Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

Something about the postseason tournaments is vexing for coach Tovaric. I do think the game steps things up in the tournaments though, making unity and other stuff matter even more.

Shocked to see Iowa win the Big 10 tourney, but they'll probably lose round 1. LSU rode that win to a tourney berth. We'll see if they can do anything there.

Tovarich: Good game by the backups, perhaps some nice practice for the starters. Hopefully we got the bad 3-point shooting out of the system.

Reporter: Does this get you out of your recent slump?

Tovarich: No, not really. That was a pointless game. That's what you earn as a 1 seed though.

Reporter: Would you rather have seen Texas A&M a 3rd time?

Tovarich: They had two rough nights against us, so that wouldn't have upset me. NC State is a crazy good 9 seed, rated same as we are. That'll be a tough 2nd round for sure. You'd hope for something easier than that from a 9 seed.

Reporter: What do you think of 11-loss Georgia Tech being in your bracket as a 2 seed?

Tovarich: When you're rated 98 OVR, I guess they excuse a lot of losses still.

Indeed. Perhaps there's an Ivy League rebuild in Coach Tovarich's future.

Iowa overachieved just a little but they tied Michigan State for 1st, even though they're only an 86 OVR. The Big 10 is quite down, though they've improved from last season when they were a 1-bid league.

Yes, Robert Morris beat UMass. Story of the tournament. But what happened in this bracket? Wow.

I think that's the 2nd 16 seed to win. I'd have to go back and find it but one of the early seasons I think Syracuse lost to a 16 and Boeheim retired right after. I meant to look up what UMass is rated because the final poll had them 7th and it was rather baffling they got a 1 seed, while #3 Clemson and #4 Arizona didn't.

I don't think the chaos in that bracket is over. I think I already saw Weber State beat LSU. Seems all the overrated smaller schools got exposed. BYU and Fresno had nice records but were grossly overrated, UMass probably too.

Tovarich: That was the best bench performance I've ever seen, by far. They were awesome. Rough start, so in the end, I'm surprised it was so easy after that.

Reporter: You're down 13-8 and sub in the bench. Was that all that you changed?

Tovarich: Yeah, the starters just were off. The bench came in and immediately went on a 19-0 run. We started 3/10 on 3's. Sanderson was most of the misses. He was just off tonight. We were getting killed on the boards by guards running in around our big guys. None of the starters were all that on, but the bench was beyond incredible. They deserved even more minutes than they got really.

Reporter: Does this give you some momentum heading into the second weekend?

Tovarich: Nope. We killed Arizona in the 2nd round last year, and it meant nothing against Pitt.

Reporter: How about the first meeting with BC early in the season?

Tovarich: I think that was 100-59? I assume they had a bad night and I assume they'll be much better today. I don't think it matters much. I'll have to look back and what all happened in that game, that was 4 months ago probably.

Tovarich: That was a lot harder than the first time, as I expected. I see why we scored 100 the first time. We tower over that team. Not that it helps our rebounding, as usual. But Moody could do whatever he wanted. If they'd play man to man, I'd go down low 100% of the possessions, but they play so much zone, I just can't help but let the 3's fly when they're open.

Reporter: Can you win a championship with that kind of defense?

Tovarich: Of course not. Allowing almost 70% shooting isn't going to work. We forced a lot of turnovers luckily. They were playing a little too fast for their own good there. Not to mention they're too repetitive in their playcalling. I mean, if you want to run the same 3 plays over and over and over, you have to think someone catches on. Denying shots is our best defense, and we need to just not let Georgia Tech shoot 70%, which they're more than capable of.

Reporter: Will that first matchup carry over in any way?

Tovarich: We'll try to do what we did today. Get the ball down low. We tower over them because they're nothing but guards. They're crazy good guards and they're rated 98 OVR as a team for a reason, which I've never seen before, but they're small. We have to make the game about our size and not about their speed and shooting.

Reporter: Why was the bench so bad today?

Tovarich: I didn't exactly give them a lot of chances, but totally different than last week for sure. Since Boston College played their bench so little, I felt the need to keep my starters out there too so we weren't at a disadvantage. We have better depth of course and maybe we can tired them out by the end but Georgia Tech can send wave after wave of good shooters. BC did a good job calling all their timeouts to keep everyone fresh.

Tovarich: This should be a lesson to all to balance your roster. 9 guards isn't smart. That team is rated higher than any team I've ever seen. And they lost 12 games, and that's playing in a conference full of teams who also don't know what a big man is. It's good not to go off the other end of the spectrum either. I noticed a roster this last week that has 7 C's, 5 PF's and 1 SF with zero guards on their roster. I'm stunned they won 7 games.

Reporter: Why did you even bother shooting 6 3's?

Tovarich: I'm not sure. We didn't shoot well from out there. Down to the post should've been the one and only plan. It was particularly easy when we kept their big guys in foul trouble. Neither made it to double digit minutes. If you're so thin there, full court pressing after every basket for the entirety of the game is not smart.

