    Tovarich: (sits silently in depression)

    Reporter: Uh, coach?

    Tovarich: Yeah?

    Reporter: You won. What's wrong?

Tovarich: The #1 SF went to Clemson.

    Reporter: OK? You won!

Tovarich: I don't care. We were #1 on the #1 SF the entire time and Clemson snuck in at the last second and took him.

    Reporter: Did anyone else sign?

    Tovarich: Yeah.

Reporter: Want to tell us about him?

Tovarich: Sure. Ty Deren 3* #3 C, #103 OVR from Atlanta.

Reporter: Want to say anything about the game?

Tovarich: It was a weird game. The first half no one missed much. Back and forth. No one ever lead by more than 3. Second half everyone went incompetent. Kovacevic was 0/3 in the second half with 2 blocks. Sanderson tried two 3's in the second half and they were both blocked. The backups came in and they were foul magnets. I think they got fouled on every shot they took. Crazy. We did ok enough at FT's at the end there to hang on. Doesn't get us our SF recruit though.

Reporter: Might you sign anyone else here this week?

Tovarich: Doesn't look like it. We have to regroup and find another SF. I had no backup plan there. Might need a SG or PF to replace him. I felt good about getting him. It's gutting.

      Tovarich: (silently depressed again)

Reporter: Uh, did you really expect to win that coach?

      Tovarich: Nope.

      Reporter? So???

      Tovarich: Recruiting.

      Reporter: Oh. What happened?

Tovarich: Everyone on our board went elsewhere. We even had someone choose Rice over us. We are having to totally start over. If we can't salvage this somehow, the program will be set back years.

Reporter: So, how about this game?

      Tovarich: Didn't play well.

Reporter: Would you like to elaborate?

Tovarich: Kovacevic was 2/8 in the first half. We were grossly outrebounded in the second half. Every time you touched their center it was a foul. Etc etc etc.

Reporter: So how do you feel about expectations for the rest of the season?

Tovarich: I still don't have any. Recruiting was the key to the season.

Tovarich: We're lucky the refs gave us a nice dose of free throws. We needed them all. They missed the tying jumper with 20 to go and we go the rebound and hit our 2 FT's to hang on. Ugly 3 point shooting for us. Didn't force a lot of misses, but got the most important one.

Reporter: Are you done bemoaning recruiting and back to caring about the games?

        Tovarich: No.

Reporter: Do you now need to focus on keeping some of the bench players around for next year?

        Tovarich: No.

Reporter: Anything else you'd like to add about today's game?

        Tovarich: No.

Ugh - that's hard. Coach Tovarich is in good company, particularly with Dinko. He seems to have a way of losing out on every single early recruiting and then salvaging it with a bunch of JuCo 3*s late in the recruiting cycle.

Yeah, the long game recruiting is easy. These in-season signees I am not good at. I think, among other things, I need to not load so many games into November so I have more time to recruit before the early window.

Yeah, and CHoops has a bug where if you have a game during the 1st day of the week, you can't recruit that week at all. So I've lost out due to that as well.

Tovarich: It didn't take long to see what kind of otherworldly performance we were up against in the second half. I think they started 15/18 shooting. We were able to hang in there. We had 2 layups and a jumper to tie or take the lead with about 2 minutes to go and conveniently missed them all. We missed 6 FT's in the second half. They missed 3 FT's in the final 30 seconds and get ALL 3 rebounds so we have to foul them all over again. It took 8 things to determine the game there at the end and ALL 8 went in favor of Miami. If it was just 6/8, I think we were in a good spot to overcome it but I can't say I'm surprised to lose that one. Just felt all too convenient the way it happened, which is frustrating.

Reporter: What could you have done different defensively?

Tovarich: Nothing. Zone wouldn't be smart when they shoot 6/11 on 3's in the second half. We were allegedly tight on all the 3 point shooters and jump shooters. They're just an amazing unranked 8-3 team apparently.

                Reporter: How about rebounding?

Tovarich: Recruit a better rebounder. We were up 2 on the boards at halftime, and then ended up -6. Just part of the perfect storm for them in the second half.

Reporter: Do you expect to salvage the recruiting class?

Tovarich: Too early to tell. I'll roll over some scholarships if I must. I'll be picky, and we'll adjust the plan for next season with some current starters if that's how it has to be done.

You mean the Sunday game bug? I've noticed when you have a game on Sunday, you can't visit or scout in person that week. I look up the dates in a calendar to make sure I don't play any OOC games on Sunday because of that. But I've never had it where I just plain can't recruit at all unless it's a week with 3 games, which only happens during conference season occasionally. Calling and e-mail should always be available despite the Sunday glitch.

Unfortunately for me, the Sunday glitch meant zero recruiting activities at all for the week. I've had it happen 2-3 times.

Have you simulated into Monday and checked again? I don't think I've ever run into that.

Tovarich: I guess we should've slowed it down a little there. 13 point leads usually feel safe with 3 minutes to go. Then they go on a 9-0 barrage in under a minute. Insane shooting by them in the second half. Luckily Sanderson bailed us out. The big guys seemed destined to struggle. Kovacevic eventually accumulated some points, but 10/21 in the paint against that cupcake school is pitiful. I'm surprised to see only -8 in rebounds. It felt far worse. At least we won somehow, I guess.

Reporter: Is this team ready for SEC play?

Tovarich: No. It'll be a struggle I am pretty sure.

Reporter: Are the big guys plan A and shooting 3's with Sanderson and Horton plan B?

Tovarich: For now. Against real competition, the big guys will be tougher to get going, especially after nights like tonight. If we played like that against Kentucky or Florida, we'd have been beaten by 25.

11-3 with what, 18 regular season games to go?

I think 6-12 is totally within reach, which would give you a winning record.

Tovarich: I thought we might be in for a long night when they started 5/5 and got the rebound on their first miss and we were down 14-6 right off the bat. So it seemed like a good time to turn the press on and then we dominated the rest of the half. Second half was quite a change. I wish I knew why the wild swings, but we went from 6/14 on 3's to 1/12. Zahn who was 7/7 in the first half missed his first 5 after halftime before getting on the board at the end there. Kovacevic dominated both halves. I think Horton maybe made one shot after halftime. Hart couldn't hit the iceberg with the Titanic.

Reporter: Is it concerning you don't really dominate these smaller schools?

Tovarich: It would be nice to do that for once. Our two games in Iowa were our best performances on defense. We weren't much on defense today. They shot well after halftime. I've got low expectations the rest of the season, especially now that we're up against 4 top 25 teams and three others who only have 2-3 losses. The SEC is definitely a big step up from last season.

Reporter: How do you feel about the team at the halfway point compared to when you first saw the roster?

Tovarich: As I said back then, we'd likely figure something out. We won maybe 2 games more than I thought. Temple, Georgia Tech and Nebraska are wins I wasn't really expecting. Tulsa was one I thought we'd be able to get. I'll still be surprised if we can go .500 in conference, but most of Felton's recruit are at least semi-useful. Some guys like Hanavan get in somehow but you'd like to think no one too awful gets a scholarship at Georgia. Nothing's ideal about the roster makeup. Starting 3 SG and 2 PF is less than idea for sure. The B team being a PG, a SF and 3 PF is extremely odd and limiting. We're working to fix it. It's not going as fast as I'd hoped. Recruiting is not going well. But we have all the starters back except Zahn. And I at least have a center to start and Kovacevic can play at PF, his real position. We'll try to find more starters in recruiting. That's still best long term and even though we may get more wins than I thought this year, long term is still the main priority.
