    Tovarich: Shouldn't play zone.

Reporter: Have you just stopped making in-game adjustments coach?

Tovarich: Wasn't a need to. The players can figure things out. Whether the starters or the bench are out there, we have a coach on the floor. So I just sit back and let them coach, or however those work. At Western Kentucky we started 4 of those the national championship season. I'm not sure I was even necessary. Against opponents like this, I'm not really necessary. We'll have to go power opponents only next season or maybe a couple elite mids like Gonzaga.

Reporter: Are you concerned their PF playing center went for 20 and 12?

Tovarich: Not when you still win by 35. I know some SEC schools will be able to take advantage of our FR C, but we'll worry about that when it happens. I'm not concerned about much until there's something to be concerned about.

Reporter: Do you expect 2 easy wins in Vegas then?

Tovarich: We got the one cupcake school in the tournament of course while the two big boys play each other in the other game. Disappointing not to get 2 big schools. So I expect one easy win, then we'll see. But I've experienced in-season tournament semifinal magic from opponents before.

Tovarich: Still shouldn't play zone. We didn't even shoot from 3 all that well. Still shouldn't do it. Shouldn't press us so much either. We got a game and a half break from that with Cincy and some of the Rice game, but they pressed a bit too much today. Whoever we end up with in the championship, I see we're better than them, but hopefully they'll give us a challenge.

Reporter: Evansville coach didn't like you calling them a cupcake.

      Tovarich: So?

Reporter: Do you worry about giving other coaches bulletin board material?

Tovarich: I've been doing that my entire career, either before or after the game. I don't think it matters.

Reporter: Do you think your team will get overconfident if they continue being undefeated?

Tovarich: Maybe. The freshman need to be humbled somewhere by someone. They probably think this is easy, and it mostly has been.

Tovarich: Well, I said I'd hoped we'd get a challenge, and needing to go on a 7-0 run in the final 48 seconds definitely counts. Was going to go for the tie at the end there, but they had Kovacevic covered well, so he kicked it out to Horton and we didn't shoot 3's all that well during the game, but the winner with 2.8 to go was worth all the other misses.

Reporter: What do you think of the controversy involving Oklahoma State winning by 20 and it not counting?

Tovarich: Yeah, weird. We went to bed thinking we were playing Oklahoma State. It's like someone forgot to confirm the score or something and so the NCAA decided it didn't count and made them replay it and then Illinois won. It threw me off as I didn't really scout Illinois out at all, so I was surprised to see them in the game today.

Reporter: Is this even better than a loss because it might still get the players' attention that things aren't going to continue to be so easy as it has been in most of the games?

Tovarich: Yeah. Ugly, close wins like that where you have to frantically come back at the end should do the trick as well as a loss. We have a tough road game in St. Louis on the way back home, so hopefully they're focused. Then we can all take the Chattanooga game off if we want.

Reporter: You'd scored 92 the last six games. What changed today?

Tovarich: Both teams had a mediocre shooting night. They don't play very fast, so we both shot about 50% and that's the result of the pace. Everyone else was either behind or Georgia Tech was just shooting the lights out on us and so the pace was faster. Can't all be like that. Also, for once no one was full court pressing us the entire game, or ever I don't think.

Tovarich: Surprisingly easy night. You think a Rick Majerus team would usually be better than that. It was a very easy night on O-fence. Usually I'm screaming for people to just dunk the damn ball, but there were no shortage of dunks tonight. We finished the game 16/16 and probably 14 or those were dunks. I don't know what their full court press style was but it was horrible. We just tossed the ball over them like we do against a half court trap and we had all sort of uncontested dunks. We'd have shot 80% if we didn't bother with 3's, but I just can't help myself sometimes.

Reporter: Do you think St. Louis should get an arena on campus?

Tovarich: For sure. I had no idea they played in the Blues arena. They're really not big or good enough of a program to be using a professional arena.

Reporter: Do you still think the team can take the Chattanooga game off?

Tovarich: Well, they're off the schneid now, so maybe they've got some momentum. It's a nice breather after Christmas before the real games begin.

Tovarich: Good scrimmage. Cupcakes are now out of season. The rest of the games are going to be tougher, I assume. Another good dunkfest of a game. Except Kovacevic. He won't be able to get an NIL deal with Dunkin Donuts. Maybe he had some childhood trauma dunking. I don't know. Moody dunks it quite aggressively. I love it.

Reporter: Maryland is suddenly on a 2-game losing streak. Are you sure they'll be a tough game?

Tovarich: No idea anymore. Crazy upsets happen, like Georgia Tech losing to Marist even though they've got the highest rated roster I think I've ever seen.

Reporter: How concerned are you about rebounding the rest of the season?

