Tovarich: I guess we must be in a good place as a program to play like garbage on the road and still manage a win. There's no standard for judging the game that says we deserved to win, other than that we somehow did. It was brutal at times.

Reporter: Were you ever going to put a red light on the 3-point shooting?

Tovarich: I supposed I should have. It was obviously bad. We mirrored the Hawaii game where we made our first and missed every one for the rest of the half. It was eerily similar in fact.

Reporter: How about Spears with 9 rebounds?

Tovarich: I'm not sure whether to be impressed our SG had 9 boards, or embarrassed that our starting big guys combined for 6? I don't know if there are words in English to accurately describe the futility of rebounding. Anemic? Pathetic? I don't know if those words accurately capture it.

Reporter: Is there still a net positive with Atkinson because of his scoring outputs?

Tovarich: It's definitely a necessary balance. If he rebounded better, and we gave up 10 less points on putbacks, then he wouldn't need to score so much, so one tends to cause the need for the other. St. Mary's and USC are a big step up, so we'll need to be far better at pretty much everything to have a chance in either of those games.

Tovarich: I don't know how we keep escaping these games. It's inexplicable. The back and forth nature of the game made it feel like it was going to come down to who was slightly ahead when it was time to start fouling people, and that happened to be us. We started out nicely, up 6 in the first half. Then we go in down 5. Then we come out on fire and go up 9. They gradually work their way back and take the lead, then we took it back. Then at 40 seconds to go we happened to be up 4, so they started fouling and we did just enough.

Reporter: You shot 11 FT's in the last 40 seconds and made 7. Is that an acceptable percentage?

Tovarich: Ideally 8 there would be nice, but it happened to be just enough. It helps we got an offensive rebound on the one miss and Atkinson was able to go to the line, only made 1 of 2, but that one was the difference, so that when they hit that 3 with .9 to go, we still had the lead and no time for them to foul us again.

        Reporter: Who needs rebounds?

Tovarich: It remains a mystery how it doesn't cost us. We had a whole 5 at halftime, so we improved in the second half with 9. There's something about Atkinson on the boards. We rebound better when he's out of the game. He has the world's worst timing. As long as he keeps scoring efficiently, we'll overcome it sometimes. I knew that human giant they had playing center was going to cause problems on the boards. They really should've played him more and they'd likely have won. We were surely outscored badly when he was on the court and we mostly took advantage when he was sitting.

Reporter: Is confidence in 3-point shooting restored after two bad games?

Tovarich: If they're going to play exclusively 2-3 zone, we'll keep shooting most of the time.

Reporter: What can you do to upset USC and finish this road trip 4-0?

Tovarich: As much as I thought we might be outmatched today, I have no doubts we are there. We'll have to shoot like crazy from 3, Atkinson's going to have to rebound better. Like, maybe he can aspire for 3 the next game? We'll have to create a lot of turnovers. We'll have to hope they overlook us.

Tovarich: I'm pretty speechless going 4-0 on this road trip, quite unexpected. Moving this team to D1 has been easier than expected for sure. It's stunning.

Reporter: What's wrong with basketball coach?

Tovarich: Everyone's sloppy with the ball. They turn it over pretty easily. They're predictable in their movements. They have something working, but they don't stick with it. They don't value big guys, and big guys don't play much defense. Everyone's obsessed with the 2-3 zone and leaving all our good 3-point shooters open. They're not aggressive enough getting themselves to the FT line.

          Reporter: Can you win out?

Tovarich: We have 9 games left and only North Carolina A&T has a winning record, so maybe? It's not something I'd have said before the season. I'd have taken 12-10 right now if you offered it to me back then. It's unbelievable to be 16-6. Still waiting for the RPI to come out so I can see how it's going, and see if we free-fall here because of our lack of SOS. Or if we just free-fall because we don't have many games left compared to most people. Such if life as an Independent.

          Reporter: How's recruiting going?

Tovarich: I'm not sure. Everyone we're going after is interested in other schools, but there may be no offer coming. I imagine we're going to find 3 solid guys.

Tovarich: We probably wouldn't have beaten too many teams tonight. We were lucky to be playing one of the few.

Reporter: Why were you squinting at the refs every time they ran by in the second half?

Tovarich: Everything was a foul in the first half. Then Grand Canyon didn't commit a single foul until there were 59 seconds left. There were 24 FT's in the game, and 19 were in the first half and 2 of the 5 after halftime were after they intentionally fouled us 6 times in the last 30 seconds. I was just wondering if they were the same crew from the first half or if some walruses came along and poked all their eyes out so they couldn't see any fouls anymore.

Reporter: How would you assess the quality of the rebounding?

Tovarich: 10 by Borders is exceptional. 2 by Atkinson in 20 minutes is especially feeble. I love his scoring though. Not much of anyone could score tonight. I'll take it the way it is I guess because it works well enough.

Reporter: Now that the RPI is out, what do you expect to learn?

Tovarich: I'm thrilled to see it finally. We're just inside the top 50. But now we play 9 pretty lowly rated teams in a row, 8 of which have losing records, so this is going to be a great way to see how far we fall from the weak schedule we have left. The bigger schools are in conference season and have way more games than we do left too, so this is exactly what I need to see for future scheduling.

Yes, they were the second created school slot. We replaced "UL-Calcutta" and Savannah State. Then Winston-Salem State became South Dakota, SFNY became North Dakota and Hartford became NC Central. Those seemed like the 4 most relevant programs of the new additions to D1 since the game came out.

Tovarich: Even more so than Grand Canyon and Riverside, there can't be many times we'd have beaten playing like that. We played poor defense, we rebounded poorly. We finished poorly in the paint. Eventually we got to the line some after only 2 FT's at halftime and that had to be the difference. They took 10 extra shots, made twice as many 3's. We tried to let them back in it at the end. We couldn't do much right and it somehow worked out.