Reporter: 10 seed Indiana. Is that an advantage to have such a weak opponent in the Final Four?

Tovarich: Their fans ought to take over Ford Field, but it doesn't matter. At this point, you either beat 4 good teams, or you are a good team. On paper, they're decent enough. We haven't had a tough game yet in the tournament though, so hopefully the players remember how to play a close game.

Tovarich: Whew. I thought we were good up 72-63 in regulation. I think just under 3 to go, and then we never scored again and they hit the 3 with 12 seconds to go to tie it and we missed about our 7th shot in a row to end the game that would've won it. We had zero momentum going into OT. They made their first 3 shots I think. We finally got going. Then they cooled off. We got 3 offensive rebounds there, all of which were huge. This time we were able to run the clock down.

Reporter: Why do you think they didn't foul you down 5 with 53 seconds to go?

Tovarich: No idea. There's not time left to play that out. I couldn't believe they didn't start fouling. They were only at 4 I think, so they'd have needed to do it 3 times. We got the offensive rebound on our miss and the game was basically over there. They needed to prolong things.

Reporter: Why did you choose Kovacevic to take the FT's at the end when they intentionally fouled?

Tovarich: I've not settled on anyone for that role this entire year. No one's really great at FT's. Sanderson the PG has a wonky motion that I don't like. It can be hard to find the right release point. Also he's young. Horton was our best FT shooter but he only shot like 24 all season, so that's not much of a sample. Kovacevic I feel has the smoothest motion, the least that can go wrong and so therefore the most consistent. And he went 6/6, so my gut was right. They made a couple shots there at the end too so we needed at least most of them.

Reporter: Did all your previous overtime experience this season play a role in this game?

Tovarich: I'd like to think it helped everyone keep calm considering what was at stake. We start 3 seniors and have 5 that play every game and even the 5 sophomores all have pretty good experience at this point. That's why we played the killer schedule. You want to get to this point in the season and not see anything you didn't already see.

Reporter: Do you prefer a re-match with Notre Dame or Marquette?

Tovarich: I've not had a good experience with Marquette yet I don't think. I know they killed us in the tournament at Western Kentucky and we went there the following season and lost again. I don't know if I ever saw them a 3rd time. Notre Dame we blew out in the first half and they shot out of their minds and almost came all the way back in the second half. I'd take my chances with them again I think. Either way, it'll be hard.

Reporter: Does winning or losing the championship affect your decision to go or stay?

Tovarich: Yeah, of course. If we win, that's a good exiting spot. If we don't, I may leave anyway and find something more challenging, but we do lose a ton of experience. Next year's roster will be 5 JR's and 8 FR. So that's still a challenge you'd hope and a rebuilding year, so if we can't finish things this year, maybe that motivates me to return. It all depends on what challenges are out there that are available and what intrigues me. I'm still a west coast guy and I never thought I'd spend 13 seasons out east without ever getting back over there to my people, so we'll see.

Tovarich: It would have been hard to imagine 3 years ago winning a championship with the group I thought I was inheriting. They'd lost 22 games, they were mostly FR. They didn't seem all that heralded. One moved to the bench, but 3 have been starting the whole time. A couple of backups are still around despite all the house cleaning. Some of the new recruits played a big role. This was a solid team last season, and all 10 came back, I admit I would have been pretty disappointed if we didn't win it this year.

Reporter: 4 of your 6 opponents had no big men. Was that the matchup problem that doomed all of them?

Tovarich: You have to do a lot to overcome that. I don't remember from the first matchup, but Notre Dame only had 1 PF tonight, and he got in foul trouble quickly trying to guard people that tower over him, so we had Moody and Kovacevic up against SF's all game. Even the one PF isn't all that tall. We're lucky to inherit Kovacevic at PF who is 6'11"

Reporter: Do you expect Moody to win some national awards?

Tovarich: I'm not sure, but they're not important. This championship is largely because of him. The irony is, I wasn't even recruiting him. We signed Deren in the early window and he was the 3rd rated C that class. It was only when Tchuisi went to Clemson, ironically to play C even though he's a SF because they don't have a C or a PF, that I noticed the 2nd C in the class was sitting there with no offers, so we didn't even go for him until mid-December. Any of 8 or so ACC schools sign that guy, and they're hoisting this trophy next to me. That conference is nothing but guards and this tournament is nothing but matchups, and there's no flexibility on their part with their roster designs. We'd be solid with Kovacevic and Deren splitting time at center, but we wouldn't be this elite. He takes advantage of all these little guys he gets defending him all the time. And for these other teams to overcome that would take some really heroic shooting. Notre Dame shot well today, but the big guys and the ability to draw fouls on smaller defenders canceled that out and then some. I know St. Francis NY is hoarding 7 C's and 5 PF's on their roster, but these big schools need to make it a bigger priority to get a good big man and not just pile up 5* guards.

Reporter: So do you expect to be coaching somewhere else next season?

                                Tovarich: Most likely.