Tovarich: We haven't had many really pitiful rebounding efforts since Georgia Tech and Savannah State. I think it's getting better the more the FR get some experience. There'll probably be some more -14 games but we force a lot of turnovers even without pressing. That's the equalizer for us.

Reporter: There are only 2 other ranked teams in the SEC. Does the conference seem worse than last year?

Tovarich: It wasn't even that great last year.

Tovarich: Tough win. Back and forth all game, then suddenly about midway through the second half, they couldn't hit a shot for 5 1/2 minutes and we went on a 14-0 run during that time I think, ran some clock, so-so on FT's at the end, got a little lucky we blocked a shot after a turnover late. Hard fought win though.

Reporter: Is this team ready for conference play?

Tovarich: They have seen plenty of good opponents, though turns out we are rated higher than all of them, which I don't at all understand. We'll have some duds in there somewhere, and our FR will look like FR and play like it. They're as ready as they can be.

Reporter: Do you expect to win the conference outright after sharing it last year?

Tovarich: We'll see how it goes. The depth of the conference made it tough to run away with it last year, but too soon to say.

Tovarich: We've pulled another one out in the end. Eventually the law of averages says we'll lose one of these, especially when we shoot so terribly. The free throw line kept us in that one.

Reporter: How big was Horton at the end?

Tovarich: Probably single-handedly won that game. Two offensive rebounds in the last two minutes. No idea how a little SG is running around in the paint and grabbing rebounds amongst the trees. But one lead to a 3 by him, then the second lead to them having to intentionally foul to put us at the line, where he hit 3/4 at the end. One of the last people on the court you expect to be grabbing offensive rebounds.

Reporter: How about the center's rebounding?

Tovarich: Yeah, Moody and Deren combined for 2 and Horton had 3 by himself. Insane how that all worked out. I keep saying they're going to look and play like FR at some point, and they did. Kovacevic grabbed 14 to make up for it. Horton made huge plays. Sanderson may need to stop shooting 3's. He's supposed to be better at it but just isn't for whatever reason, minus an occasional hot game. Root hit 3 3's. The veterans really picked up the FR today.

Reporter: How about your blocking down low?

Tovarich: I can't remember the last time we outblocked any semi-competent opponent. It's rarer than out-rebounding one I think. It felt like they had more than 4, but it's hard to remember.

Reporter: Bruce Pearl didn't like the free throw disparity. What did you think?

Tovarich: I remember early in my career being on the wrong end of a lot of lopsided free throw numbers, but it's getting rarer lately. We were able to get 3 of their guys sitting on the bench with two before halftime. I think that's the balance when you full court press so aggressively and never-endingly that you're leaving people down low 1 on 1 or 1 on 2 and it leads to more fouls. He should know the trade off of what he's doing.

Tovarich: It was inevitable we'd play like garbage for a game and someone would get us. Just wasn't expecting it here. Hilariously bad 3-point shooting. We were behind the defense 3-4 times and missed layups. 8 missed FT's is a lot for us for 14 attempts. I could see a long way away it would cost us. We are very good at shooting FT's and when the misses unexpectedly pile up, like when we were 2/9 in the national championship, we miss just enough to lose by 1. We needed a few more seconds there at the end, looked like someone grabbed the offensive rebound on our predictably missed 3 but not enough time to go back up with it.

Reporter: Did the pressure of being undefeated finally catch up with them?

Tovarich: I don't know if that's why we shot 2/17 on 3's or missed open layups. Maybe it was, who knows. It took a 60% shooting performance against us, 50% on 3's, us being 2/17 on 3's, missing 6 FT's and shooting under 45% for someone to get us by 1. It happens, you can see it coming but you can't necessarily stop it. We tried, we forced 20 turnovers. We've been on borrowed time for a while, probably since Georgia Tech. We were lucky to get Illinois at the end and survive Maryland and barely got by Tennessee. No one wins ALL the close games, but this one's rather surprising.

Tovarich: Kind of a must-win as far as conference road games are when you got a team starting 4 FR. Just like last year, they don't come to our place, so it really would have been killer in the standings to end up 0-1 against what will likely be the last place team in the conference.

Reporter: What got into them at halftime?

Tovarich: As usual, I have no idea. They came out like berserkers. It started before half. I think they ended on 10-2 run and they came out starting about 17-6 I think. Then about 5 minutes to go, they finally cool off and we go on a 15-2 run to go up and never gave it back.

Reporter: They often played 2 C's at once. How unusual was that?

Tovarich: Yeah, they have 3 on the roster. Maybe that's why so many ACC schools don't have any because LSU is hogging them all. That's partly why they dominated the boards, and because despite one of their C's being a FR and 2 SO's, my FR C's can't get a rebound to save their lives. Kovacevic really picked up the slack there, even though he couldn't score. It'd be nice to get both, rather than having one guy get all the boards but is cursed scoring and one who scores well but can't rebound to save his life.