Reporter: Are you happy with Peavy as the FT taker at the end?

Tovarich: He was 3/5, so that wasn't great. He made the first two which put us up 7. Then they hit a 3. Shocking, I know. Felt like they made most of them. We missed the front end of the next FT and Atkinson grabbed the offensive rebound. That one was legitimately shocking, but he should've held on to it and let them foul us again, but his instincts were to go right back up for a layup, which got swatted away. Then they got hit a 3 again to get the lead down to 1. Peavy made 1/2 after we're up 2 with 7 seconds to go. Since we had 5 fouls to give, and they were so far away from the basket, it seemed wise to keep fouling them back there, so we were finally able to wittle the clock down to 1.2 so they had no time to make a pass and he had to heave it from 60 feet or so. I'll revisit the FT taker situation at the end. I might like Murry there better. I'll have to look at the numbers.

Reporter: It looked like you dropped 4 spots in the RPI after beating Grand Canyon. Is that concerning?

Tovarich: Yeah. I think we needed to be higher in the initial rankings because our opponents down the stretch are pretty rough. All those big schools have lots of opportunities for big wins, and we just don't. Even if we win out, which we might if we play better, we're likely going to continue in the wrong direction.

Reporter: Atkinson was struggling on offense, relatively speaking. Is he still plan A even when he's hovering around 50%?

Tovarich: Yeah, that's still our best plan. Taft was on today, so we have him 7 shots in 9 minutes. Life would be so much easier if we could rebound, but I think we're 1-22-1 at winning rebounds? So he's always plan A. Spears was decent from 3, so that was a plan too. In today's case, better defense would've made life easier too. We were lucky to be playing a sub .500 team at home.

Tovarich: I think that's our first basket at, almost the buzzer to win one. Great game, back and forth, with no ever leading by more than 5 I think. We happened to tie it with right about a minute to go, got a steal and held for the latest shot we could.

                        Reporter: Was Taft the plan?

Tovarich: No, we were not doing well in the paint in the second half. I can't even count all the misses but after being 1/7 on 3's in the first half, we were killing it from out there in the second. They were in man so we tried a long pass over to Murry but they closed on him quickly, so we sent it in to the post, and he made a nice spin move along the baseline and layed it in with 1.1 to go. That was still enough time for them to fire some 92 foot shot off the rim though :rolls eyes:

Reporter: You dropped another 6 spots in the RPI since beating Idaho. How do you fee about it?

Tovarich: Yeah, I expected a drop, but 10 spots in 2 games is bad. Too bad Oral Roberts is only 10-10 because on paper, they were the best team to come up here this season, even better than San Francisco. Our toughest opponent left is supposed to be Loyola and they only have 2 wins, so we don't have much to cling to in the RPI. Even the fake mid-major poll is dropping us with every win. It's all good info for future seasons.

Tovarich: That's the first bad loss we've had this season I think. All the other teams we lost to were good teams. This one, not so much. Everyone not named Atkinson had a bad game. He did his best to carry us to the end, but someone else had to step up and no one really did. And he can't keep up with a team who shot 65%

Reporter: Do you think it was the long road trip late in the season?

                            Tovarich: I doubt it.

Reporter: Almost everyone started slowly. Why do you think it was then?

Tovarich: I don't know. Even Atkinson had his first two shots stuffed in the first minute. Taft started 0/3. We didn't make a 3 in the first half. We were 3/6 at the line. We were inept at every position making shots except Atkinson. Borders couldn't finish in the paint against the press. We finally hit a few 3's there in the early to middle part of the second half and then missed about our last 6. Atkinson can't play all 28 minutes though. I wish he could. Someone else had to step up and we couldn't find anyone to do it and so we lost to one of our easier opponents this season.

Reporter: Can you still get the automatic NIT bid?

Tovarich: We'll see. We have to win. FDU just won about 6 in a row it looks like. They're pretty close on our tails in the winning percentage to get it. If they stay hot, we might not be able to get it.

Reporter: Most of your losses have come in streaks. Do you feel that may be coming?

Tovarich: On paper, Loyola's the best team left on our schedule and they're 3-14. So I'm conflicted if that'd be worse than this or not. They're supposed to be a lot better than their record.

Tovarich: Great comeback in the second half, right up there with San Francisco. Down 12 right off the bat about a minute into halftime. We slowly fought back and tied it with about a minute to go. We needed every one of those 8 FT's we hit in the last 34 seconds. They still had a chance to tie it despite that. We got a rare miss from them on the tying 3 with 2.5 to go and we tacked on 2 more at the line.

Reporter: Did they finally get worn down only playing 7 players?

Tovarich: Yeah, maybe. That's a first I've encountered playing that few people. They seemed like they couldn't miss for the longest time. They were destroying us on the boards. That believe it or not evened out a little in the end. It was 14-3 at the half, so we tied them 9-9 on rebounds after halftime. They called about 4 timeouts in the last 4 minutes though it felt like so maybe it was to give them a breather.

Reporter: Why didn't they let Basden shoot on every possession?

Tovarich: He'd have gone for 70 if they did. We couldn't stop him. Teams find things working and they inexplicably don't go to it enough.

Reporter: You're down another 11 spots in the RPI from the last two results. Is there enough data to know how much these poor opponents hurt you?

Tovarich: Probably. Loyola should be good though. 3-17 is baffling. I saw they played 4 top 25 teams in the OOC and they're somewhat lowly rated in the MVC. You can't always predict things. They're one of top 7 or so best teams we scheduled and the RPI has them at 301, so we basically get nothing but negatives for a hard fought road win there.
