I think 6-12 is totally within reach, which would give you a winning record.
Western Carolina, then 16 SEC games and an SEC Tournament game I guess is 18. Quite a few more ranked teams in conference than there were earlier in the season though. I maybe wouldn't pass up 6-10 conference season if it were offered to me.

Tovarich: It's hard to figure out how we were even close in that game. 40-16 rebounds might be the worst I've ever seen in my life and we're outrebounded in 80% of my games as a coach. They got the offensive rebound on 8 out of their 11 misses in the second half. And scored on 7 of the 8. 4 defensive rebounds in an entire half for us is pitiful. They had a guy who only played 14 minutes and he almost outrebounded our entire team for the game.

Reporter: How great is their fitness to play at such a high level for the entirety of the game with only 7 players in their rotation?

Tovarich: Incredible indeed. We pressed most of the second half trying to stay in it and they're amazing as staying fresh and continuing to shoot 65% despite the high number of minutes for everyone. Our guys are exhausted and I had to play the backups more than usual.

Reporter: Is this kind of a shootout sustainable or do you need to slow games down more to stay in them?

Tovarich: It wasn't ideal. We did a decent job shooting 3's to stay in it. Horton even had that nice 4 point play there with 18 seconds to go to make it a 3 point game but they hit all their FT's at the end, another incredible feat after a long game and a lot of minutes. It was the only way to try and stay with them in this one though. We'll try not to let it get like that too often.

Tovarich: Surprising to win that at all, let alone by so much. I guess I should start by thanking the refs for calling 3 fouls on Kovacevic in 89 seconds to start the game. Without that, we'd probably have been throwing the ball down to him a lot more and shooting fewer 3's. 7/12 3's in the first half was nice. Root was like 1/12 on 3's this season before this game, no idea what got into him. Obviously dribbled the cover off the ball in the second half. They made a couple little mini runs, but never got within 10. We did a good job getting to the line in the second half. Rebounding was even, a far cry from whatever voodoo was going on on Monday. Glad we don't have to go back to their place this season.

Reporter: This team has beaten two top 20 teams here at home. Can this team run the table in home games?

Tovarich: No idea. Everyone plays better at home.

Reporter: Why put Kovacevic back in before halftime with 3 fouls?

Tovarich: Yeah, should have known it was pre-determined the refs to call every foul they could on him. I had it happen to Suotamo once last year too. 3 fouls in 89 seconds was crazy enough. Then I sneak him back in with 3 minutes to go before half and he gets a 4th within 35 seconds. Then nothing after halftime. I've seen that pattern once before.

Reporter: Then why'd you do it?

Tovarich: I dare the refs to call 4 cheap fouls on one guy in a half? OK, but really, I know they won't call him for one in the second half. I also knew we'd probably be lucky to make any 3's in the second, so we only took 5 and shockingly only made 1. You can see all these things coming when you've been around this long. Sometimes I still dare to basketball gods or the refs to follow through on it. They usually do, but I will stubbornly fight it anyway, most of the time. Sometimes common sense prevails and we just don't shoot 3's.

Tovarich: If there's such a thing as a must-win road game, it's the worst team in the conference. We don't get them at our place, so this was our only chance. Tremendous 3 point shooting. Kovacevic was great. Zahn was great breaking the press. Horton kind of disappeared, but we had some hot shooters, so we went with them.

Reporter: Vanderbilt coach didn't seem to think you needed to put your starters back in with 2 minutes to go.

Tovarich: Of course I didn't. But there is no one on the B team I am worried about developing or accumulating skills or keeping happy. Maybe Hart runs the B team as the PG again next year, but the rest of those guys are going to be gone one way or another most likely and if they are somehow around, it'll take some serious problems to get them on the court. 4 of those starters will be on the team next year and minimum one has to start, more depending on how bad a job I continue to do in recruiting.

Reporter: Why not slow the game down like against Kentucky when ahead?

            Tovarich: Because Vanderbilt isn't Kentucky.

Reporter: Why are so many players on the team so inconsistent?

Tovarich: They're still young. I know 4 of them started as true FR, but they're still young. And they're not the most skilled guys. They're playing over their heads right now for sure, most games. But clunkers are to be expected for what appear to be a bunch of mediocre 3* players.

Reporter: You have the three next weakest teams in a row the next 9 days. Are they all must-wins?

Tovarich: Must-wins are only declared after we win. It would be a good time to get some W's though because we play four games in a row after that against teams either ranked or with only 3 losses and close to being ranked. Those'll be tougher.

