Tovarich: Another subpar performance. Outside shots were brutal. Luckily the big guys were all pretty dominant, at scoring anyway. Rebounding left something to be desired as usual. Without that barrage of turnovers in the 2nd half there, that might have been a different outcome.

Reporter: What was the defensive plan in the 2nd half?

Tovarich: Just double team anyone who looks like they can shoot a 3. They finally cooled off late, but they were already 6/12 at halftime and then came out and made their first three after halftime too. I couldn't watch any more of it, so we doubled every guard and we got a few turnovers there off the deflections, and that allowed us to have 11 extra shots in the game, which was a big difference

Reporter: You seemed irritated with the refs.

Tovarich: A 10-1 foul disparity is irritating for anyone.

Reporter: 25 days until Selection Sunday and you have just one game coming up in a week and a half. What do you work on during all this down time?

Tovarich: I've got a lot of recruiting visits to make. We don't have the best history in these Senior Day home games to end the season, so hopefully we do better in the actual game, even if it has no meaning beyond it being for the Seniors.

*I can't see how to respond to the comments, it doesn't seem possible, but I just noticed the America East is the "Metro Atlantic" which bumps the America East schools for small to mid. I'm usually careful not to do that during my conference planning, but I apparently missed that one.

Tovarich: There isn't a whole lot to criticize there.

Reporter: But would you like to anyway?

Tovarich: I'm so excited about Wilkins' triple-double that I won't even do it today.

Reporter: SEMO coach complained about your tactics there at the end of the game.

Tovarich: Well, obviously this game was about our SR's, so it's pretty lame he would try to make it about him. The intentional fouling 5 times in the last 10 seconds to get the ball back and give Wilkins an opportunity to get that 10th assist was unusual, for sure, but definitely worth it. Farley did a great job hitting the jumper at the buzzer. If SEMO coach wants to use it as motivation in some future matchup, he's more than welcome to try if he really think it'll make any difference for him.

Reporter: With a long wait for Selection Sunday and this team's regular season over, what do you expect next year's lineup to look like?

Tovarich: Hale is obviously our PG. I expect Crawford the backup is likely going to transfer. We'll need a backup there. Dillard is an option. I'm not sure what to do with him. He's odd in that he's a 6'8" SG, but he has no real outside shooting skills. He has no interior skills either. He's probably a really good mid-range jump shooter, and I don't have a lot of interest in those. By all accounts, he's rated as a really good player, but it doesn't seem to translate into productivity, and by productivity, of course I mean, scoring. We have Pippen RS'ing this year and he's an awesome 3-point shooter, so despite what the ratings say, he's our SG next year. Dillard could be his backup too possibly. Luz, our backup SF is a SR, so we just have Crandle. I need a backup there. That's another option for Dillard to back up. We're set with the bigs. We lost Wilkins, but we have Carbaugh, then Riley is RS'ing this year. We have 2 solid C's. We're mainly aiming for some depth with the 4 scholarships, probably 5 with Crawford leaving. We're finally at the point where I have the depth to utilize the redshirting, so there should be no more rebuilding.

Tovarich: Luckily it's that time of year where style points don't matter. It wasn't pretty, but we won. It'll need to be a lot better in 2 days against I assume Notre Dame, but an upset would be appreciated there.

Reporter: What are your thoughts on being a 4 seed?

Tovarich: I shouldn't probably be shocked, but I was irritated about that. If we're #1 in the RPI, then our SOS must be ok enough. I guess the RPI of our "conference" is holding us back. Then the pollsters rank us 6th, but we're essentially 13th from the committee? I think we would be the least talented team on the court in the 2nd round no matter what they seeded us though, so maybe we'll match up well with Notre Dame. It just would have been nice to be a 1 or a 2 and get to play all those losing teams who got in and we could've had a little easier time than we just did.

Reporter: Is Wilkins the designated FT shooter at the end of close games?

Tovarich: I couldn't remember if we even had one or not. We played so few close games this year. The big guys are the only ones who get to the line with anything resembling regularity, so they're the one I feel most comfortable with.

Reporter: What do you need to do better in the 2nd round?

Tovarich: Rebound, of course. -3 against Riverside is rough. We had 3 3's blocked. Crandle's windup can be slow I know, but we can't have that happen, and then we turned the ball over 7 times. That's really high for us. +1 in turnovers definitely is not going to be enough to get it down. Allowing almost 60% shooting won't get it done.

Let's hope the players step up for Notre Dame. I hope they don't have a pair of 7-footers in the frontcourt so you have some hope of rebounding balance.

Tovarich: Great to make a sweet 16 for the first time in the program's history. I can't say much for our perimitor defense, but we took advantage where we had one. Wilkins was a foul magnet in the first half.

Reporter: How important was it to get their big guys in foul trouble early in the 1st half?

Tovarich: Big guys probably needs quotation marks. That's a surprisingly short team. No true C, just 3 PF's who are all 6'8". It didn't stop them from outrebounding us still, of course, but they had to play small ball and shoot a lot of 3's to compensate for their roster shortcomings. We were able to score at will in the paint those last 10 minutes of the first half. All the FT's helped too.

Reporter: How big was the size advantage in the turnover battle?

Tovarich: I'm not sure that had much to do with it. It was the guards turning it over all the time. We have no size advantage on the perimitor. Grady and Carbaugh got 2 steals each just because they caught some passes that we deflected on the way in.

Reporter: Coach Brey thinks the refs were biased with their 18-3 FT disparity.

Tovarich: Perhaps he shouldn't have full-court pressed then. We were aggressive against it and they settled for jumpshots, as they had to once they were in foul trouble. He perhaps should recruit a C.

Reporter: Do you have a preference between Indiana and Washington?

Tovarich: I'll take an 8 seed over a 1 any time, but we'll see. I'm sure they're both good. We've played enough top talent though that we feel confident we can play with anyone.

Tovarich: Sorry if you like defense. Neither team played a whole lot of that, until the last 3 1/2 minutes when we combined for a whole 2 points. I already knew we could play with anyone, but if the committee would like to figure it out now and apologize for making us a 4 seed, that's just a bonus.

Reporter: Is the seed a motivation for the team?

Tovarich: It sure as hell is for me. But just being in the Sweet 16 and now having a chance to go to a Final Four is enough on its own.

Reporter: What changes did you make on Spooner?

Tovarich: Jeez, he had 20 in the 1st half, and I told them to double team him every time he touched the ball, and it made no difference because he fired off a shot instantly every time. I'm not sure we ever executed the actual double team. I guess in the end, the only thing that stopped him was him sitting on the bench and only playing 16 minutes for reasons I can't comprehend. He'd have scored 40 easily.

Reporter: This team isn't tall either, just like Notre Dame. Was that a big advantage?

Tovarich: Not in rebounding of course. Nothing can help us there, but yeah, another roster with no C, just 2 PF's who are only 6'8". It's baffling roster construction. We scored well in the paint, we got to the line, at least compared to them a good amount.

Reporter: What if I told you before the season you'd be playing New Hampshire to go to the Final Four?

Tovarich: I'd have told you to get back in the looney bin and get back on your meds. Crazy, huh? And New Hampshire doesn't know it, but they're the team I've been getting worked up about being seeded higher than us. Their schedule doesn't compare to ours. Their talent isn't as good as ours and the committee always had them above us. They can't help it but I'm fired up to show the committee how bad of a job they did. Also, better New Hampshire than Duke or North Carolina or someone crazy elite. It's unbelievable to have such a small school with a Final Four on the line.
