutes into the game before their energy level dips into the low 80% area. These guys are huffing and puffing 3 minutes in. We don't have the depth or the stamina to be pressing. I know I've played a hundred teams who pressed anyway when they shouldn't and we always wore them down. We were down 11 I think at one point. There's no reason to press then. Even if we started a comeback, I'd have to go put the backups in to rest the starters, and the B team are largely getting killed when they're on the court. When we were down 4 I think late and there's only 2 minutes to go, then I might be able to pull that off. It needs to be selective. There's no bonus points for only losing by 6 instead of 22. It counts equally.

Reporter: Why bother fouling at the end there then?

Tovarich: We peaked at being down 8 I think. That's not unovercomable. But they hit almost all their FT's, so that sealed it for them.

                  Reporter: What

Tovarich: (interrupting) Seriously, how many more questions can you possibly have? Have I reached my contractually obligated time allotment yet? (gets up to get on plane to plan recruiting)

Tovarich: (looking blankly at reporters waiting for questions)

Reporter: (rolling eyes at the silence)

Tovarich: Oh right, sorry. Better team won.

Reporter: Was it disappointing to come close and lose?

Tovarich: It doesn't matter if you lose by 3 or 30.

Reporter: Was it good to be back at home?

Tovarich: Yes, I had a productive recruiting visit yesterday. It was a long flight out to California, I got back late. It was nice to be home. Thank you for asking.

Coach Tovarich turning over a new leaf? This may be the most polite I've ever seen him.

It does sound slightly polite, but the intention of the question was playing on our home court, which Coach Tovarich completely ignored, like he has everything actually going on this season.

I think I've officially burned out on playing this game until next basketball season. I was trying to trudge through this highly pointless season of games so I could start fresh but I've played too much and am out of motivation. I'll check in on a few of the threads in here but am on hiatus until November probably.

Understood. You've gotten a lot of games in. This is also your cycle: summer hibernation.

Will you resume here or start afresh?