Tovarich: It looks nice that we came back and made it close, but we shot 0% when we had a chance to get within 1 basket. Whatever had to happen to make sure we lost was going to happen. When you're down 29-6 in 4 minutes to start the game, it's obvious the script has been written. We forced a crazy number of turnovers, but we missed just enough FT's, just enough layups, couldn't hit a 3 at all in the first half. We were never going to come back, no matter what we did. Even with 19 extra shots, we couldn't overcome the 67% shooting. It's incredible they're 9-9. And the pressing never stopped. Bruce Pearl better hope they shoot 67% again the next time they see us.

Reporter: Is this a setback to lose at home to one of the weaker teams?

Tovarich: That whole game was a fluke. I'm shocked we didn't lose by 40. There's no carryover with the momentum we built up as the game progressed and no moral victories. It's just a loss, and it's at home to an allegedly .500 team, but everything's gravy. There's really no setbacks.

Reporter: -17 on the boards. Could that have changed the outcome?

Tovarich: No. Nothing could. It was over at 29-6. We just made it look close so we maybe feel less bad about ourselves. It was a great effort, but there was no overcoming them tonight.

Tovarich: Another 60%+ shooting performance. Outrebounded again. Only +3 in turnovers. Needed to be +13 to have a chance. 19 missed shots in the paint for us. I believe they missed 6 and got most of those right back for putbacks. I think we shot 100% on 3's when down double digits and I think we maybe made 1 the entire game down single digits. Got it down to 4 a couple times somehow. Missed 100% of the time when we were. Think they shot 100%. Got a missed FT at the end, but they just got it right back so we had to foul them again. They better shoot 60% the second game too if they're going to drive it in for a layup with .3 to go up 7 already. I won't forget.

Reporter: What can you do differently these games down 23 early and today when the other team is shooting so well?

Tovarich: Tennessee I guess I could have called a timeout earlier or something or slowed it down and seen if maybe I could run out the clock on the magical 4 minutes they put together. Tonight, I guess we needed to press sooner and force more turnovers. I don't know why we missed 18 layups. 6 were blocked. Felt like 12. Nothing we did defensively made any difference. We were right in everyone's face on the 3 point line. They nailed it anyway. We deflected tons of passes. They all seemed to go right back to them. We forced 3 misses on one possession there in the second half. 3 offensive rebounds. They had to score on that possession and were going to do whatever it took. Rebounding better is just something to say. I have zero idea how to actually do it. Then of course, my favorite strategy for this team, is to go recruit better. I worry about the later games in the conference when we play ranked teams because these 9-9, 10-8 teams are incredible somehow. I wonder how they're barely above .500

Tovarich: Lucky to win, for quite a few reasons. Yet another team who shot over 60% against us. Shot 3's well above average, rebounded better. The 13 extra free throws were key, although THREE missed front ends on one and one's in the last 30 seconds? Come on. It'll be time to find a new guy to shoot FT's in the last minute. I know I was spoiled with Galbreath and Stafford even as a FR last year was killer on FT's, but this needs to get better. +11 in turnovers was crucial.

                    Reporter: Was this a must-win?

Tovarich: Absolutely. Because we won. Those last two definitely weren't.

Reporter: Is it going to get the team out of the slump it was just in?

Tovarich: We don't have slumps. We get beat, mostly by teams who are just better, or played out of their minds in that one game. That won't change. It's going to be tough to win any of the next 4, though Mississippi seems to be struggling, so hopefully they can keep that up for another week and a half when when they come.

Reporter: What can you change on defense to stop letting teams shoot so well?

Tovarich: Be more aggressive going for steals. I have long accepted that getting close on jump shooters and getting in their face has no effect on their shooting.

Tovarich: I've been waiting for one of these games where we're totally incompetent at everything and get blown out.

Reporter: Why shoot so many 3's when you're not making them?

Tovarich: After a half of 1/12 shooting 3's, you kind of expect it to turn around magically at halftime. Things usually do, for better or for worse.

Reporter: OK, but you missed your first 10 after halftime too?

Tovarich: Yeah, but then we made 3 in a row after we started 1/22. We barely shot 50% in the paint again, so it's not like missing half our 2's was going to help us get caught up?

Reporter: You can't think of anything different to do defensively?

Tovarich: Well, it's ONLY 4 teams in a row that have shot over 60%. It's not like it's a trend or anything. I could watch all the 3's fly in over the zone instead of in man with a hand in their face, most of the time anyway. Some games it seems like the players just decide not to listen when you tell them to stay tight on a jump shooter.

Reporter: Why do you think they shot two 3's in the final 15 seconds of the game?

Tovarich: That's kind of how you know you never had a chance. Sometimes they'll just kindly dribble the clock out and take their win when there's no reason to shoot. When they fire off a shot at the buzzer and act like it was some critical ending to a game where they desperately needed a basket, you know that they were programmed like robots to destroy you and they'll full court press you up 16 in the final minute just to rub it in. I'm not forgetting about these teams who've done it. We don't get South Carolina again, but I won't forget in the future Dana Altman. Arkansas and Tennessee we get another crack at and it'll be great bulletin board material for us for the week.

