Tovarich: Ending a streak of 1 game hurts less than 456.

Reporter: Was it nice to have an easier win than the last three close games?

Tovarich: They count the same. Also, now that we've clinched a spot in the conference tournament, these games no longer particularly mean anything.

Reporter: You can win the regular season championship coach!

Tovarich: Cool. I've got like 10 of those. As much as I'd love to wrap up that NIT autobid, it's not why I came here.

Reporter: Do you expect your conference tournament woes to carry over?

Tovarich: Probably, especially when we're so grossly overachieving this regular season.

Reporter: How's recruiting coach?

Tovarich: Thanks for finally asking something interesting. It's been a little stale, just going through the motions. No one's had any new offers in a while. We're a little over our heads on a lot of these guys, just hoping everyone else ends up using up their scholarships elsewhere and one or two of these guys slip through the cracks. I've left 2 of the 6 scholarships unoffered for now. Maybe we'll see if someone worthwhile would like to transfer in that can help. Outside shooting is what I really need and I'm not sure we're making much progress on that. I'm a little worried this won't work out, but I was worried about my Eastern Shore class and it all came together in the offseason at the last minute, and I need that again.

I'd still be questioning that I'm on the right difficulty but I know I am, just these teams are so horrible haha. I mainly win by them being worse than me and so we just sort of stumble into wins by default.

Reporter: Are you upset about the loss coach?

Tovarich: 3 games this week. No time to recruit.

Reporter: How about the game?

Tovarich: We missed the 3.

Reporter: Why did you let Atako take the 3 with the game on the line?

Tovarich: He was 2/4, so it seemed 50-50. I wasn't interested in overtime.

Reporter: What about Crenshaw's game?

Tovarich: He finally played like a true FR 2* player is supposed to play. It happens. It hasn't happened nearly as often as you'd expect. That's why we're light years better than we should be.

Reporter: What changed after you lead 9-0?

Tovarich: Rebounding mostly. It was pitiful. Everything went wrong pretty much and there were were, 7 seconds to go, taking a 3 to go ahead. It was a god-awful team we lost to, but it was a road game, and they're still more talented than us.

Tovarich: That's why I didn't want overtime the last game.

Reporter: How would you describe their play in overtime?

Tovarich: They all turned into Superman in overtime. Crazy. We shot 2/11 and they were 8/10 I think.

Reporter: You looked annoyed with the refs.

Tovarich: Zero fouls on them in the second half. They finally committed 2 in overtime.

Reporter: You got back in the game with the press in the second half. Why'd you stop?

Tovarich: Everyone was exhausted trying to catch back up, but maybe we should have kept going with it. Once we tied it back up, I took it off to rest everyone. That was the only 5 minutes of the game we played well. I just hoped at some point the pitiful shooting would stop, but we're not good at shooting. We were off in the paint, under 50%.

Reporter: With the ball tied at the end of regulation, did you think Crenshaw was the best option even though the defense knew you'd go to him?

Tovarich: I'd rather watch Crenshaw get blocked at the buzzer than watch another missed 3. I've seen enough of those this season. I'd rather not watch another OT at all though, especially one like that. 20 points in 5 minutes was rather insane.

Reporter: Why do you think they can up the score like that?

Tovarich: Maybe he talked to O'Bannon. They didn't need to fire off 2 shots there at the end of full court press up 16. I'll remember it.

Tovarich: Glad that's over.

Reporter: The losing streak?

Tovarich: The week with 3 games so I couldnt recruit. Now we have 5 games in 4 weeks and I can get serious about recruiting.

Reporter: So how big of a deal was it to the end the losing streak?

Tovarich: It wasn't. It's all about the conference tournament. That's all this league cares about. I thought we'd be borderline finishing in the top 8 to make it but this league turned out to be so much worse than I though. The next 5 games aren't terribly important. It's at a neutral site so home court isn't a factor. I expect a lot of teams will really step up the intensity of their play when we get there.

Reporter: Crosswhite is getting to play more?

Tovarich: Yeah, his level of confidence about his place at the program is more in line with reality now, so he can appear here and there when everyone's exhausted or it's a blowout or we need him to intentionally foul.

Tovarich: Good week.

Reporter: Because you went 1-0 this week?

Tovarich: Because I got a couple guys making a visit to campus this week. I'll try to make at least one visit next week. Then we have a week off after where I can really be productive.

Reporter: Does any of your focus shift to this season since it's going so much better than you thought?

Tovarich: No. I still don't foresee much of anyone on this team having a future here. Crenshaw's going to play some next year most likely, but beyond that, it's unlikely unless I fail at recruiting. I at least do feel a little better knowing it doesn't take much talent to compete in this conference.

Reporter: How great was Crenshaw's night?

Tovarich: Tremendous, hopefully it helps him get better for next year.