                      Reporter: How about Fontenet?

Tovarich: Crazy. 3/3 on 3's. He was 1/1 on the season before today. Maybe I need to let him have more. He's supposed to be ok at 3's but the standard for that by a PF is a little lower. I got him a couple extra minutes just because I wanted to sit Moody a little. He needed some rest, but I needed Kovacevic at C to get some rebounds because those were pretty lopsided in the second half.

Reporter: Should you have bothered with 2-point shots in the 2nd half?

Tovarich: Yeah, probably not. 13 made FG's in the 2nd half and 7 were 3's. And those were late. We started 2/9 on 3's and finished 5/7. Moody made a couple layups down low but mostly we flailed inside the arc. Kovacevic was stuffed just about every time he shot, which didn't seem coincidental when it happens that many times.

Reporter: Lots of recruiting visits this week. How's it going overall?

Tovarich: Duke's on the #2 recruit in the country now, so unless we pass Duke after the visit, we'll have to accept defeat on that one and go to plan B at PG. Louisville is on our backup plan there, so we'll see if we can get ahead of them once we offer. I have no plan C at PG. We'd have to just roll with what we have there. Our first choice at SF, we're the only offer, but he seems to prefer Georgia Tech or Florida State still. We have a couple backup plans there, but I'd like him. It could go well or go really really badly. I can't say for sure yet.

Tovarich: Grateful all the big guys were making their layups. Mississippi State's 3-point shooting felt a little crazy at times. Nice of that Gary guy to cool off in the second half for us and play like a human being. I thank them for full court pressing us those first 10 or so minutes. Kovacevic dissected it perfectly. It had been a few games since we'd been pressed. I was a little worried. Normalcy has returned.

Reporter: This same pattern emerged about this time last season where the opponents shot 60% or more. Do you think it's a coincidence?

Tovarich: Doesn't seem like it, does it? I'll take a repeat of last year if it involves us winning 8 in a row to finish the regular season. We are a little better equipped to handle 60% shooting by opponents, unlike last year.

Reporter: Alabama has plummeted out of the rankings, so it's just you and Kentucky. How is the conference 3rd in the RPI?

Tovarich: I suspect we'll end up 5th or so like last year. Florida's really underachieving. Most teams have a solid record, so I suspect the depth is similar to last year.

Tovarich: I liked them better last year when they sucked. They came out of halftime blazing. They started 9/11, then luckily something magically snapped and they finished 4/14. Once we turned the press on down 6, they became turnover machines, which was good, because we couldn't stop the shooting. We couldn't get a rebound. We were borderline inept. Then Sanderson all of a sudden hit 4 3's in a row and we went from down 6 to up 6.

Reporter: Are you content with the lineups as they are?

Tovarich: Yeah, mostly. 1 rebound from a C in an entire game is sad. Kovacvic might be better served at C, but I can't have Moody standing more than 2 feet away from the basket. Kovacevic doesn't much belong any further away either though. We're hot and cold shooting 3's, mostly cold, but we get by. That luck will run out at some point. It did against South Carolina. We figure out how to do just enough to get by. There's some skill and some strategy, but there's some luck too. Nothing needs to be changed right now.

Reporter: How did the recruiting visits go?

Tovarich: We abandoned the overall #2 recruit the PG. Duke wanted him, so Duke would have gotten him no matter what we tried. We've moved on to our backup plan there. I think he'll pick us over Louisville. We're ahead now and it hopefully should not change. We're still 3rd with our SF, but his only offer. I hope that'll stay that way. Georgia Tech though is 1st and half their roster is going to declare for the NBA, so I am 99% sure they'll have a scholarship available and it'll be offered as soon as the off-season begins. So we'll likely end up going for our second choice there. He has no offers either. I don't know what better recruit San Diego State thinks they might get though, so I'm baffled they haven't offered. I think we'll be ok on plan A of a PG and a SF.

NC State, Oregon State, Nebraska, Colorado, and Georgia all being quite good, possibly title contenders, is a weird world to live in.

This Georgia "rebuild" has really progressed much quicker than I think most folks would expect.

Yep, the power of team unity is a wonderful thing. NC State and Nebraska start 3 SR's and a JR, Oregon State starts 5 SR's, so they ought to lose 20 next year when they start over. Colorado is a little befuddling. They start 2 FR rated only 73 but appear to have played a mostly easy schedule so far. They have 6 more ranked teams and I expect 16-1 to turn into 20-9 pretty soon.

As for Georgia, I don't know why last year went so well. My talent is immensely improved this year, but I think I've just reached the point of experience in the game where I know too much about what works, what doesn't and just a little familiarity with my players makes it easy to play to their strengths and weakness.

Except rebounding. I will never figure out how to rebound on this game.