Unfortunate end to the season last year, but all things considered I guess this season is going reasonably well at Georgia.

I hope recruiting goes as well as you’re thinking as you trash all the backups on the roster. If not, you may have to end up playing them in the future!

Tovarich: Even first half. The second half? LOL. I'm not sure I've ever seen such insanity. We're on a breakaway. Nah, no dunk, let's finger roll it off, oops it's short. On a breakaway. Zahn was on a breakaway. He got fouled from behind because that would probably have been a make and we can't have that. He was just plain broken I think. 11/30 for a half as a team, 1/10 from 3. They're 23/29. Rebounding should be easy when the other team only has 1 C in foul trouble and 1 freshman PF and they completely dominated us with small forwards and guards outrebounding our big guys. We deflected pass after pass after pass after pass. It made no difference. I think the announcers had a recording of 'but it's recovered' they were saying it so often. 90% of the bounces in the half went their way. They didn't full court press us one possession the first half, then suddenly wouldn't stop after halftime. Crazy, crazy transformation. 5th game in a row the opponent has shot over 60%. I don't know what to do. I can only laugh at all the ridiculousness of that half. They missed, but we'll remember the jumper going off at the buzzer. You'd think a national championship was on the line the way they hurried that shot off with a long pass. No, it was just to try and win by 25, because 23 wasn't enough? The absurdity of the half was enough as it was. Everyone in this conference apparently runs up the score every chance they get. I won't forget any of them. It may take some years, but they'll end up paying for it eventually. They better get us now. We'll be FR next year and we'll have more games like this, but they better get us now. I hope it makes them feel better about themselves. Shooting 23/29 for an entire half should already accomplish that. Not sure what to do to stop this insane streak of insane shooting by every opponent we play, but apparently we'll have to try something different. I know every team almost in this conference is better than us, but that's hardly what's going on. We're not so bad that it's impossible to win some games, but the way these games are going, it's frustrating to know that you're simply trying to do something that's being made impossible. It's as if things are decided before we show up and it's inevitable fate that cannot be changed.

Reporter: What will you change on defense?

Tovarich: I don't have the slightest idea. 5 opponents in a row over 60% feels like some kind of statistical anomaly that shouldn't be humanly possible, and yet it is. I remain convinced there's nothing I can do and if it's going to happen, then it's going to happen. But it would probably be insane not to change something at least.

Reporter: Mississippi is struggling. Is that a must win?

Tovarich: If we win it was. They press relentlessly just like Bruce Pearl did. Just like opponents in decided games are doing up 20. We'll have to throw it back at them. The downside of that is that EVERYONE has better depth than us. The B team is basically worthless. Their main job is to stand around and waste 30 seconds while the starters rest and if they accidentally score occasionally, then great. This plan requires them to play more and that can't be avoided but I'll be damned if I don't try something different.

Eh, I figured conference play would be a struggle. Then we beat Kentucky and started 2-1 and I was sort of optimistic. Nope, insane how every team is playing me. Coach Tovarich probably will have to stop trashing everyone on the roster as some of them might have more a future here than I'd hoped. Ugh. I've had some disastrous looking classes going and it comes together at the end. This one should too.

Tovarich: Nice to win a game where you shoot 5/23 in the second half. It was hilariously bad shooting. It didn't take long to see it would be. Kovacevic was 0/4 on point blank shots in 3 minutes. We missed our first five 3's. Luckily they only shot 25% also, so killing the clock made it impossible for them to come back. We got 4 or 5 offensive rebounds I think and that was another 2+ minutes we could kill over the course of the half. It's not so hard to win when the other team doesn't shoot 60%.

Reporter: So what did you do differently?

Tovarich: Nothing, other than press them back all first half. They got out of it right before halftime and so did we. Can't have our backups running around out there too much. They just had a bad night shooting. It's all beyond our control. Steals are our only defense. Missed shots are just luck.

Reporter: You have a lot of unhappy players. Do you plan on doing any pep talks to pump them up?

Tovarich: Absolutely not. I don't even have anyone to use them on really. But I won't. Akins is a SR. I could use some on him, but he rarely accumlates any kind of statistic. I wouldn't dare let him take a shot unless the shot clock was down to 1 and he accidentally ended up with the ball somehow. Mcfarlin gets about 6 minutes a game. I guess he thinks he deserves more but he doesn't really. Same for Keller. They're both JR's. I'd love for them to transfer and free up a scholarship for me this recruiting cycle, but I'm not sure how often JR's transfer. They could RS and play a season at a location more appropriate for their skill level. That would be the best thing for them. I see 3 other walkons and a SR SG who doesn't belong on the court getting in the vicinity of official unhappyness but I don't care about keeping any of them.