Reporter: What did you think of them double teaming him?

Tovarich: That seems like a rather obvious response for some of these teams where he's dominating, and once he started 9/9 they went to that, and I'm shocked Tennessee State coach was the first one to come up with that plan. He was still good after that, just had to be quicker and more decisive with the ball rather than slowly backing in. Good experience for next year hopefully.

Tovarich: I assume that's a rivalry win. Those are good.

Reporter: Of course it's a rivalry coach.

Tovarich: Yeah, how dare they 150ish years ago found a school on this same side of the state we're on.

Reporter: Is the improvement after the 3-6 start entirely because of the lack of quality of the conference?

Tovarich: That's a lot of it, but it's mainly using the meaningless OOC games to figure out what your team collectively and individually can and more importantly, can't do. Self-awareness is the most important thing. A 2* true FR shouldn't be dominating, but he is. He's even rebounding lately after some below average rebounding for much of the season. But we don't shoot 3's well, so we keep those to a minimum Crenshaw's plan A and plan B is to recruit a better plan B for next year. We are ok at shots from 1 foot away most of the time. Outside of that, it's not great. FT shooting is pretty below average. We don't drive the ball in well, we're not overly athletic. So we avoid doing things we're bad at and finding advantages where we have them. The biggest thing to resist is shooting 3's against all these teams playing zone. We get pressed a lot too, and we generally do a good job against that. We've had lots of practice at it.

Reporter: Are you going to be scoreboard watching with everyone tied for 1st at 13-4 now?

Tovarich: No.

Reporter: What's the plan for Senior Day on Saturday?

Tovarich: We'll start all the SR's. It'll be a little awkward starting 3 PF's. We'll even get Crosswhite in there. He's not a SR, but maybe he'll take the hint and see that we're celebrating his final game at home and ideally he won't hold that scholarship hostage for another year.

Tovarich: Never seen so many bench points before...

Reporter: Did Senior Night go the way you envisioned?

Tovarich: It's not all about the Seniors, it's about all the people that won't be here next year. You're not being inclusive of people who identify as Juniors.

Reporter: Was the goal to get them all a basket?

Tovarich: Yes. Crosswhite will hopefully look back in fondly next year...from somewhere else.

Reporter: Were you going to keep shooting a 3 at the end until you made one?

Tovarich: Yes. You can do petty things like that when you're up 25 at the end.

Reporter: How's recruiting going to go the next 2 weeks?

Tovarich: We'll bring as many as we can to campus. I'll go out for a visit or two maybe. I think we're good on 2 recruits. I'm hanging on to these last 2 scholarships for some transfers, but we still need a lot to come together at the end. I expect week 2 of the offseason we'll be scrambling. I'm working on scouting some people outside of my 15 targets for that very scenario. See y'all in 2 weeks.

Tovarich: I was just telling coach Dinko I don't know if I've ever shot 26 FT's in a game. I might still be right, since it was only 25. Maybe the refs intercepted that text. That's probably the only team in America we could've played that badly against and still beat. We were lucky to be playing a 1-26 team. Maybe Winston-Salem State should never have become a D1 program for losing to these guys.

Reporter: With the 3-way tie going into the last game, will you be checking the scores of the other games?

Tovarich: Since Tennessee Tech finishes with Eastern Illinois, I'm not going to hold my breath on that.

Reporter: Do you think the tiebreakers will go your way for the 1 seed?

Tovarich: I'm yet to experience a conference correctly apply tiebreakers, so no. The 3-way tie seems likely. Tennessee Tech's 3-1 head to head with us, we're 2-2, and Samford's 1-3, so that's the order we should go in. That's how it'll work out with the incorrect tiebreaker being applied, so they'll get it right, just for the wrong reason. Our last game isn't easy though. We may not be a part of the tie.

Reporter: Why did Ravello take the FT's on the intentional foul at the end?

Tovarich: I didn't know they were up to 6 fouls already, so we couldn't swap Gomes in to that spot in time. It worked out though, since he made both, so maybe should that scenario arise again, we'll give him another chance.

Tovarich: We were bad.

Reporter: At anything in particular?

Tovarich: Rebounding and shooting mostly.

Reporter: Is it disappointing with a potential conference championship on the line?

Tovarich: I had no aspirations of that this season. I see Tennessee Tech hasn't played Eastern Illinois yet, but I wasn't holding my breath on a 1-26 team to help us out.

Reporter: Should you have taken 22 3's?

Tovarich: We weren't exactly executing from 2 either. We needed to try and catch up. Crenshaw had a decent second half to finally get up to 50%. Their blocking was insane. 9 seems low according to the stats. It felt like 15. We didn't have the firepower to keep up with them. We didn't rebound well. They're better and they played like it. We have overachieved a lot and haven't had many games where we played this badly, but this was one.
